March Awareness Days Week 5: Honoring Nurses National Doctor’s Day is celebrated March 30, 2021; however, we could not think of honoring our doctors without also giving a shout out to our nurses who are often unappreciated and their hard work goes unnoticed and sometimes overlooked. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a strain on our health care system. While International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12 every year, we are honoring our nurses alongside our doctors to let them know that they too are very much appreciated! National Nurses’ Day was organized annually by the International Council of Nurses. International Nurses Day celebrates the contribution that nurses make to societies around the world. The date has a very strong significance, as it is the birthday of perhaps the world’s most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale.1 According to an entry in the biography of the Ency-

clopedia Britannica, Florence Nightingale was born May 12, 1890 in Florence, Italy. She was a British nurse, statistician, and social reformer. Florence spent many hours in the hospital wards and her night rounds giving personal care to the wounded is what established her image as the “Lady with the Lamp.” Nightingale’s efforts to formalize nursing education led to the establishment of the first scientifically based nursing school, the Nightingale School of Nursing. Nightingale was also instrumental in setting up training for midwives. The International Nurses Day observed annually on May 12, commemorates Nightingale’s birth and celebrates the important of nurses in health care.2 Nurses, like doctors, are some of the most hardworking, sacrificing workers. Even before COVID-19, nurses worked tirelessly often on weekends, holidays and overtime. They spend hours on their feet and always have a

smile when they check on a patient. These selfless health care workers are not interested in the limelight but in helping others. You are encouraged to show your favorite nurse(s) how much you appreciate them. Below is a list of ideas to show your favorite nurse(s) appreciation: 1. Thank-you card. 2. Gift baskets filled with fruit, healthy snacks, or a candle, CD with soft music, etc. 3. Plant or flowers delivered to the nurses’ station. 4. Gift certificate towards a comfortable pair of shoes or gel inserts since nurses spend

so much time on their feet. 5. Gift card to a coffee shop or lunch. Just be creative! In these challenging times during the pandemic, your favorite nurse will love the thoughtfulness and appreciate whatever kind gesture you make. Beloved while we have focused on nurses in this article, I recognize there are many other health care workers and medical staff who also touch lives every day: Nursing assistants, home health care workers, first responders, etc. These simple but practical meaningful ways of showing appreciation will make your favorite nurse(s)

or home health care worker, medical staff and/or first responder feel valued. April –Alcohol Awareness Month (Week 1) Spotlighting different awareness topics helps to educate the community and it reminds people that these conditions exist. For the month of April, we will bring attention to alcohol awareness. According to the alcohol. org1, Alcohol Awareness Month is a public health program organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as a way of increasing outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to

alcohol. The program was started in April 1987 with the intention of targeting college-aged students who might be drinking too much as part of their newfound freedom. Alcohol Awareness Month has since become a national movement to draw more attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism as well as how to help families and communities deal with drinking problems. How can you help Alcohol Awareness Month make a difference? We can use this month to

family members to make small changes, like keeping track of their drinking and setting drinking limits. • Encourage your church or faith organization to add information about alcohol to your church’s newsletter or post on their website. • Tweet about Alcohol Awareness Month. • Host a virtual communiraise awareness about alcoty event where families can hol abuse and act to prevent learn about local addiction it — both at home and in the resources. community. awareness month is encouraging and choosing an Alcohol-Free Weekend during the month of April. The intent is for the drinker to be encouraged to stop drinking from Monday – Friday and then gauge the effect of being alcohol free. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence notes if it was difficult to manage 72 hours without drinking, that struggle could signal a dependence on alcohol that should be more closely examined by contacting your health care provider.2 Source: 1 www.alcohol.org/awareness-month

Remaining faithful in a pandemic By Sandra Millon Underwood, RN, PhD, FAAN Professor, UW-Milwaukee School of Nursing The pandemic has taken a toll on our lives and many of our mainstay institutions and businesses—even the church. For more than a year now, Sunday mornings have looked different with many communities of faith going to virtual services, reaching out by telephone, and finding creative, but meaningful ways to engage with congregants. Christian worship in the United States, typically characterized by its adherence to tradition, appears to have been significantly altered by the coronavirus pandemic. According to National Public Radio (NPR), nearly 400 churchgoers that were interviewed stated that the pandemic has changed their views of church life and their expectations for worship in the months and years ahead. Pastor Anthony Wade,

Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church, located in Madison, WI, and First Vice President of the General Baptist State Convention views the pandemic from a unique vantage point—he recently retired from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as Program Manager, after 40 years. “Since my secular position focused on public health, I believe that we cannot be so heavenly bound that we are no earthly good. Public health is important so each Sunday morning and during Wednesday Night Bible Study, I address COVID-19 with members and reiterate the safety protocols we must take. I’ve been vaccinated and I’m encouraging others to lay aside the myths associated with history and, rather, focus on the science,” said Pastor Wade. There are eighteen churches affiliated with the General Baptist State Convention, and while Pastor Wade declined to specifically comment on the impact COVID-19 has had on those churches, he knows that it has negatively impacted

churches in the community and the world. “I can tell you that at Second Baptist ChurchMadison, we have been meeting virtually since March of 2020. And, we have a four-point plan before we re-open our building: 1) Dane County must have achieved a high percentage of vaccinated residents 2) we must ensure our church is set up with safety protocols that meet all mandated requirements, which means additional costs for us, 3) we believe the Holy Spirit will lead us when it’s okay to reopen, and 4) we will re-open when we believe we can do so safely,” said Pastor Wade. A survey by the Pew Research Center in April found that more than 90 percent of regular churchgoers in the United States said their churches had closed their doors to combat the spread of the coronavirus, with the vast majority responding that worship services had moved entirely online. Service times, events, and even how worshippers provide financial support, may be a thing of the past—at least for now. All these changes are not all negative. In addition to live streaming, many pastors have found unique and creatives ways to stay in touch with church members during the pandemic. Bishop Lawrence Kirby,

Sr., Senior Pastor of Wisconsin’s oldest Black church, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Racine, WI, is among those pastors who have gone above and beyond to ensure members’ needs are being met. “I enjoy cooking, so I’ve cooked complete dinners for our senior members. If seniors don’t feel like cooking or are feeling isolated, delivering meals to them is our way of reaching out and letting them know we care about them,” said Bishop Kirby. Out of an abundance of caution, several churches in Wisconsin have kept their doors closed to Sunday morning worship during the pandemic. Pastor Demetris Crum,

Acts Church of Kenosha (and son of Bishop Lawrence Kirby, Sr.) agrees that virtual worship experiences are probably here to stay.

Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church-Kenosha, said his church closed its doors to worship services in March of 2020, held outdoor services during the summer and as the weather got colder, the church returned to limited, socially distanced worship services. “Throughout the

pandemic, we also livestreamed services. We plan to re-open for worship the first Sunday in April but will continue to maintain safety protocols such as wearing masks and staying socially distanced,” said Pastor Crum. Like Pastor Crum, many black churches, long characterized by tradition with fellowship playing a great role, appear to have significantly changed their worship experience since the coronavirus pandemic. Many now rely on creative techniques and social media platforms to stay connected with members. “In my opinion, God

permitted COVID-19 for His own sovereign purposes. COVID exposed many issues in society. The world, including our churches, will never operate the same. We’ve learned a lot. More persons will be reached for Christ because live streaming is here to stay,” said Dr. John Walton, Senior Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Milwaukee. Pastor Lawrence Kirby II, Senior Pastor of The

appear to understand, embrace, and appreciate how the faith community will need to adapt to a new normal to accommodate those people who don’t yet feel safe to attend worship service. “When we re-launch on Mother’s Day, we also plan to continue our virtual service as well. We also record services and continue to make services available online on our website,” said Dr. Walton. ***

“We closed down like most churches did in 2020 and re-opened the last Sunday in August with socially distanced protocols in place. We continue to livestream our services as well because we knew that some members would remain digital,” said Pastor Kirby II. In addition to ensuring church members are adhering to safety protocols, many pastors are proactively helping spread the word about COVID-19 vaccines and encouraging members to get them as soon as they are available. Pastor Kirby II has gone a step further and is involved with the Kenosha County Health Department’s Task Force. Among their strategies is creating a video to promote the vaccines. “We want people to know that the vaccine is safe. We’re producing a video that can be used in various venues that explains why the COVID-19 vaccines are important, as well as providing educational information about the vaccines. Members of the task force— including myself—have taken pictures getting vaccinated and are posting them on social media platforms,” said Pastor Kirby II. Pastor Crum agrees that it’s important for religious leaders to play a leadership role in encouraging congregants to get vaccinated. “I let members know that I have been vaccinated. I’ve also made staff available to help anyone register for the vaccine that needs help. Most of our seniors have either gotten the vaccine or plan to, but the younger people appear to be more hesitant. I think it’s fear of the unknown, but as more people receive the vaccines, I believe they, too, will come around,” said Pastor Crum. Each of the pastors said they plan to re-open their churches, with socially distant protocols in place. They— along with many other religious communities—

Scaling Up Operations In Faith Communities • Establish and maintain communication with local and State authorities to determine current mitigation levels in your community. • Provide protections for staff and congregants at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Offer options for staff at higher risk for severe illness (including older adults and people of all ages with certain underlying medical conditions) that limit their exposure risk. Offer options for congregants at higher risk of severe illness that limit their exposure risk (e.g., remote participation in services). • Consistent with applicable federal and State laws and regulations, put in place policies that protect the privacy and confidentiality of people at higher risk for severe illness regarding underlying medical conditions. • Encourage any organizations that share or use the facilities to also follow these considerations as applicable. • If your community provides social services in the facility as part of its mission, consult CDC’s information for schools and businesses and workplaces, as relevant, for helpful information. Discovering Our Deep Cultural Roots In The Arts

April is National Poetry Month: Let's Celebrate Black Poets

African American poetry predates the written words linked to our rich oral tradition from the mother country Africa. Black poems are inextricably linked to the experience of African American through their history in America from slavery to segregation and the equal rights movement. Black poetry also draws its inspiration from

musical traditions such as gospel, blues, jazz and rap. The earliest known Black American poets were Jupiter Hammon (1711-1800), Lucy Terry (1730-1821) and Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784). Hammon, the first African American to publish a poem, writes “An Evening Though” about salva-

tion in a Methodist hymn. Wheatley wrote poems that reflected on religion, patriotism and liberation. As an educated slave, Wheatley published a collection of poems in 1773 on religion and morals.

the first and youngest African American National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States. Gorman presented her poem The Hill We Climb at the Inauguration ceremony for President Joe Biden on January 20, 2021.

Today, we salute our local Black poetry continues to inspire poets along with Amanda as well as give us hope for a better Gorman (pictured left) as tomorrow!
