MKE Business Now Entrepreneurship Summit featured workshops, vendors, special keynote, and more

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, the Historic King Drive Business Improvement District #8 held the "11th Annual MKE Business Now Entrepreneurship Summit" at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., School, 3275 N. 3rd St. The MKE Business Now Entrepreneurship Summit is held to support the growth of local entrepreneurship and to help innovators stimulate economic development, neighborhood reinvestment, and job creation.

As part of the event, Milwaukee’s own Chef Joya (Adjoa Courtney), an award-winning private celebrity chef, the author of four cookbooks, and cultural influencer known for “veganizing” traditional recipes, delivered the keynote address about how to make creativity and passion your business. The summit consisted of four workshops and concluded with a

panel discussion featuring a variety of local business owners who shared their stories and experiences with the audience. This year’s panel included: Gregory Davis, co-founder of One 5 Olive; Adija Greer-Smith, owner of Confectionately Yours; Jonathan Adams and Myron Smith, co-owners of Yum Yum Fish and Chicken; and Djdade Denson, owner/operator of Coffee Makes You Black. The panel was moderated by Reggie “Smooth Az Butta” Brown of V100.7. The event was sponsored by the Historic King Drive Business Improvement District #8, the City of Milwaukee, the African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, US Bank and Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs (right photo, left).

500 Black Tuxedos event showcases Milwaukee youth

On Saturday, January 12, 2023, 250 adult males and 250 young men of color, all clad in tuxedos, gathered at the Italian Community Center (ICC), 631 E. Chicago St., to take part in the "5th Annual 500 Black Tuxedos Event." For the past 5 years community leader Andre Lee Ellis, along with We Got This Milwaukee and The CAGE (Community Agricultural Grow Experiences) Milwaukee, joined together to help the men get 'dressed to the nines' and enjoy a meal together to promote community, mentorship, and positive self-esteem.

“Oftentimes when black men are in the news, they’re in orange jumpsuits. But this time they’re in tuxedos,” explained Ellis. “That’s why it was important to take a picture on the steps of the Milwaukee County Courthouse, because they were not in orange jumpsuits, they were in something better.”

The evening featured fine dining and powerful performances by Kwabena Antoine Nixon, Muhibb Dyer, Gat Turner, King Kamonzi and Ajamou Butler aimed at inspiring the men in the room to lean on each other to better the Milwaukee community.

“I hope that they learn that they are better than what somebody else calls them,” shared Ellis. “It’s not who you say I am, it’s who I show you I am. And I am great. I am here.”

Ellis said little moments of hope and kindness are enough to change a person’s life for the better.

“If you stop a young man and say hello, that might be the change that he needs in his life. But you let him just keep walking by and you never say anything to them, you never give them a hug, then where does change come from?”

The constant cheers and roaring applause heard around the ICC ballroom were proof to spectators that something as small as putting on a suit is enough to bring a community together.

Historic King Drive BID #8 hosts annual meeting

The business of BID#8 is helping local businesses thrive, a theme emphasized frequently during the organization’s Annual Meeting celebrating 30 years in existence held on January 20, 2023, at Food for Health Milwaukee, a new community organization and BID#8 member located in the former Fein Brothers restaurant supply store at 2007 North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive.

Since its formation in 1992, the mission of the Historic King Drive Business Improvement District (BID#8) has been to improve the district by fostering a culture that enjoys a trendy and authentic retail experience, while attracting businesses that embrace the commitment to hard work and strong character that the area was founded on, according to information from the company website. In the past 15 years, the BID#8 has been responsible for more than $400-million of new development within the corridor.

In addition to a brief report on the BID#8 future strategic plans, guests - which included owners and staff of local businesses within the Historic King Drive BID#8 district, BID#8 staff as well as staff from a variety of community organization partners - were treated to complementary food and beverages; a panel discussion on the state of development, arts and business in the districts; an awards presentation and the opportunity to network.

The majority of the food, awards and materials distrib-

uted during the meeting were purchased from more than a dozen different local BID#8 business members.

The Historic King Drive BID neighborhood is one of Milwaukee’s oldest commercial/residential corridors. Its boundaries have expanded north recently. The southern border remains McKinley Avenue. To the west the border zigs and zags along Sixth Street. To the east it mostly follows second street and its newer northern border is Capitol Drive, according to information provided during the panel discussion.

The area was first settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s, according to information on the BID#8 website. The area gradually saw African Americans starting businesses and families beginning in the 1920s, joining an already bustling small business community made up of many Jewish Milwaukeeans. Today, the neighborhood is experiencing revitalized growth in commercial and housing development, according to Raynetta (Ray) Hill, BID#8 Executive Director.

“This was a special year,” she said in a closing presentation titled Reflecting and Looking Ahead and alluding to the BID’s 30 years in existence. “We have left our 20s and now we have to make sure that the work we do matters. That is why we are creating a strategic framework to guide us over the next few years.”

The newly renovated Fein Brothers Restaurant Supply Company building, now operated by Food For Health Milwaukee, was the host location for the 30th Annual Meeting of the Historic King Drive Business Improvement District (BID) #8. More than 110 people attended the event. BID#8 is a quasi-governmental agency funded through commercial property taxes and designed to help business and property owners seeking financing, business expansion, retail and office locations, new business opportunities and more.

Members of the Historic King Drive BID#8 board of directors at the Annual Meeting on January 20, 2023, included (from left): Tosha Freeman, Harambee community member; Ashley Booth, Brewer’s Hill community member; James Phelps, board president and JCP Construction; Jasmine Johnson, IHeart Media; Ray Hill, BID#8 executive director; Susan Kissinger, Team Management; Sharon Grinker, It Had to Be You LLC Property Management; Sam Cunningham, Pete’s Fruit Market; and Lynda Jackson Conyers, Black Excellence Awards/ Louvenia Johnson Scholarship Foundation. Being Frank

“If you won’t let me bring you up, then I refuse to let you bring me down.” The controversial Reverend Ike once made a statement similar to this. This statement is one that should be adopted by everyone on the planet earth. There are billions of people who live to either share misery or create it. Why listen to issues or problems that the person telling you does not want to solve? Why waste time gossiping about events that have nothing to do with you? This is where the internet and social media have mislead people. The concept of everyone is connected is a line of feces that people need to run from. Be honest, do you really want to be connected with some people? Tell the truth and shame the devil. Many people do not want to be bothered with some family members, so why are you connecting with strangers and adopting their problems?

I was at school in the hallway when an older African American man started talking about an issue. I

You may want to disconnect

sick part is that these people do not even realize that the content is negative. These people are unconsciously getting their fill of misery to cure their craving.

did not know what he was talking about and did not want to know what he was talking about. Yet, this man proceeded to keep talking about the issue – police murdering someone. This man was getting worked up and I kept saying, “Bro, I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t want to know.” The man looked in pain as I tuned him out. Finally to shut him up I said, “Man, whatever you are talking about does not seem to make you happy. I am happy, so I don’t want to hear it.” That made him glare at me and walk away. I shook my head in wonder because his mindset resembles the one many people in the world have.

Advantage®

That is the mindset designed around the old saying, “Misery loves company.”

Facebook is chock full of people who seem to have an addiction. The drug of choice is misery. That is why I choose not to go on Facebook. With the explosion of internet porn, people have adopted the 'S-and-M' mindset when dealing with life. In short, many people are mental pain freaks. I say this because why else would someone go online and look up misery from across the globe and devour it mentally? This is where the internet and social media lead people into depression. You hear constantly that people are more

connected than ever before; yet is the world becoming a better place for this? Look at the effects of social media and the internet on children. Keep in mind these children who are shaped by these two mediums will one day be adults.

If you walk into any restaurant and see two people dining, there is a great chance that the people will be on their phones. When you walk into a school that hasn’t banned cell phones, you will see students on the phone in class or walking the halls. The people who live for social media or internet are usually devouring forms of negative news or entertainment. The

Keep Reverend Ike’s words in mind. Do not let anyone ruin your happiness with their issues. The world has been turning for billions of years and will continue to do so. Your span of time is for your enjoyment. In order to do this you may have to disconnect from people and media platforms. Try it. All you are missing is an unhealthy dose of misery.

MPS hosts Kindergarten Enrollment Fair on February 4, 2023

Join us to learn about Head Start and kindergarten options in Milwaukee Public Schools! MPS will host a Kindergarten Enrollment Fair on Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at North Division High School. The fair will help families explore schools, make choices, and enroll students for Fall 2023.

More than 100 schools— all MPS schools that offer Head Start and kindergarten—will have staff available to chat about programs, answer questions, and help identify the best options for children. Interpreters will be available. Children are welcome so they can hear about school programs and be ready to attend in fall.

Families can learn about the many programs and offerings in MPS schools including arts, bilingual pro-

grams, language immersion, Montessori, International Baccalaureate (IB), and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs.

The district provides free breakfast and lunch for all students. Many schools have before- and after-school care to accommodate parents. Bus transportation is available; each school can provide information. Uniforms are worn by students in some MPS schools. Wisconsin law requires children to complete five-year-old kindergarten before entering first grade.

The first 100 families who fill out an enrollment application will receive a free child’s T-shirt and backpack with school supplies. Families who wish to apply on site should bring the following information:

• Child’s name, address, date of birth

• Parent/guardian name, address, phone number, and email address; help is available for families who need an email address

To enroll your child in Milwaukee Public Schools, visit our enrollment web page at

https://mps.milwaukee.k12. wi.us/en/Schools/How-toApply.htm.

Head Start

Free preschool is available through the federal Head Start program for families who meet income limits. Head Start prepares children

for school and teaches important early skills. Transportation is available.

Kindergarten

• 3-year-old Kindergarten: Limited programs are available at some schools. Children must turn 3 by September 1, 2023 to be eligible.

• 4-year-old Kindergarten: Programs are available at most schools across the district. Children must turn 4 by September 1, 2023 to be eligible.

• 5-year-old Kindergarten: Programs are available at most schools across the district. Children must turn 5 by September 1, 2023 to be eligible.

For questions about enrollment or the Enrollment Fair, call 414-475-8159.

Getting to know the organizations and individuals helping to make our community better Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's is a family affair

Denotra Griffin-Wallace always enjoyed being the matriarch of her extended family. According to her oldest daughter, Sarita Griffin, her mother was the “glue” that held the family together. So, when Denotra was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease about seven years ago, the entire family suffered.

“It’s not the same now. We were always gathering at her place,” Sarita said, adding that everyone spoke with Denotra so that if you wanted to know what was going on in the family, all you had to do was contact her.

Sarita said the family had to move her mother out of her duplex house. After the diagnosis, she moved into an apartment building with her youngest daughter. Sarita said she works full time during the week, but that she is available to help care for her mother several weekends a month.

“My mother was a very en thusiastic churchgoer before she became sick,” Sarita said. “When she comes to visit, I take her to church and we play Gospel music on the radio while we’re at home. Those are usually good times for her.”

Sarita said her mother is usually cheerful and cooper ative, but once in a while she can become unreasonable. Other times, she may absent mindedly pick up things and stash them away in her pock et or a strange place. Sarita said once while staying at her place, her mother put the re mote control to the television in her pocketbook and it was a week before anyone found it again.

At first these changes in her mother were hard for Sari ta, but she said she gained a lot of new insight into what she and her family were ex periencing after attending a

workshop titled “Caring for the Caregiver: A Day for Me” that was sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association Wisconsin Chapter on November 19, 2022.

less likely to become bored and try to wander when she is busy, so she tries to keep Denotra focused on cheerful activities when she visits.

“Despite the heartache, I have grown closer to my mom while caring for her,” she said.
