War Memorial Center unveils new exhibit honoring African American Veterans On Monday, February 3, 2020, The War Memorial Center unveiled their much-anticipated exhibit on African American contributions to the U.S. military, just in time for Black History Month at the War Memorial Center, 750 N Lincoln Memorial Dr. The mural, which is located on the third floor of the center, documents African American participation in all the wars fought by the United States. From Crispus Attucks (the first American to die in the American Revolution) to troops who served in Operation Desert Storm, displays placed throughout the mural tell the stories of Wisconinites who served. Among the many guests at the unveiling was keynote speaker Marcia Anderson (pictured), the first African American woman to become a Major General in the U.S. Army Reserve. "We've wanted to do something like this for a long time. It's critical that we all honor the contributions of African American service members who played a pivotal role since the birth of this nation in protecting the freedom we all cherish," said Dan Buttery, President/CEO of the War Memorial Center.

Our Community
An Op Ed By: Vince Bobot Candidate for Milwaukee City Attorneys' Office
We must establish the sense of family in Milwaukee By Vince Bobot
talization of our downtown area. Milwaukee must form a team of dedicated leaders with the insight, talent and commitment to improving our City.
I have been urged by many people in our community to write this article about the importance of establishing a sense of family when confronting the problems facing our city. A sense of family means many things and carries with it many obligations.
Sitting on the sidelines is not an option. Our next City Attorney must be present in the community. The City Attorney and staff must be actively involved in advocating for the people in Milwaukee. Success in dealing with the problems facing our city demands just that. Maintaining the status quo will not get the job done. A new direction must be undertaken if we are going to return Milwaukee to a prominent place in our Nation and State. This op-ed is by paid for by Bobot for City Attorney.
In seeking the position of City Attorney, I made the decision to dedicate the remainder of my life to public service. So family has a broad meaning to me. The sense of family means our community, our city and the people who live here. Establishing a strong healthy family demands a personal commitment from our elected and community leaders to the people who work and live here. Milwaukee is our home. Elected leaders must do the things necessary to deal with the problems facing it.
From the north to the south, east to the west, our community must unite. We should not ignore or discredit the grim statistics concerning As your next City Attorney, racial segregation, crime, unI pledge to you tireless dedi- employment, neighborhood cation to making Milwaukee deterioration, and the lack of a safe place to live, work and home ownership. Together raise a family. We are a team. we can find solutions to any
problems confronting our City. Milwaukee is coming back. It is now time to take the fight to our neighborhoods. House by house, block by block and neighborhood by neighborhood, we can replicate the success of the revi-

Are there any Black people left? It is Black History Month in the USA. This is the month the Caucasians allow African Americans to openly celebrate their history. During this month you will hear about the people Caucasian society has accepted and allow African Americans to celebrate. Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, etc., will be dusted off and paraded around this month. There will even be Black History programs in most public schools. The trillion-dollar question is, “Are there any Black people left to celebrate their history?” There are around 41 million-plus African Americans in the US, according to the US Census Bureau. How many of this number are truly Black? I am not talking about skin tone, but Black in their mind and soul? That leads us to the question, “What is a Black person?” Hmm. Let’s attempt to answer this conundrum. I have said for decades that there is a difference between an African American and a Black person. In my opinion an African American is one who has totally embraced www.milwaukeetimesnews.com
positions in education and African American children have only advanced in the number of special education students. The religion ruse is obvious. No one prays as much as African Americans. Yet the African American community is rife with crime and lack of morals. These disgraceful facts are manifested even with a church on almost every corner of the African American community. the US culture. This is the person who always uses the word “we” when referring to topics pertaining to elements of US society. You will hear this African American talking about the economy saying, “Our economy…” Or when referring to white owned sports teams, “We need to fire our coach…” What I’m saying in 2020 is nothing that Malcolm X didn’t say in the 1960’s. Sadly, sixty years later many still don’t grasp the concept of identifying with anything in US society is counterproductive to Black people. Another difference between an African American
and a Black person is they believe the feces that is Caucasian propaganda. This African American believes in education, religion, anything Caucasians put in front of them. Education is feces at best for Black people in the US. Education in the US is a form of White propaganda at its best and subliminally anti-Black. The African American believes that the white education system is the way to freedom. With this mindset this African American grasps the worthless titles bestowed, Doctor or Master, and thinks it makes them someone. This is why in 2020 there are many African Americans in power
I know a great number of people do not like what I’m saying, prove me wrong. Right. Let’s continue with the differences between a Black person and African American. A Black person knows that something is horribly wrong with the way the world is going. A Black person knows that everything in the US is mutable, a tool to be used. Education is nothing but something to use for a time being. A Black person understands that Caucasians have used religion to conquer more countries than guns. A Black person understands that the most important battle against Caucasians takes place in their heads. A Black person understands
that fear of everything is one key tool Caucasians use to keep African Americans docile and subservient. A Black person knows that the community is saturated with sell out African Americans who want to keep the status quo in place. A Black person understands that this Oreo/ Dove bar African American has been so mis-educated and programmed until they are tainted beyond repair. These African Americans only see their self-worth through Caucasian standards. A Black person understands the saga of this African American and uses it as a warning to stay sharp and Black. This leads us back to the question, “Are there any Black people left?” What are you? Modeling God’s love during Valentine’s month and beyond! (Week 2) “…love Him with all of your heart, with all of your understanding and with all of your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” - Mark 12:33
According to Hallmark, approximately 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged industry-wide (which does not include packaged kids’ valentines for classroom exchanges). According to the National Retail Federation, the average person celebrating Valentine’s Day spent $143.00 in 2018. Cards bought for Valentine’s Day is second only to the number of Christmas cards that are sent yearly. On Valentine’s Day, people show their love by showering their beloved with gifts, in the form of cards, flowers or candy. I will use this column this month to celebrate
God’s love by pointing out ways God’s people can model God’s love by being an example of the love that God showers upon us every day! This week I will share two examples of ways you can show God’s love to others. Love others in small ways. Love is priceless. Love can be expressed by a warm smile, a kind gesture, a call just to say hello, or a pat of encouragement on the back. Sometimes, all a person needs is to know that someone cares. This month, begin making a list of ways you can show love to others in small ways, then intentionally show that love to others. Serve others. This writer is passionate when it comes to serving others. When we sacrificially serve others, we show tangibly what God’s love looks like. Our love for others should not just be shown to those in our family and
friend circles, but to those even around the globe. While serving and sharing with others may at times involve sharing monetarily, that is not always the case. Consider the following examples: 1. Assemble a care package for a needy family by using the items in your own kitchen cabinets. 2. Offer to clean the home of an elderly person or neighbor that is disabled or physically or visually impaired. 3. Invite a single person, widow or college student for a meal with your family. The fellowship alone brings joy to a lonely heart. It’s never too early to teach children, youth and teens the joy of serving others. It is a concept that will stay with
them for a lifetime. If you are looking for a resource for a small group study for your young people that includes outreach/service opportunities, I encourage you to obtain your copy of: A Gospel Generation: Bible Studies for Youth Around the Globe (Lester, Judith T., Townsend Press, Nashville, 2017). A Gospel Generation is translated in more than 100 languages and is available to youth/teen groups all over the world. Order your copy at: https://www.sspbnbc.com/ store/books-bibles/books/a-gospel-generation-bible-studies-foryouth-around-the-globe/ Beloved, as we celebrate Valentine’s Month, may you be inspired to show godly love to others as the love you show to others reveals to the world you are a God-follower! A Prayer For You: Dear God, serving and loving others is the least we can
do to show our love for God. Pray that God will present you opportunities to model God’s love through service and loving others. Amen. Black boys want to cry…when will we let them? He was the oldest brother of my first love. This gangly energetic boy who always had a smile on his face. Never took life too seriously, always looked out for me and made sure I felt included- no matter the game being played. He was known as “Crow” in our neighborhood and come to think of it, it was a most fitting nickname- for he definitely looked like one. As the years passed, our lives shifted until I lost contact with my love and his family; so you can’t even begin to picture the horror of finding out that on April 13, 2014, Crow shot and killed his wife as their children slept and then drove to a secluded parking lot and turned the gun on himself. Even now I can’t process how someone so loving and so sweet could do something so vicious. How could the boy who shared sunflower seeds and hot chicken fresh out of the grease, and protected me as if I was one of his siblings, carry out such monstrous acts? In all the media coverage that followed I knew better than to think there would be anything that revealed his past, because that’s just not how our society works. There can only be one victim, and so no one cared about the tears of his loved
ber his light, and I remember his joy, and I pray that his soul is finally at peace. And randomly when I pass little black boys and I look into their eyes, I wonder if there is anyone crying for them, and protecting them, and
ones- we were forced to cry silently. The story of my beloved friend’s older brother, as gutting as it is, is not uncommon. Too many times and for far too long we have trained our young men in the same guerrilla tactics used to strip them of their innocence and vulnerability halfway around the world. As a result, they’re breaking before our very eyes. Unresponsive, incapable of experiencing love, broken yet breathing, and it is heartbreaking to see. Even as the rest of society is seeing a decline in teen suicide rates, in African American teens it is on the rise and while this subsect is being lowered among teenage girls… it is rising for Black boys specifically according to Amy Green, director of research for The Trevor Proj-

ect, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization. So, what is to be done for them? Even still, what is to be done when this pipeline to sadness funnels itself into adulthood? Are we just supposed to idly sit by as an aspect of our demographic drowns in emotional quicksand? All around mental health facilities are shrinking and those that are available are not necessarily tailored to youth depression. I don’t have any answers, but I know that this needs to be discussed and addressed because it is another silent killer destroying the future of the Black community. There are moments when I think back on my childhood and I remember Crow and his family and despite his tragic end- I smile. I remem-

Howard University receives Walters gift of art and endowed chair announcement Internationally renowned scholar and activist Ronald W. Walters, Ph.D., was recognized as a leading political strategist and expert on issues affecting the African diaspora. A dedicated leader, Walters served as a professor in Howard University’s Department of Political Science for 25 years and was department chair for nearly a decade. In honor of Walters’ legacy, his wife, Patricia Turner Walters, is gifting Howard University with her coveted collection of African American art, valued at $2,519,950. “It is an incredible honor to receive this generous gift of precious art from the Walters family,” said President Wayne A. I. Frederick. “This collection of sculptures and portraits and paintings will be an excellent complement to our gallery and a beneficial focus of training in our art history courses.” Additionally, the University will establish the first Ronald W. Walters Endowed Chair for Race and Black Politics to continue Walters’ legacy of expanding the University’s capacity as a leader in emerging scholarship in Black politics. The chair will be housed in the Ronald W. Walters Leadership and Public Policy Center at Howard University. It is intended to spur interdisciplinary collaborations across the University on critical issues of race and Black politics, especially those issues that affect Americans of the African diaspora. “Dr. Walters was a giant among scholars here at Howard University, nationally and internationally, and this endowed chair is designed to be a reflection of his unique history as an activist, a political strategist and a trailblazing academic professor. This gift comes at the perfect moment to expand our students’ involvement in the political conversations of our time,” said Frederick. The gift of art includes 152 pieces of African American art of various forms.
“Glory” (ca, 1960) by Elizabeth Catlett The collection includes original pieces, sculptures, rare prints, photographs and pieces from notable eras, including the Harlem Renaissance. “I could not be more delighted about the decision to give my art collection to Howard, the institution that my husband cared so deeply about,” said Walters. “I always knew I wanted to do something like this to honor my husband’s legacy, but I never imagined that I would get to see it happen in my lifetime. I am grateful to President Frederick for working with me to make this possible. I could not be happier.” Patricia Walters began her collection in the late 1980s, amassing most of her pieces after 2002. The collection, dear to the Walters family, became a notable part of the couple’s collective legacy as people in their community reveled at the collection over the years. It features artists like Robert S. Duncanson, Edward M. Bannister, Grafton Tyler Brown, Aaron Douglas, Norman Lewis and Romare Bearden, as well as contemporary artists like Kehinde Wiley, Barkley Hendricks, Kerry James Marshall and others. More information about the art collection and endowed chair will be available during the spring semester. For more information about Ronald W. Walters, Ph.D., visit the Ronald W. Don Sykes Legacy Award
2019 Board of Directors
The Social Development Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to present the Don Sykes Legacy Award. This award is annually given to an individual who the Board of Directors feels best reflects the Social Development Foundation’s mission and the life and legacy of the late Don Sykes. The mission of the Social Development Foundation is to generate awareness, identify resources, and secure support to advance the efforts of the Social Development Commission.
Stanley Brister
Don Sykes is remembered as one of Milwaukee’s most prominent antipoverty activists. As part of President Bill Jefferson Clinton’s administration, Sykes served as director of the Health and Human Services Office of Community Relations. In Milwaukee, Sykes was executive director of the Social Development Commission for two decades (1968–1988). He is celebrated for a career of service and his fight to empower people experiencing poverty. He was truly a legend in our community. Don Sykes passed away in 2017, but his work continues to inspire advocates working on behalf of people experiencing poverty every day. Therefore, it is fitting that the Social Development Foundation, dedicated to the elimination of poverty, annually select a member of the community, who, like Don Sykes, works tirelessly to move people beyond poverty.
