YMCA marks 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Breakfast

On Monday, January 20, 2020, the YMCA of metro Milwaukee presented their 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Breakfast for the first time ever at the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino. There were more than 900 community leaders in attendance. As part of the celebration the three student 1st place winners from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest were also there. Those students are elementary school winner Jordan Anders, middle school winner Alani Walls, and high school winner Jada Young. Elementary school teacher recognized for her support of Dr. King Celebration in surprise ceremony On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts honored Aruna Halala-Vishudh, a teacher at Samuel Clemens Elementary School, with a surprise visit to her classroom to acknowledge her long-time support of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Ms. Halala-Vishudh was surprised during class with a plaque, flowers, and tickets to an upcoming show at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Ms. Halala-Vishudh has been an MPS educator for 19 years. Wisconsin Black Historical Museum hosts 19th Annual 'King Fest' On Monday, January 20, 2020, the Wisconsin Black Historical Museum hosted the 19th Annual "King Fest" which celebrated Dr. King's 91st birthday. This year's them was "Remembrance, Resistance, and Reparations," and was hosted by Sister Janette Herrera at the Wisconsin Black Historical Museum, 2620 W. Center Street. The celebration featured speakers like Congresswoman Gwen Moore, State Senator Lena Taylor, and State Representative Kalan Haywood, Jr.; drumming performances; praise dancers; spoken word artists, vendors and keynote speaker author and activist Ramel (Kweku Akyirefi) Smith, Ph.D. Also there was the presentation of the 19th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Writing Contest winners. Each of the four winners received $500 scholarships. They are Kamari Barr, Fannie Dillon, Damiah Springer and Treyvon Hamberlin. WWE legend Rocky Johnson, father of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, dies at age 75 Johnson was one-half of the first African American tag team to win the WWE tag team championship

Rocky Johnson, former WWE tag team champion and WWE Hall of Famer, has died at the age of 75, WWE confirmed on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Johnson, born Wayde Douglas Bowles, married into the famed Anoa'i family after he wed "High Chief" Peter Maivia's daughter Ata Maivia. He was the father of former multi-time WWE world champion and current Hollywood mega star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. "WWE is saddened to learn that Rocky 'Soul Man' Johnson (born Wayde Douglas Bowles), a WWE Hall of Famer, former World Tag Team Champion, and father of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, has passed away at age 75," the WWE statement read. The year 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade. African Americans are still in the crosshairs on all levels of existence. The lack of quality leadership has literally created a lost tribe of people. The US government has its own issues and doesn’t have the time for African American problems. This lost tribe of people now has to attempt to do something for themselves without Massa. The question is, “Do African Americans have the intelligence to do anything that can truly uplift the race?”

Americans, but brain washing them to be the butt of every joke. If education was going to uplift the African American why would white people put schools in every ghetto and make children go? Exactly. In 2020 it’s time for African Americans to cut everything loose. It’s time for African Americans to drop that American last name and understand that they are Black. African Americans have to stop allowing a society that does not like them to define who and what they are. It is time for African Americans to understand that there is no magic way that is going to make white people love them. African Americans have to understand that this society was set up with an anti-black mindset and if they adopt this society they will hate themselves. David Kincaid once said, “It’s time for African Americans to get up off their knees and take them wigs off their heads.” I couldn’t have said it better. Real talk about the REAL ID (Week 4) GET YOUR REAL ID DEADLINE: OCTOBER 1, 2020 On October 1, 2020 every person must obtain a Real ID if they are planning to fly within the United States, visit a military base or other federal building. Having a REAL ID, the Homeland Security Compliant ID will allow you access to the government offices and fly in the United States. In the conclusion of this series, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has provided the following REAL-ID Additional Requirements when renewing or applying for a driver’s license or identification card: One original document or certified copy (not a photocopy, fax or scan) from each category is required. Some documents may be used for more than one category,

whereas some will only satisfy the requirements of a single category. The document categories include: • Proof of name and date of birth; • Proof of citizenship or legal status in the U.S.; • Proof of identity; • Proof of name change (if applicable). If you present a valid U.S. passport in your current name, proof of name change history is not required; • Proof of Social Security number; • Proof of Wisconsin residency. Who, what and where is our City Attorney? Milwaukee costing taxpayers millions of dollars and diverting money away from valuable services needed by us. The City Attorney must be involved in developing policy directives, training of employees, and have firsthand knowledge of what’s going on in our city. Sitting on the sidelines is not going to accomplish what needs to be done to make Milwaukee a better place.

By Vince Bobot Candidate for City Attorney During my campaign the most asked question of me is: “Who is the City Attorney?”. I then tell the person the name and explain to them that the City Attorney is the legal representative for the Mayor, Common Council, department heads and employees of Milwaukee. The City Attorney is also the legal counsel for the Milwaukee Public School System and the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee. Most importantly the City Attorney represents and advocates for people in Milwaukee. The City Attorney is elected and should bring an independent perspective to the duties of that office which ensures the law is being followed by everyone in Milwaukee. After being informed of the who and what they ask me, “Where has our City Attorney been?”. Rather than immersing in negative conversations, I prefer telling people what’s going to be done and my vision for the City Attorney’s office. Over the past month I wrote several articles explaining things that could be done to make Milwaukee a better place. Those articles discussed ways for restoring meaningful traffic enforcement on our streets, working to stop human trafficking in our city, finding ways to eliminate vacant, boarded-up houses, and a holistic approach to dealing with youthful offenders in Municipal Court.

Representative Ayanna Pressley, Democrat of Massachusetts, revealed in a video released on Thursday, January 16, 2020, that she has a condition called alopecia and is now bald. “This is about acceptance,” Ms. Pressley said of her decision to publicly discuss her baldness. “I hope this starts a conversation about the personal struggles we navigate, and I hope that it creates awareness about how many people are impacted by alopecia.” Alopecia — a medical term for baldness — is an autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out from the scalp, face and other parts of the body. Scientists are not sure what causes the immune system to attack healthy hair follicles. Most people with alopecia are otherwise healthy, but the hair loss may occur very rapidly and may cause severe emotional distress. Over six million people in the United States have the condition. It may affect people of any age, sex, race or ethnic group, according to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Ms. Pressley’s announcement is an unusual public acknowledgment, as many people work hard to hide hair loss. In the video, published on The Root, Ms. Pressley described a personal journey, from feeling like herself in signature Senegalese twists to the moment last year that she realized she had alopecia. “In the fall, when I was getting my hair retwisted, is the first time that I was made aware that I had some patches,” Ms. Pressley said. “From there it accelerated very quickly.” Ms. Pressley said that she began to wake up to “sinkfuls of hair,” and that she tried wrapping her hair and wearing a bonnet, measures some black women take to protect their hair while asleep. But the efforts failed. “I did not want the morning to come where I will remove this bonnet and my wrap, and be met with more hair in the sink and an image in the mirror of a person who increasingly felt like a

stranger to me,” Ms. Pressley said. On the day last month when Ms. Pressley was to cast a vote to impeach President Trump, she realized she was completely bald. She wore a wig on the House floor because she felt she had to be present regardless of her hair loss, she said. “I felt naked, exposed, vulnerable,” Ms. Pressley said. She also felt that she was participating in cultural betrayal, she said, because of all the young girls who looked up to her as a congresswoman who wore braids. “I felt like I owed those little girls an explanation,” she said. Toward the end of the video, the representative removes her wig and reveals a smooth scalp. After the video was released, her colleagues rallied in support on Twitter. “Could you imagine losing all your hair on the eve of an enormously public day? And then turning that intensely intimate ordeal to make space for others? Ayanna, you are a living blessing,” Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, wrote on Twitter. “Proud to count her as a friend, glad so many in the next generation have her as a role model,” former Senator John Kerry wrote. “I am making peace with having alopecia,” Ms. Pressley said in the video. “I’m making progress every day.” Though alopecia occurs at all ages, it is often first diagnosed during childhood or adolescence. About half of children and teenagers with alopecia will see their hair regrow within a year, even without treatment. But it is a lifelong condition, said Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic: “Once you have it, you have it.” “It can go into remission, so people may have patches once and never again,” she added. “But it’s an autoimmune disorder. How to honor Martin Luther King Jr. in the age of Trump By Jonathan Capehart Opinion writer

their calls for freedom in the sanctuaries of black churches around the country, especially throughout the Jim Crow South.

On Sunday, I was invited to give the keynote address at a celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark. Judging by the reaction of the congregation, there is righteous anger and pain over what is happening in our country under President Trump. Below are the remarks I delivered. As you read them, if you imagine an “Amen!” was said, it most likely happened, for the gathered seemed eager to hear not just a celebration of King but also a call to reclaim the dream for a nation that has lost its way. "This weekend, the weekend we celebrate the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is the perfect weekend to take stock of where we are and who we are. As a nation and as a people. Both are in trouble. And it’s going to take, in the words of legendary Rep. John Lewis, “good trouble, necessary trouble,” to get us back on track. "The one nice thing I can say about President Trump is that he has opened our eyes to just how fragile our Constitution and our democracy are. "Trump is a daily civics lesson in the fragility of our founding document. See,

what we now understand is that the power of the Constitution doesn’t just lie in its words and the ideals and aspirations they represent. It also resides in the reverence of them by the 44 men who have sworn to protect it as president of the United States. President Trump, the 45th president of the United States, is not among them. "No matter the party — whether Republican President George W. Bush or his successor, Democratic President Barack Obama — once they walked into the Oval Office, their personal interests took a back seat to the interests and well-being of the nation. Preservation of the moral authority of the presidency came first. Upholding the rule of law and the fundamental tenets of democracy came first, if only to serve as a model for other nations or as a beacon of hope for those in nations where liberty and justice are

in short supply. "That’s not to say that ours is a perfect nation. It isn’t. Nor was it before Trump came into office. Ours is a nation that struggles, even in good times, to live up to its ideals. And the King holiday serves as an annual reminder of the power of people, regular people, to keep things on track, to do powerful things. "Actually, let me put a finer point on it: Regular, churchgoing people. "What sometimes gets lost in the celebration of Dr. King is the role of the black church that forged him and the countless unacclaimed foot soldiers in the battle for freedom, equality and civil rights. The rights that we enjoy today were won by people who were by no means wealthy. But they were rich in spirit and conviction and determination. And they honed

"Through the marches and sit-ins and boycotts they organized, Dr. King and other leaders of the civil rights movement held up a mirror to the nation to show Americans how the ideal of America didn’t live up to the reality facing their fellow Americans.

"All three of those heroes are dismayed by what is happening today. By the ease with which the country stopped progress. By the decimation of their hard work. Young people, you are surrounded by countless people who lived through those years, who saw the nation get better — not perfect — better. "These are people to whom you are related. And to whom you are not. But you are linked to them, we are all linked to them, through an incredible lineage. And that with lineage comes responsibility — for all of us.

"My apologies for what might seem like an overly partisan message. But some things rise above partisanship when you’re talking about the moral fiber and character of our country. Like I said, and as we all know, we are not a perfect country. "But we can’t afford to NOT tap into the bravery of our lineage and our heritage. To hold up the mirror, once again, to the nation. This time, to show Americans how the reality facing their fellow Americans does not live up to the ideals that were taking hold just three years ago, does not live up to the promise of an America that Dr. King and others worked so hard to create, no longer lives up to the hopes and dreams of people around the world who once looked to the United States as a beacon in a sea of uncertainty and want.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream lives in acts of justice big and small The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., had to have known as he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech 57 years ago that the moment would change a nation. After the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, King stood before a sea of 250,000 people gathered Aug. 28, 1963, below the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He rose to the occasion, departing from his prepared text to deliver a passionate message, words that would become the most pivotal and signature moment of the civil rights movement. Today, America is better and more diverse than King could have envisioned back in 1963, when just weeks after his speech, four little girls would die in the Sunday morning bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL,

a racially hostile and divided city known in the civil rights movement as “Bombingham.” For dreams to endure, however, they must transcend moments of doubt and touch future generations whose accomplishments confirm the righteousness of the struggle. Had he lived to see 2016, King would

have celebrated the symbolic breakthrough of a two-term president who shared his skin color, but he also would have shed bitter tears of anger and sadness over new legal scuffles over voting rights, crime in poor minority neighborhoods, seemingly intractable poverty, and the racial divisions among Americans over the death of Trayvon Martin.

King also would have seen an America no longer defined almost exclusively in black and white but a nation of many hues, and one in which civil rights debates about opportunity and economic inclusiveness are filtered through a more complex lens. King was right that day in 1963, when beneath the towering presence of the Great Emancipator, he said, “Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.” Because many did exactly as he preached, their children and grandchildren are growing up in a nation that is closer to realizing King’s dream

than the America he knew. It is a trek that continues to this day. President Barack Obama’s speech at the Lincoln Memorial to mark the 50th anniversary of King’s speech focused on civil rights and race relations. Dallas City Council member Dwaine Caraway called for a conversation about race. And a racial-justice think tank held its national conference on race in North Texas. Just as important are the simple daily ways that many Americans embody the spirit of the “dream speech” as they quietly mentor, inspire, and seek to cash the check of opportunity. Fifty-seven years later, the dream faces hurdles, just as it did on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that historic day. In the spirit of King, it will overcome and endure.

Three important lessons we can learn from Dr. King’s legacy Exactly 91 years ago to the day, a child was born in Atlanta, Georgia named Michael King, Jr. who would change the world. His father would eventually change his name in honor of the German leader of the Protestant Reformation, and it was by that name – Martin Luther King, Jr. – that the world would remember him nearly a century later. Few names in modern American history ring more powerfully than Martin Luther King’s. He remains the only person born in the 20th Century for whom we celebrate a federal holiday. His name is synonymous with great speeches, with inspiring hope, and with the brutal assassination which took his life before he even reached the age of 40. His name is still invoked constantly in modern political discussions, and he arguably left a more profound, longer-lasting legacy than nearly any other American over the last century. When you think of great historical leaders, Martin Luther King’s name constantly makes the short list.

So what can we learn from Dr. King’s legacy? What knowledge can we apply to our own lives today to make the world a better place? It would be impossible to list all of them, but here are a few of the most important lessons from Dr. King’s life and legacy, as represented by some of the most powerful passages from his speeches: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness – only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate – only love can do that.” One of Dr. King’s most well-remembered quotes is also the one perhaps most relevant to our own lives. Our political system and even our popular culture are all heavily centered around the concept of conflict and hate. There is a whole industry in entertainment and politics built around the idea of outrage – we’re supposed to get mad at the people on the other side of the partisan fence, or we’re supposed to hate the celebrities who annoy us or do outrageous things. Hate may be an animating force – that is, it may get us out of our seats to do something,

but that “something” is hardly productive or positive. Our world won’t get better until we stop revolving our collective existence around hate, and our collective existence won’t get better until we personally make the choice to stop the cycle of hate and try to find common ground with all people. “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now… I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land.” MLK said those prophetic

words the day before he died in a speech titled, “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop.” Reading those words 57 years later, after all of the ups and downs we’ve experienced as a society, you still can feel their power to lift us up and make us hope for something better. There’s also a lesson there for all of us: leadership is sometimes as simple as inspiring a shared vision. We want to be reminded that the world can be better, and sometimes it’s up to us as leaders to do the reminding. We may not have the platform of Dr. King, but all of us have the potential to lift others up. “I have a dream that my

four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” King’s most famous line was spoken more than 50 years ago, but it still describes a future we have not yet attained. We still have much to learn in how we treat those different from us, whether the lines that separate us are gender, race, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, or any other countless divisions which still exist, and which motivate people to act with fear or hate. We will always be a nation of many different types of people, and those differences should be celebrated and embraced – but we can also work toward a future in which those differences no longer cause us to push away our fellow humans. Dr. King was a revolutionary leader in many respects, and this month we will take just 24 hours to celebrate his legacy. What we do after the celebration will determine our own legacy.

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration will rekindle in the hearts of all our people a new pride in America, a determination to make it an even greater nation. It will also spark a new appreciation for its son, who was born into a world where bigotry and racism still hold sway. But before he died, he contributed immeasurably to the human rights of all people. In my travels to the 50 states and U.S. territories as chairperson of the King Federal Holiday Commission, I find that Americans from all walks of life and every political persuasion share a common enthusiasm and excitement as we prepare to celebrate what has been called by President Reagan “A Celebration of Freedom and Justice to Unite All Our Citizens.” There is a spirit of unity and good will sweeping this land. People of all races,religions, classes, politics and stations in life are coming together and putting aside differences in a spirit of reconciliation to make Monday, January 20, 1985 “Martin’s Day,” a day of great national unity and renewed patriotism consistent with the non-violent tradition of the man we prepare to honor.
