Milwaukee to host 2020 Democratic National Convention The Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced Monday, March 11, 2019 that Milwaukee, WI, will host the Democratic National Convention on July 13-16, 2020. This is the first time the Democratic Party has held a national convention in the Midwest outside of Chicago since 1916. After a decade of Republican attacks on working people, labor unions, and communities of color, Democrats saw some of their biggest and most historic gains last year in Wisconsin with the election of Governor Tony Evers, Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, and Attorney General Josh Kaul, and the reelection of Senator Tammy Baldwin. Monday’s announcement signals that the party is doubling down on its winning strategy in this

critical battleground state. “If we’re going to take back the White House, restore the guard rails of our democracy, and make government work for American families, we need to earn it,” said DNC Chair Tom Perez. “We need to fight alongside our brothers and sisters in labor to build a brighter future together, and empower the diversity of our party and country. This choice is a statement of our values, and I'm thrilled Milwaukee will host the 2020 Democratic National Convention. The Democratic Party is the party of working people, and Milwaukee is a city of working people. We saw in this last election what we can accomplish when we come together, invest, and fight for working people, and that was proven right here in Wisconsin. I

want to thank the leaders in Houston and Miami for all their hard work throughout this process. They both put forward competitive proposals that I’m sure will lead them to hosting future conventions.” “This is a great day for the city of Milwaukee and for the state of Wisconsin,” said

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “Milwaukee is a firstclass city, and we are ready to showcase Milwaukee on one of the largest stages in the world.” The site selection process was led by Jess O’Connell and consisted of a Technical Advisory Group, which included seasoned veterans

who have worked several cycles of conventions and are experts in the areas of housing, transportation, infrastructure, security, accessibility, and arena and production logistics. These experts spent at least six months traveling to Milwaukee, Miami and Houston to see what each city had to offer. The RFP process was led by Leah Daughtry, which consisted of reviewing bids and determining the three finalists for this process. The Milwaukee bid committee included Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Governor Tony Evers, Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, Congresswoman Gwen Moore and Milwaukee Bucks Senior Vice President Alex Lasry.

The beauty of it rehash old slights, then life Frank James IV © 2019 will allow them to live out beingfrankwithfrank@ their days doing this. gmail.com When we look at life with a mentally free aspect it is beautiful. When we understand that where we are in life is a creation of our own, then life becomes extremely beautiful. The key to the beauty of life is choice. What choice are you making to enjoy the beauty of life?

There are many things a person can complain about in life. Many people have issues with their occupations. Other people will have a gripe about the society they were born into, or even the era. Through all of the complaining, we should never forget the beauty of life. Your life is special and priceless; after all, what would you do without it? Many people in the world seem to forget that life is beautiful. The reason many people forget about the beauty of life is the ego trip that locks them into a negative outlook. These are the people who seem to thrive in what can only be termed as misery. Even with this misery addiction these people should be thankful that life will allow them the misery they crave. Isn’t that a beautiful thing? The beauty to live, create or follow a plan for your life is what makes this wonderful.

One can moan, complain to their heart's desire and life will give them what they need to keep them moaning. A person can choose to live carefree without stress and life will let them. Anything you want is there for the taking in this life and that is the beauty of it. One thing many people equate with happiness is money. Money will bring stuff and certain people into your life. Never think that money equals happiness. Another beautiful aspect of life is that it will allow a person to believe money equals happiness and let them live accordingly. This person may never achieve the money status they want but life will let them go to their grave believing money to be happiness. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has heard this saying. This statement should be applied to life. Many people spend so

much time in other people’s lives that they never understand the statement. I cannot judge or say the status of another person’s life because it is theirs. If I agree that one sees beauty to their specifications then I understand the same thing about life. What may seem an ugly life to me may be seen as a beautiful life to another. In reality the only person who needs to see a life in any judgment form is the person living the life in question. Often people miss out on the beauty of life because they are too busy living in the past. Past slights and missed opportunities keep many from going forward in the now. The beauty of life is the fact that every second is a chance to break free from the situation you are in. If you can’t get out physically, then mentally is always an option. Another beautiful aspect of life is if a person wants to live in the past and

The loneliness epidemic (Week 3)

“If your life is empty, fill it with Christ.” - Woodrow Kroll The subject of loneliness was once a relatively ignored subject; now in recent years, this subject has clearly become one of the most important subjects of interest and concern in our society today. This week, let’s look at tips on how to overcome loneliness by looking briefly tivity that you enjoy. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” - 2 Tim. 4:6-8 The Apostle Paul was a great advocate for the cause of Christ, yet he knew loneliness. Paul talked about being deserted by his ministry

companions and even during his first appearance before the Roman court, Paul said: “no man stood with me, but all men forsook me…” (2 Tim. 4:16). Just like you and me, Paul was human and experienced the pain and discomfort of loneliness and the feelings of being deserted by everyone. Yet, even in his loneliness, Paul found strength in his faith in God. How did Paul handle loneliness, first… Paul kept his eyes on God. Paul had been imprisoned by the Romans awaiting a hearing before the Roman Emperor. Even during his imprisonment, Paul kept his eyes on God. Paul’s ultimate goal was to finish the race that God had called for him to complete. When you are experiencing loneliness, keep your eyes on God, allowing God’s strength and love to comfort you. Beloved, Paul’s life was a testimony to the power of

God which is at work even in our lives today. Paul’s letter to Timothy shows us how God’s strength is made perfect even in our weakness. (2 Cor. 12:9). Next week, we will look at other ways Paul handled loneliness. Next Week: Continuation General Disclaimer: The writer has used her best efforts in preparation of this information. Judge Jones' six months on the bench By Judge Andrew Jones

wards of fifty). Typical court hearings range from status or scheduling conferences to bail hearings, motion hearings, pleas, sentencings, and trials. We hold jury trials two weeks out of every month, with as many as four cases being tried to verdict during those two weeks.

I have now had the privilege of serving as the judge in Branch 40 of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court for six months. During that time, I have been assigned to the Court’s criminal division, with a general misdemeanor calendar. Most importantly, I see the critical need to ensure that the law is applied fairly and equally to all parties who come before me. I left my practice to join the bench after twenty-four years of serving clients in both the public and private sectors because I wanted the challenge of serving the residents of Milwaukee County in a way that makes these ideals a reality. I was raised by two long-time public servants to value such service, and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to contribute to our legal system and to our community in this way. Local sisters celebrate 83rd birthday together

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

Flora Rieves and Lola Neely (insert) celebrated their 83rd birthday with family members and friends this past summer. These ladies are formerly from Shreveport, Louisiana. The birthday celebration was held at the home of the late Arthur Tyler and Addie Tyler located on First and Center Street. Rieves and Neely have been upstanding community contributors and residents for many years. The celebration menu consisted of fried chicken, fried fish, barbecue ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, cakes and ice cream. This event was attended by nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and many relatives from as far away as Atlanta, Georgia. These ladies are giant pillars in our community and we wish them many more birthdays.

To My Dear Mother I Never Saw Your Wings How is it that I never saw your wings when you were here with me? When you closed your eyes and soared to the Heavens, I could hear the faint flutter of your wings as you left. Your body no longer on this side, Your spirit here eternally, I see your halo shine. I close my eyes and see the multicolored wings surround me in my saddest moments and my happiest times. Mother, my angel, God has given you your assignment – always my mother, forever my angel. You fly into my dreams and when I am asleep I feel your wings brush against my face, wiping away the tears I shed, since I can no longer hold you in my arms, but in my heart. You earned those wings dear mother, and you will always be my angel eternal.

Perhaps you sent a lovely card, Or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral piece; If so, we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words That any friend could say. Perhaps you were not there at all, Just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console our hearts, We thank you so much whatever the part.

Bradley Tech High School receives grant to support aviation careers MPS’ Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, and Milwaukee Area Technical College have been selected to receive a portion of a $1 million Southwest Airlines Charitable Grant that focuses on building a stronger workforce of tomorrow. The grant will fund the Expanding Milwaukee's Aviation Pipeline project. The Texas-based airline is supporting two dozen nonprofit organizations across the country which are, in turn, strengthening their communities through K–12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education; building a resilient workforce; and de-

veloping future leaders. The Expanding Milwaukee's Aviation Pipeline project is a strategic partnership between the GMC, MATC, and Bradley Tech High School. The partners will work to align existing programs and expand enrollment in MATC's aviation program to increase the number of workforce-ready candidates. The collaborative will result in a pipeline for MATC’s Aviation Technician program, starting with outreach activities at Bradley Tech, the premier technology and trade high school in Milwaukee. Bradley Tech educates more than 900 students and currently partners with MATC to offer college credit classes

Six ways to detox your body naturally Many people associate detox diets and cleansing plans with juices, smoothies, and other strange concoctions that claim to rid the body of unhealthy substances and promote rapid weight loss. Those who follow detox plans also tout psychological benefits, such as more energy and rejuvenation. There are also colon cleanses and liver detox plans that claim to target the colon and liver. But there is no scientific evidence that one specific organ can help you to detoxify completely. Detoxification requires a team effort from your entire organ system. Your body’s detoxification system There are five organ systems (skin, kidney, intestine, lymphatic, and liver) that work day and night to metabolize fat, fight inflammation, and remove harmful toxins from your body and filter out built-up waste. • Your skin helps you detox by providing a barrier to harmful toxins. The skin regulates body temperature and provides antibacterial protection against infection. • The kidney activates hormones and filters your blood to collect waste that is excreted in your urine. Your kidney also filters out fat producing substances and balances your blood pressure.

• Your intestine allows essential nutrients from food into your body but helps detox by keeping harmful bacteria and other toxins out. The intestine also excretes waste materials and toxins from the body. • The lymphatic system carries toxins from the body to the blood for excretion by the bladder, bowels, and skin. The lymphatic system also reduces cellulite formation and strengthens your immune system. • Your liver is a second waste filter that manufacturers essential hormones. The liver also isolates the toxins that your body can’t break down, cleanses the blood and balances fat and cholesterol levels, and breaks down harmful chemicals. A natural detox diet You don’t need exotic detoxes or cleanses to purify your body and promote weight loss. Adopting a healthy lifestyle with lots of whole food, fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs, and spices can invigorate, strengthen and support your body’s natural detoxification system. On the other hand, highly processed foods loaded with artificial ingredients, such as preservatives and additives can add more toxins to your body. Traditional diets tend to be

healthier than the standard American diet. Oldwayspt. org created The African Heritage Diet based on the healthy food traditions of people with African roots. This healthy way of eating is powerfully nutritious and can naturally strengthen and support your body’s natural detoxification system. The following lifestyle changes suggested by Oldways can help you drop those extra pounds and detox your body naturally. Boost flavor with spice. Curries, peppers, coconut, fresh herbs, garlic, onions, fresh lemon, and all spices

are low-sodium ways to add incredible flavors to grains, beans, vegetables, and seafood. Make vegetables the star of your plate. Steamed, sautéed, roasted, grilled or raw, enjoy veggies like okra, cabbage, green beans, or eggplant in larger portions than the other parts of your meal. If you’re grabbing seconds, go for the veggies! Change the way you think about meat. Use lean, healthy meats in smaller amounts for flavor. Replace ham-hocks with smoked turkey or fish, or pile on the herbs and spices instead! Make rice and beans your new staple. Fiber filled rice and beans is a favorite meal all over the world. Add African heritage whole grains like millet, sorghum, and teff to

your soups, or partner them with peas. Enjoy mashes and medleys. Bake or boil sweet potatoes, yams, and potatoes or mash them with eggplants, beans, grains, onions, and seasonings. Find real foods everywhere. At a corner store, buy peanuts or fruit; at a lunch buffet, load up your plate with salad, veggies, fruit, and beans. Look to African heritage whole foods, in their natural state, to crowd out processed and packaged “convenience foods.” Jazz up fruits for dessert. Fresh or frozen fruits like melons, peaches, berries, and mangos—plain or sprinkled with chopped nuts or coconut—add a sweet taste of satisfaction at the end of a meal. Drink to your health. A splash of flavor can make water your go-to drink. Add crushed fruits or small amounts of 100% fruit juice to water or sparkling water to make refreshing “ades” (like lemonade). Iced tea with a little raw honey is another refreshing alternative to soda and other highly sugared drinks. Try any one of these steps…and then another… and another until you’ve mastered them all. A healthy diet filled with whole foods, herbs and spices is the best way to detox your body naturally.

And projections say there will be 3.7 million centenarians in 2050. One very special Milwaukee-area woman who has reached 100 is Emma Waite. A former nursing assistant at St. Francis Hospital, she now lives at a Milwaukee-area assisted living apartment facility. She attributes her longevity to three things: Good diet – “I never drank - except communion wine or smoked. And I love good, home-baked food. My mother loved to cook, and I loved to eat it.” Keeping active – “I look forward to summertime walks and going out on the deck for cookouts and to water the plants. I do arts and crafts, too. I used to knit and sew and made all my children’s clothes.” She also played guitar and ukulele when she was younger. Enjoying every day – “It’s important to be happy and have someone who loves you.” Emma knows what she’s talking about; she was mar-

aid paperwork.,” said Edna Spears, Emma’s Care Manager with My Choice Family Care. “We’re so happy to see people like Emma live long lives when they have the support they need.” Emma’s son Steve checks in almost every day, and although she lives in Eden, Wisconsin, her daughter Carol keeps her entertained with stories about her children and grandchildren.

Emma’s advice for others who want to live to be 100? It’s simple: “Enjoy every day.” My Choice Family Care is a sponsor of Super Senior Friday, an annual free event to connect seniors to resources, including health screenings. It takes place Friday, March 15, from 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. at the Clinton Rose Senior Center, 3045 N Dr Martin Luther King Drive.

Wisconsin African American Women’s Center Mrs. Emma Waite with her son, Steven. ried for more than 50 years to her husband, Gaylord. Together they weathered plenty of storms, including the famous blizzard of ’47, when Emma went into labor. She had to take the bus to the hospital earlier in the day, and Gaylord planned to join her as soon as he could, waiting on the corner for another bus to come along. When the police told him all buses had been cancelled, they gave him a ride in the squad and slowly made their way through town. Though he missed the birth, Gaylord was a good father, first to Steve and later to daughter Carol, Emma said.

After Gaylord passed away in 1992, Emma lived alone in an apartment for several years. Today she maintains her independence at Cornerstone, thanks to their attentive staff and help from My Choice Family Care. That’s the managed care organization that oversees Emma and the care of 8,700 Wisconsin residents (including 36 other centenarians) in 27 counties. “We cover the room and board for Emma and make sure the facility provides meals, housekeeping and medication. Celebrating

Women's History Month A historic election in Chicago cracks the machine

The old guard is on the way out, and a progressive future for the city is coming into focus. Chicago’s population has decreased by about a quarter-million Black residents since 2000, with Latinos passing African Americans as the city’s second-largest demographic. So it was notable that on Chicago’s mayoral ballot February 26, six of the 14 candidates were Black. Two Black women, Toni Preckwinkle and Lori Lightfoot, finished at the top and will face a runoff April 2. A number of progressive challengers ran for City Council—many of them people of color—and took down incumbent aldermen or made it to runoffs. The results say a lot about a growth in race and class consciousness and a hunger for change in Chicago after eight years under Mayor Rahm Emanuel, dubbed “Mayor 1%.” This election could be seen as a rejection of Chicago’s once all-powerful Democratic machine, a vast system of political patronage; of the Daley dynasty, with the loss of mayoral candidate Bill Daley (son of Mayor Richard J. Daley and brother of Mayor Richard M. Daley, who served a combined 43 years); of a Council in lockstep with the mayor;

and of Emanuel’s autocratic, corporate style of governance. Bill Daley came in third despite his $8.65 million in campaign funds, almost double the next candidate’s. Many see Lightfoot and Preckwinkle as representing reform, social justice and more diverse leadership. Emanuel was long criticized for focusing on Chicago’s wealthy neighborhoods and power players while ignoring or undermining poor and working-class Black and Latino neighborhoods. His record includes the closing of almost 50 public schools, the shuttering of public mental health clinics, the slashing of city jobs that were long a staple for Black communi-

ties and the layoffs of public school teachers, with Black and Latino teachers disproportionately given the ax. Emanuel’s problems were only exacerbated by the revelation that his administration covered up the police murder of Black teen Laquan McDonald, and Emanuel announced in fall 2018 that he would not seek re-election. Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor appointed by Emanuel to oversee a police reform process after McDonald’s death, was an outspoken critic of Emanuel. She is seen by many, including residents of the largely white North Side, as an uncompromising good-government advocate and reformer, though many activists have

concerns about her ties to law enforcement and say she should have been more proactive while heading Chicago’s police oversight body. If Lightfoot wins, she would be Chicago’s first openly gay mayor. Jobs, along with police accountability and gun violence, emerged as key issues and flashpoints for anger over the segregation and inequality that have long festered in Chicago. Nearly all the candidates took relatively progressive stances on criminal justice and policing, and nearly all called for the legalization of marijuana, an overhaul of the police force and a halt to Emanuel’s planned $95 million police training academy.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly

If Lightfoot wins the election April 2, she will be the mayor of Chicago. Preckwinkle will remain head of the County Board. Kim Foxx will be the Cook County state's attorney. Dr. Janice Jackson will be CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Dorothy Brown will be the elected clerk of the Cook County courts, and Karen Yarbough will be the elected county clerk. Additionally, Robin Kelly is the U.S. Congresswoman for the South Side and suburban 2nd Districe, and Juliana Stratton is the lieutenant governor of Illinois. They are all African American women. Think how impossible that all would have seemed 40 years ago.

Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, girls were expected to help prepare supper for the family. My Mom was a great cook and a very religious woman. She took pride in preparing meals for the family, special events and church activities. She was always called on to prepare a dish for a family member or a friend. She never charged a dime. Cooking was her ministry. To this day, people walk up to me and asked the question: Can you cook like your mother? To be a great cook, you sort of have to be a scientist. When baking a cake or preparing a meal, Mom never measured anything. She eyeballed all her ingredients. In the following four weeks, I will share recipes from my personal cookbook I have created in honor of my Mom, Beulah.

Women's History Month Women’s History Month: Women of color whose names you should know Part One of Two: These leaders — Black, Latina, Asian, Arab, Native American — in varied fields, broke both gender and racial barriers as they made history. Here is a by-no-means-comprehensive primer recognizing 36 women of color, past and present: Peggy Alexander and Diane Nash Peggy Alexander and Diane Nash participated at lunch counter sit-ins during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and were some of the first African Americans served lunch at a previously all-white counter, along with Matthew Walker and Stanley Hemphill. Charlotte Hawkins Brown Charlotte Hawkins Brown was born next door to a plantation in Henderson, N.C., but moved to Cambridge, Mass., as a young girl. Her mother made sure that Brown received a good education, and a chance encounter with Alice Freeman Palmer, president of Wellesley College, resulted in her

having an influential mentor. Brown eventually returned to North Carolina to open the innovative Palmer Memorial Institute, a prep school for African American children. More than 1,000 students graduated from the Institute in Brown’s 50-year presidency. She also spoke out against Jim Crow laws. She was targeted by the FBI, making its 10 Most Wanted List, and later imprisoned but then acquitted on murder and kidnapping charges in association with a courtroom attack during the trial of the Soledad Brothers, three African American inmates charged with the murder of a white prison guard. She has been a professor and author and today focuses on battling the “industrial prison complex” in the U.S. as well as the role of black women and the rise of intersectionality in feminism. Celebrating Black women writers: Toni Morrison

As we continue to feature African American female writers, this week we showcase Toni Morrison. Morrison is one of most beloved female writers in American history. She has exceptional creative energy for examining the life of African American women and the black experience. I have a few of her books in my home library. Here are a few books; I would like to recommend. Beloved, The Bluest Eye, Sula, Tar Baby, Song of Solomon and my favorite, Love. Toni Morrison is the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. She is best known for her novels focusing on intimate relationships, especially between men and women. These stories are set against the backdrop of African American culture. Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Lorain, Ohio, on February 18, 1931. She was the second of four children born to Ramah and George Wofford. Her mother's parents, Ardelia and John Solomon Willis, had left Greenville, Alabama, around 1910 after they lost their farm because of debts that they could not repay. Morrison's father's family left Georgia and moved north to escape sharecropping (a system of farming in which a farmer works on someone else's land and pays the owner a share of the crop) and violence against African Americans in the South. Both families settled in the steel-mill town of Lorain on Lake Erie. Morrison grew up during the Great Depression in the 1930s, a time of severe economic hardship. Her father supported the family by working three jobs for seventeen years.

She has said that she uses her childhood memories to help her start writing. Her real-life world, therefore, is often included in her novels.
