Black Inventors Gallery honors Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin with Living Legend Award Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin received the Crystal Living Legend award from founders of the Black Inventors Gallery at a meet-and-greet with business leaders held Wednesday, December 21, 2016. "We have a really simple mantra. It's about doing things for the right reasons. It's a simple filter to go through things, if we have to question it, we're pretty sure it's wrong," shared Feigin. Retired Miller Brewing Executive and past Crystal Living Legend Award Winner Virgis Colbert returned to Milwaukee for the event. "Peter has completely re-imagined the Milwaukee Bucks business operation and grown in sales, ticket revenue, retail and global recognition which is very important," Colbert explained. Feigin's twin brother, Daniel, emphasized his brother's

role in reshaping downtown Milwaukee."I got to tell you the enthusiasm Peter has brought to the city has been brought right back. It's amazing to see what has been accomplished in a short amount of time," shared Dan Feigin. As the backdrop of the luncheon were items invented by African Americans. Founders of the Black Inventors Gallery, Peggy Hardy and Synovia Moss, spearheaded the display - a reminder of the spirit of innovation and vision Peter Feigin needed to champion a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks. Feigin told the crowd, "The city has really embraced the organization and this team in a way that is just heartwarming and proud and we're not even there yet, which is really exciting and great; so thank you very very much!"

American Cancer Society and Kohl’s: Helping kids make healthy choices Over the past three decades, the obesity rate among children ages 12-19 has more than tripled – increasing from 5 percent in 1980 to a staggering 18 percent in 2010. And, a recent report from the American Cancer Society found that Milwaukee high schoolers have a much higher obesity rate than the national average. This puts our youth at risk for many types of cancer and other chronic diseases later in life. These statistics also make it clear that the lack of regular exercise and the prevalence of “food deserts” have a direct impact on the health of our kids. Dakota Berg is an enthusiastic and energetic health education teacher at Milwaukee High School of the Arts. Thanks to funding from the American Cancer Society and Kohl’s, Dakota is incorporating wellness activities into his classroom. This semester he’s teaching students about cancer and steps they can take to prevent the disease. Dakota’s passion for health education stems from his personal experience. “My inspiration for this project came from my father. When I was 10 years old he passed away from lung cancer. He had been a smoker for his entire life.” Dakota’s goal is to help kids form healthy habits that they can maintain throughout their life and to share that knowledge with their families. One way he did this was by showcasing their learnings at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts Health Fair. The fair was held on Saturday, January 16, 2017 at the Milwaukee High School of the Arts.

Oscars push past #OscarsSoWhite to nominate six black actors and three black films Oscar voters showered the neo-musical “La La Land” with 14 nominations on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, a tie with “Titanic” and “All About Eve” for the most in Academy Award history. But the academy also moved past two #OscarsSoWhite years by honoring six black actors — a record — and including diverse films like “Moonlight,” “Fences” and “Hidden Figures” in the best picture race. “It makes me feel good to see such a multifaceted group of people get recognized,” said Barry Jenkins, the director of “Moonlight,” which received eight nominations. Speaking by phone from Amsterdam, where he was promoting the film, he added, “It’s an affirmation that film has the power to erode barriers and reveal what makes us all human.” Nine movies, most of them cobbled together outside the studio system, will compete for Hollywood’s top prize. Filling out the best picture race are “Arrival,” a science-fiction thriller; the cops-and-robbers drama “Hell or High Water”; “Manchester by the Sea,” about a mournful New England handyman; the subtitled tear-jerker “Lion”; and “Hacksaw Ridge,” Mel Gibson’s true story of World War II heroism. In a surprise, Gibson also drew a nomination as best

Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in “Fences.” Washington was nominated for best actor and Davis for best supporting actress. director, officially ending his 10-year status as a Hollywood pariah for his offscreen behavior. Joining him in the directing field were Damien Chazelle (“La La Land”), Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”), Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”) and Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”). In the best actress category academy voters backed Isabelle Huppert from the French film “Elle,” Emma Stone from “La La Land,” Natalie Portman from “Jackie,” Meryl Streep from “Florence Foster Jenkins” and the newcomer Ruth Negga from “Loving.” It was Streep’s 20th career nomination; her speech about Donald J. Trump at the Golden Globes probably won her some votes.

In a sharp contrast to the previous two years, when the academy put forward allwhite rosters of acting nominees, voters chose the largest number of black candidates ever. Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris each received a nod for their supporting work in “Moonlight,” a poetic drama about a young black man in Miami. Viola Davis (“Fences”) and Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures”) were also nominated for supporting actress. Joining Negga in the lead categories was Denzel Washington of “Fences,” an adaptation of August Wilson’s classic play about black life in 1950s Pittsburgh. Another minority actor, Dev Patel, was nominated for his supporting role in

“Lion,” which received six nominations in total, tying “Manchester by the Sea” and “Hacksaw Ridge.” And four of the five honored documentaries came from black filmmakers, including “13th,” Ava DuVernay’s searing look at race and mass incarceration in America, and “I Am Not Your Negro,” directed by Raoul Peck, a portrait of the writer James Baldwin and the civil-rights era. (The others in that race are “Fire at Sea,” “Life, Animated” and the seven-hour “O. J.: Made in America,” which paves the way for TV documentaries given limited theatrical release to be nominees.) Pundits will inevitably declare that the academy listened to the #OscarsSoWhite protests that found the Rev. Al Sharpton berating Hollywood in a pre-ceremony rally last year. The academy made drastic membership changes in 2016, revoking the voting privileges of long-nonworking members and inviting more women and minorities to join. (The 7,000-member group remains overwhelmingly white and male, however.) Public pressure may have been a factor in the outcome on Tuesday, but the results almost assuredly have more to do with the vagaries of moviemaking: a full slate of high-quality movies with diverse casts that coalesced in the past year.

Still, race continues to be a hot-button topic around the Oscars. Last week, one academy voter, Santiago Pozo, voiced brewing discontent among Latinos, writing in the trade publication Deadline.com that underrepresentation of other minorities in Hollywood — not just black actors — is “a terminal illness for our business and for the relevance of the Academy Awards.” The Los Angeles Times weighed in with a similar editorial on Tuesday, noting that there were almost no Hispanic nominees. One exception: Lin-Manuel Miranda received a nod for his original “Moana” song “How Far I’ll Go,” putting him one step closer to the rarefied club known as EGOT: those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. (Miranda, a firsttime Oscar nominee, already has an Emmy, two Grammys and three Tonys.) The academy entrusted its previous ceremony to the producers Reginald Hudlin and David Hill, who brought in Chris Rock to scold Hollywood on diversity and created a cable-news-style scrawl in an ill-advised attempt to make acceptance speeches more interesting. Ratings dropped, and ABC, which charges more than $2 million for a 30-second commercial, moved to take a firmer hand in this year’s telecast.

Alternative facts

If you think things will change since the election and inauguration of the 45th President of the United States, don’t hold your breath. Things are really going to get very interesting in some aspect or another real soon. For some these changes are just what the doctor ordered; but for the majority of us the socioeconomic nightmare persists, dreams shattered, limited opportunities, and prejudice and discrimination continue to be on center stage. If you are feeling this way, I just want to remind you that this is only the first week of a new administration. It is one thing to share your side of things, what you value, political views, background and faith; but it is another thing when you cite things that are clearly

a number of things that were “never done” or “known before” became the new normal. This election cycle has also shined a “new light” on how far we have come in terms of our civil discourse and yet how far we have to go. For many of us, this has opened our eyes to see that there is a lot more work that needs to be done to close the gaps. Without a doubt, our way of viewing patriotism, nationalism and respect for dignity and order is now on the table for debate. It’s just not politics anymore. not supported by the facts on the ground or by photos taken in history. It is truly remarkable that people will put their reputations on the line to support a position that is clearly not the truth. And even when being confront-

Protesting and still confused Donald Trump is officially the President of the USA. You can rant and rave, but this is a fact. Many people around the country are losing their mind over Trump taking over the White House. There have been several marches and protests over the past few weeks. The marches and protests have achieved nothing. Trump has been sworn in and is President. The one thing the demonstrations have achieved is confusion. Trump’s election has generated confusion and more than a little fear. Many people who never paid attention to politics are now political analysts. School children who should be studying their lessons are worried about Trump. What good is this worry and fear producing? Many will say people are becoming more politically conscious. Maybe this is true but does it help society?

this whole scenario has been for the last two years? The people of the USA should use David Clarke as an example. Clarke has used the political landscape to propel himself into the limelight. Clarke has bought into the Trump wave and is riding high. Clarke understood where the tide was going and went with it. This move transformed Clarke from a jester into a savvy house toady. You can say what you want but Clarke is on the winning team.

Was Trump being sworn in Washington, DC affected by anti-Trump advocates in Milwaukee? Did a protest held in Red Arrow Park keep John Roberts from swearing Trump in? Did the complaining many citizens have done since November change anything? I think

you know the answer. What all the hoopla did was create an atmosphere of confusion for the entire country.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Ignorance is not bliss: The importance of sound biblical doctrine to God’s people (Part 4) “You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.” (Titus 2:1)

What is the best way to study doctrine? This writer is fortunate to extract the following suggestions from Wayne Grudem. He is the author of “Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine” which is a brilliant and wise treatment of this branch of theology. These suggestions will be helpful in discovering how studying doctrine correctly will aid in the shaping of our Christian growth and character. Prayer. We must pray as we seek God’s help in the understanding of His Word. Paul tells us: “the person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit” (1 Cor. 2:14). Studying doctrine is a spiritual activity in which we need to realize that the proper thing to do, especially when we are unable to understand certain Scripture or

while it may be tempting to develop an attitude of pride, one must maintain a humble spirit. Assistance from others. The study of doctrine will require one to seek help from others who have studied and/or written publications on the subject. We should be thankful that God has put teachers in the church. (1 Cor. 12:28.) We should allow these teachers to use their gifts to help us understand Scripture.

doctrine, is to pray for God’s help. Humility. Peter said, “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5.) The word Peter uses for to “clothe” oneself is very unusual; it derives from a word which describes anything tied on with a knot. It was commonly used for protective clothing and for a slave’s apron. There was a time

when Jesus had put upon himself just such an apron. At the Last Supper, John says Jesus took a towel and girded Himself and took water and began to wash the disciples’ feet (John 13:4,5). Jesus girded himself with the apron of humility, and so must Jesus’ followers. The study of Scripture or doctrine will supply the Christian with information that is perhaps not known or not known well or understood well by other Christians in their churches or their relatives who are older in the Lord than they are. In all these situations,

Praise. It is in the study of the living God, the wonders of God’s marvelous works and God’s awesome acts in creation and redemption that brings about our praise. As we study and learn all that God is, all that God says and all that God does, and continues to do, our response to the study of biblical truths should always be that of praise. (Grudem Systematic Theology, pp. 26-27). In Rom. 11:33-36, Paul offers a good example of this. After a long theological argument, Paul breaks forth into joyful praise at the richness of the

doctrine which God has enabled him to express: Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. Annual march to King statue honors the legacy of the civil rights icon

Staff Photo

Steady rain and near-freezing temperatures did not prevent several dozen Milwaukee residents from participating in the annual march to the bronze statue of Dr. King. The statue is located at the top of the hill where Old World Third Street becomes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; the march commemorated the official holiday of the civil rights leader’s birthday on January 16. Milwaukee and Atlanta are the only two cities which have celebrated Dr. King’s birthday annually since 1984. The statue depicts Dr. King standing on top of a shelf of books. It was commissioned by the YWCA of Greater Milwaukee and unveiled on the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday in 1998.

“Vocalize our resistance:” Inauguration protest held in downtown Milwaukee Hundreds gathered in Milwaukee's Red Arrow Park to voice their outrage after Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States on Friday, January 20, 2017. As marchers made their way through downtown, they shouted their disenchantment with the new president. "We want to vocalize our resistance against the Trump agenda. We are fully within our constitutional rights to do that," said Maricela Aguilar Monroy, of Milwaukee Coalition Against Trump. "The number of people out here shows how important people find this moment right now." Hundreds gathered to protest with signs, buckets and chants. Those with the group, Milwaukee Coalition Against Trump, led the demonstration several miles through the downtown area.

Perhaps you sent a lovely card, or sat quietly in a chair; Perhaps you sent a floral piece, if so, we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, as any friend could say; Perhaps you were not there at all, just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts, We thank you so much, Whatever the part.

The M3 concept was born in winter 2015, when education executives from MPS, MATC and UWM joined a commission to support Milwaukee Public Schools Lynde & Harry Bradley Technology & Trade School. Study: Cervical cancer death risk is highest among older, black women The number of women who die from cervical cancer in the United States may be higher than previously believed, and the risk is greatest among older and black women, a new study finds. “This is a preventable disease and women should not be getting it, let alone dying from it,” study leader Anne Rositch, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, said in a Hopkins news release. Due to big advances in early detection, such as the Pap test, it’s long been thought that cervical cancer had made a big retreat in the United States. But the researchers note that prior estimates of cervical cancer death had included women who’d already had a hysterectomy — which can include removal of the uterus and cervix. One in five women in the United States has had a hysterectomy, according to the researchers. Preventive screening such as the Pap test looks for signs of malignancy or pre-malignancy in the cervix, so it is

only useful in reducing deaths from cervical cancer in women who have not undergone a hysterectomy, the researchers explained. Their new calculation approach excludes women who’d had a hysterectomy. When those women were factored out, Rositch’s team found that U.S. cervical cancer deaths are 77 percent higher among black women and 47 percent higher among white women than previously thought. The prior rate of cervical cancer death among black women older than 20 was 5.7 per 100,000 each year, while it was 3.2 per 100,000 each year among white women. But when women who’d had a hysterectomy were excluded from the analysis, the rate in black women rose to more than 10 per 100,000 per year and to 4.7 per 100,000 per year in white women. “These data tell us that as long as a woman retains her cervix, it is important that she continue to obtain rec-

ommended screening for cervical cancer since the risk of death from the disease remains significant well into older age,” Rositch said. The research also found that many women who die from cervical cancer are older than 65, the recommended cut-off age for regular cervical cancer screening. Each year in the United States, there are 12,000 cases of cervical cancer and 4,000 deaths from the disease. But routine screening can prevent cervical cancer. The study findings emphasize the need to learn more

about the risks associated with cervical cancer in older and black women, and to determine the best screening and treatment options for these women, according to the researchers. “Since the goal of a screening program is to ultimately reduce mortality from cervical cancer, then you must have accurate estimates within the population targeted by those programs — adult women with a cervix,” Rositch explained. “These findings motivate us to better understand why, despite the wide availability of screening and treatment, older and black women are still dying from cervical cancer at such high rates in the United States,” she added. Two gynecologists who reviewed the findings agreed that better screening — for all women — is key to reducing the death toll from cervical cancer. “The disparity in cervical cancer rates between whites and blacks illustrates the

difference in medical care received by different populations in the United States,” said Dr. Jennifer Wu, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “This is an ongoing problem with many socioeconomic factors,” she said. “Better community outreach for preventative care and also special attention for high risk populations may help to decrease rates of cervical cancer.” Dr. Mitchell Maiman is chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Staten Island University Hospital, also in New York City. He said that “every effort must be made to insure that modern concepts in cervical cancer screening are executed. We must monitor our HPV vaccine programs with the goal of universal participation, and make sure that there are no racial disparities in its implementation.” The study appears in the Jan. 23 issue of the journal Cancer.

Diet or exercise: Which is more effective for managing diabetes? You hear about the importance of diet and nutrition all the time when you have diabetes. It’s true that what you eat and how you eat is essential to controlling diabetes. But regular physical activity is just as beneficial as diet. In fact, regular exercise is one of the most effective tools in diabetes management. What is the difference between physical activity and exercise? Physical activity includes all movement that increases energy use. It doesn’t need to have a structured or formal plan: you can make it part of your everyday routine— walking to the bus stop, dancing at a party on the weekend, cutting the grass or chasing your grandchildren. On the other hand, exercise is planned, structured physical activity. There are three categories of exercise: aerobic exercise,

Aerobic exercise is an exercise that increases your heart rate and your rate of breathing. When you exercise aerobically, your body uses oxygen as it breaks down fat and glucose for energy. This type of exercise requires you to move the large muscles, which boost the heart rate.

Aerobic exercise includes aerobic videotapes, riding a stationary bike, running or walking on a treadmill, taking an aerobics or water aerobics class or using a stair climber. Strength training, sometimes known as resistance training, helps you build strong bones and muscles. It includes exercises with free weights, weight machines, body weight, or elastic resis-
