City leader Kalan R. Haywood announces candidacy for Wisconsin 16th assembly district During an uprising of young people across the country, Milwaukee’s own Kalan R. Haywood announced today that he will step forward and declares his candidacy for the state assembly. “Our future is no longer at the mercy of stale politics and self-serving solutions,” said Haywood. “Together we must connect the wisdom of our elders and the zeal and innovation of our young people to move the needle forward for the 16th District.

It is in our hands, we will take quick, measured, and decisive action for the good of the people. Our time is now. The future that is repeatedly spoken of is here.” Born, raised, and educated in the 16th District, Haywood is a familiar face within Milwaukee’s political arena and has long been in the community doing the work. Serving as Milwaukee’s Youth Council President from 20152017, Haywood worked with the City of Milwaukee’s Community Development

Municipal Court to create a Youth Court charged with reducing recidivism, encouraging positive behavior, and empowering young people.

Kalan R. Haywood Block Grant Office where he led the process that allocated funding for programs that focused on youth employment and education. Haywood was a catalyst in developing the Milwaukee Public School’s, “MPS Cares” and the “#No

Being Frank There is a saying, “One step forward, three back.” It seems as if the African American community is about to do this very thing. The bizarre part about African Americans doing this is that they have done it before over the same issue. The issue is the movie Super Fly. In the early 70’s African Americans were still angry from the 1960’s and were poised to do something about their plight in the USA. Hollywood released Super Fly and everything changed. After the powerful African American response to Black Panther, Hollywood is attempting to do the same in 2018. The question is, “Will the African American community fall for the foolishness?” The original Sig Shore production of Super Fly was a masterpiece. Critics will bash the impact on the community but Super Fly was just plain cool. Ron O’Neal’s portrayal of "Priest" in the movie was a masterpiece of acting. The sound score done by Curtis Mayfield was brilliant. The acting, writing and music are what made Super Fly so devastating to the African American community. I once heard a man say, “Black men went into the movie theaters to see Super Fly with Afros and came out with perms.” This statement sums up the impact of the movie on the African American community. I have listened to the Super Fly soundtrack. The song No Thing On Me is a powerful attack on drug use. The lyrics tell people to enjoy a natural high so you can see things as they are. No Thing on Me should be an anthem

Super foolishness tions are ones all African Americans should be asking. There is a chance that African Americans will go see the 2018 Super Fly and come out conscious about the society they live in. There is a greater chance African Americans will go into the theater and be enthralled into oblivion by the cars, women and black men chasing the mythical “Big Score.” I will go on record stating: If the African American communi-

used today to get people of all races to kick drug habits. There are good points about the original Super Fly but they are outweighed by the negative cultural impact. Super Fly made the hustling and drug scene look wonderful. In the words of Christian motivational speaker Ruby Wray, a woman who lived during the release of the original Super Fly, “Almost every black man I knew wanted to be like Priest. Even those who didn’t look like him, Ron O’Neal, tried to be him.” The after effects of Super Fly on the African American community were and are obvious. Progress on a social level stopped and it took almost a decade to shake off the cultural impact of Super Fly. Are African Americans going to fall for the Okie Doke again? Black Panther had African Americans on call. Many people started wearing African clothes again. Some African American females let go of hair weave and are growing their hair natural. It seems as if the African American community may

Kalan Haywood said that his goals are clear and defined. “There are a great number of issues affecting the 16th District and the greater Milwaukee area. But the time is now to narrow our focus, find new, innovative but also practical ways to address the high unemployment rate, the record high incarceration rate, and the ever-increasing education gap for our residents, but specifically for our young people. We must be agents of change, and we must be stewards of progress. Together we will breathe new life into the 16th District.”

be waking up. Will this shaking off of sleep be disrupted by a knock off of an original, almost fatal blow? Will the African American community allow Hollywood to send them back to sleep, possibly for the final time? The 2018 Super Fly screenplay was written by Alex Tse and directed by Director X. Tse is Chinese and X was born and raised in Canada. Why would these two people have the African American community's best interest in mind? How can these two people know what it is to be African American or know how African Americans think? Yes, X looks black and has directed music videos. Whoopee. If you look at any modern music video there is a high chance that it reeks of crass materialism. Materialism is what has driven the African American community insane. How can a Chinese man know how black people feel or think? It would be like me trying to write a movie about the Chinese Triads. This has me asking, “Why now, and why at all?” The previous ques-

ty goes back to sleep it will be for good. Total Forgiveness (Week 2) “Everyone thinks forgiveness is a lovely idea, until they need to forgive!” - C.S. Lewis As noted last week, this month this column is looking at “Forgiveness” highlighting a Spiritual Enrichment Women’s Retreat sponsored by Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Milwaukee. The overall theme was: “Godly Women Forgive Totally.” Pastor Brenda Kearney of Maranatha Christian Fellowship elaborated on the topic of: “How to Forgive Others… Totally.” This week, you will find a synopsis of her presentation. The concept of forgiveness is nothing new to us as

Christians. We have all done bad things, to ourselves and others; have sinned against God and we need His forgiveness. While we most certainly appreciate being forgiven, when the time rolls around for us to forgive somebody else for a wrong they committed against us, we sometimes, many times, all the time, have a difficult time extending forgiveness. Forgiving others may seem like a choice, and in one sense it is a choice, but God has been very clear about forgiveness. He has given us specific directions in His Word, all of which can be summed up by this: FORGIVE! Total forgiveness means totally… Full forgiveness has hap-

pened when there is a total cessation of negative feelings toward the offender; and also proof of total forgiveness takes place when we sincerely petition the Father to let those who have hurt us off the hook…even if they have hurt not only us, but also those close to us.

son does not deserve forgiveness; • The offender doesn’t apologize or we believe the apology isn’t sincere; • We wait for the wrongdoer to become a right-doer; or • We fool ourselves into thinking we have already forgiven.

Why people don’t forgive: • We lack experience and expertise; • We’re angry; we’re afraid of being hurt again; • We’ve grown comfortable with the victim role; • Our culture doesn’t emphasize forgiveness; • We don’t want to admit that we were hurt; • Our egos get in the way; • We think the other per-

MPS celebrates 2018 valedictorians and salutatorians

Wearing caps and gowns in a rainbow of colors, top graduates from high schools across MPS were honored for their impressive academic accomplishments by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors at the Board's May meeting. Parents and family members were on hand to show their pride in their students. More than 75 students were honored, a number that reflects multiple valedictorians – as many as twelve – at some schools. "Receiving the esteemed distinction as valedictorian or salutatorian is something that takes incredible persistence, and these students have truly earned this honor," said MPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Keith Posley. "We applaud our graduates as they head out to universities here in Milwaukee and all across the U.S. They are the future of this city and our country." Valedictorians and salutatorians from the MPS Class of 2018 are heading to diverse destinations that include Alverno College, Grand Canyon University, Marquette University, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Northwestern University, Tennessee Tech, University of Iowa, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Uni-

Have fun in the sun this summer without compromising your health By: Priscilla Q. Williams, RN As you and your family prepare to pull out the grill this summer, please don’t forget one important thing, your health. I remember the years as an emergency room nurse and seeing all the patients come in the ER with high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels due to the holiday eating. I want to share with you five ways you can stay healthy during the summer. I will also give you a snapshot of a summer meal guide, so you don’t pack on the pounds. #1 Stay hydrated While this is the perfect time to have fun in the sun, it’s also important to remember that being in the sun for long periods of time can definitely dehydrate you. Therefore, it is extremely important to increase your water intake and decrease your sugar, caffeine, and alcohol intake. I know you may be thinking this is time for you to grab an ice-cold beer or a glass of wine with your meal but limit how many beers or glasses of wine you have. Increase

your water and add fruit to enhance the taste. Also pay attention to when your body does not have enough fluids and recognize signs of dehydration (dry skin, fatigue, cracked lips, fast heart rate, headache, and dizziness). #2 Decrease your sodium intake As I mentioned earlier, during the summer is when people end up in the emergency room with heart attack and stroke-like symptoms. This is the time to pay close attention to your plate. Watch the sodium in the barbecue sauce, baked beans, and the seasonings you are sprinkling on your food.

ERIC VON

BROADCAST FELLOWSHIP The Eric Von Broadcast Fellowship provides funding for a year-long fellowship to a recent college graduate who will receive paid experience to begin building a successful career in broadcast journalism.

I know a big pot of greens with smoked meat sounds nice but try some other healthy alternatives. I recently went to a barbecue and instead of eating what everyone else ate, I had grilled fish and vegetables. It was so delicious that my friends wanted some of my food because it looked so tasty. So, this summer try some grilled vegetables, seafood, and even grilled fruit instead of the barbeque ribs. #3 Stay active This is not the time to get lazy and sleep all day. I know most people are wanting to catch up on rest but this is the ultimate time to celebrate by getting active. Unbelievably it doesn’t take long to pack on pounds. After a few pieces of cake or a bowl of banana pudding the fat will attach itself. This summer it would be beneficial to find a work-

out class, or you and some friends go for a walk on the beach. The more active you are, the fewer pounds you will pack on. #4 Don’t forget the sun screen Ignore the myths that black people don’t need sunscreen. Damaging UV rays can penetrate all types of skin, regardless of your ethnicity. While skin cancer rates are significantly lower in African Americans and Hispanics than in Caucasians, low risk doesn’t mean no risk. So, make sure if you hit the beach this summer you have on protection. According to the American Academy of Dermatology it’s recommended to apply a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher and reapply it every two hours or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. #5 Rock your favorite pair of shades Protecting your eyes is just as important as protecting your skin. Exposing your eyes directly to sunlight can damage your retina. Last year I moved to Florida, known as the sunshine state, and all I can say is the sun does a body good. However, the sun didn’t treat my

eyes so well because I didn’t wear shades as recommended. This caused me to have a detached retina and as a result I had to have emergency eye surgery. This was no fun at all, and now I wear my sunglasses faithfully and even have a pair of transitional lens. According to the National Eye Institute the sun’s rays contain ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and it is this that causes damage to skin and eyes. The rays from the sun can damage different parts of the eye including the retina, the lens and the cornea. Overall, this summer don’t let your guards down and be very conscious of what you eat, drink and how you protect your body. These tips you may be aware of but the reality is there are so many people who disregard the recommendation of experts. Be safe and be healthy!

MKEing Coffee is making a difference MKEing Coffee (pronounced Making Coffee) is a coffee roasting company and brand started by cofounders Chad Johnson and Jarod Cronk. MKEing Coffee was established to use profit margin from coffee to improve economic and employment opportunities in Milwaukee’s Central City. They are being mentored by Stone Creek Coffee and currently roasting out of Stone Creek’s factory. Johnson said that the collaborations they have started with schools, businesses and other organizations have helped him understand that coffee brings people together and changes lives! MKEing Coffee’s café on 55th and North Avenue has become a popular meeting place. Their unique roasts are available to purchase in the café, sold online, supplied in bulk to wholesale customers, and offered as a private label option for fundraisers, charitable organizations and businesses who want their name on a bag of coffee. Johnson said when MKEing Coffee supplies over 1,000 pounds of coffee per month on a consistent basis, it plans
