America's Black Holocaust Museum officially reopens

On Friday, February 25, 2022, America's Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM) officially reopened its doors with a ribbon cutting celebration at its new home in the The Griot, 401 W. North Ave. America's Black Holocaust Museum is reemerging in Milwaukee's historic Bronzeville neighborhood more than a decade after it was forced to close. In 2008, two years after the death of its founder, Dr. James Cameron, and the onset of the recession, the museum lost funding and subsequently its housing on 4th St. and North Ave. A foundation was created in 2012 to continue his legacy and vision. In 2012, the foundation re-opened ABHM as a 3,200+ page virtual museum available on their website. In 2016, the Foundation announced plans to move the physical museum to a new location at the site of its original, with a planned 2019 re-opening put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following an anonymous $10M donation in late 2021, the museum re-opened in February 2022. Pictured at the ribbon cutting are ABHM Executive Consultant Brad Pruitt; Dr. James Cameron Legacy Foundation Board Secretary and Dr. Cameron's son Virgil Cameron; Maures Development Group President and Founder Melissa N. Goins; ABHM President and CEO Dr. Robert "Bert" M. Davis; and Dr. James Cameron Legacy Foundation Board President Dr. Ralph Hollman.

Biden nominates Ketanji Brown Jackson to be first Black woman to sit on Supreme Court President Joe Biden on Friday, February 25, 2022, nominated federal appeals court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, the first Black woman selected to serve on a court that once declared her race unworthy of citizenship and endorsed American segregation. Introducing Jackson at the White House, Biden declared, “I believe it’s time that we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation.” With his nominee standing alongside, the president praised her as having “a pragmatic understanding that the law must work for the American people.” He said, “She strives to be fair, to get it right, to do justice.” In Jackson, Biden delivered on a campaign promise to make the historic appointment and further diversify a court that was made up entirely of white men for almost two centuries. He also chose an attorney who would be the high court’s first former public defender, though she possesses the elite legal background of other justices as well. Jackson would be the current court’s second Black member — Clarence Thomas, a conservative, is the other — and just the third in history. She would replace liberal Justice Stephen Breyer, 83, who is retiring at the end of the term this summer, so she won’t change the court’s 6-3 conservative majority. Jackson would join the court as it weighs cutbacks to abortion rights and will be considering ending affirmative action in college admissions and restricting voting rights efforts to increase minority representation. She would be only the sixth woman to serve on the court, but she would join three others already there, including the first Latina, Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In brief remarks, Jackson thanked Biden, saying she was “humbled by the extraordinary honor of this nomination.” She highlighted her family’s first-hand experience with the entirety of the legal system, as judges and lawyers, an uncle who was Miami’s police chief and another who was imprisoned on drug charges. She also spoke of the historic nature of her nomination, noting she shared a birthday with Constance Baker Motley, the first Black woman to be confirmed to the federal bench. “If I’m fortunate enough to be confirmed as the next associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, I can only hope that my life and career, my love of this country and the Constitution, and my commitAn HTGroup, LLC Publication

ity Leader Chuck Schumer said, “With her exceptional qualifications and record of evenhandedness, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will be a justice who will uphold the Constitution and protect the rights of all Americans, including the voiceless and vulnerable.”

ment to upholding the rule of law and the sacred principles upon which this great nation was founded, will inspire future generations of Americans,” she said. Jackson, 51, once worked as one of Breyer’s law clerks early in her legal career. She attended Harvard as an undergraduate and for law school, and served on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, the agency that develops federal sentencing policy, before becoming a federal judge in 2013. Her nomination is subject to confirmation by the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority by a razor-thin 50-50 margin with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaker. Party leaders have promised swift but deliberate consideration. Friday’s ceremony was attended only by White House staff, Jackson’s family and news media, in part because the Senate is out of session this week. Everyone wore masks because of the pandemic, Biden and Jackson removing theirs to speak. He bent to pull out a lectern step for her to stand on as she made her remarks. Her introduction came two years to the day after Biden, then struggling to capture the Democratic presidential nomination, pledged in a South Carolina debate to nominate a Black woman if presented with a vacancy. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin said in a statement that the panel will “begin immediately” to move forward on consideration of an “extraordinary nominee.” Senators have set a tentative goal of confirmation by April 8, when they leave for a twoweek spring recess. Hearings could start as soon as midMarch. That timeline could be complicated by a number of things, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the extended absence of Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, who suffered a stroke last month and is out for several weeks. Democrats would need Lujan’s vote to confirm Biden’s pick if no Republicans support her. Once the nomination is sent to the Senate, it is up to

the Senate Judiciary Committee to vet the nominee and hold confirmation hearings. After the committee approves a nomination, it goes to the Senate floor for a final vote. Biden and Senate Democrats are hoping for a bipartisan vote on the nomination, but it’s unclear if they will be able to win over any GOP senators after bitterly partisan confirmation battles under President Donald Trump. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of three Republicans who voted to confirm Jackson to the appeals court last year, had pushed Biden to nominate a different candidate from his home state, Judge J. Michelle Childs, who also was favored by home-state Rep. James Clyburn, a Biden ally. Graham said earlier this month his vote would be “very problematic” if it were anyone else, and he expressed disappointment in a tweet Friday. Previewing a likely Republican attack line, he and several others on the right said Biden was going with the choice of the “radical left.” Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said he looked forward to meeting with Jackson and “studying her record, legal views and judicial philosophy.” But he noted he had voted against her a year ago. Biden has said he was interested in selecting a nominee in the mold of Breyer who could be a persuasive force with fellow justices. Although Breyer’s votes tended to put him to the left of center on an increasingly conservative court, he frequently saw the gray in situations that colleagues were more likely to find black or white. “Justice Breyer — the members of the Senate will decide if I fill your seat,” Jackson said Friday, praising the retiring justice’s “civility, grace, pragmatism and generosity of spirit. “But please know that I could never fill your shoes,” she said. Democratic Senate Major-

As part of his search process, Biden, a longtime chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also interviewed Childs and California Supreme Court Judge Leondra Kruger, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, saying all three interviews took place on Feb. 14. As part of his process, Biden also consulted with a range of legal experts and lawmakers in both parties and delved deeply into the finalists’ legal writings. Biden called Jackson late Thursday to inform her that she was his choice, Psaki said, and he informed Democratic congressional leaders Friday morning. Jackson serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a position that Biden elevated her to last year from her previous job as a federal trial court judge. Three current justices — Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh and John Roberts, the chief justice — previously served on the same appeals court.

In one of Jackson’s most high-profile decisions, as a trial court judge she ordered former White House Counsel Don McGahn to appear before Congress. That was a setback to Trump’s efforts to keep his top aides from testifying. The case was appealed, and a deal was ultimately reached for McGahn’s testimony. As an appeals court judge, she was part of a three-judge panel that ruled in December against Trump’s effort to shield documents from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Jackson was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Miami. She has said that her parents, Johnny and Ellery Brown, chose her name to express their pride in her family’s African ancestry. They asked an aunt who was in the Peace Corps in Africa at the time to send a list of African girls’ names and they picked Ketanji Onyika, which they were told meant “lovely one.”

Jackson traces her interest in the law to when she was in preschool and her father was in law school and they would sit together at the dining room table, she with coloring books and he with law books. Her father became an attorney for the county school board and her mother was a high school principal. Jackson was confirmed to A brother, nine years youngthat post on a 53-44 Senate er, served in the Army, invote, winning the backing of cluding in Iraq, and is now a three Republicans: Graham, lawyer, too. Maine’s Susan Collins and Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski.

Stand for Democracy! Stand with Ukraine!

by Dr. Darrell L. Williams, U.S. Senate Candidate As the fight for democracy is upon us, we must stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine here in the United States and those who are fighting abroad. Being a purple heart recipient and serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, I have seen conflict up close and I personally know the horrors of war. But after years at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, political in-fighting, and strained relations with allies and other countries, we cannot afford for the United States to appear vulnerable. As a person who has served in combat, I know the pain, concern and hope that comes with each passing day. However, as a nation, while we continue diplomatic efforts, we must re-build and bridge relationships to promote long-term peace. While we may pray and work for peace, we must be prepared to defend our national interests throughout the world and our borders at all cost. We must also support often paid for with the blood those who supported us and and sacrifice of many brave our NATO allies in support men and women. of Ukraine. MESSAGES

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude."

Beloved, these women suffrage pioneers, marginalized, humiliated and fighting a dual oppression, were often dismissed for being black and female; yet they sacrificially gave their all to the women’s suffrage movement. Women have come a long way. Today women are owners of their own companies, CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies, doctors, scientists, astronauts, lawyers, professors, journalists, teachers, pastors, etc., and hold in their hands influence, power and opportunity which they are using to open doors formerly closed by others. We owe it to the legacy of women suffragists to continue to educate ourselves, our children and grandchildren of the contri-

butions made by men and women to African American history and its importance in the American story, not just during the month of February, but all during the year.

Getting to know the organizations and individuals helping make our community better The city council in Manitowoc, WI recently accepted an offer from Milwaukee-based Wire Capital Group, LLC to construct a $16 million “workforce” or affordable housing complex at the former Mirro cookware manufacturing location in the 1500 block of Washington Street. Plans call for a 59-unit building with a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and townhouses, according to Dave Juniel, president of Wire Capital Group.

Serving Older and Younger Adults Nurses Affecting Change: It’s Who We Are and What We Do

The promotion of public health and public well-being are the stated goals of most health care organizations, but few organizations model these goals as sincerely as Nurses Affecting Change. While breast cancer incidence rates of Black and White women are similar, death rates from breast cancer are higher among Black women compared to White women. For the past two years, even during the pandemic, Nurses Affecting Change has quietly and diligently continued their commitment to do all that they can to reduce breast cancer mortality among and breast cancer screening. Black women in Southeastern We also gave them personal care products, gift cards, and Wisconsin. information about where they could get mammograms.

“In 2010, after working in the community with Dr. Sandra Underwood from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee (UWM) College of Nursing and Julie Griffie from Froedtert Hospital Breast Center and providing education to our women about breast health and the importance of breast cancer screening, I felt the need to do even more. “Many of our women told us that they had heard a lot about breast cancer and the importance of screening, yet, many of them had not been screened because they did not really understand how important it was for them,” said Bonnie Anderson, a nurse with Milwaukee Catholic Homes and program coordinator for Nurses Affecting Change. Anderson said that some of the women shared that fear stopped them from getting screened. Others said that if they had breast cancer they did not want to know. Too many did not realize that screening and early detection of breast cancer are critical to breast cancer control. “After discussing what we were hearing with several nurses in the local community Dr. Underwood, Julie and I started a breast cancer education and screening program. The Isaac Coggs Clinic offered us space to provide the education and screening. We provided women with literature designed specifically for Black women about the importance of breast health www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

“Our initial outreach efforts were extremely successful, so we sought funding to expand this initiative. Thanks to support we have received from the State of Wisconsin’s Well Women’s Program we were able to purchase the supplies and materials needed for our mobile breast health education and screening clinic,” said Anderson. Nurses Affecting Change evolved from the commitment of a diverse group of nurses desiring to better serve the community. The nurses and health workers involved in the program have completed specialized training to ensure that they have skills and competencies essential to teach, screen, and serve women in the community. The nurses and health workers have earned the respect of community and health care advocates throughout the city. Gale Johnson, Program Director for Wisconsin Well Women, lauds the efforts of Nurses Affecting Change. “The Wisconsin Well Women Program partners with various organizations throughout the state. We have 72 counties in Wisconsin, so we cannot do everything or be everywhere. When there is an organization already working within the local community doing good things, like Nurses

Affecting Change, it makes sense to put our resources in those communities. The fact that they are working so successfully within the local community is especially important. Nurses Affecting Change are the best. They go everywhere. They are outstanding,” said Johnson. Julia Means, a Parish and Community Health Nurse for Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s, part of Ascension Wisconsin, and one of the coordinators for an annual women’s program at Ebenezer Church of God in Christ echoes Johnson’s praise about Nurses

Affecting Change. “I am a nurse, but breast cancer is not my specialty. When my church was planning their annual Women Supporting Women Mammogram Coach Day, I reached out to Bonnie and asked if her team would host the clinical breast exams. Nurses Affecting Change did the breast exams and provided women with gift bags that included personal care products, breast health reminders, and information and resources about breast cancer. They also set up exam rooms which enabled the nurses to quickly serve the women. They are a wonderful team. They give off such positive energy and show great patience working

with the women. I really appreciate the attitude they take with the women because no matter what age or level the women are on, they are able to relate to them,” said Means. Since the pandemic, Anderson admits that their activity has been curtailed, but not stopped completely. Anderson notes that during the last two years the 15 nurses who remain actively involved in the initiative have provided breast health education, clinical examinations, and mammography screening support to about 2,700 women.

“Our goal is to provide breast health education, breast cancer screening and support to underserved women and women in need. We set up our mobile clinic and provide breast health education and screening at community sites such as housing complexes, homeless shelters, community centers, churches, ethnic markets, or other congregant sites. We reach out to our women wherever they are. Our goal is to reduce breast cancer mortality among our Black women. During the pandemic, we have not stopped. Every Saturday we go someplace. “Yes, fear continues to be a commonly expressed concern of our women.

When our nurses and community workers encounter women who are fearful, they send them to me because I am a longterm breast cancer survivor. I personally work with them and let them know and see that early detection can lead to a positive outcome,” said Anderson. Nurses Affecting Change’s goal is to help women as soon as possible in whatever way is needed. If needed, they will accompany them to the doctor and follow up with them to encourage them along the journey. When asked to elaborate even further about the group and the group’s activities Anderson replied, “Nurses Affecting Change is our name and it is also our mission. Nurses Affecting Change— it is who we are. It is what we do,” said Anderson. For more information about Nurses Affecting Change or to schedule a program, interested individuals can call Anderson at (414) 745-4684.

ALL ABOUT SCIENCE & RESEARCH WITH ALL OF US

From Dr. No to Dr. Know: The Importance of Community Scientists

Every time we speak with the team from the University of Wisconsin – Madison All of Us Research team at the Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships in Milwaukee, they tell us how researchers need our help to change the future of medicine. The program is inviting at least one million people across the U.S. to help build one of the most diverse health databases in history. They welcome participants from all backgrounds, and researchers will use the data to learn how our biology, lifestyle and environment affect health. This can help researchers find ways to treat and prevent disease. One thing the Milwaukee team wants to do is to leave something for the community by building community scientists. You have read here how the team is creating cohorts or affinity groups to come together to use what they learn about their personal health to impact the future of health. Recently, the team was featured in a webinar presented by the Network of the National Library of Medicine and SciStarter, an organization committed to citizen science and enabling people from all walks of life to advance scientific research. We talked to the team about that discussion and asked them the same questions. Milwaukee Times: What makes your approach to community outreach unique? Vivian King, UW All of Us Milwaukee Communications Advisor: As you know, our work with the All of Us Research Program is through the University of Wisconsin – Madison where we are one university. Two sites. In Milwaukee, our role is to specifically engage underrepresented communities through the Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships in Milwaukee. At our center, the community is at the heart of everything we do. We utilize an Asset Based Community Development model that An HTGroup, LLC Publication

looks at the strengths and assets of the communities we serve, from businesses and schools to churches and organizations, down to the talents and skills of individuals within the community. We believe our communities have everything they need to find solutions to any problems they have or issues that arise. That model is now a national model that was honed and championed by our courageous leader, Gina Green-Harris, the director of the center and co-investigator of the UW All of Us Research Program.

me. When we first started this work, we set up tables and engaged with people at different events to encourage people to learn about the All of Us Program. Of course, the pandemic halted that. In my research to find information to bring to the community, I came across a video produced by playwright Garrett Davis. It was about men, stress, and mental health in the African American community, and it used comedy to address these serious topics. I was literally in the barbershop and ran into a friend I used to play basketball with who is a pastor now. I told him about the video and asked if he knew a group of men who might want to get together and see it. We ran into two other friends in the shop who were interested, and we picked a day within two weeks, thinking we would get about 15 men. We ended up getting 35 men. We never watched the video that first time. The men got to talking about their issues. We then knew how much this kind of dialogue was truly needed and thought, 'What can we do with these men to get them more empowered around their health?' Now, we are on our fourth session of what we are calling our Men’s Cohort, which will build the health literacy of individuals who have been previously muted.

likely than White adults to report worse treatment in their health care. This results in disruptions, delays to medical care, adverse health consequences and the health disparities that we talk about at the national level. We know this is rooted in very longstanding structures and systems, but it’s important that we not just embrace and expect an education and training about racism and bias, but the main thing is trying to diversify the medical and scientific workforce in the future, so that we ensure in the future that everyone is included. We need the health practitioners, and we need the scientific workforce, and we need the community scientists to reflect everyone who lives here in the future of health. For All of Us it’s part of a new era that researchers, health care providers, technology experts, community partners, the public, everyone works together to develop this individualized health care that helps you get information about how to be healthier. We’re really excited about the diversity of health care in the future, the inclusivity of health care in the future of research.

Milwaukee Times: What has inspired you about this work? Dr. Leslie McAbee, UW All of Us Milwaukee Outreach Coordinator: I’ll take that question. It’s the privilege of getting to learn from and collaborate with incredible community leaders and grassroots efforts and organizations in our city. I’m a transplant originally from Georgia and most recently from Tennessee and being able to – in a very short time – meet very talented, passionate people who take their personal and sometimes negative experiences to positively impact the community is inspiring. Like Sandy Smith, a domestic violence survivor, created Survivors Journey to Peace to help women. She, in turn, connected us to Rochelle Parker who is bringing a lot of attention in the African American community to fibroids and how they impact women. This network really does organically grow, and the work being done by the community inspires me to work even harder. Milwaukee Times: What has surprised you about this work? Dr. Bashir Easter, UW All of Us Milwaukee Assistant Director: Dr. McAbee mentioned how the network really does organically grow, and that’s what has happened with our Men’s Cohort, and that is what has surprised

Milwaukee Times: What do you think the future of healthcare should look like? Mirtha Sosa-Pacheco, UW All of Us Milwaukee Program Manager: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has done a series of surveys with the Harvard School of Public Health and other entities. One topic they covered a few years ago looked at the perceptions and experiences of people across the country when they go in for health care or apply for assistance. Researchers say unfair treatment and judgment based on race or ethnicity occurs across multiple settings and that Black and Hispanic adults are more

Robert Jackson Robert Jackson, Raising the Bar, Inc. Founder, Community Partner of All of Us: I do love the approach of the All of Us Program and even talking to Dr. Bashir in our men’s group. We are not forcing anybody. We are presenting information and we are allowing them to understand the importance of it when you put it on the table. I think that when you have that approach, it doesn’t seem like you’re trying to force anybody. A lot of times when you are forcing people, it gets them a little nervous. Even with the vaccine, people get nervous when you are saying that they have to do something. We take the approach that we’re not forcing you, we’re presenting information. We’re a part of the program, but then we kind of give them that free will. Eventually people start to want to learn more about their body and then they start to want to participate in the program.

Our family’s decision? Stepping up her safety.

Because COVID-19 can be serious for kids, too. Getting COVID-19 can have real consequences for a child’s health, from a hospital stay to living with “long COVID” symptoms. Taking simple steps as a family—like wearing a mask in class or getting kids the free COVID-19 vaccine for ages 5 and up—can help kids stay safe and in school.
