He brings with him direct knowledge of the Chamber's operations and long term goals, including the growth of African American business owners, professionals and entrepreneurs, and the Chamber as a self-reliant business organization. "We are excited to have Avery back who we know through his years as a board member to be a talented and trusted leader," said Clifton Phelps,

U.S. Cellular and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee announce results of Black History Month Art Contest

UPAF will premiere a special video the artist filmed a few months ago to support annual campaign The world lost a celebrated jazz vocalist when Milwaukee native Al Jarreau passed away on Feb. 12 at the age of 76. For his hometown the community lost a native son who remained a passionate advocate for young people and the importance of the performing arts in bridging differences and bringing people together. In fact, it was just this past Fall when Jarreau returned home, continuing to work with budding musical artists at area schools. For the 2016 United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) campaign, Jarreau penned an opinion piece citing the importance of the community banding together to support the arts, especially arts education in our schools. For 2017, UPAF’s 50th Anniversary Campaign, Jarreau went in front of the camera and articulated how the performing arts can serve as a game-changer in turning around young lives. On March 6, 2017 at The Milwaukee Rep, UPAF will pay homage to Jarreau and debut that short video the seven-time Grammy-winning artist specifically shot for UPAF.

The late Al Jarreau In the 2016 article, Jarreau wrote, “Music is my passion and my motivation. It is most important that we assure that future generations of Milwaukee children have the same opportunity that I hadto participate in the performing arts. The work of UPAF, and that of each of its donors, are a force for positive change, and that is worthy of our support.” UPAF’s 50th Anniversary Campaign Launch begins at 5:30 p.m., and will also feature performances by UPAF’s Member Groups through the last 50 years. You can register for the event ($10) by visiting www.bit.ly/2017UPAFLaunch.

Xzavier Lidesma’s portrait of Malcolm X was voted second place, and Sophia Armendariz’s portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. earned third place. Each winner had their artwork framed and presented to them during a special ceremony at the Don & Sallie Davis Boys & Girls Club. The three winners also received VISA gift cards of $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for

third place. The ceremony followed a month-long contest in February in which artwork featuring prominent African Americans submitted by 8 local Boys & Girls Clubs members was displayed in select U.S. Cellular stores. The public was invited into the stores to vote for their favorite works of art. The contest celebrated the artistic ability of community youth and honored influential African Americans in history. “We are so proud of all the young boys and girls who entered this contest,” said Scott Hanson, U.S. Cellular Area Sales Manager for Milwaukee. “U.S. Cellular is committed to supporting the talents of local youth and celebrat-

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

“Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry:” Controlling the beast within (Conclusion) This month’s series title is a quote made popular during the series, The Incredible Hulk. David Banner (portrayed by Bill Bixby) played the scientist whose DNA is altered by gamma rays. When Banner gets angry or outraged, he transformed to The Hulk played by Lou Ferrigno. The quote: “Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry” comes from the first episode where Banner catches a nosey reporter hanging around. Banner catches the reporter and delivered to him the quote which implies: stop snooping or else. This month this writer has centered attention on anger, its effects and causes. In this conclusion, we will look at how one can go about repairing the damage done to those whom they have hurt when one has lost their temper. Just like broken down automobiles need repairing, wounded, hurting people need healing. While the Lord is the Great Physician, that does not nullify your part in the healing process toward

the person offended. If you have hurt someone: 1. Ask how have I hurt you? 2.. Listen to the hurt without justifying your actions. 3. Verbally mirror back the emotions you heard expressed. 4. Don’t disown, deny or blame. 5. Confess. Say: “I realize my angry attitude and actions have hurt you. Please forgive me.” Remember, a wise person chooses to respond softly while a foolish person chooses to respond harshly, because it is how we say something that reveals more about our character than what we say. Perhaps that is why the Apostle James said in 1:19: “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Beloved, angry feelings that come and go motivate us. Those that come and stay embitter us and make us cynical. Let anger move you, but don’t let it move in with you. No, we cannot control fellow

trouble releasing current or old anger, or you need help managing anger, thus controlling the angry beast within; you are encouraged to talk to your pastor or biblical counselor. Next Month: Why must we suffer? A theological perspective The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’

workers, bosses or others in the world around us, but we can control what we think, feel and do. We can learn how to be aware of our anger problem, develop empathy for others and learn how to relax, develop a sense of humor and to take time-outs to regain emotional control. When one begins to consider that much of how we react is learned behavior, and that our children seem to repeat those behaviors that they have seen modeled in the home, seems to add force and poignancy to this statement. If you are experiencing unresolved anger, are having

efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in this article, as they may not be necessarily appropriate for every situation to which they may refer. Board approves districtwide uniform policy The Milwaukee Board of School Directors has approved a district-wide uniform policy that will be in effect for all schools beginning in the 2017–18 school year. The policy sets basic uniform guidelines for all district schools; for example, pants must be tan, navy blue or black khaki-style pants. School communities have the flexibility to use their school colors for shirts. Proposed 2017–18 school budgets have funding to support the uniform policy. Schools can opt out of the uniform policy if 66 percent of the school community votes to do so. Individual students may opt out if parents request an exemption in writing. Two district surveys revealed that the majority of parents support the move to uniforms. Research indicates school uniforms can contribute to a positive school environment, which is an important part of improving student achievement. The Board also approved several changes to MPS school programs; these changes are designed to increase academic opportunities and better serve students

and families. The changes will take place in Fall 2017. • Clara Barton School – will realign to a kindergarten–5th grade school • South Division High School – will create a small school-within-a-school to offer additional support to help students graduate • North Division High School – will create a small school-within-a-school to offer additional support to help students graduate • James E. Groppi High School, Project STAY and Transition High School – will focus on providing behavioral support for students Two schools will close at the end of the 2016–17 school year – Community High School and New School for Community Service (NSCS). In place of NSCS, the Board authorized New School for Youth Empowerment as an instrumentality charter school for the 2017–18 school year. The school will serve high school students.

Cheerleaders at Rufus King win second state championship

The Rufus King cheerleaders kept their eyes on the prize as they traveled to Madison on Saturday, February 25, 2017 to compete in the Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches (WACPC) State Championships. Hard work and a hunger to bring home the title of state champions earned the team first place in the Cheer Dance Large division. It was the team’s second year in a row winning a state title. The Rufus King squad was the only MPS team compet-

ing in the event, held at the Alliant Energy Center. King competed at the state level in 2011 and 2012, and won the state championship in 2016 in the Cheer Dance Small Division. This year, the girls edged out Racine Horlick by nine-tenths of a point and ended Horlick’s three-year winning streak in the Cheer Dance Large division. Third place in the division went to Waukesha West. The squad is coached by three alumnae of Rufus King – Veronica Bohannon, Robin Anderson and Jamisha Glad-

ney. Rufus King International High School is consistently a top-rated Wisconsin public high school according to U.S. News & World Report and The Washington Post, and offers a strong focus on academics, activities and diversity. Athletics and extracurricular activities are part of the MPS Eight Big Ideas: Educate the Whole Child strategy to improve student achievement. Congratulations to the Rufus King cheerleaders and coaches!

Seven ways to keep your feet healthy with diabetes Foot problems are common in all people with diabetes. However, African Americans are at greatest risk. In 2012, African Americans were hospitalized 3.5 times more for lower limb amputations as compared to whites. The good news is you can lower your chances of having diabetes-related foot problems by taking care of your feet every day. Managing your blood glucose levels can also help keep your feet healthy. What causes diabetes foot problems? One of the complications of diabetes that can have a negative impact on foot health is diabetic neuropathy, a type of nerve damage. Diabetic neuropathy can cause tingling and pain and can make you lose feeling in your feet. When you lose feeling in your feet, you may not feel a pebble inside your sock or a blister on your foot, which can lead to cuts and sores. Cuts and sores can become infected.

Peripheral vascular disease, another complication often seen in people with diabetes, can lower the amount of blood flow in the lower part of your legs and feet. Poor blood flow deprives the skin and other tissues of oxygen and decreases the ability of white blood cells to get to the site of infection to promote healing. Improper healing can lead to gangrene and amputation of your toe, foot, or part of your leg. The following tips can help lower your chances of having diabetes-related foot

problems. • Check your feet every day. Foot problems can develop overnight. Check the top and bottom of your feet every morning and before bed each night. Look for problems such as cuts, sores, red spots, swelling or fluid-filled blisters. If you notice any problems with your feet contact your healthcare provider immediately. • Wash your feet every day. Wash your feet with soap in lukewarm water. Use your elbow to test the water temperature. Do not soak

your feet because your skin will get too dry. After washing and drying your feet thoroughly, put talcum powder or cornstarch between your toes. The powder will keep the skin dry to help prevent an infection. • Smooth corns and calluses gently. Never cut corns and calluses yourself. Talk with your foot doctor about the best way to care for these foot problems. If you have nerve damage, corns and calluses can become ulcers leading to infection. •Trim your toenails straight across. If you cannot reach your toenails easily, leave the task of cutting them to your foot doctor, along with your corns and calluses. If you want to get a pedicure at a salon, you should bring your own nail tools to prevent getting an infection. •Wear shoes and socks at all times. Do not walk barefoot or in just socks – even when you are indoors. You could step on something and hurt your feet. Check the inside of your shoes before putting them on, to make

sure the lining is smooth and free of pebbles or other objects. •Make sure you wear socks, stockings, or nylons with your shoes to keep from getting blisters and sores. Choose clean, lightly padded socks that fit well. Socks with no seams are best. •Wear shoes that fit well and protect your feet. •Protect your feet from hot and cold. If you have nerve damage from diabetes, you may burn your feet and not know you did. Wear shoes at the beach and on hot pavement. Keep your feet away from heaters and open fires. Do not put a hot water bottle or heating pad on your feet. • Get a foot check at every health care visit. Ask your health care provider to check your feet at each visit. Take off your shoes and socks when you’re in the exam room, so they will remember to check your feet. At least once a year, get a thorough foot exam, including a check of the feeling and pulses in your feet.

Do you really need to remove your wisdom teeth? To pull or not to pull your wisdom teeth, that is the question. While many believe that wisdom teeth removal is a necessity, that’s not always the case. In fact, whether or not you

need to have your chompers pulled depends on several factors including formation, position, and overall health of the tooth. You may be asking yourself, ‘Then why did my dentist suggest hav-

ing them pulled?’ According to experts, this suggestion is based on age-old assumptions that once fully formed, wisdom teeth can cause serious problems. Dr. Cherae Farmer-Dixon,

DDS, MSPH, dean and professor of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, typically tells her patients, “If the wisdom teeth are not bothering you, don’t bother them.” Of course, “not bothering you” must be put into context Dr. Farmer-Dixon cautions. It’s possible, she explained during a recent interview with BlackDoctor.org (below),”They could not be bothering you, but because of how they’re positioned over time they could have bone resorption and cause problems down the road.” Dental x-rays are the only way to know what’s really going on with your wisdom teeth. In order to understand the purpose of wisdom teeth removal, you need to understand the problems that can accompany formation of wisdom teeth, like overcrowding in the mouth, partial formations (creating a prime place for bacteria to flourish), cysts and chronic pain. You should consider having your wisdom teeth pulled when: Your wisdom teeth don’t fit in your mouth. Most adults have room in their mouth for about 28 teeth before your wisdom teeth erupt. Add four wis-

dom teeth and there are now 32 teeth competing for space in your mouth. If your jaw isn’t large enough, the wisdom teeth can become impacted, which results in one of two things. One, they are either unable to fully form or two, they become misaligned. In this case, having your wisdom teeth pulled will ensure all your teeth sit well in your jaw. Your wisdom teeth don’t come in straight. For some, your wisdom teeth may come in fully, but they form horizontally. This can cause pressure on neighboring teeth, eventually causing your teeth to shift and move over time. Other times, teeth may only partially come in. When this happens, a pathway is created between your teeth and gums making it difficult to brush. This area quickly becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to tooth decay. You have an infection Often chronic pain is an underlying sign of an infection like cysts forming around the teeth, tooth decay, gum disease, or worse, a tumor. If you are experiencing any of these as a result of your wisdom teeth, it may be a good idea to have them removed. (Continued on pg. 15)

Having trouble paying your heating bill? LIHEAP could help The chill of winter can be offset with the pleasure of curling up inside a warm home. Turning on the heat and settling into your favorite chair to open a new book or watch a movie feels even better when snow falls or rain patters against the windows. Unfortunately, some families have to choose between paying high winter utility bills and buying groceries or gas for their cars. The necessity of food and transportation often wins. Fortunately, there are assistance programs. One such program, the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), helps low-income households with heating or cooling costs, during an energy-related crisis (such as a shutoff notice from your utility) and with weatherization improvements. If you, a parent or a friend are struggling to make ends meet this winter, LIHEAP and similar programs might be able to help keep your home warm. Apply as soon as you can if you think you'll need assistance. The federal government provides the funding for LIHEAP, but the programs are run at the state level. The money gets dis-

tributed on a first-come-firstserved basis and states give priority to households with children, elderly or disabled members. Often the largest benefits are awarded to the homes with the most need. States open their winter applications at different times, and you should apply for LIHEAP right away if you think you'll have trouble paying for heating. LIHEAP won't cover your entire utility bill, but it can help keep your home warm. LIHEAP's heating benefit is only intended to help you pay to heat your home. For example, if you're heating unit runs on gas, the program will contribute towards your gas bill, but not your electricity bill. You might only be able to receive a benefit once every

12 months, but it can make a big difference for your finances. For the fiscal year 2014, the most recent data available, over 5.7 million households received heating assistance and it offset an average 45.9 percent of recipients' annual heating costs. Qualifying for LIHEAP assistance. States, tribes and territories have some control over the services, qualifications, aid limits and application process for the LIHEAP program in their area. You can review each state's income eligibility for the fiscal year 2017 at https://liheapch.acf.hhs.gov/tables/ POP.htm. The state or local organizations that distribute funds also consider appli-

cants' utility costs, family size and location. Renters and homeowners could be eligible for LIHEAP assistance, but you might not qualify if you have subsidized housing. Being qualified doesn't guarantee that you'll get assistance. Each state receives a set amount of funds for the year, and on average only 20 percent of qualified household receive benefits. How to apply for LIHEAP. Often you'll apply for LIHEAP at a Community Action Agency (CAA), local non-profit organizations that help administer federal, state and local grant programs. Some states let you complete the application online, otherwise you may need to mail, fax or hand in an application. The Office of Community Service's website has contact information for each state and territory, including a link to a website where you'll find state-specific eligibility guidelines and program information. As part of the application process, you may need to share identifying and financial information, including: • Recent utility bills. • Recent pay stubs, or a profit-and-loss statement if

you're self-employed. • Documentation for other income, such as Social Security benefits. • A lease or property tax bill as proof of your address. • Your Social Security number. • A list of people living in your home, their relation to you, dates of birth and incomes. • A copy of a utility termination notice, if you received one. • Your energy provider's information. If you're having trouble with your state's website, or want to help someone who isn't computer savvy, you can call the LIHEAP Clearinghouse's National Energy Assistance Referral (NEAR) at 1-866-674-6327 (TTY: 1-866-367-6228). Bottom line: When the temperature drops, heating costs can quickly rise. You shouldn't have to suffer, and LIHEAP could help provide much-needed financial aid. You can look for additional assistance programs using the Benefits.gov search tool. Also look into state-based programs and payment plans or assistance from your local utility.

recovery time? This will likely depend on the number of teeth you are having pulled, but in most cases, plan for several hours. Anesthesia: To avoid discomfort, you’ll typically undergo either local or general anesthesia during the procedure. If you undergo general anesthesia, you’ll need to have someone accompany you, as the treatment can make you groggy and impair your ability to drive yourself home. Meanwhile, there are some occasions when wisdom teeth removal is just a waste of time and money. You can consider keeping your wisdom teeth for the rest of your life if: • Your teeth have grown in completely and line up well with the rest of your teeth. • You don’t have an under bite, an overbite, or difficulty chewing with your wisdom teeth. • You’re able to thoroughly clean your wisdom teeth and the surrounding teeth. • Your wisdom teeth are not causing damage to surrounding teeth. • Your x-rays show that all is well with your teeth. Consult your dentist to learn which option is best for you.
