Milwaukee Recreation hosts 17th Annual Father/Daughter Dance On Saturday, February 15, 2020, Milwaukee Recreation, Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative, and The Social Development Commission hosted the 17th Annual Daddy/ Daughter Dance at North Division High School, 1011 W. Center St. This year's dance hosted more than 1,000 fathers with their daughters, dressed in their best attire. The evening began with a dinner, followed by the dance and featured a dad dance-off. The dance provides a great way for fathers to strengthen their relationship with their daughters.

Milwaukee Urban League Guild share the love of reading with Auer Ave. students

On Friday, February 14, 2020, The Milwaukee Urban League (MUL) and the Milwaukee Urban League Guild (MULG) launched a brand new community services initiative called, "If You Love Me, Let Me Read to You!" The program was spearheaded by MUL President and CEO Dr. Eve M. Hall (center), and launched at Auer Avenue School, 2319 W. Auer Ave., with the help of Auer Ave. school principal Dr. Zannetta Walker. The program has volunteers coming into schools and allowing the students to read to them. This encourages the students to read more, increases their comprehension, and generally instills a love of reading in them. This is part of a larger literacy program, "Read with the League," that the MUL will be officially launching within the next few months. The MUL and MULG, along with Auer Ave. School, hope to expand the program to other Milwaukee schools.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. hosts 'Pink Goes Red for Heart Health' On Friday, February 7, 2020, the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Inc./Upsilon Mu Omega Chapter honored national "Wear Red Day" and kept their hearts healthy by hosting an evening of line dancing, "Pink Goes Red for Heart Health." Members of the sorority and the community got their heart rates up in an effort to live healthy life styles. This event was free and open to the public. The AKA President is Brigitte Hyler Richerson and Vice President is Candice Wright.

White House budget proposal cuts $8.6 billion from HUD Programs serving low-and-moderate income consumers to end or suffer severe cuts

By Charlene Crowell Once again, the White House Budget Proposal slashes funding and programs that many low-and moderate-income consumers rely upon.

From higher education to a repeated attack to deny the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau its full funding and financial independence from the annual congressional appropriations process, efforts to increase support to businesses continue while retreats from programs that citizens have come to rely upon is the crux of the proposal’s fiscal priorities.

Among federal agencies, one of the most severe budget cuts would occur at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). A proposed 15 percent reduction from current funding levels will mean $8.6 billion would either eliminate or severely cut programs serving many of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens and communities.

“This Budget advances our key priorities, including empowering HUD-assisted families to achieve self-sufficiency,” HUD Secretary Ben Carson said. “For generations, the idea of the federal government providing housing assistance meant only one thing—helping to pay the rent so families can have a roof over their heads.”

Housing experts have a different perspective.

“With this proposal, President Trump and Secretary Carson make clear their willingness to increase evictions and homelessness – through rent hikes for some of the lowest income people in subsidized housing, and slashing or eliminating funding for programs that keep the poorest people in our country affordably and safely housed,” said Diane Yentel, President and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

For example, Public Housing’s Capital Improvement Fund that provides revenues for major repairs would end, while the Public Housing Operating Fund would be slashed 21 percent. Together, these two cuts would worsen housing conditions for the estimated 1.2 million households living in public housing units, managed by some 3,300 local Housing Authorities across the country.

The biggest portion of the HUD cuts would end the $3.3 billion Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program that uses a formula to support more than 1,200 metropolitan city, county and state governments. An additional 214 counties receive direct CDBG grants.

week to reach out to others by being a living example of God’s living love, not just during Valentine’s Month, but every day!

Show God’s love to someone/anyone/ever yone.

There are 29 days during the month of February in 2020.

That gives us 29 days this month to begin a personal mission to show God’s love to someone/anyone and everyone. Jesus told the disciples that He was giving them a new commandment, that they love one another, even as Jesus has loved them, that you also love one another.

Jesus said, showing this type of love will show everyone that they are Jesus’ disciples.

(John 13:34-35.)

Where do you start? We have people in our communities who are suffering.

Also, we often fail to recognize the people who are hurting, even in our own lives– a friend, family member, neighbor, coworker or classmate. Sometimes, all it takes

Every February, Valentine’s Day is celebrated; however, it reaches its climax once the month of February is over. When it comes to God, God’s love has no end, is slow to anger, patient, forgiving and abounds in love. God’s love extends farther and deeper than we can see, feel, fully comprehend or measure. God’s amazing love sweeps all the way from eternity to the Cross and beyond! God’s love is a sacrificial love which holds nothing back, extending to the point of sacrificing God’s only begotten Son! Is there anything better than that?! As I conclude this series of articles, may you be inspired by these two additional examples this

is a look across the room, a look next door, or a look towards the person we run into every day on our way to work or school who may need love shown to them. There are always opportunities throughout our day to show God’s love. Make God’s love real in someone’s life by intentionally looking for ways to show love to others.

Pray for others. Nothing is more comforting to others than when someone offers to pray for them or with them.

Prayer is actually the most valuable thing we can do for a person. Never underestimate the power of prayer!

It’s Vital. Uplifting. Imperative. Essential. Critical and Crucial. When we pray, God hears. Don’t get hung up on how or the manner in which you pray for others. What’s important is that you pray for them.

Beloved, the love of God is greater than romantic or human love. Sometimes, love gets a bad reputation

because of disappointments experienced in relationships (e.g. broken love, betrayed love, shattered love, etc.). If you can just hold on the reality that God’s love is higher than romantic/human love, you will be able to lean on and trust the steadfast, faithful, forgiving and constant love of God through any situation or disappointment.

Those of you who have felt and experienced the profound breadth and depth of God’s love, mercy and grace can testify with me that in God we have found absolute and unreserved love and acceptance. If you are not doing so already, may this month’s article series move you to allow God’s love to flow out from you to others.

A Prayer for You: Dear God, may we all rejoice in the kind of love that God has for us and allow God’s love to trigger us to reach out and share God’s love with others. Amen.

Remembering Thalia Beatrice Winfield October 17, 1924 -January 5, 2020

Thalia B. Winfield, 95, died peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2020. Born in Surry County, Virginia on October 17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William and Naomi Winfield. She attended Christ Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for more than 60 years and faithfully served as treasurer,council member of presbytery, and elder.

Thalia graduated from Isle of Wight Training School and earned a degree in business administration from Virginia State University in 1947. She later graduated

with advanced certification from The Savings and Loan Institute. She began her professional career at Storer College in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (1947-1949) and then moved to Atlanta where she was secretary (1949-1954) to the late Dr. Benjamin Mays, president of Morehouse College. During her tenure at the college, she met and befriended the young Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr., a student at that time. While in Atlanta, Thalia became an active member early in the Civil Rights movement al friendship with Dr. King and enjoyed a long person- that continued long after she

COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM coach Pat Baldwin writes about the process of overcoming adversity

By Pat Baldwin Men’s basketball coach University of WisconsinMilwaukee One of the more popular catchphrases in sports today – you hear it all the time from coaches and athletes – is “trust the process.” As in, “We’ve just got to trust the process and we’ll get through this adversity,” or “I’m trusting the process and seeing improvement.”

What does it mean, exactly, and how can it be applied in jobs or occupations that have nothing to do with bouncing, hitting or throwing a ball?

Trusting the process simply means trying to do what you believe is right, every single time. I think it’s easy, as we go through struggles or adversity, to get off track. The trust comes from knowing you’re moving in the right direction, doing it the right way and not compromising your belief system.

In January, we had a stretch where we won five out of six games and beat some

Every team is going to go through lulls, periods of cold shooting and tough losses.

That’s when it’s important to trust the process. How do you handle adversity? Do you have the mechanisms, people

and support in place to push through it?

It starts at the top. It starts with leadership, whether it’s me or my staff. We always try to figure out what’s the best way to get through a period of struggle. We don’t try to reinvent the wheel. We try to stay the course. And then it’s the leadership on your team.

We’re dealing with 19- to 23-year-old men. Are your

older guys able to stay strong during periods of adversity?

I had breakfast with our seniors recently, just to make sure they’re relaxed and not putting too much pressure on themselves. What I want them concentrating on is having fun and playing as hard as they can.

You look for guys that are resilient in times of stress.

When I played, my coach used to say, “How do you respond to chaos?” Recently, we experienced chaos from the standpoint of not getting the wins that we wanted and expected. So, can you be resilient, can you fight through it? But also, can you remain calm during the storm?

That’s trusting the process.

I think basketball is a metaphor for life. You have to persevere. If you’re a salesman, there may be times when you make 25 calls and hear “no” 25 times. Or, you’re in a board meeting

or a sales meeting with your colleagues and you’re comparing what other companies are doing versus what you’re doing. You just have to believe in your product, you have to believe in your co-workers. And there has to be a strength in the core in order to get through slumps or sales lulls.

I believe strongly in the vision for our program here. I believe we have the capabilities and resources to build a championship program, but it takes time. If I show any doubt, or if there’s any wavering on my part, our guys will recognize that right away.

If I don’t trust the process, how can I expect my players to buy in?

We talk constantly about the fight that you have to have and the importance of maintaining an eagerness to want to win. I will always have that, no matter what.

MPS students showcase Black Lives Matter projects February has been a busy month in Milwaukee Public Schools as students have spent time researching, designing, and showcasing projects celebrating Black History Month. During the first week of February, the district recognized the national Black Lives Matter in School Week of Action with public events and classroom activities.

Maple Tree School held an exciting, interactive event attended by parents and filmed by TMJ4. Students researched famous Black Americans, then stepped into their roles by portraying their subjects as figures in a wax museum. Visitors could press a button to make students come to life and tell the stories of their chosen historic figures. Students learned about the accomplishments of their subjects and also about the struggles and challenges they overcame on the road to success.

At Fernwood Montessori, younger students studied Black inventors and explored the many devices that have changed our world and improved our lives, including electronics, computer parts, cosmetics, the red-yellowgreen stop light, and peanut butter. Older students researched Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and collaborated to create a large banner with messages about peace and

justice.

Students at Curtin Leadership Academy explored the lives of a variety of Black Americans and discussed the impact of their contributions on daily life. They hosted an event for families and the community to view their work, ask questions, and enjoy a lengthy timeline highlighting the impact of Black Americans throughout history.

Forest Home Avenue School welcomed players from the Marquette University men’s basketball team, who read to third graders and talked about their personal journeys through school that led them to Marquette.

Students were inspired to ask many excellent questions about college and playing sports at a high level.

Discovering Our Deep Cultural Roots In The Arts

Ron Husband: The Story of Disney’s First Black Animator

Who was the first African American Disney animator?

Most Disney geeks, like myself, will answer “Floyd Norman” and until a few weeks ago, I would have said the same thing. However, I am wrong (and you probably are, too). While Floyd Norman did work for Disney animation, he was never technically an animator and the title of first black animator at Disney truly belongs to Ron Husband.

There are many jobs in animation, but the title of “animator” is one that has to be earned. From the early days at Disney until the 1980’s, an artist had to produce 100 feet of animation to get a screen credit. And in terms of rank, most artists started as in-betweeners, then were promoted to assistant animators and the lucky few became animators. Floyd Norman’s career diverted from the path of an animator while at Disney as his talents were most effectively used in the story department.

Ron Husband, on the other hand, found himself on the path to becoming an animator and unintentionally became Disney’s first African American one. Fresh out of college, Ron had a wife and two children and took a technical art job to provide for his family. With an unfulfilled thirst for creativity, he signed up for a night class lead by Sam McKim, who encouraged Ron to submit his portfolio to Disney Animation. Head of the training division at the time was Eric Larson, who saw promise in the loose sketches of an artist who hadn’t considered animation as a career prior.

Back in 1975, all trainees were given four weeks to prove their talent on an animation test. To Ron’s benefit, the judges took into account how much experience each candidate had in animation (in Ron Husband’s case, no prior experience). Among the group of trainees at the same time were Glen Keane, Tad Stones and Jerry Rees and rather than a cutthroat environment, the trainees all supported and encouraged one another, even though only one-in-three typically lasted to a fifth week at the studio.

Ron’s first assignment outside of training was as an in-betweener reporting to Frank Thomas on The Rescuers, which was midway through production at the time. Working on nights and weekends, he earned a promotion to assistant animator on Pete’s Dragon. Shortly after being promoted to an ani-

mator on the short The Small One, Husband underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor that would temporarily slow him down.

By the time Ron was back to work full time, production was underway on The Fox and the Hound and he lent his talent to Copper and Chief. Ron was there to experience the climate change at Disney as the studio moved towards live action films for adults and away from animation, relocating the animators from the building Walt built just for them to a series of warehouses.

For much of his time at Disney in the 1980’s, Ron was repeatedly assigned crowd and multi-character scenes. Within animation, these are among the least desirable tasks. However, Ron was able to devote his free time to illustrations and became an ambassador for Disney Animation, visiting schools to teach kids about the animation process and sparking a lifelong love of teaching and mentoring. He was able to break free of his crowd work on The Rescuers Down Under when he became a character animator for the first time on the character of Cody.

For Beauty and the Beast, Ron worked on the character unit for Gaston. But perhaps his most iconic moment in the film is the spoons diving into the punch bowl. Glen Keane provided Ron with a caricature of himself next to a drawing of "Beast" during production, citing Husband jokingly as the character’s inspiration. The caricature back-and-forth between Husband and Keane dates back to their first office at the studio in the mid-70’s, which they both shared fresh out of training.

After moving into the current Sorcerer Hat animation building, he became a lead animator on The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Esmerelda’s goat "Djali." For his character research, he spent a morning at Disneyland in the now extinct Big Thunder Ranch area to study goat anatomy. After completing Hunchback, Ron was trained

in computer animation for “The Dinosaur Project” (the Disney CGI film Dinosaur).

However, his desire to continue in the hand-drawn medium brought him back to help on the traditionally animated Hercules.

Ron got the opportunity to be lead animator on another character while wandering the halls of the Fantasia 2000 unit. The “Firebird Suite” sequence had leads for the Sprite and Firebird, but the Elk was still uncast. Using his Djali experience, he proved his talents and took over for that character.

It’s not often that animators get to revisit characters from films they previously worked on, especially since Disney animation has not produced many sequels. But

Ron found himself making additions to Beauty and the Beast with the musical sequence “Human Again,” as well as The Lion King with “The Morning Report” (he worked on Scar, Timon & Pumba in the original film).

And in a rare occurrence for an animator, some unseen animation that likely would never seen the light of day resurfaced for the 10th anniversary of Pocahontas when “If I Never Knew You” was added back in (Ron was one of the animators of John Smith).

In 2001, Atlantis: The Lost Empire made history for featuring the first black character in a Disney film with Dr. Sweet. It seems only fitting that Ron Husband, the first African American animator at Disney, would lead this character’s journey to the screen. Ron Husband was responsible for the final design and was the lead animator on the six-foot-six doctor on the Ulysses voyage to the lost city.

Like most traditional animators at Disney, Ron Husband found himself displaced in 2004 when the studio made the decision to abandon traditional handdrawn animation, but it was

not the end of his Disney career. Ron took several animation jobs, some outside of Disney, and worked for Disney Toon Studios on projects, including 3 months in Australia training a team of veteran animators. His passion for teaching continues to this day, and he will also be part of a panel discussion about diversity in animation this week at San Diego Comic-Con, alongside Floyd Norman.

Ron Husband has recently retired, but before leaving Disney for good he spent several years as an artist for Disney Publishing. Walt Disney Feature Animation called Ron during this period to ask if he would be interested in returning to animation on The Princess and the Frog, but it would have meant giving up a steady job with no guarantee of work beyond that film (and there sadly hasn’t been a hand-drawn Disney film since 2011). However, fans can learn more about Ron Husband through his blog, which features some amazing pictures and scans of employee invitations and fliers from his time at the studio.

The Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation (MLKEDC) is seeking proposals for the preparation of its yearly audited financial statements and related filings for a three-year period beginning with the 2019 fiscal year ending on December 31, 2019.

Our organization does not require a federal single audit. The audit of MLKEDC’s financial statements must be performed in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards.

MLKEDC is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1993 to revitalize the Harambee neighborhood in the City of Milwaukee. MLKEDC’s mission is to engage in entrepreneurial initiatives to create wealth and jobs, provide technical assistance to area businesses and develop quality, affordable rental and owner-occupied housing. Since 1998, the main focus of the organization has been on the development of affordable housing and commercial and office facilities that serve the Harambee neighborhood. Since its founding, MLKEDC has been directly responsible for over $50 million of real estate development which in turn has leveraged millions of dollars of additional investment in the surrounding neighborhood.

MLKEDC owns and manages 190 affordable housing units, of which 142 are held in four different limited liability companies, some involving partnerships with other entities. These LLC’s are audited separately and are not the subject of this RFP, although the results of those audits may impact the audit of MLKEDC. MLKEDC is also involved in the ownership and management of approximately 75,000 sq. ft. of office and retail space, approximately half is managed directly by MLKEDC and half is managed through another entity.

In addition to its management portfolio, MLKEDC is also engaged in new real estate development activity involving the acquisition and rehab of existing, single-family homes for resale to owner-occupants as well as the development of new, multi-family, mixed-use projects.

MLKEDC has received government funding from Community Block Grant Administration of the City of Milwaukee, from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and Office of Community Service in the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

MLKEDC also multiple financial relationships with WHEDA. MLKEDC’s staff consists of two part-time staff. MLKEDC has total assets of approximately $15 million and our annual revenue has ranged between $970,000 and $1.2 million and over the past 3 years.

MLKEDC requires the following services: 1. Annual financial statement audit.

2. Preparation of IRS form 990 3. Preparation of Charitable Organization Annual Report for the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions.

4. Management letter All of the above must be completed within 180 days of the end of each fiscal year, in order for our Board to review each document prior to its submission to the appropriate recipients.

In addition, MLKEDC requires that a meeting of the auditors and select MLKEDC board and staff members be held to discuss a draft version of the financial statements and that the auditors meet at least yearly with the Board of Directors.

All proposals must include: a) Evidence of the firm’s qualifications to provide the above services; b) Background and experience in auditing nonprofit clients involved in real estate development activity; c) The size and organizational structure of the auditor’s firm; d) Statement of the firm’s understanding of work to be performed, including tax and nonaudit services; f) A proposed timeline for fieldwork and final reporting; g) Proposed fee structure for each of the three years of the proposal period, including whatever guarantees can be given regarding increases in future years, and the maximum fee that would be charged; h) Describe your billing rates and procedures for technical questions that may come up during the year, or whether these occasional services are covered in the proposed fee structure; i) Names of the partner, audit manager, and field staff who will be assigned to our audit and provide biographies. j) A copy of your firm’s most recent peer review report, the related letter of comments, and the firm’s response to the letter of comments; and k) References and contact information from at least 3 comparable nonprofit audit clients.
