'We Are the Drum' returns to live performances in 2022

On Friday, March 11 through Sunday March 13, 2022, CAPITA Productions presented "We Are The Drum 2022," at Milwaukee Marshall High School, 4141 N. 64th Street. "We Are The Drum" is now in its 28th season and these were the first live performances since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The previous year's show had been held virtually online. The show is a musical journey of the Black experience in America with 50 performers ranging in age from 3 to 93 years old. This year's production, "Remember, Honor and Inspire," centered on COVID-19 and the summer uprising stemming from the death of George Floyd in 2020 as well as the murder of Emmett Till, nearly 67 years ago. CAPITA's mission to be a theater for and by the people. Anyone who wants to explore their acting, singing and dancing chops can audition and be in the play, which embodies the spirit of community theater.

Milwaukee Academy of Science Youth win Silver Ball during State Championship On Saturday, March 19, 2022, 20 bright and talented young men of color from Milwaukee Academy of Science competed for WIAAWI Division 4 Basketball State Championship and won the "Silver Ball," in Madison. Most of the young men on the Novas team are freshman. They have worked incredibly hard this year to get where they are, and Milwaukee Academy of Science President and CEO Anthony McHenry has been doing a great job with them at the school. This is the first time in school history the Novas have gone to state to compete. "They are an amazing group of young men," said Curt Hansen, School Athletic Director.

Northcott Neighborhood House Senior Club presents "Remember & Rejoice Luncheon"

Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Friday, March 18, 2022, Northcott Neighborhood House Executive Director Tony A. Kearney, Sr., and Northcott Senior Club hosted "Remember & Rejoice Luncheon," at 2400 N. 6th Street. The luncheon was held in order to rejoice over the possible ending of the pandemic, and to spend time with good friends and great food. It was a chance to share oneon-one conversations once again as the pandemic left many

seniors feeling lonely and isolated. The luncheon was a celebration of reconnections as well as the ending of the pandemic. As well as reconnecting, there was also good food, information and special presentations by County Board Supervisor Priscilla Coggs-Jones and Michelle Allison from the Department of Aging (right photo).

Obituaries

Tribute for José Antonio Mantilla José Antonio Mantilla, 65, of Elm Grove, WI and Hernando, FL peacefully went to his eternal home on March 3, 2022, after a hard-fought battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. José was born on October 25, 1956, to Félix and Delores Mantilla in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. He lived in Puerto Rico and Milwaukee as a child and graduated from Messmer High School. After graduation, José enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he dutifully served. When his stint with the Marines ended, José returned to Milwaukee and worked for Master Lock Company and Snap-On Tools, ultimately becoming a General Foreman. While working in the factory, he also went to school full-time and served as Mr. Mom, raising Tonya and José II. All this work culminated in José receiving his BA in Economics from the University

of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also earned an executive sales management certification from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He then began his long and illustrious career in banking working at Firstar (now USBank) where he became a Cash Management Officer and stayed in that role during his time with BancOne in Cincinnati. Jose was a certified treasury professional and a promotion to Vice President Treasury Management Services brought José back to Milwaukee with M&I Corporation. KeyBank in Cleveland then brought José on as Senior Vice President Global Treasury Management. His passion for community banking and empowering communities brought him back to Milwaukee to assume the role of President and CEO of Legacy Bank career as CEO and President and later North Milwaukee of Legacy Redevelopment State Bank. He finished his Corporation. José was widely respected
