On Saturday, February. 18, 2023, Milwaukee Public School's Recreation Department hosted their "18th Annual Daddy/Daughter Dance" at North Division High School, 1011 W. Center St. This was the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that the dinner and dance has been held and, just like in previous years, the dance was a sell-out. The dinner and dance was presented in partnership with the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative.

UW Health launches fellowship program to offer increased treatment to patients with chronic headaches

Millions of people in the nation suffer from migraines and headaches, and about 9 percent of them are chronic, with many cases going undiagnosed. UW Health is launching a program to help confront the need to get more specialty-trained physicians into the workforce to diagnose and treat these people, so fewer people have to suffer if they can be treated.

UW Health has partnered with the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford to help patients suffering from headaches and migraines by launching a fellowship program that trains doctors specifically in dealing with headache disorders.

According to a press release issued by UW Health on Wednesday, February. 22, 2023 the one-year Headache Medicine Fellowship Program accepts one applicant for "comprehensive training" in the clinical, research, and social aspects of treating people with headache disorders.

The program aims to teach physicians to apply the latest techniques such as nerve blocks and Botox treatments,

in addition to the use of medication regimens and complementary therapies such as exercise, physical therapy, and biofeedback among other therapies.

The Headache Medicine Fellowship Program is open to physicians in any specialty that intersects with headache treatment. In addition, fellows will learn from other specialists who treat and diagnose those with head pain disorders, like allergists, physical therapists, ophthalmologists and more.

A primary care physician from UW Health is the first physician to join the fellowship. Dr. Sarah Robertson

noted that she appreciates the variety of specialties that are involved in the program, saying in the press release, "I could just see the pain and suffering this person was going through, but even as a medical student I felt like I couldn’t help my family member; I just didn’t know enough about headaches."

She added, "Once I got into residency, I met with so many patients with migraines or headaches and saw just how much it impacted them, and it really motivated me to learn more about how to help them."

CHILD WATCH

“You either care about protecting kids or you don’t”

“As we sat at our desks working on our computers, we began to hear loud pops…I thought I was going to die. As I laid there, I begged God to please make it fast… My classmates pulled me behind a filing cabinet where I called my mom and my dad and said what I thought would be my last goodbyes. I told them how much I loved them, and asked that they please tell my brothers the same. I was so petrified that I began hyperventilating. My classmates had to cover my face so the shooter wouldn’t hear my cries and come back. I will never forget that day. What I saw. What I did. What I experienced. What happened to my classmates.”

“I was sitting and my professor was lecturing, and then I heard either three or four—I could hear gunshots directly behind my head, and I could see the smoke… Immediately, I dropped to the floor with all my classmates, and someone was yelling that there was a shooter and everybody needed to get down on the ground. And at

that moment I thought that I was going to die. I was so scared. I didn’t cry, which is surprising for me. I just kind of kept quiet, and I called my mom…My classmates in the back of the classroom started to scream for help, and my other classmates jumped into action, trying to help everyone…I will never forget the screams of my classmates, because they were screaming in pain for help.”

The first quote is from testimony 17-year-old high school senior Aalayah Eastmond gave before Congress as she described how she survived the mass shooting that killed 17 of her classmates,

Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage®

teachers, and friends at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, five years ago on Valentine’s Day 2018. The second is from a television interview Michigan State University sophomore Claire Papoulias gave on Tuesday morning, Valentine’s Day 2023, as she described the mass shooting that just had happened hours earlier on Michigan State’s campus, killing three students and critically injuring five others.

I thought I was going to die…I called my mom…I will never forget.

Why do we continue to allow this to happen to our

children? We are now seeing young Americans who’ve gone through the same trauma more than once, including several of the students at Michigan State. One freshman who lost two friends in a school shooting in Oxford Township, Michigan in November 2021 called her mother as she heard the gunshots and watched people fleeing the student union building Monday, February 13, 2022, crying, “Mom, I just want to come home.” At a news conference the morning after the Michigan State shooting, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), whose former district included Oxford Township, said, “For me, the most haunting picture of last night was watching the cameras pan through the crowds and seeing a young person wearing an ‘Oxford Strong’ sweatshirt, the sweatshirts that were handed out after those kids lived through a school shooting fifteen months ago. We have children in Michigan who are living through their second school shooting in under a year and a half. If this is not a wake-up call to do something, I don’t know what is.” Before that Rep. Slotkin said: “I am filled with rage that we have to have another press conference to talk about our children being killed in their schools. And I would say that you either care about protecting kids or you don’t. You either care about having an open, honest conversation about what is going on in our society, or you don’t. But please don’t tell me you care about the safety of children if you’re not willing to have a conversation about

keeping them safe in a place that should be a sanctuary.”

At the same news conference, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said: “We know this is a uniquely American problem. Today is the fifth anniversary of the Parkland shooting. We’re mere weeks past the Lunar New Year shooting at a dance hall, and a few months past a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, and looking back at a year marked by shootings at grocery stores, parades, and so many other ordinary everyday situations. We cannot keep living like this.” She continued: “Our children are scared to go to school. People feel unsafe in their houses of worship or local stores. Too many of us scan rooms for exits when we enter them, and many of us have gone through the grim exercise of figuring out who our last call would be to . . . As parents, we tell our kids, it’s going to be okay. We say that all the time. But the truth is, words are not good enough. We must act and we will.”

We must act. Once again, parents were left grieving this week whose children will never again call on Valentine’s Day or any day with the message I love you. Until every adult in this nation who says they love children is willing to protect children instead of guns, no parent will be able to promise their child that they will be safe, and more families will continue to suffer this all-American trauma.

Celebrating Black History All Month Long!

Four reasons why we should celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month is a time where we recognize the key roles, contributions, and sacrifices of African Americans throughout U.S. history. This month-long observance grew from an initiative by Carter G. Woodson, a brilliant and highly accomplished son of slaves, to honor the heritage and achievements of African Americans with a week-long celebration in 1926.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford designated February as Black History Month, urging all Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Every U.S. President since then has issued a proclamation in honor of Black History Month. Today, countries all over the world also dedicate a month to celebrating Black History Month.

Here are four reasons we should all, regardless of our own heritage, celebrate Black History Month, along with a few suggestions for how to celebrate:

1. It celebrates diversity. Black History Month does not just promote diversity; it celebrates diversity. Promoting diversity is bringing awareness to the idea that we are all diverse and we all have something to contribute. But when we celebrate diversity, we are conveying the idea that diversity is beautiful. A celebration goes beyond recognizing the achievements of African Americans. It publicly honors these men and women. It tells their wonderful stories in a way that makes us realize how they have impacted our lives— how our lives would not be the same if these people did not take risks to accomplish amazing things.

One way to explore and celebrate diversity: visit Dallas' own African American Museum, the only one of its kind in the Southwestern Region.

2. It unites us.

Celebrating diversity and recognizing its beauty brings us together. It helps us to learn about people from different cultures and backgrounds, and to understand how we are all connected. And finding this connection unites us.

Doesn’t it feel good when family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors get together to celebrate us and our achievements? Don’t we feel connected when a group of people from all areas of our

lives come together to celebrate a graduation, birthday, or promotion? These celebrations bring joy when we see people from different walks of life or different parts of the family (that don’t necessarily get along) put aside their differences to celebrate.

This is what celebrating special months or days of the year can do to a larger group of people. When we celebrate the achievements of people, groups and cultures from around the world, we are putting aside our opin ions and differences to com memorate our shared history and to take joy in each other’s success. When we celebrate one another, we realize how our differences can actually bring us together rather than tear us apart.

The Fort Worth Opera of fers a unique opportunity to explore the unifying power of celebration at its annual "A Night of Black Excellence" concert, featuring interna tionally recognized vocal and instrumental artists.

3. It takes us beyond the history books.

Throughout school, we take some form of history: World History, U.S. History, and European History. Typical ly, in our history textbooks, we focus on the “major play ers." Oftentimes, they leave out lesser-known figures that have accomplished incredible things.

Rather than letting the history books tell us who is important, we can celebrate special months like Black History Month to give us an opportunity to learn about other historical figures that have impacted our lives and world.

Lewis Howard Latimer and Elijah McCoy

For example, in histo ry class, you probably have studied about Thomas Ed ison and the light bulb. But do you remember a guy by the name of Lewis Howard Latimer, an accomplished inventor and engineer who helped Edison by creating a longer-lasting filament for the light bulb?

Or what about Elijah Mc Coy, a member of the Na

tional Inventor's Hall of Fame who held more than 50 patents? Even today, we acknowledge the impact of his inventions with the phrase, "the Real McCoy," which means "the real thing."

Ida B. Wells Barnett and Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. And even if we celebrate the figures written into our

history books, we can take the time to learn about their lives beyond their names and basic facts. In history, you might have learned about Ida B. Wells Barnett, a prominent activist and journalist. But you might not know that she was an orphan from the age of 14 and took a teaching job to keep her brothers and sisters together. Or that she was forced to flee Memphis to escape a mob of protesters when she started an anti-lynching campaign.

You might have heard about Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., the first African American general in the U.S. Air Force. But you might enjoy learning more about his contributions in World War II and his leadership of the acclaimed Tuskegee Airmen.

Going beyond the textbook paints a different, much richer picture of history.

4. It helps us understand the importance of our stories.

Black History Month is about sharing and celebrating the stories of countless men and women who made a difference in our world. Some achievements are noted more than others. But all of their stories reveal how they changed the world...and how we can, too.

However we choose to observe Black History Month, we can allow the four reasons mentioned to guide our celebration of diversity all year round.

Royalty inside our DNA

How a Milwaukee photographer used visuals

America’s largest genetic research program in history.

Terrance Sims is a renowned photographer from Milwaukee who has been using his camera to capture the stories of community members for more than a decade, with a particular focus on African American and Latinx communities. Recently, Sims partnered with the All of Us Research Program to create a photo campaign called "Royalty Inside Our DNA," which explores the concept of generational legacy and its impact on health outcomes.

The "Royalty Inside Our DNA" campaign centers around the idea that every individual has a royal legacy within their DNA, which is passed down from generation to generation. Sims' photographs capture the intergenerational connections that exist within families and communities, showcasing the beauty and strength of the human spirit. The campaign also highlights the importance of generational legacy and how it impacts our health outcomes.

The All of Us Research Program is a national research initiative that aims to collect data from one million or more people in the United States to accelerate health research and medical

breakthroughs. By collecting data from diverse communities and populations, the program can help to iden-

tify health disparities and provide insights into how to improve health outcomes for all individuals. The program

also gives back genetic and ancestry information to participants to inform the future of science and improve community health outcomes.

One family that was featured in Sims' recent campaign is the McKay family, which spans four generations of women. Shardae McKay, the founder of a hip-hop fitness class called “Stepping Out With Shardae,” set up the photoshoot for her family to be spotlighted. She understands the power of generational legacy and being connected regarding health, as her grandmother is also a breast cancer survivor. Shardae takes her grandmother's

health history into consideration to inform her own health decisions.

Terrance Sims' "Royalty Inside Our DNA" campaign is a vital highlight of The All of Us Research Program. It showcases the power of generational legacy and its impact on health outcomes. By participating in this program, individuals can contribute to a larger goal of improving community health outcomes through the power of science and technology. Two myths and one fact: The misconceptions about breast cancer

Breast cancer is one of those illnesses that has many stages to it. Not only does it have many stages, but it also has many misconceptions about it and how it works. If you are living with breast cancer, it’s easy to assume the worstcase scenario because of how frightening this sickness can be. Not only are there different stages of breast cancer, but there are many different names for certain breast cancers as well as certain causes and treatments. Since breast cancer, in itself is so vast, there’s no question as to why there are so many myths that circle around by word of mouth and through articles that can cause someone living with it a real scare. This is why it’s important to understand what the facts and myths are of breast cancer. The five stages of breast cancer

Classifying breast cancer in stages helps determine the best method of treatment and whether or not there is a chance to cure it. During breast cancer staging, you will find out how far the cancer has progressed. There are five different stages ranging from 0 to 4 in roman numerals – 0 being where the cancer is contained within the milk ducts and is noninvasive and 4 being metastasized

During the winter months, temperatures are cold and the sun is in hibernation. This can bring on increased stress and strain on your immune system.

Yep, it’s not just your imagination that you tend to get sick more often during the cold-weather months. While colds can strike at any time, they are more common in

breast cancer (spread to other organs).

A doctor will determine what stage the breast cancer is based on the size of the tumor. A doctor will also check to see if the cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body, how aggressive the cancer cells appear to be when placed under a microscope, or if the cancer cells have a gene mutation to identify to which stage of breast cancer it has developed.

• Stage 0 is noninvasive breast cancer, meaning there is no evidence of cancer cells or non-cancerous abnormal cells.

• Stage 1 is invasive cancer where the cancer cells invade the surrounding breast tissue. This stage is usually classified into two subcategories, 1A and 1B.

• Stage 2 is invasive cancer where no cancer is found in the breast but instead found in the lymph nodes under the arm or the lymph nodes under the breast bone.

• Stage 3 breast cancer is invasive cancer where the cancer has spread to one or three axillary lymph nodes and is larger than

5cm.

• Stage 4 is an invasive breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastasized) such as the lungs, liver or brain.

Two myths and one fact about breast cancer

As stated previously, since this is such a complex type of disease, there are many misconceptions about breast cancer, how it works and what can happen when someone is diagnosed with it. Many times a myth gets heard before a fact, for example:

Myth: Most women who have breast cancer have a family history of breast cancer. This information is false

seeing as though only 15 percent to 20 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of it.

Myth: You have to decide on a treatment option immediately after you are diagnosed. This statement is not applicable because you want to find treatment fast to stop any growths or spreading of the cancer; but finding the best treatment option for you and your body is the most important. This requires extensive research and working alongside your doctor.

Even with all the misconceptions, there are facts about breast cancer that are important to know.

Fact: The risk of breast cancer increases with age. Fifty

Five stress - reducing vitamin supplements

the fall and winter, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Flu activity also peaks between the months of December and February.

While all this news may tempt you to hide inside under a blanket until April, that’s hardly a realistic approach to thwart illness. Instead, wash your hands more

frequently and avoid hanging out with friends who are sick. And consider giving your body an extra boost by adding a handful of winter vitamins and supplements to your daily regimen. By taking just a few extra pills each morning, you could be saving yourself literal headaches in the future.

Here are five winter vitamins (and supplements) you should take this season:

1. B-vitamins

Now more than ever, vitamin B is an essential vitamin to add to your daily diet due to its immune system-boosting benefits. Vitamin B1 has also been shown to help with heart function. Vitamin B6 is of particular importance as it supports protein and glycogen metabolism and along with vitamins B2, B3,

percent of breast cancer patients are women over 60. This is a true fact that many people are probably not aware of. Though anyone can get breast cancer, this disease is primarily a disease of older women.

Why it’s important to know the truth

Knowing the truth about breast cancer can save a life. If you know how breast cancer works and most of its subcategories, then you can learn how to navigate it better. Learning what stage you or someone you know may have will help you determine which treatment options work best for that stage of cancer. This will also help you with some do’s and don’ts on what you should be consuming with your diet, how you should be exercising, what to expect during treatment and more.

Talking to your doctor, going online and finding proper and accurate research; and reaching out to support groups and organizations are all ways to find the correct answers you may be looking for. Remember, though, that there are myths out there about breast cancer so paying attention to the facts is more important.

our jobs.

B5, and B12 can help reduce tiredness and fatigue to support training intensity.

However, it is the benefits of, in particular, vitamin B-12 that makes vitamin B a must-have supplement during the winter months and plays a role in producing “happy” brain chemicals that can positively affect mood.

Moreover, low B-12 levels have been linked to depression. Depression and stress increase during the winter months, so vitamin B is highly recommended to keep you feeling spry and more hopeful during the winter. It’s also been reported that vitamin B has been found to reduce fatigue, which can be essential since most of us have been tasked with working from home, and have higher productivity expectations from

2. Vitamin C Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps ward off free radicals. It’s also known as a close friend of the immune system and has been known to assist in fighting off the common cold during colder seasons. Since we don’t naturally create vitamin C on our own, it’s essential to get it through our diets with green vegetables like broccoli, citrus fruits, sweet potatoes, and strawberries). Of course, supplements are a great source as well.

The recommended daily amount of vitamin C for men is 90 mg and for women is 75 mg.

3. Vitamin D

This is a fan favorite among physicians when advising patients to help strengthen their bones, as it helps our bodies absorb calcium easier. Recent developments have also found that vitamin D helps support our immune response, meaning a deficiency could lead to increased susceptibility to sickness. Diet and the sun are usually our main sources of daily vitamin D intake, so during the gloomy winter months, it’s essential to add supplements to our daily routines.

Stress - reducing vitamins

(Continued from pg. 11)

The recommended daily amount of vitamin D for adults between the ages of 19 and 70 is 600 IU with a target of vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels of at least 30 mg/mL.

4. Zinc

This essential mineral helps the body’s immune system fight off viruses and bacteria—making it a true champion during the cold season. Zinc has also been found to help with acne, which can affect our self-esteem if not under control.

“Zinc has been shown in studies to be effective in preventing and reducing cold symptoms,” said registered dietitian LeeAnn Weintraub in an interview with Cardiff-SportsNutrition.com. “It helps prevent viruses from adhering to cell walls in the

nasal passage and is involved in antibody production, an important immune system process.” If you aren’t already taking zinc and you feel like you’re getting sick, Weintraub said to start taking zinc supplements right away to “feel better sooner.”

The recommended daily amount of zinc for men is 11 mg and for women is 8 mg.

5. Probiotic supplements

These supplements help balance out the good bacteria in our guts, thus supporting our immune system in fighting off illness.

Since winter is the cold and flu season and can also exacerbate COVID-19 symptoms, it’s high time to strengthen your immune system with good bacteria. Probiotics have been found to help replenish the good gut bacteria and alleviate stomach troubles.
