Race for Milwaukee Mayor: Johnson, Donovan advance to general election

Acting Mayor Cavalier Johnson and former Alderman Bob Donovan have advanced to the spring general election in the race for Milwaukee's next mayor.

As returns began to roll in the evening of Tuesday, February 15, 2022. Johnson and Donovan were the early leaders. Johnson declared victory before 10 p.m. Tuesday. "With so much of what we are facing, it's racial injustice that's left us in a worse place. Our health care outcomes are worse for Black and brown people. Our educational achievement is worse for Black and brown folks in Milwaukee. Our wages are worse for Black and brown folks here in Milwaukee," Johnson said. "By building a safe, strong prosperous city for all, that's how we make

"I think in the Black community, we have to deal with homeownership, entrepreneurship and access to opportunity. If we want to fix public safety, we've got to dig into the root to do it. Dimitrijevic sent out a statement late Tuesday saying, in part, "Milwaukee’s never elected a woman to lead it, much less a mom. While we didn’t manage to break that particular glass ceiling this time around, we did show Milwaukee, and all of its women and young girls, that a woman could run a campaign that could be taken seriously." The more than 23,000 absentee votes were added into the count just before 11 p.m., confirming Johnson and Donovan as the unofficial winners. The spring election is April 5, 2022. The race will fill the seat left by former Mayor Tom Barrett, who is now the U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg.

Margaret Arney (pictured above) is shattering a centuries-old glass ceiling in Wauwatosa this election season. The District 2 candidate for alderperson is running unopposed, making her poised to become the first Black person on Wauwatosa's Common Council in its 100-year history. She is a proud graduate of Rufus King High School and Harvard University. Arney said growing up as a biracial woman in Milwaukee opened her eyes to some of the same racial disparities that exist today. "I grew up crossing the color line on the bus," she said. "The bus would start off all white in my EastAn HTGroup, LLC Publication

side neighborhood, go all Black to my school, then go back to all white. It wasn't until I went to college... it was a whole different world. I was like 'wow other places don't have this color line'." Arney said that's when the seed of service was planted. "I wanted to be part of my hometown growing past and leaving behind the color line," she said. "I want my daughter in my descendant's world not to have a color line. We don't need it, we never needed it and we need to say goodbye to it." Arney has been heavily involved in the community for years. She's served as President of the Wauwatosa Neighborhood (Continued on pg. 2)

On Sunday, January 30, 2022, Essential Prenatal Care, LLC and Bloom Prenatal Care, LLC presented the "Women's Empowerment Vision Board Brunch," at 2703 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The leadership team at Essentials Prenatal Care wanted to bring clients in for an in-person activity. The event was hosted by Nita Farrow, auditor for Milwaukee Public Schools. There was guest speaker Jacarrie Carr, owner of Jacarrie's Kicks 4 Kids, and others who shared their experiences and information about their business, how they started and how the stayed the course when times got tough. The participants then created vision boards as a way to put their personal goals on paper and communicating those visions to others. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Milwaukee Press Club hosts mayoral candidate forum

On Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at the Historic Turner Hall Ballroom, the seven candidates for Milwaukee mayor squared off in a Q&A forum hosted by the Pabst Theater Group, Milwaukee Press Club, WisPolitics.com, Listen MKE and Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. Those included were Acting Mayor Cavalier

Johnson, former Alderman Bob Donovan, State Sen. Lena Taylor, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell Lucas, business owner Michael Sampson and community activist Ieshuh Griffin. The February 15, 2022 primary election determined who will make the ballot in the April runoff election.

"Good public policy does not come from a place of fear," she said. "Good public policy comes from a place of understanding assets and working together and rising to our highest capability." Arney said one of her main priorities as alderperson will be to listen and to promote inclusion. "To me inclusion is a big value and is something that is becoming more and more

deeply aware of in my own self. It's a big deal to be inclusive" she said. "The LGBTQ community, people who are immigrants, refugees, people with language barriers... there is not just one story." Arney hopes she is not the only person making history after the Spring election. Two candidates running in different districts could also join Arney as the first Black representative on the com-

mon council. In District 5, Sean Lowe who currently serves as the chair of Wauwatosa's Equity and Inclusion Commission is running against incumbent Rob Gustafson. In District 8, John Larry is running against Melissa Dolan. Those seats will be decided by voters on April 5.

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

2022 Black History Analysis It is February and Black History Month in the USA. Many African Americans complain that their history month, February, is the shortest month of the year. This is a true statement, but since when can beggars be choosy? It’s time to take a Frank look at the 2022 African American in order to decide if the race has progressed or digressed. Slavery in the USA was abolished on paper in 1865. Let’s examine the 2022 African American’s status and see how it matches up with slavery. We will use quotes from To Be A Slave, written by Julius Lester to assist. “Just stay near the white folks and I would have nothing to worry about,” according to Edward Taylor. Taylor said this because of misplaced faith and the unusual cruelty of his era. Yet, in 2022 how many African Americans believe this concept? How many professional negroes race to white suburbs to be next to white folks? How many parents send their children to schools where the majority of the students are white? How many African Americans choose white folks as love interests because they feel safer and respected? You can understand Taylor because the USA was differ-

tion the money factor. Everyone knows the money any athlete is paid is pocket lint to the amount the team owners make. In slavery the prize buck got the choice shack and pick of the women, after master took his turn.

ent in his time. Or was it? Moving on with our analysis, let’s look at the prize buck, the male slave. A slave who could perform any service, from fighting to running the plantation, was of high value. Naturally, the goal of many slaves was to impress the master in order to get some perks on the plantation. “I could run faster, wrestle better, and jump higher than anybody about me…” – Josiah Henson. Henson was born in slavery, so it’s understandable that he would be exploited. Why then is the 2022 African American male still running and jumping? How so, you ask? In organizations, like the NBA, NFL, MLB, and WWE. The African American female has been ensnared via the WNBA. Don’t men-

Henson eventually became superintendent, then overseer of the plantation. Henson was even tasked with taking the other slaves to Kentucky without his master, or any white person. On the way, Henson and the other slaves passed along the Ohio shoreline. People told the Henson party that they were in Ohio and were free. Henson ordered the boat to keep going ensuring master’s property made it to Kentucky. In 2022, how many African Americans are enforcing laws or acting as an agent for whites? How many African Americans have come to covet the positions that the 2022 master has bestowed upon them? How many African Americans will oppress other African Americans and fight to keep white society standing? In 2022 master continues to let his chattel run the show in various forms. Upper management positions, coaches in all sports, education, law enforcement, government, are some key examples of

Master’s benevolence. It is Black History Month. How will this yearly celebration look in future years? Many people say that to celebrate or tell the Black experience in the USA puts white people in a negative light. With this kind of thought being put into society, will African Americans abandon their token history month to appease the whites? In 2022 African Americans are at levels of society the slaves could never have imagined. Yet, what has changed? Are African Americans truly free? Are they an independent people who control their own destiny and minds? Have African Americans become everything they abhorred in the past because many don’t know history? Look around and watch TV, then say the answers to the

previous questions to yourself. One final quote from, To Be A Slave. “The native Africans are revengeful in their tempers… They generally place little, or no value upon the fine houses… and discover no beauty in the fair complexions of their mistress… and only want power to inflict the most cruel retribution on their oppressors.” - Charles Ball. African American Suffragists (Week 2) CHARLOTTE VANDINE FORTEN (1785-1884) In honor of African American Suffragists, this week let’s look at Charlotte Vandine Forten (1785-1884) who set the stage for Women Abolitionists. Charlotte Vandine Forten was the matriarch of a financially well-off and prominent Black family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Forten's husband, James, was a sailmaker. Her daughters, Margaretta Forten, Sarah Louise Forten Purvis and Harriet Forten Purvis, often referred to as the "Forten Sisters," were, along with their parents, active in the abolitionist movement. she opened her own school. She supported the women's rights movement, working to obtain signatures for a Women's National League petition. Margaretta never married, and lived in her parents' home as an adult, as did her two younger brothers, Thomas and William.

Honoring

Black History Month We Celebrate Black History Our Black publications have been telling stories for years about historical giants such as Dr. Charles Richard Drew, who pioneered a method for preserving blood plasma. Remember George Washington Carver? He discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut and sweet potato. And Benjamin Banneker helped establish the boundaries of Washington, DC. We have heralded the victories of Frederick Douglass and Fannie Lou Hammer, and recently reflected upon

the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Congressman John Lewis, Cicely Tyson, and Sidney Poitier. We celebrate the firsts of President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris. Each history-maker is a study in change, commitment, and courage. Who makes your list?

To learn more about your ancestry, consider becoming ONE IN A MILLION with the All of Us Research Program. All of Us Pastoral Champion, Reverend Marilyn Miller, President of Leading for Racial Equality, LLC, decided to join All of Us because of the work of Pastor Teresa Black History celebrates Thomas-Boyd. She stated, successes and inspires “As we age, we reflect upon new achievements leaving a legacy. Dr. Corbett is a history-making researcher and immunologist. She is one of the designers of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Kizzy, as she is often called, was born in Hurdle Mills, NC. She developed an early interest in public health and research and acquired her doctorate from the University of Maryland. Kizzy spent several years in Sri Lanka studying the SARS virus. This led her to leadership roles at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where she and her team developed the Moderna vaccine. Her accomplishments have been acknowledged worldwide.

Be one in a million. It’s our differences that can make the difference. The All of Us Research Program has a simple mission: to speed up health research. To learn more or to enroll: Phone: (414) 955-2689 Email: allofus@mcw.edu

You are Black History Celebrate your history and your accomplishments. As our ancestors left legacies of achievement and love and values that are treasured, you too must do the same. Help support work like Dr. Corbett’s by joining the All of Us Research Program. All of Us is creating a resource that will allow researchers to conduct thousands of studies on health and disease. The All of Us Research Program is currently enrolling at several locations in the Milwaukee area.
