Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

When will you wake up? There have been events in thepastfewyearsthatshould have awakened the African American community. The police brutality and murders should have been a definite wake-up call. The flagrant proliferation of arms by Caucasian people that hints of a race war. Yet, African Americans are ignoring or downplaying these situations. Why? Maybe because the NBA Playoffs are taking place. I have to once again ask, “African American people, when will you wake up?” Marching in the streets and singing church hymns has not cut it for African Americans in the USA. These tactics do make preachers and so - called activists famous, but do little for the African American community. The violence directed towards African Americans is escalating in its levels. The killing spree conducted by Peyton Gendron in Buffalo, NY was a clear sign of this. Any white person in the USA is being given carte blanche access to commit murder in the African American com-

munity. Why? Many African Americans are too caught up eating chicken wings and watching pro sports to care. Other African Americans are too mind-wiped via societal programming to even know what is happening in the USA. African Americans, wake up. African American people in Wisconsin should have felt shivers when the shooting in Buffalo went down. The Kyle Rittenhouse fiasco of a few years back could have ended in a similar blood bath. In both incidents you have Caucasian teens who have access to high powered weapons. Both went out of their way to be someplace where they had no right to be. Rittenhouse drove to Kenosha from Illinois. Gendron drove 200 miles to Buffalo to do his deed. African Americanpeople, doyousee the pattern here? While you smokeandpoppillsthinking you are in a party, the next generation of Caucasians is planning your funeral.

example of the mind numbness that pervades the African American community. It is a mind numbness that is going to get a lot of African Americans killed.

African American people have been savaged by police and other legal authorities in the USA since day one. African Americans now have to acknowledge the fact that the police may be the least of their worries, There is a large number of Caucasian males who are flocking to the banner of white supremacist movements in the USA. While African Americans are teaching their children how to shoot three’s, Caucasians are teaching their children to shoot AR-15’s. African American preachers are in the pulpit talking about paying tithes and cracking jokes or saying pray. The Ku Klux Klan is talking about preserving the white Christian way of life. This is just one

There is one major reason why Caucasian people feel like they can do whatever they want including kill African Americans. African Americans seem to enjoy killing each other. The crazy shootings that take place in the African American community are always on the news. Other races watch the news and figure, “Hey, African Americans like dying so whynotgetsometargetpractice in?” African American self-hate has progressed to thepointwheretheyseeeach other as targets, not assets. I could beat a dead horse and say the music industry has enhanced this self-hate, but you already know this. With the cheap way African Americans spend their lives, is there any wonder a race that hates them is planning their demise?

Wake up, African Americans. Start understanding where you are. All the voting, praying, marching and hoping hasn’t changed the hostile environment you live in. The USA was designed by Caucasians for Caucasians. No amount of legislation is going to change this. African Americans need to stop thinking they can buy respect or equality in the USA. No one respects a person who has no respect for themselves or their family. African Americans need to wake up and show each other respect and then demand it from every other race. The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

The greatest joys of fatherhood (Part 1) Enjoy the reflections that were printed several years ago and the men who still enjoy them. What is the meaning of fatherhood? At a workshop at the Urban Institute, this definition of fatherhood was given: "A man becomes a father when he has his first child; this status is fixed, such that, once a man becomes a father, he is always a father. He maysubsequentlyhavemore children, or his responsibilitiesandactivitiesmaychange due to divorce, or children leaving home, or for other reasons, but he is always a father. Fatherhood, then, is a status attained by having a child and is irrevocable. In the contemporary research literature, the term fatherhood is used interchangeably with the term fathering which includes, beyond the procreative act itself, all the childrearing roles, activities, duties, and responsibilities that fathers are expected to perform and fulfill. Furthermore, whilethesedefinitions once implied biological fathers only, with the rapid changes in the family structure they came to include www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

non-biological fathers as well. We follow the common practiceintheresearchliterature and use "fatherhood" to includechildrearing responsibilities and fathering activities as well, regardless of whether they are carried out by biological or non-biological fathers." This month in celebration of fatherhood, this writer asked several fathers to answer the question: “What have been the greatest joys of fatherhood?” The reflections note the articles were submitted several years ago as a joy to send again! Reflections on fatherhood

Dad “Charles” My greatest joy of fatherhood has been watching my children live, grow, and learnresponsibility.Ilovemy children. I am always their “Dad” and therefore, I will always be there for them.

my children to ride a bike; driving or walking them to school; and God’s blessings for being able to provide for them, all bring me tremendous joy. Now that my son is a young man, I enjoy having those one-on-one conversations with him about life. My daughter has her questions too and I am happy to give her my listening ear and give herfatherlyandgodlyadvice. If I had to state my ultimate joy of being a father…it has beensharingtheloveofJesus with my children. In turn, my children bring me joy when they tell me: “I love you daddy” and when they say those simple, but extremely meaningful words: “thank you.” I cannot describe how grateful I am to God for blessing me and guiding me to be a God-fearing father and for blessing me with my two beautiful children.

My children, the love of my life! Dad “Marc” When I think about my greatest joys of fatherhood, “When a father gives to his I must first thank God for son, both laugh; blessing me with a son and when a son gives to his fadaughter. I thank God for ther, both cry.” God’s grace and mercy, the WilliamShakespeare gift of forgiveness and restoration. I could/should have lost my life to the streets, Next week: Continuation but God had other plans of previous years of father for me. When I think about reflections those times when I taught

The Advantages of Planning Ahead

T

he idea of planning ahead is simple. Those who plan ahead can be assured that, both you and your loved ones can benefit, when funeral arrangements are made well ahead of need. It’s beneficial to include your immediate family while planning, ensuring those left behind are aware of your wishes and able to experience a meaningful funeral. Advanced planning will also help your loved ones have the needed time to celebrate your life without the multiple distractions of decision making while mourning. By discussing your plans in advance, you can take all the time necessary to provide and decide your desires, discuss various payment options, as well as express your heartfelt wishes and select a funeral that’s designed specifically for you. For more information on pre-planning feel free to contact your local funeral service professional.

Remembering Children's Fest Day at Summerfest By Bobby Tanzilo This piece is exclusive to Milwaukee Recreation and cannot be reproduced elsewhere without permission. Since its earliest days, Summerfest has included young Milwaukeeans in its programming and in 2021, it collaboratedwithNorthwestern Mutual to create a massive overhaul of the children’s area at the Henry Maier Festival Park. For many years, the festival collaboratedwithMilwaukee Recreation, a department of Milwaukee Public Schools, to bring summer fun to Milwaukee children. For nine years, that was manifested in the annual Children’s Fest, which took place on the lakefront festival grounds in late July, before Summerfest brought the programming in-house and integrated it into the 11-day festival in late June and early July. “Withalltheethnicfestivals at the Summerfest grounds we felt that at least one day in

the summer should be dedicated just to children,” recalledMilwaukeeRecreation resource staffer Rick Knack. “(The goal was) to bring children from across the city to one place for a day of fun, games and attractions free of charge.” To use 1990 as an example, organizers–Milwaukee Recreation and the Metro Area Park and Recreation Departments, Milwaukee Safety Commision, Summerfest and WTMJ-TV, Channel 4 –expected25,000attendees, along with another 600 to 1,000 who would attend the Aug. 1 event via Milwaukee Public Schools. Gates opened at 10 a.m., for what was planned to be, “free, high quality, safe and wholesomerecreationaland educationalactivitiesforchildren 4-12 years of age from Southeastern Wisconsin communities and participating agencies at the Henry W. Maier Festival Park.” There would be active games, like bowling, foursquare, scooterridesandtwo

that are new to me: Doghouse and Earthball. In addition, there would be an array of carnival games with a wide variety of prizes, and thanks to a surviving receipt, weknowthathundreds and hundreds of those prizeswereordered,including11 gross (a gross is 144) flutes, 15 gross Chinese yoyos, 20 gross ball and jacks, 30 gross super balls, 10 gross kazoos, 120dozenbubblesandmuch more. There were going to be appearances by familiar sports mascots, ice sculpting (in July!), a soccer demonstration, face painting and a LEGO display, and no fewer than 12,000 free half-pints of milk were to be distributed. Performers included the Children’s Theater of Wauwatosa, Friends of Mime Theater, Travelcast Players, Professor Foolzum Magic Show, The Fabulous Feno, Kids Korps, Betty Salamun’s Dance Circus, West Bend Dance Tumbling Troupe, B-Boys Dance Ensemble, Willy Y’s Workout for Kids,

Ron Fable and Kathie Magic Show,SunshineGeneration, Accompany of Kids, David Drake, Chuck E. Cheese and Friends and Milwaukee Recreation’s Trailer Theatre. Performances would take place on stages near the Pavilion Tent (which housed the exhibits), the ethnic village (where the Trailer Theater set up), at the front and back of the central fountain area, in the lost children area, the sports area, at the Miller Gazebo, the Rainbow Tent Stage, the Children’s Stage and on the Pabst and Miller Stages. There were also safety displays including a race car from Arie Luyendyke, Excalibur and Wally Rank and a Coast Guard helicopter, North Shore Fire Safety Home, Safety Tom and Big Boy Manners. The event was a popular one, Knack recalled, “particularly because we closed down our citywide playground program for the day so all the staff could work the games and attractions and all

the children who would usually be at those playgrounds were bused to the Summerfest grounds to participate. “I remember the look of excitement and the smiles on the faces of the children,” he says. “But I most remember the carnival games area where most of the playground staff worked that day. They ran the games and gave out candy and prizes to the kids, while my job was to make sure that any game that ran low on prizes was supplied with more. “I did a lot of running around to accomplish that but I couldn't help but marvel at how the staff ran those games for 4-5 hours on a hot summer day and all the while gave smiles and encouragement to the kids playing the games. Those were some dedicated people.” According to former Milwaukee Recreation director Mike Magulski, the relationship between Milwaukee Recreation and Summerfest was a long one and went back much earlier than the debut of Children’s Fest Day. “WhenSummerfestmoved to the original grounds in 1971, we were asked if we could participate in offering some type ofprogramming,” he recalls. “We provided supervision in the children's play area and staged performances with the children's summertheatermobileunit.” In 1973, as an example of the partnership, Milwaukee Recreation brought its Enviro-Mobile and Starwagon to the grounds for the entire run of the festival and also ran multiple shows each day (Continued on pg. 11)

UR HISTORY

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES

Black Pride: Here are 5 black LGBTQ pioneers to know June is the recognition of LGBTQ History Month. It is a subject is schools not as wellcoveredasblackHistory Month, it is still a history that is very rich and diverse. Today, peoplelikeLaverne Cox, Andrea Jenkins, Phill Wilson and Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot are bringing increased visibility as openly LGBTQ, high-profile black leaders. Still, activists say teachings have fallen short in educating students about the historical black LGBTQ figures who paved the way for these achievements. In recognition of LGBTQ History Month, professors and activists reflected on the seldom-told stories of black LGBTQ trailblazers and their contributions to American history.

Lucy Hicks Anderson (1886-1954) Transgender pioneer for marriage equality Before Christine Jorgensen, often recognized as America’s first prominent trans woman, there was Lucy Hicks Anderson. She preceded Jorgensen’s notoriety when stories of her trans identity made news in the early 20th century, said C. Riley Snorton, a professor of English and gender and sexuality studies at the University of Chicago, who wrote about Anderson and the erasure of Black transsexual narratives in the book “Black on Both Sides: A Racial History of Trans Identity.” After marrying a soldier in Oxnard, CA., in 1944, local authorities discovered that Andersonwasassignedmale at birth and the couple was chargedwithperjury.Taking a stand in court, Anderson

reportedly said, “I defy any doctor in the world to prove that I am not a woman. I havelived, dressed, actedjust like what I am, a woman.” Instead of prison time, Andersonandherhusbandwere placed on 10 years of probation. Anderson was also ordered to refrain from wearingclothesmadeforwomen, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Years later, thecouplewascharged again — this time for fraud after Anderson received federal money reserved for military spouses. Both went to prison and were banned from Oxnard upon release. The couple then moved to Los Angeles, where Anderson lived for the remainder of her life.

Gladys Bentley (1907-1960) Blues singer, pianist and drag king pioneer Black arts and culture blossomed during the Harlem Renaissance, but an often overlooked aspect of the era was its queer nightlife enclaves and the influence of blacklesbianandtransgender blues.Asalesbianbluessinger,pianistandcross-dressing performer, Gladys Bentley was considered “Harlem’s most famous lesbian,” often singing her own raunchy lyrics to popular tunes and performing in her signature top hat and tuxedo. In the 1930s, Bentley headlined at Harlem’s Ubangi Club, where she was backed up by a chorus line of drag queens. “She also donned male artifice and attire and performed as a drag king in Harry’s Clam House in New York in the 1920s,” Snorton said. “She was like, coldblooded, the best.” Accord-

ing to the New York Times, Bentley was one of the bestknown Black entertainers in the country. Toward the end of her life, Bentley married a man, denied that she was gay and expressed regret for her drag performances, Story said, “but that, to me, was no doubt from the ensuing pressure of homophobia and all of those things.”

Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) Gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin is recognized as one of the key leaders of the civil rights movement. He advised Dr. King onnonviolenttactics, helped plan the Montgomery, AL., bus boycott and was a chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. But as an openlygayman,Rustinfaced discrimination of his own while fighting for the rights of others. In January 1953, he was arrested on a “morals charge” after police officers caught him engaged with two other men in a parked car in Pasadena, CA. The conviction, which was often used to target gay people, forced Rustin to register as a sex offender andnearlyderailedhiscareer as a civil rights activist. “He was a prominent gay man during the civil rights movement when there was no space to talk about lesbian and gay issues,” said Karsonya Whitehead, an associate professor of communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland. For years, Rustin’s arrest sidelined him in the civil rights movement. He struggled to find work and was pushed out of Dr. King’s

inner circle. Then, in 1963, woman could make history. Rustin’slongtime mentorappointed him as a key organizer of the March on Washington. Following the success of the march, Rustin continued to advocate for civil rights, and he brought the AIDS crisis to the NAACP’s attention in an effort to encourage others to “come out” and live their truths.

Pauli Murray (1910-1985) Lawyer, scholar and women’s rights activist Lawyer and activist Pauli Murray is widely credited for building the legal frameworks that paved the way for the civil rights and women’s rights movements. Both the late Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Thurgood Marshall said they were influenced by Murray’s arguments on race and gender. In particular, Marshall hailed Murray’s 700-page summary of racism in state law as “the bible” of Brown v. Board of Education. And Murray was also considered instrumental in arguing for the 14th Amendment’s equal protectionclause, whichstated discrimination based on sex is unconstitutional. Murray was an “architect of civil rights legislation and civil rights victories who was queer,” Hazzard said, “and if she was alive to day, might even identify as transgender.” According to the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice, Murray self-described as a “he/she personality” earlier in life andalsoattemptedtoreceive gender-affirminghealthcare, including hormone therapy, but was repeatedly denied. Pauli Murray applied to be a Supreme Court justice in 1971. 50 years later, a black

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (1940-present) Transgender rights activist Throughout her lifetime, transgender activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy has stood at the forefront of a wide range of causes — many of which were inspired by her own personal challenges. Early in her life, she said, she experienced homelessness, incarcerationandengagedin sex work to survive. Griffin-Gracy is also considered a prominent figure in the Stonewall riots. She was present the night police raided the Stonewall Inn on June 27, 1969, in New York, whichpromptedthedemonstrations, andwasreportedly struck on the head by police and taken into custody. While in prison, an officer broke her jaw, she later said. After the riots, Griffin-Gracy focused her efforts on working with trans womenwhowereincarcerated, homeless or battling addiction. ”Her work has been about specifically uplifting Black trans women,” Story said, “and really giving them teachingtoolsaroundhowto deal with incarceration, police brutality.
