St. Ann's Center for Intergenerational Care hosts the 2017 Generations United Awards Luncheon program On June 13-16, 2017, St. Ann's Center for Intergenerational Care co-hosted the annual Generations United 2017 Global Intergenerational Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. As part of the four-day event St. Ann's hosted the 5th Generations United Janet Sainer Luncheon and Awards Program. Awards were handed out in various categories to individuals and organizations which work to provide opportunities and services for individuals of all ages. Greater Milwaukee Foundation honors local business leaders for civic achievements at 2017 Annual Meeting The Greater Milwaukee Foundation honored three community leaders during its 2017 Annual Meeting and Civic Awards Presentation at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, June 15, 2017. New center and apartment complex honors the late Welford Sanders

On Monday, June 19, 2017, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, and Dawn Sanders, the daughter of the late Welford Sanders were present for a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of the completion of the Welford Sanders Enterprise Center. The ceremony also included a groundbreaking for the Welford Sanders Historic Lofts. Both facilities will be housed in the former Nunn Bush Shoe Factory, 2821 N. 4th Street. The building had been vacant for more than 30 years before Sunset Investors President Kendall Breunig purchased the historic site for $220,000 and donated it to the city. Welford Sanders was the long-time executive director of the not-for-profit Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation. His leadership is credited with helping to improve and increase affordable housing and business in the Harambee neighborhood of Milwaukee. Sanders, who passed away two years ago, had long sought to redevelop the Nunn Bush building into a center for growth in the neighborhood. Now that dream has finally been fulfilled though a joint effort of his family and community. An NCON Communications Publication

United Healthcare, Progressive Community Health Center and City of Milwaukee Housing Authority host Community Safety and Wellness Night United Healthcare Community Plan, Progressive Community Health Center and the City of Milwaukee Housing Authority hosted a Community Safety and Wellness Night on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the Progressive Community Health Center Hillside, 1452 North 7th Street. The goal of this event was to provide members of the community access to basic resources along with activities for the whole family. Each attendee received a $10 voucher to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the onsite Growing Power Mobile Market. A dental clinic provided free screenings; nurses administered free blood pressure checks; children enjoyed a variety of kid-friendly safety activities; and each child went home with free books courtesy of Reach Out and Read. Food for the fair was generously provided by Mister Bar-B-Que.

Mayor Barrett welcomes teens starting summer jobs through the Earn and Learn program On Monday, June 19, 2017 Mayor Tom Barrett, along with representatives from the Medical College of Wisconsin and Employ Milwaukee, congratulated 20 teens on their first day of work at their premier summer job. The Earn and Learn program summer kick-off event was held at the Medical College of Wisconsin, 8701 Watertown Plank Road. The teens were treated to a welcoming program and tour of the laboratory and other areas where the young people will be working. Teens will work at locations throughout the Medical College and MSOE this summer. These young people are being provided a unique opportunity to experience careers in healthcare first-hand this summer. Started in 2004 by Mayor Barrett, Earn and Learn is operated jointly by Employ Milwaukee, Inc., and the Milwaukee Department of City Development. Rebuilding Our Community

Treading water Don’t you just love it when summer officially comes in Wisconsin? I certainly do. Although short-lived, it does make us feel good to enjoy the warmer weather, if only for a few months. It’s a time to take advantage of doing a number of outdoor activities, including going to the beach, listening to a summer concert in the park, boating on the lake, running in a distance race, family reunion, gardening or just going on a meaningful day trip or vacation. Without question, it is a time we all look forward to each year. On one hand, we see peo-
ple who are making more than a livable wage or higher incomes. For them these are great times. It’s a time to invest in stocks, bonds, housing, and a business startup; become a venture capitalist
or just sit back and enjoy the fruits of one’s labor. There seems to be no limit on what can be done; the sky is the limit, for these are some of the “best” days of their lives. It is certainly a time of per-
sonal enrichment, renewal, expansion and to “ride the waves until they stop.” On the other hand and regardless of what each season brings, a lot of people living in urban America see little to no change at all in terms of their socioeconomic status or living condition. Today, there are many more people whose lives only consist of a daily grind to eke out a simple living and nothing more. Without a break, each day they find it quite difficult to see any potential opportunity in the midst of just getting by. Even when working a second or third part-time
job, they can only do the basic bare minimum and yet feel trapped by the reality of real life experiences. The one sure thing about treading water in life is the fact that you have to be able to stay afloat, all the while trying to keep your head above water. It is much harder than you think and to accomplish. And when you do not have a certain level of education, training skills nor the opportunity, the next incoming wave can take you under. It is one thing to keep your hands moving and legs kicking; it’s another to see your way forward when all around you looks and feels the same. National Awareness Month: Post-Ttaumatic Stress Disorder Awareness (conclusion) In the conclusion of National Awareness Month, this column will look at PSTD Awareness. The National Center for PTSD promotes awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and effective treatments throughout the year. Starting in 2010, Congress named June 27 PTSD Awareness Day (S. Res. 455). In 2014, the Senate designated the full month of June for National PTSD Awareness (S. Res. 481). After a traumatic event, most people have painful memories. For many people, the effects of the event fade over time. But for others, the memories, thoughts and feelings don't go away - even months or years after the event is over. Mental health experts are not sure why some people develop PTSD and others do not. If stress reactions do not improve over time and they disrupt everyday life, it is important to seek help to determine if PTSD is present.
The purpose of PTSD Awareness Month is to encourage everyone to raise public awareness of PTSD and effective treatments. The National Center for PTSD is dedicated to research and education on trauma and PTSD and are constantly working to assure the latest research findings to help those exposed to trauma. The National Center for PTSD invites you to join their efforts to spread the word about PTSD during PTSD Awareness Month. Here are a few tips of ways you can help:

Record number of MPS Schools awarded for behavior and academic excellence Milwaukee Public Schools has set another record for the number of schools awarded by an independent, statewide organization for promoting positive behaviors: 107 schools, up from 100 last year and 79 the year before, received recognition. MPS also broke records for the number of schools recognized in academics: 90 schools were awarded for reading, up from 62 last year and 39 the year before; and 65 schools were awarded in math, up from 52 last year and 22 the year before. Schools throughout the state of Wisconsin were recognized at Bronze, Silver or Gold levels through Wiscon-
sin RtI Center's rubric for recognition. Out of the 13 Wisconsin schools that received a Gold designation, eight are MPS schools. A full

Every time foster kids move, they lose months of academic progress How instability wreaks havoc on these children's school lives—and what can be done to fix it
When 12-year-old Jimmy Wayne’s parents dropped him off at a motel and drove away, he became the newest member of the North Carolina Foster Care system. Over the next two years in the foster care system, he attended 12 different schools. “I don’t even remember what I learned—no, let me rephrase that—I don’t remember what they tried
to teach me—after fifth grade,” he told me recently. “It wasn’t until I had a stable home and was taken in by a loving family in tenth grade that I was able to hear anything, to learn anything. Before that, I wasn’t thinking about science, I was thinking about what I was going to eat that day or where I could get clothes. When I was finally in one place for a while,
going to the same school, everything changed. Even my handwriting improved. I could focus. I was finally able to learn.” Wayne got lucky. He was taken in at 16 by an older couple who saw how desperate he was for a stable home and an education. He lived with them for the next six years, and they gave him the stability he needed in order

to finish high school and college and launch a successful country music career. He’s become a national spokesperson for Court Appointed Special Advocates, a network of volunteers who work to make sure that abused and neglected children don’t get lost in the legal and administrative red tape of the foster care system. Students in foster care move schools at least once or twice a year, and by the time they age out of the system, over one third will have experienced five or more school moves. Children are estimated to lose four to six months of academic progress per move, which puts most foster care children years behind their peers. Falling behind isn’t the only problem with frequent school moves: School transfers also decrease the chances a foster care student will ever graduate from high school. A national study of 1,087 foster care alumni found that “youth who had even one fewer change in living arrangement per year were almost twice as likely to graduate from high school before leaving foster care.” Right now, the United States’ more than 400,000 foster care children complete high school at much lower rates than their non-foster peers; decreasing the number of school moves for foster care students could translate to substantially more high school diplomas. Several pieces of legislation have tried to tackle the problem of school transfers from different angles. The Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act of 2008 require child welfare agencies to have a plan in place for ensuring “educational stabili-
ty of the child while in foster care.” The Elementary and Secondary Education Act and No Child Left Behind require schools to close the achievement gap between high- and low-performing students, which led education agencies to identify high-risk students, like foster children, and work to address their specific educational needs. The Uninterrupted Scholars Act, passed in January 2014, grants childcare welfare agencies access to education records that were previously rendered private under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. This allows agencies to retain up-to-date copies of school records, which expedites foster children’s transfers and academic placement. These laws are important first steps towards getting more foster care children to graduate: Enrollment delays, frustration over the inability to transfer credits, and the unnecessary repetition of partially completed courses are all factors that increase the chances that students will drop out of school before completing their education. Still, foster care children face too much educational instability. Kate Burdick, an attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow with the Juvenile Law Center, shared the changes she’d make that would greatly improve the chances that children in foster care get the educational stability they need: Schools must ensure school stability for children in foster care by requiring schools to be flexible around residency requirements in order to allow children to remain in the same school or district, and provide the supports to make that stability happen, (Continued on pg. 15)

How much sleep does your child really need? Parents take note. Experts have dropped new recommendations on exactly how much sleep your child needs. The recommendations, the first from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), outline the “amount of sleep needed to promote optimal health” in children (infants to 12-yearolds) and teenagers (13 to 18). “Sleep is essential for a healthy life, and it is important to promote healthy sleep habits in early childhood,” said Dr. Shalini Paruthi, Pediatric Consensus Panel moderator and fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, in a statement published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. “It is especially important as children reach adolescence to continue to ensure that teens are able to get sufficient sleep.” While that may be true, according to Dr. Nathanial Watson, president of the AASM, “More than a third of the U.S. population is not getting enough sleep, and for children who are in the critical years of early development, sleep is even more crucial.”
“Making sure there is ample time for sleep is one of the best ways to promote a healthy lifestyle for a child,” Dr. Watson added. To come up with the guidelines (listed below), a panel of 13 of the nation’s foremost sleep experts reviewed 864 scientific articles concerning the relationship between sleep duration and health in children. Findings from the project, which spanned 10 months, revealed that children who received the recommended amount of sleep experienced “overall better health outcomes including: improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health.” Additionally, experts discovered that insufficient sleep was associated with an
increased risk in self-harm in teens. “The panel found that sleeping fewer than the recommended hours is associated with attention, behavior and learning problems. Insufficient sleep also increases the risk of accidents, injuries, hypertension, obesity, diabetes and depression. The panel also found that insufficient sleep in teenagers is associated with increased risk of self-harm, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts,” the statement reads. The AASP Recommendations: • Infants four to 12 months: 12 to 16 hours per 24 hours (including naps) • Children one to two years of age: 11 to 14 hours per 24 hours (including naps)

Prepare your kids for the real world by turning monthly bills into lessons When you're a kid, a few dollars can seem like all the money in the world. It can take weeks, sometimes months, to save up your allowance. When you finally decide to spend it, you might realize that $10 or $20 isn't as much as it seems. As a parent, you can help your children build important money management skills by providing experiences for them at a young age. Leading by example is a good way to start, and it can help instill good values and money habits. However, you'll also want your children to get their hands dirty. Open up your books. The value of money is a lesson you learn over time. For young children, games, such as Peter Pig's Money Counter, or activities that help them identify coins and bills could be a good place to start. Older children may be ready to see how much things really cost. Going over bank or credit card statements, you could explain why you made
each purchase and look for savings opportunities. You can also turn a monthly bill into a teaching moment. Children might not realize how leaving the lights, heat or AC on can affect your monthly bills. You can sit down together and compare each month's bill to the bill from the previous year. The practice of reviewing and comparing bills can help children understand that their actions have financial consequences. They'll also start to learn how much it costs to keep your home comfortable. That's a valuable lesson, one I didn't truly learn until I had my first apartment. You could take a similar approach to the groceries or other monthly expenses. Help your children earn an income. Knowing the
numbers is only part of the picture. It'll be difficult for children to practice managing money if they don't have any money to manage. But how, when and why children should receive an allowance is a debate for many parents. Whether you pay a chorebased allowance or offer payment based on extra work, you could use a personal finance app that lets children see how much they'll earn for each task. There are a variety of apps designed for different age groups, and some let kids create virtual accounts
where they can track their earnings, spending and progress towards financial goals. You can also help children find ways to earn money from outside the family. Organizing a yard sale could be a chance for them to help you clean out the home, practice bargaining and learn valuable lessons in entrepreneurship. Even a lemonade stand or bake sale requires that they buy supplies, work to earn money and put aside some of their earnings to pay for more supplies later. Make your kids responsible for their bills. With a steady income comes increased responsibility. Make teenagers the boss of a bill, with real consequences for late payments. The mobile phone or internet bill could be a good place to start. Figure out an appropriate portion for them to take on and require them
to pay you each month. If they're late, they lose internet access or their phone until they can pay their balance. When they don't have enough saved to pay the bill, offer work opportunities for them to make money. Once they take responsibility for their first monthly bill, you can also share how you manage the household's finances. Show them what it's like to keep multiple bills organized each month, make payments by writing checks or setting up auto-pay. Then explain how late payments can lead to fees, affect your credit and (just like with their phone) get services shut off. Bottom line: Understanding how much it costs to manage a home and the importance of paying your bills on time can help you avoid costly mistakes. Some people learn these lessons once they're at college or living on their own, but you can help give your kids a leg up by taking a proactive approach to their financial education.

Turkey, Spinach and Apple Wrap
Recipe reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research 1 tablespoon reduced-fat mayonnaise 2 teaspoons honey mustard 2 whole-wheat lavash wraps or flour tortillas (8 inches each) 2 cups baby spinach leaves, loosely packed, washed and dried 4 thin slices turkey breast 1/4 Granny Smith apple, sliced paper-thin Combine mayonnaise and mustard. Lay out both wraps. Spread edges of each with mayonnaise mixture. Leaving space on one side of wraps, arrange layer of greens on top of wraps. Top each layer with two slices of turkey. Evenly divide apple slices and lay lengthwise across turkey. Fold over one end of wrap then both sides. Roll wrap as tightly as possible toward opposite side. Cover each wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate seamside down, up to 4 hours, before serving. To serve, remove plastic wrap and cut each wrap in half at an angle. 1 cup asparagus, cut into 2-inch pieces 1/2 cup shitake mushroom caps, sliced 1 package Seeds of Change Quinoa, Brown & Red Rice with Flaxseeds 1/4 cup slivered almonds Salsa Verde (optional): 1 bunch scallions 1 clove garlic 1/2 cup packed cilantro leaves 1/2 cup packed mint leaves 1/2 cup packed basil leaves 1/2 cup lemon juice 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil Heat oven to 400 F. In oven-proof pan, season salmon with salt and pepper, and drizzle each fillet with olive oil. Bake 12-15 minutes, until cooked through. In blender or food processor, combine all Salsa Verde ingredients and pulse until fully incorporated but still rustic and chunky. Set aside. In medium saute pan over medium-high heat, heat remaining olive oil. Add mushrooms and asparagus and saute vigorously 3-5 minutes. Add grains and slivered almonds, and continue to saute until heated through, about 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper, to taste. Divide grains among eight plates, place a piece of salmon on each plate then finish with dollop of Salsa Verde, if desired, and serve. Substitution: Shitake mushroom caps may be substituted with button mushrooms or other wild mushrooms.

Chill until ready to serve. Heat oven to 350 F. Place chicken in baking dish. In medium bowl, mix together butter, lemon juice, pepper, garlic powder, oregano and Greek seasoning; pour over chicken. Bake about 50 minutes, uncovered, basting occasionally. Place salad greens in large serving bowl. Top with Tomato-Cucumber Salsa. Slice chicken in thin strips and arrange on top of salad. Sprinkle with feta cheese and garnish with olives and pepper.

The authors vividly describe what it was like to be the sole African American in a NASA work group and how these brave and determined men also helped to transform Southern society by integrating colleges, patenting new inventions, holding elective office, and reviving and governing defunct towns. Adding new names to the roster of civil rights heroes and a new chapter to the story of space exploration, We Could Not Fail demonstrates how African Americans broke the color barrier by competing successfully at the highest level of American intellectual and technological achievement.
