The greatest joys of fatherhood (Part 2) This month you enjoyed the “Greatest Joys of Fatherhood” that were printed several years ago that still a blessing printed for the fathers. Enjoy them! Despite the troubling statistics, there are fathers who are doing the right thing by their children. There are fathers who are supporting their children emotionally, financially and by their physical presence. This month we celebrate fatherhood. In continuation, this writer asked fathers to answer the question: “What have been the greatest joys of fatherhood.” Note: Their articles were submitted several years ago as a joy to send again! Reflections of fatherhood Dad “Gregory” When I realized I was going to be a father, I was

overjoyed because the doctor had said I might not be able to have children. I used to love to feel the baby kick in the belly. I’m the proud father of 3 by natural birth and 2 by adoption. The greatest joy I must say is watching them develop into productive children in both the kingdom of God and in the community. I enjoy when my children come to me for advice or to simply listen to them when they have problems. Before my mother died, she said she was proud of me because I was a good father even though I didn’t have a father figure in my own life. Since then, I’ve seen one graduate from college and in the ministry; another who loves his children; and another attending engineering school. The joy of fatherhood never stops. Every day there is something new. I thank God for blessing me with my children and for allowing me to be a father.

my girls, it made me become even more focused on being the best father I could be! Now that I am a grandfather, I am enjoying my grandchildren and being the best granddad, they have ever known! “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” - Sigmund Freud Next Week: Continuation of Previous Years of Father Reflections

January 6, 2021 revisited By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times After 233 years of being a sovereign nation and becoming possibly the most successful democracy in human history, the United States of America has prided itself in achieving a peaceful transition when power changes hands, regardless of politics. Democrats, Republican, or independents, you win some, you lose some; but the process of government goes on regardless. That tradition was threatened on January 6, 2021, as Congress gathered as prescribed at the U.S. Capitol to officially certify the Electoral College vote from the November 4, 2020 presidential election, in which Republican incumbent Donald Trump was bested by Democratic former Vice President Joe Biden. The margin of victory was more than 7-million popular votes, giving Biden 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232. A majority of 270 electoral votes is needed to win the presidency. As the saying goes, “Do the math.” Trump lacked 38 electoral votes to achieve the needed 270 minimum to retain the presidency; and was 74 electoral votes behind Biden. What ensued from election night culminated in a violent insurrection on January 6, 2021 that could have threatened democracy as we know it

The Advantages of Planning Ahead

T

he idea of planning ahead is simple. Those who plan ahead can be assured that, both you and your loved ones can benefit, when funeral arrangements are made well ahead of need.

Annie Meekins (upper photo) and Phyllis Diggins (lower photo) hold signs offering drive thru prayers at Bethesda Baptist Church. Every Thursday in June from 12-1 p.m., members of Bethesda Baptist Church offer free drive-thru intercessory prayers to the public in the church parking lot, 2909 North 20th Street. Rev. Cleavon Williams said drive-thru prayers for the public were a long-time tradition at Bethesda which he resumed after accepting a call to be pastor at Bethesda about three years ago. He said an average of about 20 cars have been stopping for prayers at the midway point of "drive-thru prayer month" this year. "All are welcome," he added.

It’s beneficial to include your immediate family while planning, ensuring those left behind are aware of your wishes and able to experience a meaningful funeral. Advanced planning will also help your loved ones have the needed time to celebrate your life without the multiple distractions of decision making while mourning. By discussing your plans in advance, you can take all the time necessary to provide and decide your desires, discuss various payment options, as well as express your heartfelt wishes and select a funeral that’s designed specifically for you. For more information on pre-planning feel free to contact your local funeral service professional.

Black dads matter It has long been known that father presence in the household is important for the positive well-being of families, neighborhoods, and youth. Dads who actively participate in the lives of their families provide a steady source of stability and support. The consequences of such support impact a whole host of child developmental outcomes, including behavior, academics, and health. Involved fathers are also more likely to engage in positive parenting behaviors like academic intervention and constructive discipline. Promoting responsible fatherhood, then, should be the focus of institutions as well as grassroots efforts in society. Involved fathers help create well-adjusted youth. What happens, however, when there are impediments to both the presence and participation of fathers in the lives of children, particularly black fathers? Conservatives often address this question by contending that black fathers are not adequately present and involved with their families. They push to create policies that encourage marriage among families, particularly black families, as a way to foster child well-being and success. The success sequence, for example, suggests that individuals are most likely to avoid poverty and be successful if they finish their education, obtain full-time employment, marry and then have children—in that order. The idea itself seems intuitive and positive. After all, proponents contend that this ordering would create more stable and successful black families. Critics, however, point out that the success sequence disregards the impediments that individual effort cannot always overcome. As Brian Alexander wrote in The Atlantic, it “conveniently frames structural inequalities (i.e. high unemployment, lack of education, racial discrimination, etc.) as matters of individual choice.”4 This is why removing barriers to structural equality is equally important to the success of families—especially black families. The share of black children born to single mothers has more than tripled from about 24 percent in 1960 to nearly 70 percent in 2018, indicating that black fathers are less likely to live in households with their children than fathers of other racAn HTGroup, LLC Publication

es. But it’s important to note the share of children in single-mother families among all races has risen dramatically since the 1960s. Moreover, we now know that among nonresidential fathers, black fathers are more involved than Hispanic dads and share more responsibilities and generally co-parent better than white or Hispanic nonresidential fathers. Still, nonresidential black fathers face myriad barriers to being a stable, consistent support to their children because of other systemic challenges that conservatives often overlook.

than non-Hispanic white men. Poor health is often symptomatic of poverty. Health, in turn, has an impact on sustained poverty. This cyclical relationship must be unpacked when identifying why poverty is predominantly the plight of certain marginalized people. Promoting responsible fatherhood is more important now than ever. The world is demanding positive change, and black fathers need to be at the helm.

Finally, the media plays a large role in how black fathers are viewed in society. There are many media myths that should be addressed and dispelled related to blacks in general and black dads in particular. For example, media reports or depictions often misrepresent black fathers as “absentee” dads who abandon their children by connecting non-marital births with parental involvement. Research tells us, however, that many black fathers are deeply engaged with their children, and physical separation is not always synonymous with lack of father involvement. According to sociologist Patricia Hill Collins, these “controlling images” shape people’s thinking about certain groups after being exposed to negative representations repeatedly. Left unchecked, they can make policy and lawmakers unsympathetic to

the plight of black dads. Why do these things matter? Because it is not enough to discuss black fatherhood without also understanding the context within which black men operate. Even so, it is clear that black children need their fathers. Although the protests in response to the killing of unarmed black people have been peaceful, the looting and violence perpetuated by a few must be addressed. It was painful watching young people—black and white—breaking into buildings and stealing merchandise. Those images remind us that for many of these youth, dads are likely not in the picture. (Continued on pg. 16)

In a comprehensive forthcoming report, “The Blueprint—Reimagining the Narrative of the black Father,” we outline those factors that are necessary for understanding the black father, such as the economic challenges that stem from having lower rates of upward mobility and higher rates of downward mobility than whites, leading to large income disparities that persist across generations. These economic factors can substantially and negatively impact black families in real time. When examining the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, many black families found themselves vulnerable and unable to maintain their households with little-to-no liquid assets. Differential educational outcomes are also a barrier to success for black families. black males, for example, still experience greater impediments to graduating from college and when they do, they are more likely to graduate from for-profit institutions with larger amounts of college debt. Physical and mental health disparities are another factor rarely addressed as significant to the well-being of fathers (and therefore, families) of color. For example, black men experience the worst health outcomes of any other demographic group, and at age 45, black men have a life expectancy that is three years less www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

H.E.A.L.

The rewards of gardening Sandra Millon Underwood, RN, PhD, FAAN, Professor Emerita UWM - College of Nursing Many of our relatives living in the South grew and preserved food out of necessity, so perhaps they were on to something. With ongoing food chain supply issues and skyrocketing grocery prices, this might be a great time to get back to basics and ‘grow’ a “green thumb” (pun intended). Not only is gardening a great way to decrease your grocery bill, but it also has some mental and physical benefits. Gardening can be done in small spaces as well as large, open spaces, and there are many community gardening programs that are available to get you started.

Curtisthene Montgomery learned to garden growing up in the South. She continues to use her “green thumb” by maintaining gardens in two locations—a community garden at Shorewood High School and in a private backyard of neighbors, Bill and Kay Beck. “I love getting my hands in the soil and watching my garden grow. I still have more planting to do this year, but I have already completed my garden at Shorewood High School. I planted tomatoes, peppers, collard greens and strawberries. Growing up in the South, we always had gardens and shared the vegetables with neighbors and friends. I continue to do that. I love it. It is part of me. “Gardening can also help you save on your grocery bill. I preserve much of what I grow. Everyone has a different way of preserving their food. I pick, wash, and put my collard greens in the freezer without blanching them. They turn out well. I also believe that when www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

you garden, the food is healthier. You know what type of soil and fertilizer are used and you have more control over what you are eating,” said Montgomery. Vevette Hill-Nwagbaraocha, Manager of McGovern Park Senior Center, oversees a senior-led community garden in McGovern Park that currently has 17 garden beds. She echoes Montgomery’s comments about the merits of gardening, including access to nutritious food. McGovern Park’s program recently became park of Groundwork Milwaukee, a nonprofit initiative whose mission is “to bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement and management of the physical environment by developing communitybased partnerships that empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic and social well-being.”

“We are trying to recreate the community garden. The last few years have been challenging for everyone so one of our goals is to address the health equity issue and gardening is a big part of that. Being outdoors and growing healthy foods that the community can access is also important. And, while our main focus is on our seniors, they have a great deal to share with the larger community and vice versa,” said HillNwagbaraocha. According to HillNwagbaraocha, many people do not know that McGovern Park is one of the few Milwaukee County parks that has an apple orchard. In partnership with Milwaukee County Parks, and under the guidance of the park’s supervisor, Alonzo Jones, McGovern Park’s Senior Program is committed to not only engaging with the community but welcomes volunteers who

want to get involved with gardening and helping with the apple orchard. “We want folks to experience the joys of gardening. We also want people to come to the park and enjoy the lagoon. We welcome fishing, bird watchers, and residents to use the walking and running trails in the park. It is a small park, but it is right in the heart of the city,” said Hill-Nwagbaraocha. For more information or to volunteer, residents can call (414) 527-0990. Andre Lee Ellis is a long-time community activist and avid gardener. The founder and former director of “We Got This,” Ellis now spearheads another community gardening initiative called “Andre Lee Ellis & Company Gardening Program,” featuring “CAGE - Community Agricultural Gardening Experiences.” Located at 1313 W. Reservoir, Ellis is not only teaching youth how to grow gardens but provides the bounty from the garden free to community residents.

“We work with neighbors to maintain the garden, but we are particularly engaged with youth to show them ways to use their idle time to do some good in the community,” said Ellis. Starting on June 18th, Ellis will host Saturday morning programs for youth from 8 a.m. to noon. Youth interested in participating must arrive by 8 a.m. and they will be paid $10 an hour. No preregistration is required, but Ellis is adamant that youth show up ON TIME. “If they (youth) arrive after 8 a.m., they must come back the next week. One of the things we are doing is combining agriculture and job readiness to get youth ready for the employment world. They must learn to be on time for work. We will grow food, mentor youth, and engage them in community clean-up,

while promoting peace in the community. We already have some plants in raised boxes, including collard greens, tomatoes, green peppers,” said Ellis. Ellis also uses his theatrical background to engage with youth. “I use theatrics to help them see themselves through a program called “See Yourself. Be a Better Self” in a module called “Acting Out to Keep From Acting Up,” said Ellis.

we tend to our garden throughout the season because we have faith that what we've planted will not only grow but produce nutritious food for ourselves, or our families, and friends; talk about the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. Faith's primary function is to lift our level of expectation. We sow expecting to reap. We do our part and our Creator does the rest. We discover that this simple truth can be applied to any area of our life,” said Chef Jones. YUZU MUSHROOMS (garden veggie dish)

Chef Marvin Jones is always out and about in the community, demonstrating how to prepare nutritious and healthy meals. He also enjoys gardening in small spaces. While Chef Jones admits to being somewhat of a novice gardener, he manages to grow some exotic herbs. “It’s all about location, location, location. No matter where you live, if you can catch sunlight for at least four to five hours, you can plant a garden. The trick is to start with good soil and adequate sunlight. In Wisconsin, so much of the soil is contaminated. Many people use raised gardens, but you can certainly plant directly into the soil if you choose. I have a small balcony space, so I grow herbs such as orange mint for tea, Salem rosemary, which I primarily use for fish, and Moroccan oregano. I start by purchasing the seedlings for these plants. I soak the plants using a spray bottle every other day and they respond well. I also have hibiscus blooming indoors, after I was told they wouldn’t grow indoors,” said Jones. Chef Jones is also philosophical about gardening, “In almost every available space where gardens are planted, the spiritual attribute of faith is on full display. We joyfully put in the work needed to prepare the soil to receive our seeds and

Celebrating Juneteenth

Juneteenth: The history of a new holiday Juneteenth, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War, has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s. President Biden signed legislation last year that made Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, a federal holiday, after interest in the day was renewed during the summer of 2020 and the nationwide protests that followed the police killings of Black Americans including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. There has been a noticeable increase in Juneteenth celebrations across the United States over the past few years. With this year’s holiday coming just over a month after a white gunman killed 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, one of the deadliest racist massacres in recent U.S. history, Juneteenth celebrations may resonate in new ways. Here’s a brief guide to Juneteenth. How did Juneteenth begin? On June 19, 1865, about two months after the Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Va., Gordon Granger, a Union general, arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. General Granger’s announcement

put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two and a half years earlier, on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln. The holiday is also called “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day.” How is it celebrated? Early celebrations involved prayer and family gatherings, and later included annual pilgrimages to Galveston by former enslaved people and their families, according to Juneteenth.com. In 1872, a group of African American ministers and businessmen in Houston purchased 10 acres of land and created Emancipation Park which was intended to hold the city’s annual Juneteenth celebration. Today, while some celebrations take place among families in backyards where food is an integral element, some cities, like Atlanta and Washington, hold larger events, including parades and festivals with residents, local businesses and more.

While celebrations in 2020 and 2021 were largely subdued by the coronavirus pandemic, some cities this year are pressing forward with plans. Galveston has remained a busy site for Juneteenth events over the years, said Douglas Matthews, who has helped coordinate them for more than two decades. After dedicating a 5,000-square-foot mural last year, in 2022 Galveston will celebrate the holiday with a banquet, poetry festival, parade and a picnic. Organizers in Atlanta will hold a parade and music festival at Centennial Olympic Park, and similar events are scheduled in Baltimore, Brooklyn, Los Angeles and Tulsa, Okla. The path to a national holiday. In 1980, Texas became the first state to designate Juneteenth as a holiday. All 50 states and the District of Columbia now recognize the day in some form. In the wake of the nationwide protests against police brutality in 2020, the push for federal recognition of Juneteenth gained new

momentum, and Congress quickly pushed through legislation in the summer of 2021. In the House, the measure passed by a vote of 415 to 14, with all of the opposition coming from Republicans, some of whom argued that calling the new holiday Juneteenth Independence Day, echoing July 4, would create confusion and force Americans to choose a celebration of freedom based on their race. On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed the bill into law, making Juneteenth the 11th holiday recognized by the federal government. At a White House ceremony, Mr. Biden singled out Opal Lee, an activist who at the age of 89 walked from her home in Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., and called her “a grandmother of the movement to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.” The law went into effect immediately, and the first federal Juneteenth holiday was celebrated the next day. (The holiday was observed on June 18, as June 19 fell on a Saturday.) Why has Juneteenth become so important? Following the killing of George Floyd, a 46-yearold Black man who died in the custody of the Minneapolis Police in May 2020, thousands of people around the United States

poured onto the streets in protest. Mr. Floyd’s name, as well as the names of Ms. Taylor, Mr. Arbery, David McAtee and others, became a rallying cry for change across the country, effectively re-energizing the Black Lives Matter movement. That change came in waves. In Minneapolis, officials banned the use of chokeholds and strangleholds by the police, and said officers must intervene and report any use of unauthorized force. Democrats in Congress unveiled sweeping legislation targeting misconduct and racial discrimination by the police. The bill was the most expansive intervention into policing that lawmakers have proposed in recent memory. Companies across the business spectrum voiced support for the Black Lives Matter movement and either suspended or fired employees who mocked Mr. Floyd’s death or made racist remarks. In April 2021, Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty of two counts of murder in the death of Mr. Floyd. But two years on, many of the city’s residents say that genuine change has been slow. Mark Anthony Neal, an African-American studies scholar at Duke University, said there are some comparisons between the end of the Civil War to (Continued on pg. 17)
