On Thursday, January 13, 2022, the Milwaukee Press Club (MPC) and WisPolitics.com jointly hosted Police Chief Jeffrey Norman as featured speaker at their Newsmaker Luncheon at the Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells Street. Norman was named acting police chief in December 2020 and named Chief of Police in November 2021, wrapping up a year of turmoil over the city's top law enforcement position. Chief Norman talked about his new role and vision for the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD), including his community outreach and goals to address reckless driving and violent crime in the city. With more than 190 homicides in 2021, Milwaukee has broken the murder rate for the second year in a row. Chief Norman took questions from a panel of journalists and from the audience at the luncheon. The panel consisted of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Elliot Hughes, Fox 6 WITI's Aaron Maybin, and WISN-TV's Hilary Mintz. The MPC hosts the Newsmaker Lunch hour series every month.

New non-profit Eloron seeks to raise awareness for Sickle Cell disease Sickle cell anemia has exacted a heavy toll on the siblings of Bennie J. Morris, Sr. He lost his oldest sister, Lola in 1993 when she was just 39-years-old. On Halloween in 2019, his youngest brother, Aaron died of sickle cell. His youngest sister, Elizabeth, also suffers from sickle cell anemia. She celebrated her 59th birthday on December 15. “After Lola died in 1993, I promised myself I would do something to increase knowledge and awareness of sickle cell,” Morris said, “but then for a long time I didn’t do anything about it. All that time, I was thinking, you almost never see advertisements or public service announcements about sickle cell. After Aaron died, I came up with the name. I hope E’Loron will make a difference.” E’Loron is a portmanteau, a blend of words in which parts of multiple words are combined into a new word. In this case E’Loron is a blend of Elizabeth, Lola and Aaron. The organization held its first meeting on January 24. The group hopes to hold fundraising events and use the proceeds to raise awareness about sickle cell anemia through television,

radio, newspaper and billboards. Morris, a long-time member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and a community activist, is the president and founder. Sickle cell anemia is one of a group of disorders known as sickle cell disease, according to the Mayo Clinic. “Sickle cell anemia is an inherited red blood cell disorder in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout your body. Normally, the flexible, round red blood cells move easily through blood vessels. In sickle cell anemia, the red blood cells are shaped like sickles or crescent moons. These rigid, sticky cells can get stuck in small blood vessels, which can slow or block blood flow and oxygen to parts of the body.” There is no cure, but with careful medical supervision, patients can manage their pain, avoid complications and some live many years after being diag-

nosed with the chronic disease. Sickle cell anemia is not contagious. Most cases are diagnosed when the victim is still an infant. The disease is caused by a mutation in the gene the body uses to make hemoglobin, the iron-rich compound that makes blood red and enables red blood cells to carry oxygen from your lungs throughout your body. In sickle cell anemia, the abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid, sticky and misshapen. Sponsors of the new organization include: The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper Printing & Publishing Company, the Beulah Family Homestead, State Farm Insurance: agent Leonard Cratic, Jr., The Wisconsin Black Chamber of Commerce: chairman Ruben Hopkins, Christian Fellowship Community Church: Pastor Carl Heard. For more information on E'Loron #99 Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Resource Center, Inc. call (833) 3EL-ORON (883-335-6766) or (414) 9990060, or write to them at P.O. Box #11346, Shorewood,WI 53211 or Eloron1999@gmail. com.

A New Year: Focusing on Maintaining Our Temple: Men (week 3) “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Paul’s admonition to honor God with our bodies includes every believer, men, women, young people and children. This week, we will focus on the men.

a minute and reflect on that. Jesus bought us with a huge price – His own death on the Cross of Calvary! Thus, looking at 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 in a fresh new way, helps us commit ourselves to glorifying God in everything in our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. This New Year, let’s spend time ensuring our bodies are in good physical health.

Today’s society puts a lot of emphasis on one’s body image and some develop an unrealistic view of how their body may be seen by others. Thus, they become preoccupied about having that perfect body. Even some social media sites have helped to develop this obsession with This week, www.health. the body.1 gov offers these guidelines for men to encourage them God reminds us our body to pay more attention to their is a temple of the Holy Spir- health. First and most important, see a doctor for regular checkups even if you feel healthy. The website www. health.gov indicates this is important because some diseases and health conditions don’t have symptoms at first. Also, when you see a doctor you are given a chance to learn more about your health. Here are some things men can do to take care of

Is it coronavirus, the flu, a cold or allergies? Here’s how to tell If the coronavirus wasn’t enough, it’s also cold and flu season. AND…if that wasn’t enough, we are also going into allergy season (it’s a lot, I know). But don’t worry, while some of the symptoms of all four are similar, each one has distinct qualities to figure out which infection you may have. Details for each are listed below: Coronavirus Coronavirus, or COVID-19, is a the latest strain of coronavirus (yes, it’s been around before despite what others may have you believe). It’s spreading worldwide and sort of like that guy or girl that you never want to talk to. Treat it like you see them from far away and you hide just so they won’t talk to you, lol. Other strains of coronavirus have been very common and can cause only mild symptoms (like the common cold). However, some strains, like COVID-19 and its many variants, can cause severe illness. Symptoms of COVID-19 can include: – Shortness of breath – Fever (above 100 degrees) – Dry cough – Gradual onset (two to 14 days after onset) – Sometimes headache – Sometimes aches and pains – Mild sneezing – Sometimes fatigue, but it’s not predominate like the flu – Diarrhea is rare The severity of COVID-19 symptoms ranges from mild

congestion and sneezing. A major difference between allergies and coronavirus is the presence of fever, a main symptom of coronavirus but not a feature in seasonal allergies.

to severe. If you think you might have COVID-19, check out our section about how to get tested. If you want to go into a hospital, remember to call ahead and let them know your symptoms before you go in. They may have you go in at certain times or by yourself in an effort to protect hospital staff and other patients.

Cold While you may feel “blah” and just not like doing, when you have a cold, the symptoms are generally mild compared to more aggressive viruses like the flu. A cold can cause any or all of these symptoms: – Runny or stuffy nose – Cough (mild) – Fatigue (sometimes) – Sneezing – Watery eyes – Sore throat – Headaches (rarely) – Aches and pains Most over the counter

medications can knock out many cold symptoms within a few hours. A typical cold will last on average 7 to 10 days but can be managed with over-the-counter meds. The majority of the symptoms are actually not caused by the infection itself, but rather our body’s immune system trying get rid of it (i.e., shivering). Most cold viruses will go away if we’re patient and give our bodies time to fight them. Your immune system is the greatest defense against the common cold. Flu Seasonal influenza (better known as the flu) is like that ex that just won’t go away: just when you’re feeling good, he pops up and just leaves you feeling yucky (you like that analogy)? It usually

affects your nose, throat, and lungs and can last from 5 to 7 days. Here are some common symptoms of the flu: – Fever and/or chills – Cough (usually dry) – Fatigue – Aches and pains – Runny or stuffy nose (sometimes) – Sore throat (sometimes) – Diarrhea (sometimes in children) Unlike for colds or coronavirus, vaccination is a good way to prevent the flu. If you received a flu shot and still get the flu, your symptoms are generally milder than if you didn’t receive the flu shot. Most people with the flu get well without medical treatment. Stay home and get plenty of rest and fluids and treat a fever with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).

Allergies Symptoms of seasonal allergies range from mild to severe and occur seasonally. The most common include: – Sneezing – Runny or stuffy nose – Watery and itchy eyes – Itchy sinuses, throat, or ear canals – Ear congestion – Postnasal drainage Less common symptoms include: – Headache – Shortness of breath – Wheezing – Coughing Since allergies can sometimes make people feel as though they’re getting sick, allergies mainly cause itchy and watery eyes, runny nose,

Seven winter safety tips for seniors and their caregivers During the winter months, ice, snow and cold temperatures can make life challenging for anyone. Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses, especially for older people. While finding senior care to assist older adults on a regular basis can help keep them safe during any season, the following senior safety tips for winter can be helpful for preventing common cold weather dangers to older adults. 1. Avoid slipping on ice Icy, snowy roads and sidewalks make it easy to slip and fall. “Unfortunately, falls are a common occurrence for senior citizens, especially during the winter months,” said Dr. Stanley Wang, a physician at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. Often these falls cause major injuries such as hip and wrist fractures, head trauma and major lacerations. While younger people often recover relatively quickly from such injuries, older adults face complications, which Wang said are a leading cause of death from injury in men and women over the age of 65. For that reason, he recommends older adults wear shoes with good traction and non-skid soles, and stay inside until the roads are

clear. Replacing a worn cane tip can make walking easier, and older people are advised to take their shoes off as soon as they return indoors, because often snow and ice attach to the soles and, once melted, can lead to slippery conditions inside. 2. Dress for warmth Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia, a condition in which the body temperature dips too low. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, death rates attributed to excessive cold or hypothermia between 2015– 2017 increased steadily with age among those aged ≥15 years in both metropolitan and rural areas. That’s why older adults are advised to wear warm socks, a heavy coat, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf if heading outdoors. In very cold temperatures, they should cover all exposed skin and use a scarf to cover their mouth. If you confirm via thermometer that your older loved one’s temperature has dipped below 95 degrees, seek medical assistance immediately. 3. Fight wintertime depression Because it can be difficult and dangerous to get around, many older adults have less contact with others during cold months. This can breed

feelings of loneliness and isolation. To help avoid these issues, family members can check in on seniors as often as possible or send their loved one to adult day care; a short, daily phone call can also make a big difference. Seniors can also arrange a check-in system with neighbors and friends, where each person looks in on one or two others daily. 4. Keep the car tuned up Driving during the winter can be hazardous for anyone. But it is especially dangerous for older people, who may not drive as often anymore or whose reflexes may not be as quick as they once were. Get their car serviced before wintertime hits. Checking the oil, tires, battery and wipers can make a big difference on winter roads. Also make sure your older loved one’s roadside assistance plan is up-todate in case of emergencies.

If driving is necessary during the winter, review safe and reliable senior transportation options. 5. Prepare for power outages Winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure your older loved one has easy access to flashlights and a battery-powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets. Longer power outages can spoil the food in your refrigerator and freezer so keep a supply of non-perishable foods that can be eaten cold on hand. If the power goes out, older adults should wear several layers of clothing, including a hat. Check out this winter weather checklist from the CDC to make sure your loved one has everything they may need.

eat a smaller variety of foods, nutritional deficits, especially vitamin D deficiency (which has been associated with health concerns like cognitive decline, depression and osteoporosis, among others) can be a problem. Nicole Morrissey, a registered dietician in southwest Michigan, recommends that older people consume foods that are fortified with Vitamin D, such as milk, grains and seafood options like tuna and salmon.

7. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning Using a fireplace, gas heater or lanterns can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your loved one’s safety by checking the batteries on their carbon monoxide detector and buying an updated one if you need to. The most important tip to keep in mind during the colder months is to encourage older people to ask for help. Whether they need to clear their property of snow and ice, or stock up on nourishing groceries, they should feel free to ask a family member or neighbor or hire a professional. Wintertime certainly poses challenges for older adults, but with a bit of planning and awareness, they will stay healthy and experience 6. Eat a varied diet the joys of springtime soon Because people spend enough. more time indoors and may
