Milwaukeeans gather to protest SCOTUS opinion on Roe v. Wade

Photos by Kim Robinson

On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, protesters gathered in downtown Milwaukee to demonstrate against the United States Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the groundbreaking case that made abortion legal in the United States nearly 50 years ago. Marchers from all walks

of life, male and female gathered in Red Arrow Park to voice their concern on the potential overruling of the landmark case. Many have said that overturning the law would make it much more dangerous for the health and safety of women in the US.

Karine Jean-Pierre to become White House press secretary, the first black and openly LGBTQ person in the role Karine Jean-Pierre will become the new White House press secretary when Jen Psaki departs the role later this month, President Joe Biden announced in a statement Thursday, May 5, 2022 becoming the first black and openly LGBTQ person to hold the position. Jean-Pierre currently serves as the White House's principal deputy press secretary. "Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this difficult job, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people," Biden said in a statement, adding that "Jen Psaki has set the standard for returning decency, respect and decorum to the White House Briefing Room." Jean-Pierre will formally begin following Psaki's last day, which will be May 13. CNN reported in April that Psaki was planning on leaving her role for one at MSNBC. Last May, Jean-Pierre became the second black woman in history to hold the daily press briefing. She has served on the White House's senior communications team since Biden took office and before that was an adviser to his campaign and chief of staff to now-Vice President Kamala Harris. Jean-Pierre's family in-

cludes her partner, CNN national correspondent Suzanne Malveaux, and their daughter. "I am still processing it because, as Jen said, at the top this is a historic moment and it's not lost on me. I understand how important it is for so many people out there. So many different communities that I stand on their shoulders," Jean-Pierre said. She added: "It is an honor and a privilege to be behind this podium." Jean-Pierre also took a moment to thank Psaki. "She has been just a wonderful colleague, a friend, a mentor, during this past year and a half and I don't think I would be here without so many people, but including her and she is just a true solid, amazing person," JeanPierre said. Jean-Pierre is familiar with her new role. She is often in the room when Psaki briefs reporters, has filled in for her at the lectern and has

also gaggled with reporters traveling with Biden on Air Force One. Recently, she replaced Psaki at the last minute for Biden's four-day trip to Europe amid the Russian invasion after Psaki tested positive for COVID-19 the day before Biden was scheduled to leave. Psaki's departure is unsurprising, given she had been public about her plan to leave after one year on the job. Several names had been under consideration to replace her, including Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, who has become a visible face of the administration in briefings and on cable television since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. At the White House briefing May 5, a visibly moved Psaki invited Jean-Pierre up to the podium with her and the two women embraced as Psaki went through JeanPierre's qualifications and the significance of her taking the job.

"I just want to take the opportunity to celebrate and congratulate my friend, my colleague, my partner in truth, Karine Jean-Pierre, the next White House press secretary," Psaki told reporters at the White House. She added: "She will be the first black woman, the first out LGBTQ+ person to serve in this role, which is amazing because representation matters and she is going to, she will give a voice to so many and allow and show so many what is truly possible when you work hard, and dream big and that matters, and ... we should celebrate that." Psaki also elaborated on Jean-Pierre's career up, describing her as a "remarkable" person with "decades of experience." "I just can't wait to see her shine at the podium. So congratulations, and I can't wait to see you bring your own style, and brilliance, to this job, " Psaki said. Close Biden adviser returns to White House The staffing shakeup in the press office comes as the White House is making several other personnel moves in preparation for a potential Republican takeover on Capitol Hill in the midterm elections. One of Biden's closest advisers, Anita Dunn, will return to the West Wing as a senior adviser, as his team

also shores up the White House counsel's office, given Republicans have promised to launch a slew of investigations if they retake the majority. Dunn is permanently leaving her consulting firm, SKDK, people familiar with the matter tell CNN. She will no longer be a partner in the firm or listed on the company's website, people familiar with the matter say. While Dunn no longer owns a piece of the firm, after it was sold in 2015, her role as a top strategist to Biden, former President Barack Obama and many other elected Democratic officials has given SKDK significant prominence in Washington and beyond. During the presidential campaign and the first several months of the Biden administration, Dunn took a leave of absence from the firm. But given the new role at the White House, people familiar with the matter say, she is severing ties with the firm. An official says Dunn will now be a full-time staff member, and -- as with any other full-time staff member -- will sign the ethics pledge, file an OGE 278 and be subject to all White House ethics and conflict of interest rules, including "rigorous counseling" on her ethics obligations.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

May is Mother’s Day Month (Week 2) Mother’s Day is honored on the 2nd Sunday in May 2022! The balance of the month I will combine with the National Old Farmer’s Almanac. They have published a section regarding the 10 Fun and Creative ways to Celebrate Mom this Year! Enjoy! It will run for the next 3 weeks. 1. Offer yard and garden service. If you’re local to your Mom, give her a “gift certificate” for your family’s yard and garden services. Help her by laying down mulch. Put the “certificate” in a flowerpot with spring-planted bulbs which flower in summer. If you’re not local, how about a subscription to The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Planner? Any gardener would love it! And it’s an instant present without shipping!

Cooper published online in Woman’s Day Magazine, a part of Hearst Digital Media. The piece is entitled: “21 Beautiful Mother’s Day Poems That Will Make Mom Feel Loved”, at: www.womansday.com/relationships/family-friends.

flowers! If you have kids, get them involved! Mom or grandma will love the surprise. Of course, flowers and plants are always a delight. If you’re local, deliver plants to her porch in person. If you’re not local, there’s always delivery in most places (but order well enough ahead!). • A rose bush or geranium plant is always welcome.

2. Decorate your mom’s door or give flowers! If • Or perhaps a dogwood or you’re nearby, you can have flowering shrub for her garfun decorating your Mom’s den would be appreciated. front door with streamers, special signs, a wreath, and

• Here’s another idea! Make a bouquet with the monthly birth flowers of each child. (See Almanac Birth Flower and their Meaning at www. almanac.com.) 3. Cook for mom or set up a brunch date. Breakfast in bed is always a classic and appreciated! Something simple is fine for this, such as toast or a croissant with jam or fruit and a cup of coffee or tea. Or, if she’s not fond of eating in bed, how about preparing a sit-down brunch? Enjoy this poem by George

Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky, Hundreds of shells on the shore together, Hundreds of birds that go singing by, Hundreds of lambs in the sunny weather. Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn, Hundreds of bees in the purple clover, Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, But only one mother the wide world over. — George Cooper

No access means no choice

option in a country that purports to safeguard humane conditions, rights and choices for all. No one in this country has ever been forced by law to have an abortion. Additionally, no one should be forced into bearing a child that they can neither care for nor afford, for whatever reason, just to humor someone else’s mindset. Without legal and safe abortion remaining among the available options in every state of our country, the result is denial of the basic right to privacy and equal protection under the law for all.

Since January 22, 1973, women in the United States have felt assured that their legal right to the option of a safe abortion was protected, after the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade. A second case decided later that same year, Doe v. Bolton, seemed to further safeguard women’s reproductive rights, especially to preserve the mental as well as physical health of women. These “settled law” cases were not the same as having a bona fide constitutional amendment specifically guaranteeing reproductive health as a protected human right; but these precedents were the best we had, or so we thought. Then on May 3, 2022, nearly 50 years after the Roe v. Wade decision, that false sense of protection was abruptly threatened, when a Supreme Court opinion was leaked to the press. The opinion, drafted by Associate Justice Samuel Alito, strongly suggested that the court could possibly overturn Roe v. Wade later this summer.

Reproductive health law regarding women in the United States is currently comprised of a fragile patchwork of state laws which impose various restrictions mainly on a woman’s access to abortion on demand – that is, the right to terminate pregnancy at will. One of the historical objections to legalized abortion has been that it would open the floodgates to abortion to be used as a ready form of birth control.

abortion rates among U.S. women ages 15-44 dropped from 30 per 1,000 women in 1980 to 11.3 per 1,000 in 2018; and the rate continues to drop. The decline has been attributed to a combination of factors that have given women more autonomy over their own reproductive health decisions – including access to better overall health information; more choices in inexpensive, effective birth control methods; and access to safe, legal The past 50 years have abortion, if needed. borne out that nothing could be further from reality. AcAs divisive as the abortion cording to government data, debate has become at times,

anyone who has ever been faced with making that decision can attest that it is personal and anything but casual. It is a decision so charged with individual anguish, and tinged with medical, religious, moral, economic and practical aspects that it cannot be made by some impersonal committee for political expediency or to satisfy a capricious whim. It has been, should be, and always will be an individual woman’s decision alone to make.

Obstructing access to abortion is neither pro-life nor pro-choice. Rather, it’s no choice. As a nation, that can’t be who or what we aspire to be, now or in the future.

Therefore, unfettered access to safe and legal abortion must remain a viable

The connection between shingles and breast cancer and what you should know In terms of breast cancer, there’s so much information about it circulating out there. Most of the facts out there are: there is more than one stage of breast cancer, breast cancer can go away, it can run in the family, it mostly affects women but men can get breast cancer and if diagnosed with breast cancer, there are so many ways to go about treatment and removal of the tumor and cells that cause it. Let’s not forget about the yearly walks that people create to support and raise money for breast cancer research, the different organizations all over the country that help you find resources if you were to be diagnosed with any stage of breast cancer and so much more. All in all, it’s great to know that with such a common disease, there are so many resources out there for you to do your research because when it comes to breast cancer, there is plenty of information that needs more light shed on it, like the connection between shingles and breast cancer. What is shingles? Shingles is a type of viral infection that causes painful rashes all over the body. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. This virus is the same one that causes

other types of this treatment. If none of the hormonal and targeted therapy treatments work to kill the cancer cells, doctors will then call for chemotherapy. So if you are living with metastatic breast cancer and hormonal and targeted therapy works for you, your chances of developing shingles are lower than other cancer patients who rely more on chemotherapy.

chickenpox. If you’ve ever had chickenpox, then unfortunately the varicella-zoster virus is still in your body. Though it lies inactive in your nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain, it can reactivate years later and come back as shingles. Usually, shingles will show wrapped around your torso as a single stripe of blisters. The symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling, burning sensations, a red rash, itching and blisters filled with fluid. Sometimes people experience nausea, fever, light sensitivity and headaches when dealing with shingles. Though shingles isn't fatal, it is very painful to experience. What is the connection between shingles and breast cancer? Though the shingles virus has no history of causing breast cancer, there are connections between the two. First, it’s easy to assume that your symptoms from shingles might be breast cancer because of how and where shingles appear on the body. Shingles can develop on or near the breast and the rashes can be confused with can-

cer cells. The second link to shingles and breast cancer is that if you have breast cancer, you have a higher chance of developing shingles. Newly diagnosed cancer patients are at a higher risk of developing shingles.

without cancer actually has nothing to do with the cancer itself, it’s due to the chemotherapy used to treat the cancer. However, if you are living with metastatic breast cancer, your chances of developing shingles may be lower, and here’s why.

Is there a way to prevent shingles? The only real way to prevent shingles is through the shingles vaccination. There aren’t any lifestyle changes that you can do to prevent shingles, especially if you are someone with a weakened immune system.

How likely are your to develop shingles living with metastatic breast cancer? When it comes to shingles and breast cancer, if you were diagnosed with a tumor-related cancer such as breast cancer, then you have a 40 percent increase in the risk of developing shingles compared to someone who does not have cancer.

When it comes to the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, there is more than one type of treatment to get rid of it.

Though shingles is mostly seen in people 50 and older, anyone can develop shingles but again some people are at a higher risk of developing it.

If you are someone living with stage 4 breast cancer and in the midst or have already undergone treatment, talk to your doctor about how the shingles vaccine may benefit you. Living with The reason someone with If the first type of hormon- breast cancer is already a lot breast cancer might develop al and targeted therapy does so let’s not let shingles make shingles faster than someone not work, doctors will try it worse.
