Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. The event was free and open to the public. The Heal the Hood campaign strives to promote self-sustainability and non-violence. It also encourages all to join the conversation on how to end violence and crime in the community by coming together and making a change. Alderwoman Milele Coggs said, "Saturday’s block party is a great place for the community to spread love, unity, and healing at a time when the city and nation have seen so much tragedy." Sponsors for the 10th Annual Heal the Hood Block Party and Resource Fair were the 414Life Violence Prevention Team, the City of Milwaukee Health Department, Milwaukee County, UW-Platteville, the City of Milwaukee, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, 88.9FM Radio Milwaukee and The League www.wearetheleague.org.

Vivian King hosts special reading, conversation for National Stroke Awareness Month On Saturday, May 21, 2022, award winning author Vivian L. King, hosted a special reading and conversation about her book, "When the Words Suddenly Stopped: Finding My Voice Again After a Massive Stroke" during National Stroke Awareness Month at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society and Museum, 2620 W. Center Street. African American women are twice as likely to suffer a stroke compared to white women, and they are more likely to have more severe strokes, and at younger ages. Most people worry about the more common stroke causes: high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, heavy drinking, use of illicit drugs, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, and family history. Doctors say taking birth control pills over the age of 40 is what led to a blood clot in King's brain and, ultimately, her stroke. King uses National Stroke Awareness Month to warn women of stroke risk factors. Pictured at the event are (from left) Johnell Sharp, Shirley Sharp, Clayborn Benson, Vivian King, and Beverly Cooley. Milwaukee one step closer to hosting Republican National Convention

Hours after the Milwaukee Common Council unanimously approved hosting the 2024 Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Mayor Cavalier Johnson (right) signed a tentative legislative deal at a press conference for the Republican National Convention to meet in Milwaukee in 2024. Milwaukee and Nashville, TN are currently in final contention to be the 2024 host city which would totally transform Milwaukee as a hospitality destination, according to Gerard Randall (at podium), a Republican Party of Wisconsin vice chairman and coordinator of the prospective Milwaukee RNC host committee who also made brief remarks at the press conference. Organizers said hosting the conference would add more hotel and convention space downtown and could bring in an additional $250 million in economic benefits. The decision represented a swift turnaround after a committee of the Common Council delayed a vote on an agreement with the RNC last week. “We continued to work on it collaboratively and got Staff Photo the deal done,” said Mayor Johnson when asked what caused the council to change its mind. A final decision on the 2024 host city is expected by the RNC by the end of June, according to information presented at the press conference.

Special prosecutors won't charge former Wauwatosa officer in Jay Anderson, Jr.'s death Special prosecutors say former Wauwatosa police officer Joseph Mensah intentionally caused the shooting death of Jay Anderson, Jr., but they will not charge him. The decision validates a district attorney's finding years ago that Mensah had acted in self-defense when he shot Anderson, Jr. The special prosecutors, Milwaukee attorney Scott Hansen and La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke, said they couldn't find any legal basis for charging Mensah. The Anderson family attorney, Kim Motley, asked the prosecutors to withdraw and for the court to appoint new prosecutors. Judge Glenn Yamahiro called Motley's motion to withdraw special prosecutors "erroneous", and said he can't keep passing on pros-

ecutors until one wants to take the case. Yamahiro called out a fatally flawed system and said selective use of body cameras hurts transparency and can be changed in Madison. He also said fellow police departments shouldn't investigate each other. "I'm not stopping till this man (Mensah) is behind bars where he needs to be," Anderson's mother told the judge at the end of the Wednesday, June 1, 2022 hearing. WISN 12 News learned Tuesday, May 31, that special prosecutors were meeting with the family of Jay Anderson, Jr. ahead of Wednesday's expected announcement. Mensah came upon Anderson, who was 25, sleeping in a car after hours in a Wauwatosa park in June 2016. Mensah said he fired after

scure legal maneuver similar to a grand jury inquiry to persuade Yamahiro that there was enough probable cause to support charging Mensah. Yamahiro, late last year, assigned the special prosecutors to the case after hearing evidence in a John Doe hearing sought by the Anderson family. After the killing, Milwaukee County District AttorAnderson reached for a gun ney John Chisholm declined on the passenger seat. to file criminal charges Anderson's family disagainst Mensah, who said puted that Anderson had Anderson reached for a gun reached for the gun and in the car he was sleeping in their attorney used an obwhen Mensah confronted

him that night. During the John Doe hearings, Yamahiro ruled the evidence did not support Mensah's claims. He has maintained his innocence. During the new investigation, special prosecutors requested immunity for three officers who responded to the Anderson scene after the shooting, although the prosecutors said none of the three were considered suspects. It has not been made public what, if any, information those officers provided the special prosecutors.

Rail merger would weigh heavily on poor and black communities By Hazel Trice Edney People of color are no stranger to shouldering more than their fair share of the burdens of modern society. It’s historically been the case. And the last two years – marked by the devastating pandemic, social unrest, including the most recent massacre in Buffalo, NY among other racial injustices – have only underscored the disparate challenges faced by black and other people of color. Sadly, the next pain point for many of our communities may come from an entirely unexpected place: the merger of two large railroads. At issue is a proposed $31 billion merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern railroads, a transaction that will have massive implications while delivering little in discernable public benefit. And beyond delivering little benefit to consumers or shippers still facing down years of volatility, critics say the merger will in fact bring a rash of negative consequences that reach far beyond the question of supply chain efficiency. It is already clear which communities will bear the brunt of those negative con-

Here’s the problem with that: those 20 additional dirty oil trains aren’t rolling through rich, white suburbs. No, typically, these routes run through the poor communities – the communities that so many people of color call home. That’s a problem. for any number of reasons. But as is so often the case, people of color haven’t been given a fair opportunity to hear directly from the project’s proponents or, more importantly, to speak on why it’s a bad deal. There have been no public hearings in the communities that stand to be impacted by this project. That means no dialogue with the people who will have to look out their windows and see a 12,000foot crude oil train rumbling by or will have to deal with the hundreds of new tractor trailer trucks moving through their neighborhood on a daily basis. People of color and low income communities deserve better. Rural communities also deserve better. All of us deserve better than to be force-fed a merger that does nothing but line corporate pockets while putting our people at risk. The Biden Administration and federal regulators should not approve this project. And at an absolute minimum, they should ensure that the communities put at risk by this merger have an opportunity to speak up in public hearings so they are no longer forgotten or ignored about an issue that will have very real consequences for their daily

Continuum of Motherhood (Conclusion) This is the final day of Mother’s Day Month and I want to celebrate Motherhood. A prayer written by “Amy” was published on a blog several years ago about how mothers can be better honored. “Amy” offered a nice prayer called “Honoring the Continuum of Motherhood.” I have borrowed “Amy’s” title of her prayer, (albeit slightly modified) as the title of this month’s article. Enjoy! “The Messy Middle of Amy” Fast forward several years to Mother’s Day. A pastor asked all mothers to stand. On my immediate right, my mother stood and on my immediate left, a dear friend stood. I, a woman in her late 30s, sat. I don’t know how others saw me, but I felt dehumanized, gutted as a woman. Real women stood; empty shells sat. I do not normally feel this way. I do not like feeling this way. I want no woman to ever feel this way in church again. It is imperative to acknowledge the wide continuum of www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

mothering to not alienate any woman present at your church on Mother’s Day. Mothers, we honor… • Those who gave birth this year to their first child—we celebrate with you. • Those who lost a child this year – we mourn with you. • Those who are in the trenches with little ones every day and wear the badge of food stains – we appreciate you. • Those who experienced loss through miscarriage, failed adoptions, or running away—we mourn with you. • Those who walk the hard path of infertility, fraught with pokes, prods, tears, and disappointment – we walk with you. Forgive us when we say foolish things. We don’t mean to make this harder than it is. • Those who are foster moms, mentor moms, and spiritual moms – we need you.

• To those who have warm and close relationships with your children – we celebrate with you. • Those who have disappointment, heartache, and distance with your children – we sit with you. • Those who lost their mothers this year – we grieve with you. • Those who experienced abuse at the hands of your own mother – we acknowledge your experience. • Those who lived through driving tests, medical tests, and the overall testing of motherhood – we are better for having you in our midst. • Those who have aborted children – we remember

them and you on this day. • Those who are single mothering your own children and for you who hoped to be married by now – we mourn that life has not turned out the way you longed for it to be. • Those who step-parent – we walk with you on these complex paths. • Those who envisioned lavishing love on grandchildren, yet that dream is not to be, we grieve with you. • Those who will have emptier nests in the upcoming year – we grieve and rejoice with you. • And those who are pregnant with new life, both expected and surprising – we anticipate with you. Beloved, while you may think Amy’s words are not perfect, it is nevertheless an interesting concept to honor mothers in all stages of the process. Mother’s Day comes only once a year. Make it special for your mother all year round. Show

her you care by acknowledging her value in your life. And if you don’t have your Mom around, treat someone who is like a mother to you out for brunch or dinner on Mother’s Day. Perspectives

Wednesday, June 08, 2022

Only in America By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times Daily life in the United States was violently disrupted yet again on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. An 18-yearold lone gunman in Uvalde, TX, a small town just west of metropolitan San Antonio, entered an elementary school with an assault rifle and opened fire, killing 19 fourth- and fifth-grade students along with two teachers. Prior to arriving at the school, he had just shot his own grandmother in the face at her home. After a 77-minute delay by local police, responding officers fatally shot and killed the gunman. This latest atrocity occurred less than two weeks after another mass shooting that took place at a Buffalo, NY supermarket, claiming the lives of 10 African American shoppers. The gunman behind this incident was also brandishing an assault rifle. He was eventually shot and wounded by police and is currently in custody. During media coverage of

purchase/own a gun in the U.S. from 18 to 21 • Requiring universal background checks on all gun purchases • Banning “straw purchases” of guns (i.e., someone buying a gun in their name and giving it to someone else)

both of these incidents, reporters from both domestic and foreign news outlets had one question for police officers, politicians and private citizens alike. That is, why do mass shootings seem to occur again and again in the United States of America? Respondents talked all around the reasons – everything from defending the constitutional right to bear arms; to a person being allowed to act in whatever fashion they choose; to simply having a bad hair day. Not a single person pointed to easy access to guns as being part of the problem, let

alone the problem itself. The Gun Violence Archive, a U.S.-based independent data collection organization, defines a “mass shooting” as four or more persons being wounded or murdered at the same time with a firearm. So does that mean that three or fewer people shot is a tea party? I think not. Since the start of 2022 to date, records show that there have been 213 mass shootings in the United States, more than any other country in the world. Compare that to 8 mass shootings in France since the beginning of the 21st Century. We

seem to commemorate these atrocities with their own brand of dysfunctional folklore, and speak of them in hindsight like others would observe a national holiday – Columbine, Sandy Hook, Las Vegas, Buffalo, Uvalde – unfortunately, the list continues to grow. As President Joe Biden left Uvalde, TX a few days after the mass shooting there, local people who had gathered yelled out to the president, “Do something!” The “somethings” that have been bandied about include: • Raising the legal age to

Unfortunately, none of these tactics address the inconvenient truth that guns are NOT a necessity or essential to daily life in our country, contrary to the implications of our Constitution – far from it. However, until we face down the self-imposed psychological brick wall mindset we nurture as a nation about guns, nothing positive or productive can be achieved. We might as well change the words to our national anthem to what we have indeed become. We are NOT (if we ever were) “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Instead, we have morphed into “the land of the trigger-happy and the home of the deranged.” Only in America…

We hear you

Join us for a free breakfast to share your voice

By: Diane Beckley Milner Memory loss is not a normal part of aging To see signs of memory loss in a loved one is a difficult situation for thousands of Wisconsin families. In the black community we have the utmost respect for our elders and it’s hard for an adult child to talk with their parent or grandparent if they see signs of memory loss. As we celebrate Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness in June, we know black Americans are twice as likely as whites to develop Alzheimer’s or dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a free breakfast the month to discuss overcoming the stigma around dementia in the black community. Dementia is not a normal part of aging and it will not go away on its own with time. As a previous caregiver for my mother, it was important for me to be

prepared for the progression of the disease and how it was going to impact our lives. Why it falls to the bottom of the list I talk with people every day about services provided by the Alzheimer’s Association and our partners in the community. Many times, people just aren’t able to take advantage of services. Tell me if you can see yourself in any of these:

with someone at the Alzheimer’s Association; at least one conversation. This time could help open up a world of resources which can fit into your busy life. Education, support, funds from grants and knowledge could be the difference in making it a good day or a bad day in your life with your loved one. Black women, it’s time to step into your soft era When it comes to taking a break or doing the bare minimum, black women all over are not familiar with that concept or lifestyle; and it’s because, unfortunately, we were not given the opportunity to do so. For centuries, black women have had to be the butt of everyone’s jokes, the strong and hardworking ones, the ones who have to accept the worst of the worst, and the ones who have to do 10 times more to get a fraction of love, freedom and acceptance from the world. And after all of this, what are we left with? Sickness, diseases, high blood pressure, stress that ages you immensely, and even early death. We can no longer do this, black women; it’s killing us, literally. Yes, our mothers, grandmothers and ancestors were strong, independent and hardworking; but it cost them their life, freedom and happiness. It’s 2022 and it’s time for us to step into our soft era, our soft life because all of this hard work and weight of the world being on our backs is definitely making our black 'crack'. What is a soft life and why is it so important? If you’ve been on social media within the last year and you follow the right An HTGroup, LLC Publication

people, all over you’ll see people on the internet talking about how they want a “soft life” or it’s their time to live in ‘black girl luxury'. As redundant as it is now and somewhat overwhelming to see all day, every day, it’s definitely something that more lack women need to tap into. A soft life is exactly what it says: a soft life. It’s not allowing stress from work and others to consume you. It’s taking breaks when they’re needed and not working yourself to the bone. It’s limiting your interactions with negativity and changing your views in life to where you reap more benefits. A soft life is making sure to take care of yourself first (however that looks for you) before you pour into anything else. Living a soft life is so important because it allows you to be a healthier version of yourself. Consuming and interacting with so much negativity, stressing yourself out and having the weight of the universe on your shoulders not only ages you early, it can also cause serious health conditions and deteriorate your body. How stress affects your fu-

ture and ages you faster According to this statement made by Andrea King Collier sourced from the Centers for Disease Control, she noted that black women have a life expectancy that is 3 years shorter than white women and some causes for this is due to stress. Black women internalize stress differently than other races and life stressors are responsible for faster biological aging in black women. When stress starts to show on your body, it will show on your face. Wrinkles will begin to appear and you’ll be wondering why because technically you’re too young to be experiencing them. You’ll have bags under your eyes that make you look extremely tired (which you probably are), you’ll experience acne and dry skin, your hair will start graying and your teeth can start decaying. Constant stress will have you being 45 years old but look as if you

are in your 70s. So if stress doesn’t kill you, it will surely age you. The health benefits of slowing down and taking a breather To say that you can completely eliminate stress from your life forever would be a bigger lie than all of the nonsense men and women have told you in the past to try to get over (you know what I’m talking about). You can’t get rid of all of life’s stresses because life is going to stress you out, one way or another; but how you handle stress is important. Slowing down and taking a breather can save your life. It can lower your risk of developing conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Managing stress better can stop you from aging so fast and having you look older than you really are, which could raise your confidence. Limiting and managing what stresses you out can make you feel physically better, freer and lighter. Five ways you can start stepping into your soft era 1. Slow down, life is not a race. Slowing down will allow you to breathe better and handle situations with a clearer mind.

2. Rest. Slowing down includes stopping fully and resting. Sleep more, relax more, and be comfortable with doing nothing every once in a while. 3. Eat better. Health is wealth, and you already know eating healthier and being more mindful of what you consume will make you feel better and look better. 4. Say no. It’s okay to put yourself first and say no. If it’s something you do not want to do for someone else, then say no. If someone is treating you poorly and you don’t like it, say no and if they continue, remove them, choose you. 5. Be a damsel in distress. Black women: ask for help or accept help when it’s being offered. You can not do everything, allow someone else to step in so you can take a step back. Treating yourself as much as you can (without putting yourself in debt or trying to keep up with an image) and being true to yourself are also ways to step into your soft era. It’s time to prioritize you because you deserve that and so much more, black women; so step into a new you and a new life. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com
