Virtually the entire second shift of officers assigned to the Community Outreach Division of the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) participated in “Coffee with A Cop,” the first of a series of six neighborhood events to be held throughout the city this summer. Milwaukee Urban League hosts 2017 Black and White Ball
The 32nd Annual Black and White Ball, held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in downtown Milwaukee, proved to be another successful fundraiser for the Milwaukee Urban League. This year, the event raised more than $300,000 and included a special appeal to provide laptop computers for high achieving high school students. Money raised during this signature annual fundraiser goes to support the League's vital programs in the areas of youth and education; youth workforce development; and economic development. Several corporations presented special gifts at the ball, including Cardinal Stritch University, which presented their first-ever donation to the League with a check for $25,000. Democratic candidate for Milwaukee County Sheriff, Earnell Lucas, makes first public appearance Earnell Lucas, a Milwaukee native and Democratic candidate for Milwaukee County Sheriff, made his first public appearance June 7 at the Milwaukee Press Club. Lucas spent 25 years with the Milwaukee Police Department, rising to the rank of captain before he survived being shot in the head in the line of duty. He has served as Vice President of Security and Facility Management for Major League Baseball for the past 15 years.

Being Frank The joy of life is something everyone is supposed to experience. The bliss of waking up and inhaling air is a gift. In the world today there are billions of people who enjoy the gift of life. It seems as if many in the USA are finding reasons to not enjoy life but to die. When a child is born into the world, he or she is supposed to have an unlimited potential for living. A child sees the world through unrestricted eyes for the first few years of life. Many people have forgotten the view a child has because they have become corrupted. The corruption is not necessarily physical but mental. Like a dying

The habits many adopt are some of the ways people are destroying themselves. Many will say they love life, yet their actions say differently. I am not talking about the thrill seeker who parachutes out a plane. I refer to the teen that joins a street gang. Another is the person who eats until they resemble bovine creatures. The ghetto is nothing new to the world. There are ghettoes and 'hoods in every country on the planet. The poverty of the community does not have to create a poverty of mind. It seems as if the people who live in poverty make decisions that keep them speeding towards death. There are other options than gangs, drugs and ignorance. Yet these are the choices many make. Why? These people have lost a positive reason to live. Hence these people are living to die. Death living is not restricted to the poor. In the USA the rich have similar death wishes. The difference is rich people kill themselves with panache. In the end the results are the same. If you do not believe me look at the past history of the entertainment field. How many celebrities or mega rich people have overdosed, committed crimes or checked into rehab facilities over the past 50 years? You have to find a reason to live. To get you going, the reason can be something outside yourself. Find a job you enjoy or a hobby. If possible find a friend or love interest that has a positive impact on you. Use these outside sources to build up the inner you. Once you have done this, then find a reason inside yourself. Once your reason to live comes from inside yourself you will make better decisions. The decisions we make are the deciding factors of our lives. No longer do we have the time to be blissfully ignorant of our choices. The world is at a crux. The people living in it will be the deciding factor on whether the world becomes a better or worse place. We already see the results of the negative choices: crime, suicide, and drug usage. Why not choose something different? After all, the cemetery will always be there waiting for you so you don’t have to hurry. National Awareness Month (part 3): National Men’s Health There is an ongoing, increasing and predominantly silent crisis in the health and well-being of men. Due to a lack of awareness, poor health education, and culturally induced behavior patterns in their work and personal lives, men's health and well-being are deteriorating steadily. The men's health crisis is seen most dramatically in mortality figures. In 1920, the life expectancy of males and females was roughly the same. Since that time and, increasingly, in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, the life expectancy for men has dropped in comparison with that of women, with women outliving men by more than 5 years. Over the last 30 years, the ratio of male mortality over female mortality has increased in every age category. In addition, consider these stats: • Men have a higher death rate for most of the leading causes of death: o Heart disease o Cancer o Chronic lower respiratory disease o Diabetes
o Alzheimer’s o Homicide o HIV infection • Men are also victims of over 92 percent of workplace deaths. • Depression in men is undiagnosed contributing to the fact that men are 4 times as likely to commit suicide. June 12-18, 2017 is recognized as Men’s Health Week. The goal of Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Men’s Health Week encourages men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. Since its inception, the response has been overwhelming with hundreds of awareness activities in the United States and around the globe. Join the Men's Health Network in celebrating Men’s Health this month. Their mission is to reach men, boys, and their families where they live, work, play, and pray with health prevention messages and tools, screening pro-

William Ira Gore, Jr.,
was born in Conway, South Carolina. William received his formal education from Booker T. Washington High School, in Columbia, South Carolina. He later earned a bachelor of science degree from Morehouse College in 1954. In July 1954, William enlisted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on July 17, 1956. He would later earn a masters in social work (MSW) from Atlanta University School of Social Work. Throughout most of his life, William Gore was employed by Milwaukee County. In 1988, he retired from the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex as Director of Psychiatric Social Services. At the time of his retirement an ad was placed by his colleagues at the County with the headline, “Who Said There Are No Heroes Anymore?” As a 33rd Degree Prince Hall Mason, he interacted with countless individuals that acknowledged his willingness to share his wisdom and encouragement. As a Director and Vice Chairman of Columbia Savings and Loan, Gore worked diligently to provide oversight for the oldest African American financial institution in the city of Milwaukee. William Ira Gore departed this life on Saturday, May 27, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ira Gore, Sr. and Frances Gore. He leaves to cherish his memory lifelong friend and wife, Dorothy B. Gore; three daughters, Patricia-Ann HopkinsSolone (George) of Columbia, South Carolina; Cecelia Iris Gore (Randy Bryant) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Celeste Irene Gore; one granddaughter, Emmanuelle India Haye of Highland Park, Illinois; one sister, Annie Mae Gore of Columbia, South Carolina; cousins, Joseph Darby (Mary), Jason Darby (Cherisse), Jeremy Darby (Ashley) all of South Carolina; and a host of relatives and friends. Clearly, William Ira Gore, Jr., took the high road. And for that he is loved! So, the reality is, there are heroes and William I. Gore is one of them!

Many MPS schools to follow Early Start calendar this fall Milwaukee Public Schools is excited to launch a new schedule for the 2017-18 school year designed to help our students succeed. All high schools, middle schools and some elementary schools will follow an Early Start Calendar, with school beginning on August 14. A complete list of schools following the Early Start Calendar can be found at http://mpsmke. com/earlystart. The Early Start Calendar serves several important purposes. Scholarships for Class of 2017 exceed $62 million
On Monday, June 12, 2017, Milwaukee Public Schools announced another record-breaking number of scholarship dollars offered to students. The Class of 2017 received an eye-popping total of $62,742,516 in scholarships, shattering last year's record of $51 million. This is the fifth straight year, dating back to 2012 ($17 million total) that scholarship offers have increased. "Congratulations to the Class of 2017 for breaking the record for scholarships raised. It takes hard work and determination by our scholarship winners to accomplish
what they have done. We know for many, they could not have accomplished such feats without the support of their parents, families, school counselors, teachers and administrators," said Dr. Darienne Driver, Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools. "We always have more work to do to close the achievement gap here in Milwaukee, but it is rare to have something so tangible, and this shows real progress," Driver said. "This type of work is vital to the success of Milwaukee's future work- and better preparing all stu- career and life is critical to force. The Class of 2017 is the first senior class to participate in GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). The TEAM GEAR UP grant, a seven-year federal grant worth more than $28 million (including match dollars), is at eight high schools: Audubon, Bay View, Bradley Tech, Hamilton, Madison, Marshall, MHSA and Vincent. An important component of the TEAM GEAR UP grant is the opportunity for MPS to create and solidify relationships with key business and community partners as well as to establish a pipeline to Wisconsin colleges and universities. Through TEAM GEAR UP, MPS has built strong partnerships with Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, Marquette University, Milwaukee Area Technical College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Dirty talk: Common bacteria hiding on your phone Your cell phone could be the reason for your next doctor visit. The item that you more than likely come in contact with the most has more germs per square inch than your toilet bowl. Just think about the places we put our cell phones: in the bathroom, cleavage, your gym bag under sweaty clothes and on the counter while you’re cooking raw food, to name a few. Your phone is at the mercy of whomever you let touch it. When you’re looking up that recipe, you also have food particles on it while you’re swiping away. Your little niece who’s so adorable, but picks her nose when you’re not looking, plays with your phone. Your phone is nasty, plain and simple. If you’re wondering why your face is breaking out or you’re randomly sick, look no further than your phone. Here are some bacteria to watch out for: Moraxella Moraxella isn’t as common as strep, but can be found on many phones. People with sinus issues such as sinusitis or post-nasal drip frequently have this bacteria on their phones.
Bacillus This environmental bacteria means that the phone has a lot of literal dirt on it. If you’ve been outside for long periods of time and have had your hands in a lot of dirt or earthy material then it’ll most likely show up on your phone. Streptococcus viridians Strep viridians comes from the mouth and throat. If you have a vulnerable immune system it can cause infections. You get strep viridians from touching your mouth after coughing or talking on the phone. Staphylococcus epidermidis Most people have a certain amount of staph on their skin by nature of their normal skin flora. This type of staph can get on your phone through talking on it or touching it. Staphylococcus aureus Typically found in the nose, staphylococcus aureus is typically harmless, but it can become a staph infection if you have a compromised immune system. Beware of wiping your nose for the sniffles or outright digging in your nose as this may spread this type of staph bacteria to

Be sure to grab a few of these because the screen will get dirty and have the same nasty effect as an unprotected phone screen if you don’t change it out regularly. The store “Five Below” sells packs of screen protectors for $5, so don’t waste a lot money by going to your phone carrier's store. 3. Buy a few microfiber cloths to wipe your screen off with. Using a paper towel or a rag aren’t the most effective because they leave behind smudges and lint at

The bathroom is probably the worst place you can bring your phone. The faucet, the lever on the toilet, toilet seat, the knob on the bathroom door and every other place is teeming with bacteria. Texting and talking on your phone in the bathroom is asking for germs to invade your system. A UK study found that one in six phones had fecal matter present on them.

Twelve summer safety tips for seniors
Prepare yourself or older friends and family members for the sweltering summer months The summertime is a time of fun and relaxation for most people. But for seniors, the heat and sun can be dangerous if the proper precautions aren't taken. Here are some great tips that the elderly, as well as their caregivers, can use to make sure they have a fun, safe summer. Stay hydrated Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration than younger people because they lose their ability to conserve water as they age. They also can become less aware of their thirst and have difficulty adjusting to temperature changes. Remember to drink water often, and be sure to pack some for those long summer drives. Dr. William Greenough, of Johns Hopkins Geriatric Center, says that caregivers should make sure seniors are drinking sweat replacement products (that contain salt and potassium) to replace water they lose during the summer. Talk to your doctor Check with your medical team to make sure any medications you are on won't be
affected by higher temperatures -- especially if you don't have air conditioning in your home. Some medications are less effective if stored at temperatures higher than room temperature (approximately 78 degrees Fahrenheit), and the last thing anyone wants is for a preventable medical condition to become aggravated due to high temperatures. Keep your cool Even small increases in temperature can shorten the life expectancy for seniors who are coping with chronic medical conditions.

If you are elderly, see if a younger neighbor -- perhaps even one of their kids -- can come by and check on you occasionally to make sure everything is all right. "As a result, they are more prone to heat stroke." If you (or an elderly loved one) start to feel any of these symptoms, ask for medical help and then get out of the heat, lie down and place ice packs on your body.
Rub on sunscreen and wear hats Everyone, young and old, should wear sunscreen when outdoors. The elderly especially need the extra sun protection to help keep them healthy. Caregivers, family and friends can help by gently reminding loved ones about applying sunscreen and helping to put it on when necessary. Hats are also a great idea, especially for those with light colored hair and those with only distant memories of a full head of hair.
