Where to find help for those in need during the COVID-19 closures

The coronavirus has shut down many of our community instations and centers to help stop its spread. However, there are still many in this community that need help with finding work or just putting food on the table. Many are wondering with so many closures, where will they turn to now for help. Well, the good news is that there are still many places offering assistance. However, many of the hours, locations, and even how it is distributed has changed. Here is a list of some of the organizations that are still providing help to those in need. Food Stamps and WIC Currently, both WIC and the food stamps program are still providing benefits during the coronavirus crisis. Also new enrollees are still being processed. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee While all the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee have suspended operation due to COVID-19, the meal continuation plan is is being executed at the following Club locations. Vivent Health Vivent Health food pantries will be closed for the remainder of this week. The food pantries will reopen the week of March 23, providing orders to patients via home delivery and pick-up. If you need food, please contact your local Vivent Health location for further instructions. The Milwaukee downtown office can be reached at (414) 223-6800 or (800) 359-9272. Local churches While many local churches are closing their doors due to the outbreak, many are still providing food pantry services for families in need. However, they may have altered hours, require an appointment, or even deliver. Please contact your church's food pantry for details and

availability.

The United Way United Way has a COVID-19 Community Economic Relief Fund. They will help with bill, rent and food. Call 1-866-211-9966 and provide your zip code, so they can connect you with local agencies to help you. The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County While many of the Salvation Army's local services have closed their food banks are still open at the Milwaukee Citadel Corps and the Oak Creek food pantry will be open as well as all offices for emergancy service only. Helping out Many of the programs listed run on donations of food and money. If you are able to help out with either please do. Due to the outbreak many people will need meal services during the crisis and even more will need help after the crisis due to outbreak related layoffs. Please visit the organizations website or call their offices for more information on making donations of food or money.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Spring into a healthy spiritual lifestyle (Week 2) “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God…” - Psalm 42:1-2a If you were to visit most exercise gyms, you will discover they are full with people who don’t want to pay the price of ignoring their bodies, but too often believers suffer from the opposite malady: an apparent unconcern with matters pertaining to their spiritual health. The soul of every believer should be yearning and longing “for the living God” (Psalm 42:2a.) In Psalms 42:1-2a, the Psalmist used a simile comparing his thirst for God to a deer’s thirst for water. He says: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God…” When a deer is thirsty, he will run at full speed until he eventually finds water. Deer realizes when he is thirsty; water

is the only thing that will quench his thirst. When the deer finds the water, he will literally immerse himself into it. Deer will also run to the water when it senses it is in danger. Fear coupled with the physical strain of running, creates a strong desire for water. The Psalmist is picturing himself like a deer on the run, in desperate search of nourishment. As water is to a deer, so God’s presence should be for God’s people. When believers are thirsty and their souls need nourishment, believers can go to God who is the only One that can satisfy our soul’s deepest thirst. (See Isaiah 55:1, John 7:38, Matthew 5:6.) Even when the enemy [Satan] pursues as a predator, believers can immerse them-

in God’s Word (at least 15-30 minutes is recommended). Time spent with God is always time well spent. Prayer - Commune with God in prayer and meditation. Meditating on God’s Word leads to focusing more on the love of God, God’s works, and the things that are heavenly and elevating to the soul. Journaling - Journaling is a record of how faithful God is. Record your spiritual journey and the daily examples of God’s providence. Beloved, the bottom line is hewing to the recommendations for living a healthy spiritual lifestyle is a matter of choice and you can choose today to begin. Living a healthier spiritual lifestyle is a daily challenge, but remember life is lived just once. God’s people are encouraged to live it to the glory of God! (1 Corinthians 10:31.)

selves in God’s presence and find protection. Just as the deer knows intuitively where to find water when it is thirsty, so too believers must earnestly seek God for their spiritual nourishment. Does your soul pant for God? When there is no hunger for the presence of God, it is an indicator that something is wrong spiritually. The following representative list of spiritual habits are provided to assist you in experiencing a deeper level of knowing God, thus contributing to your overall quest for living a healthier spiritual lifestyle: Spend Quiet Time With God – Carve out time in your daily schedule for regu- Next Week: Spring Into A lar and consistent time with Healthy Spiritual Lifestyle God in God’s presence and (Part 3)

The 2020 census is online. Here’s how to do it Census Day, April 1, is almost upon us, and you are legally obligated to participate in it. But if you don’t want to do it over the phone, through the mail, or wait for the census takers to show up on your doorstep, we have good news for you. It’s 2020, and the census is now online — or at least there’s an online option. Let’s look at how this modernized version of America’s greatest survey will work and what it means. Is this the first online US census? While the 2020 census has been billed in some places as the first-ever American census with online submissions, including on the census’s own website, this is not quite true. The 2000 census also had an online response option, but it wasn’t publicized. Perhaps as a result, only 63,000 households ended up filling out the 2000 census online. The low response rate was intentional, allowing it to serve as a test run for the 2010 census. Despite the Census Bureau declaring it to be an “operational success,” the 2010 census didn’t have an online submission option at all. Now, in 2020, the plan is for the majority of responses to come through the online form. So 2020 might not be the first online American census, but it is America’s first digital census. How will it work? Assuming that everything goes to plan — and when it comes to government websites, that isn’t guaranteed —

The US census has entered the 21st century.

filling out the census online is supposed to be very simple. Right around now, you should get something in the mail with a 12-digit census ID. That letter will instruct you to go to www.my2020census.gov, click “start questionnaire,” enter your census ID, and then answer all the questions about your name, address, who lives in your household, etc. And no, you will not be asked about your citizenship status. You can also respond to your census letter by mail or phone. You should do all this by the April 1 deadline, or you’ll get reminder letters until a census taker might ultimately show up at your door and make you do it. If you don’t have a census ID because you either don’t want to wait for it to come in the mail or it just never came at all, you can still fill out the online form. Just go to the website and navigate to the “if you do not have a Census ID, click here” button on the login page. You’ll have to answer a few additional ques-

tions about your address, but you should be able to complete the census after that. If you’re still lost, the Census Bureau also put out a very detailed video on how to complete the online census that might help at https:// youtu.be/vCM0XrSynFw. Hopefully, the online census will be able to handle large amounts of traffic. Just last month, the Government Accountability Office warned that the site could have “performance issues” if too many people use it at the same time. So good luck with that. How else is the latest census futuristic? The 2020 census has also incorporated some new behind-the-scenes technology to cut down on the number of human workers and, therefore, the cost involved. In 2010, census takers were supposed to use custom-made handheld devices to survey non-respondents. Those plans were scrapped when it became apparent that the corresponding app wouldn’t be ready in time.

What did work were the GPS-equipped devices field workers used to verify addresses before the census forms went out. This was all done in person 10 years ago, but this time around, much of that work is being done using satellite images instead. Census workers compare images taken 10 years ago with recent ones; if there’s a significant difference (new streets or homes added or removed), field workers are sent to check them out. And the Census Bureau is going to give handheld devices for census takers another try. This time, they’ll get iPhone 8 devices equipped with an app the census developed with Pegasystems. Pega says it has been working with the Census Bureau on the app since 2016 and “extensively” tested it throughout the process. The company also has years of experience working with governments on software, so it sounds like this app will fare much better than the 2010 devices that never made it out of the gate or the much-maligned 2020 Iowa caucus app, which was hastily made by a company with little experience, time, or funding to complete the job. Is all this safe? Obviously, cybersecurity is a concern with this census. As the Washington Post points out, the government doesn’t have the best record when it comes to functional websites with adequate security from hackers. And there have been attacks on other countries’ censuses before.

In 2016, Australia’s census site was hit with a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, forcing it to shut down for almost two days. The Census Bureau says it’s taking cybersecurity precautions seriously; it’s partnering with the private sector including Microsoft’s Defending Democracy Program and using Amazon Web Service’s cloud service to store the data (hopefully having fixed some of the security issues that were identified by the Office of the Inspector General). The Census Bureau is also working with the Department of Homeland Security. While the Census Bureau insists that 2020 will be a “secure and successful count,” the Government Accountability Office said last month that the bureau “continues to face significant cybersecurity challenges, including those related to addressing cybersecurity weaknesses in a timely manner.” We won’t know how serious these security threats are until the census truly gets underway and counting the estimated 330 million people in this country begins. With more than $800 billion in government spending and congressional seats riding on the results, let’s hope they’re accurate. Regardless, you can do your part to ensure this by filling out your own census form — online or otherwise — as soon as the invitation shows up in your mailbox.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar celebrates Black History Month with MPS students

South Division High School welcomed former Milwaukee Bucks player and NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on February 28, 2020. Students took part in activities that included a roundtable discussion with Jabbar in celebration of Black History Month. A six-time NBA Champion, NBA All-Star, and one of the greatest players in NBA history, Jabbar has proven that he is more than just his basketball career—he is an activist first. Retired for more than 30 years, Jabbar has made continuous efforts advocating for racial and religious issues within our coun-

students Vel Song and Malaya Hunter sang the Black National Anthem in front of Jabbar and their fellow students. Pulaski High School alumnus Rashawn Jackson read his original poem entitled ''This Generation.” Prior to the event, students watched and reflected on Jabbar’s documentary. This led students to engage in an open discussion with Jabbar on the theme “Shoulder to Shoulder.” Students then had the opportunity to ask Jabtry. Students were excited to meet and engage with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and learn about his personal journey and to ask for advice as they prepare to venture out on their own. At the end of the event, students and faculty presented Jabbar with an award and his very own South Division Cardinals attire. Jabbar personally presented all students at the event with an autographed cap. The event was an uplifting celebration to close Black History Month and a chance to highlight the importance of students’ activism in their own school and diverse communities.

Marsy’s Law helps give victims equal rights By: Karen Stokes On April 7, 2020, Wisconsin voters will have an opportunity to use their voice to support equal rights for victims, survivors and their families by voting “yes” for the Marsy’s Law Crime Victims’ Rights Amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution. Marsy’s Law is named after Marsalee “Marsy” Nicholas of California, who was stalked and killed by her ex-boyfriend in 1983. Only one week after her death, Marsy Nicholas’ mother and brother, Dr. Henry T. Nicholas, walked into a grocery store where they were confronted by the accused murderer. The family, who had just come from a visit to Marsy Nicholas’s grave,

In an effort to honor his sister, Henry Nicholas has made it his life’s mission to give victims and their families constitutional protections and equal rights, according to equalrightsforwi.com. Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin ensures that victims of crime have enforceable rights throughout the criminal justice process, just as accused people do. An information session at the Sherman Phoenix and organized by Simon Warren, LaVerne Badger and Natalie Hayden from “Exposed: The Podcast” offered voters a chance to learn more about Marsy’s Law and to ask

husband in the same room. “We need the law and officials to be educated and we need to educate the guardians ad litem on the effects of domestic violence on children,” Moston said. There are approximately 400 bipartisan endorsements for Marsy’s Law in Wisconsin, including the Milwaukee Chapter NAACP, Washington County Sheriff Martin Schulteis and Sojourner Family Peace Center. Warren, one of the organizers of the event said that there will be additional information sessions on Marsy’s Law this month prior to the April 7 election. A “yes” vote will support this measure to add specific rights of crime victims, to the Wisconsin Constitution.

A “no” vote opposes this measure to add specific rights of crime victims to the state constitution beyond those found in Section 9m of Article I of the Wisconsin Constitution. “Unfortunately, everybody has a family member who has gone through some violence and they deserve to be protected, that’s why people should vote ‘Yes’,” Warren said. Badger wanted to make clear to voters that the amendment is on the backside of the ballot so voters need to “flip the ballot.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has just declared the coronavirus a pandemic. That’s just a big word that means a new disease for which people do not have immunity spreads around the world beyond expectations. So now, of course, you may start to worry. People are coughing and sneezing around you and you get scared. So what do you do when you have a sore throat, flu-like symptoms and want to get tested to be sure you DON’T have coronavirus? Here’s a few steps that can make you feel at ease: First, determine if you have COVID-19 symptoms According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the symptoms of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) are fever, cough or difficulty breathing. Who should be tested? “People who are hospitalized, the elderly, and people who have conditions that might make them more likely to have a severe infection need to be tested,” says Amesh Adalja, MD, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins

Center for Health Security. Second, call your healthcare provider The current advice is to NOT to head into an emergency room or your primary care doctor’s office. I repeat, DO NOT PHYSICALLY GO TO THE DOCTOR if you have COVID-19 because you might infect others. “You don’t necessarily have to go to the ER to get these tests, and also you don’t want to expose people in the waiting room,” says Adalja. Instead, if you suspect you have coronavirus, call your healthcare provider and describe your symptoms, and tell them if you’ve been in close contact with anyone who has COVID-19 or live in or have recently traveled from an area with a COVID-19 outbreak. You can also call your local health department for advice. That keeps everyone safe. Third, follow your healthcare provider instructions Your healthcare provider

will tell you where to go to be tested. You might have to report to a special lab; only certain labs are authorized to conduct COVID-19 testing. Don’t worry about this. It’s better to get tested at a secure facility and be found to not have the condition than to just walk in your local doctors office that doesn’t have the resources to properly test you. Fourth, prepare for the test Your healthcare provider may ask you to wear a mask to your appointment or take other steps to avoid infecting others. The CDC does not recommend wearing a face mask if you are well. (So stop

and take that mask off, you look silly). Five, take the test According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, the COVID-19 test may involve one of the following 5 tests: Swab test: A special swab is used to take a sample from the back of your throat Blood test: A sample of blood is collected from a vein Nasal aspirate: A saline solution is injected into your nose, then removed with gentle suction Tracheal aspirate: A thin, lighted tube called a bronchoscope is inserted into your lungs, where a sample is collected Sputum test: If you’re coughing up mucus, it may be collected and tested. Six, follow instructions After getting your results from the test know that there is no specific treatment for coronavirus. But your doctor might recommend steps to reduce your symptoms, including rest, drinking plenty

of fluids and taking over-thecounter pain relievers. Lastly, avoid spreading the infection If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19, the CDC recommends taking the following steps to prevent infecting others: – Stay home from work or school, and don’t go out in public places. – Monitor your symptoms. If they worsen, call your healthcare provider ASAP. – Cover your coughs and sneezes. – Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer that’s at least 60 percent alcohol. – Try to stay in a room separate from other people in your household. Use a separate bathroom, if possible. Wear a face mask if you need to be around others. – Avoid sharing items like dishes, towels and bedding. – Frequently clean surfaces that are touched often, like counters, tabletops and doorknobs.

A Message from Father Michael Betram of St. Benedict & St. Francis Churches

This past weekend was eerily quiet for me without having Mass with you. But at the same time, it created a silence and a quiet that drew me into the season of Lent in a very reflective way. I hope some of the same was your experience. As we are only entering this time of the Coronavirus, I am canceling weekend Masses at St. Benedict and St. Francis for the next two weekends. We will re-open on Palm Sunday, April 5th. Although Milwaukee has not done so, other dioceses [Detroit, Chicago, Grand Rapids] have cancelled Masses over this same time period. Let me say very quickly that we may need to cancel Masses even further if conditions do not improve by April 5th. The Gospel Music Workshop, scheduled for this Saturday, March 21st, has also been canceled. Some unthinkable institutions [the NBA, St. Paddy’s Day celebrations, casinos, schools, bars and restaurants] have responded to this pandemic in a most responsible manner. The Church needs to do likewise. One experience of mine this past weekend was that I missed you. My Sundays include you, and without you, it doesn’t feel like the Lord’s Day. After all, you are the Body of Christ. Let us remember how we personally bring Christ to one another in this time when he need the assurance of the Lord’s presence ever more. I’ll “talk” to you later this week again. Take care. - Fr. Mike Things to do: Pray. Lent is a time of prayer and the closing of events and restrictions in moving about publicly give us the time to do more of that praying. If you’re washing your hands for 20 seconds and singing “Happy Birthday”, you might think of praying during those moments instead of singing. Look after others. Please check on friends and neighbors, especially those that are at the most risk. Try to use email, phone calls and texts to communicate and keep contact to a minimum. Address racism and ignorance. As the coronavirus made its first big appearance in China and then moved to other countries like South Korea, Iran and Italy, it has given rise to racism and discrimination against people of other countries. It has created a sense of blame that feeds the fears of those who would isolate America from the world. Many have said how this is a time to care even more for one another; that extends to the nations of the world as much as it does to individuals in our community and country. Encourage one another. The coronavirus is something that practically no one has ever experienced on a scale that many cannot imagine. We need to counter our fear and panic with hope and encouragement. Call if you are in need. We underestimate the power of the spoken word. When we bring thoughts and feelings to word, we release a power or control that those thoughts and feelings have over us. Don’t be afraid to just call someone and talk, or especially if you are in need of something. Feel free to call me if that is helpful. One parishioner mentioned to me that part of missing Mass is missing my voice and the comfort that it brings at a time like this. I appreciate the compliment. Don’t hesitate to call me or someone you trust and love to find that same strength at a time when we feel a little helpless. Definitely call if you need something like food or medicine. We can work to get something to you. If you are willing to make yourself available for running such needed items to people in need, call or text me; use my cell phone: 920-960-3593. Take care of your own health. Eating well can build up your immune system. Some checkpoints in our diet include cheese, eggs, milk, and nuts for the protein that they provide. Unsweetened fruits and low-sodium vegetables are important. Fiber is essential and can be found in popcorn! Popcorn is a grain that contains antioxidants and fiber. So allow yourself this treat during the time of the coronavirus and feel good about doing it. Do some simple exercise at home. It releases endorphins that keep us positive in our thoughts and attitudes. Daily motivation and inspiration. Celebrating

Women's History Month Twenty inspiring black women who are making history in 2020 (part 3) Each March, Women's History Month recognizes the ground-breaking achievements of women and women of color. Kaia Shivers, a liberal studies professor at New York University, helped Insider.com select a list of 20 female innovators and leaders who are making history and setting records. From entertainers to philanthropists, here are black women who will change the world in 2020.

Renae L. Bluitt just released a Netflix documentary on black female entrepreneurs. Renae L. Bluitt is a New York-based filmmaker who champions black women's representation in the media. Her new Netflix documentary, "She Did That." explores black female entrepreneurs and the work they are doing

to pursue their passions. In an interview with Forbes, she said of her documentary, "Black women and the magic we create is the inspiration behind this film. As the fastest group of entrepreneurs in this country, we are literally turning water into wine in spite of the many obstacles we face on our entrepreneurial journeys."

Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole was an honoree at the National Women's History Museum's Women Making History Awards. Dr. Cole is an anthropologist, educator, museum director, and college president. She became the first black female president of Spelman College from 1987 to 1997 and was president of Bennett College from 2002 to

2007. She has also been the Director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art. She recently spoke at ceremony in the Capitol's Emancipation Hall to mark the the 400th anniversary of the first-recorded forced arrival of enslaved African people. "Owning our history allows us to break free from its shadow, empowering every American of goodwill to have the courage to challenge every day expressions of bigotry and hatred," she said.

Director and producer Ava DuVernay has had her fair share of Hollywood firsts. Ana DuVernay is a writer, producer, director and distributor of independent film. In 2012, she won the direct-

ing award at Sundance Film Festival for her film "Middle of Nowhere," becoming the first black woman to do so. In 2014, her film "Selma" made her the first black woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director and an Academy Award for Best Picture. She also directed "A Wrinkle in Time," and was the first black woman to direct a film with a budget between $150 million and $250 million. Last year, she won critical acclaim for her Netflix series, "When They See Us," based on the Central Park Five. Her new show for OWN, "Cherish the Day," launches this month. At the Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon, she said, "I'm interested in the lives of Black folk as the subject. Not the predicate, not the tangent. These stories deserve to be told — not as sociology, not as spectacle, not as a singular event that happens every so often – but regularly and purposefully as truth and as art on an ongoing basis."

Crystal Williams is a special needs educator who has used meditation to help her students. Williams is a California-based education innovator. She pioneered a new method of introducing meditation into the curriculum for students who have suf-

fered traumas. In an interview with Ark Republic, she said, "Students in foster care often fall behind in school and have some of the worst education outcomes in the country. I know that the traumatized brain does not learn [in stressful environments] and before they will listen to me or respect me, they want to feel safe."

London Breed is serving San Francisco as its first black female mayor. Raised in poverty in San Francisco, Breed made her way to the top of government to become the city's 45th mayor, and the first black woman mayor, in 2018. Breed has made homelessness a priority during her time in office, declaring a shelter crisis and announcing plans to build 1,000 shelter beds in 2020. Her other areas of focus have been mental health, fighting substance abuse, and paid internships for city high school students. In an interview with Kara Swisher, she said, "I think my biggest job for me, because this is why I got into politics in the first place, is honestly to really change the future of San Francisco to make sure that people who, sadly, grow up in poverty don't have to have the kinds of experiences that I had to have growing up in San Francisco."

Keep it clean: How to improve your device hygiene

For all the things we touch throughout the day, we touch our phones more than anything else. And multiple studies have shown that our phones are germier than a toilet seat. Yuck. And on top of that, according to recent studies, Americans are checking their phones anywhere from about 50 to 100 times a day, and actually pressing and swiping more than 2,500 times per day. Proper device hygiene has never been more important. Here are T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile's tips for keeping the germs away: 1. Don't use your phone in the restroom. When toilets flush, they can spread germs all over the place, including the surface of our phones. And as long as we're having the bathroom talk, make sure to always wash your hands after visiting the facilities and, of course, throughout the day. The CDC recommends washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds — about the amount of time

In the past, we were instructed to not use disinfectant wipes on our phone screens, but now Apple says it's OK to use Clorox Wipes and others with similar concentrations. Samsung hasn't commented on whether it's safe to use disinfectant wipes on its phones.

AT&T's recently revised cleaning guidelines suggest that you "spray a nonabrasive it takes to sing “Happy Birth- with your phone. Rather than or alcohol-based (70 percent day” twice. Different device manufacturers have different do’s and don’ts for cleaning your phone; check the booklet that came with your device or visit the manufacturer's website for specifics. We suggest cleaning your device with a damp microfiber cloth, and wiping down your phone and case completely. Be cautious of using alcohol and household cleaners as they may damage your phone.
