Milwaukee Celebrates 51st Annual Juneteenth Day

On Sunday, June 19, 2022, the city of Milwaukee observed its 51st Juneteenth celebration. Milwaukee is home to one of the longest held Juneteenth Day celebrations in the United States. June 19, 2022 marked the 51st anniversary of the local event to commemorate Emancipation. When it first began in 1971, Milwaukee was one of the first northern cities to host such celebrations. The local parade and festivities have been organized by Northcott Neighborhood House for the past half century. In pre-pandemic years the event would attract up to 170,000 visitors. For 2022, the second year of Juneteenth being a federal holiday, the crowd capacity appeared to break all previous records. Nearly 400 vendors in booths lined King Drive from Burleigh to Center Streets, offering African-style crafts and a variety of traditional food unique to the street festival. The holiday began with the Juneteenth Parade with Mayor Cavalier Johnson as the Grand Marshal followed by opening ceremonies. The street festival concluded with a concert at Bernice and Clinton Rose Park.

IPAMA hosts Juneteeth Day breakfast

Loren Muwonge, who will be entering the 11th grade at Brown Deer High School in September 2022, departed Milwaukee to attend a 7-week, residential, secondary college chemistry and environmental studies program for high school students at Harvard University on June 17, 2022. Sponsors include The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper Printing & Publishing Company, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Epsilon Kappa Omega and Mu Beta Chapters, Education Foundation of Brown Deer, Members of The Links, Inc. Cream City (WI) Chapter, NPHC Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter, various community members, Clarence Parrish Foundation/Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Phi Omega Chapter, Royal Capital Group LLC, Members of TLOD Milwaukee Chapter, and Black Women 50+ Magazine. Upon completion of the program, Loren will earn eight college credits. She said she hopes to return to Harvard as an undergraduate after completing high school.

On Saturday June 18, 2022 at the Institute for the Preservation of African American Music & Arts located (IPAMA) at 3200 W. Hampton Ave., Attorney John Daniels hosted a Juneteeth Day breakfast for the Divine 9, introducing the new African American Music & Arts building.

The IPAMA provides an archival repository that displays inventions, discoveries and accomplishments of African Americans from 1619 to present. They provide precollege adult educational programs that have afforded hundreds of adults to receive high school diplomas and partner with various accredited universities.

These working adults are able to advance their career and earn bachelor's and master’s degrees. The Institute provides training for more than 300 community and faith-based organizations in a safe environment and advances economic opportunities for our community. After-school programs introduce children to numerous opportunities, partnerships and training in culinary arts and basic domestic skills that create healthy home environments.

seriously. I was not in a rush to have children. Although I love kids, I thought it more important to deal with my own childish nature before having children of my own.

The Bible teaches: 1 Corinthians 13:11: “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” It took maturity, as a man, to appreciate the responsibilities of parenting. Once I understood that, I made a commitment to do my best to be the best dad I could be.

I believe that my own experience in the church as a child guided my path as an adult.

I remember my experiences on the usher board, in the youth choir, and participating in Sunday school. These church volunteers (members, teachers, and leaders) helped mentor me as a child and left a lasting impression on my life. As I look back on those experiences, I wanted nothing less for my kids. I believe God prepares us for our missions in life. As a parent, I knew God had used my own childhood to prepare me. So, doing anything other than my best, I felt, would be an insult to God, who gave His

As I look back on the many long days of parenting: homework assignments, school projects, weekends devoted only to our kids' activities resulting in very little idle time as my wife and I drove them back and forth to activities and sports events; yet there are unequivocally no regrets.

God, our church family, and commitment to our children are the ties that continues to bind my wife and I and our children together as a family.

You see, this was God’s plan.

This was “a purpose filled life.” Even today, as we continue to nurture and advise our young adult children, it gives us pause to look back on the years. While they seemed endless back then, they appear to have been too short now. The memories, the joy, the realization that following God’s plan, have prepared our children to be productive citizens, good Christians, and people of service to others; bringing unspeakable joy to my heart.

Now, while both are college graduates and strong believers in Christ, it has been hard at times to let go of their once little hands and allow them to lead their lives. But as the adage says, it is best to “let go and let God!” Many men are not involved in their children’s lives. Many men miss those cherished moments. Fear of failure, problems with their spouse, inability to get sustaining employment, not able to pay the bills, are a few of the justifications some men use as an excuse to bail on their responsibilities. Without faith

sometimes fathers give up too easily. When we get together as a family, when we reflect on the events in our children’s lives, when they call me “daddy,” I’m proud to have been there to share their experiences, their joy, and all those cherished moments…and why wouldn’t I be proud, I was there to help guide their steps. I Am Proud To Be Called Daddy! Thank you, Brandee and Caleb, for allowing me to be an intricate part of your life. And thank you God for blessing me with two wonderful children and a loving and dedicated wife. What more can a man ask for!!

Remembering community leader Wallace White Born ~ May 28, 1933 • Departed ~ June 11, 2022

Wallace White, a long-standing community leader, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, after a long illness. He was born on May 28, 1933, to George Cornelius White and Janet White in Chicago, IL. Wallace spent his childhood in Chicago and later went on to further his education earning a BA in social psychology from Roosevelt University in Chicago and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Southern California.

He was a proud American and served in the United States Army. He often wore a lapel pin of the United States flag. He told stories of how he had to fight his way up the ranks even there.

He began his early career as a sociologist, working as a community organizer in the city of Chicago and specializing in inner-city youth and gang violence reduction. He continued his work with the community as the Executive Director of the Concentrated Employment Program (CEP) in Gary, IN, where he worked as a cabinet member for Mayor Richard Hatcher developing programs for underserved communities.

He was also instrumental in securing federal funding to run those programs. White went on to serve as a cabinet

member for other mayoral administrations and was a key part of several mayoral election campaigns. His positions included Chief Administrative Officer for Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson in Newark, NJ, and Director of the Department of Public Works for Mayor Marion Barry in Washington, D.C. After his work in Washington, D.C., White was sought after internationally, from as far away as Japan, for his knowledge of then state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant management. It was then that White moved to Milwaukee, where he became the first African American Director of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) and later served as MMSD Commissioner and Chairman. In each of his leadership roles, he supported the inclusion of local and minority owned businesses, helping to provide opportunities for workforce and small business development.

White spent the remainder of his career in the private sector. He was Vice President of Jacobs Engineering Group (formerly Sverdrup), one of the world’s largest and most successful scientific, technical, engineering and construction management and consulting firms. After his career as a senior-level public administrator and corporate

During his 33 years in Milwaukee, White served as Board Member and Program Chair for the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIC), Chairman of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Milwaukee, a member of the Executive Committee of the Community Brainstorming Conference, Captain of the Bradley Estates Neighborhood Organization, a member of the Bayshore Town Center Community Advisory Board, and was an adjunct professor at Cardinal Stritch University.

He acquired and managed Vaporized Coatings, an industrial powder coating service, and founded W2 Excel, LLC, a business administration consulting firm, and served as its CEO.

White lived in Milwaukee for more than three decades and was a servant leader in the truest sense. He led with integrity, excellence, and compassion, always giving of himself to better the lives of others¬—particularly the underserved in the African American commu-

A memorial service for Wallace White will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 9th at New Testament Church located at 10201 West Bradley Road, Milwaukee, WI 53224, where White was a member.

Learn the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them. Monitor others, especially those at high risk, such as infants and young children; people 65 and older; people who are overweight; people who are physically ill or taking certain medications, such as for depression, insomnia or poor circulation, and people who overexert during work or exercise.

Visit at-risk adults at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children require much more frequent checks.

If you are 65 or older, have a friend or relative call to check on you twice a day during a heat wave.

Being Frank

Be honest Juneteenth Day 2022 has passed. African Americans have drunk liquor and dined on chicken wings in celebration of Juneteenth Day. Juneteenth Day is the celebration of the abolishment of slavery in the USA. Since African Americans are “free” let’s spend a few minutes being honest about the 2022 African American.

“Free at last. Free at last!”

Those words come from Martin Luther King’s famous, I Have a Dream, speech. The African American has been “free” in the USA for 157 years. Yet, is this so-called freedom a dream? The illusion of freedom for the African American resembles more nightmare than dream.

If we are being honest, then the 2022 African American is in some ways worse than they were when slavery was legal. The slaves knew who their enemies were and understood they were in slavery.

The 2022 African American thinks other African Americans are the enemy. The 2022 model of the African American is in mental slavery

How can an African American male say he loves himself when he mentally neuters himself to get a job? Better yet, how can an African American male claim self love while walking around with his buttocks exposed? Be honest in your answers.

at its height. Being honest, who do you think the majority of African Americans bought the weapons to protect themselves from? This is the kicker, “How many times have you looked at an African American youth and felt unsafe?” Shame the devil by telling the truth.

Neely Fuller has made comments stating that African Americans need to stay away from each other. This may be a true statement when looking at the actions that take place in the African American community. Take the senseless violence enacted

by African American on each other; or the exploitation of African American by other African Americans on every level of society. Why? African Americans have adapted a white racist outlook on life and have become anti-black.

Just listen to the music many African American artists produce. Would a race who loved themselves treat each other the way African Americans do in 2022? Be honest now.

African Americans have to find peace with the person in the mirror. This is the first step to solving the issues that plague the African American community. Once African Americans have selflove, then they can love one another. African Americans need to understand that everything in the USA is against them. US society was created by whites for whites.

African Americans have to stop viewing each other with the blue eyes of Caucasians.

African Americans have to be honest when assessing their children and family. These previous tasks won’t be easy, but honesty is supposedly the best policy.

Marinated Skirt Steak

Marinated Skirt Steak

Recipe courtesy of chef Nate Appleman on behalf of Abbott Vinaigrette: 1/4 cup oil 1/4 cup fish sauce 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons raw sugar 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1 lime, juice only 1 clove garlic, minced 1 small Thai bird chile or serrano chile, chopped 1/4 head finely shaved green cabbage 1/4 head finely shaved purple cabbage 2 carrots, thinly julienned Skirt steak: 1 1/2 pounds trimmed skirt steak 1/2 cup coconut milk

Lemon Chicken with Roasted Red Onions and Potatoes

cloves garlic, minced tablespoons lime juice cup chopped fresh cilantro tablespoons sriracha salt, to taste 3 cups cooked brown rice 1/2 cup crushed peanuts 1 lime, quartered, for garnish To make vinaigrette: In large bowl, mix oil, fish sauce, rice wine vinegar, water, sugar, cilantro, lime juice, garlic and chile. Toss cabbage and carrots in vinaigrette; refrigerate until ready to serve.

To make skirt steak: Marinate steak in coconut milk, garlic, lime juice, cilantro, sriracha and salt, to taste, at least 1 hour, or up to 24 hours.

Heat grill to high.

Grill 3-4 minutes each side until medium rare.

Let rest 3 minutes.

Thinly slice steaks against grain and serve with vinaigrette, rice and crushed peanuts; garnish with lime wedges.

Cheesy Frittata with Veggies

Recipe courtesy of chef Nate Appleman on behalf of Abbott Lemon chicken: 1 whole chicken, cut into eight pieces 1 ounce minced garlic 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika 1/4 teaspoon ground fennel seed 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander 1 tablespoon kosher salt

Frittata: oil 2 medium leeks, sliced 8 ounces blanched, chopped broccoli salt, to taste 9 eggs 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 2 ounces grated Parmigiano Reggiano 2 tablespoons heavy cream To make roasted garlic: Preheat oven to 400 F.

Potatoes: 2 1/2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes salted water oil

Slice 1/4 inch off entire heads of garlic and place cut sides down in 1-liter casserole dish. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt; cover with lid.

Bake 35-45 minutes until heads of garlic are soft and light brown. Let cool then use back of knife to squeeze garlic from pods.

To make frittata: Lower oven to 375 F. In saute pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Cook leeks until soft; add broccoli then season with salt, to taste, and remove from heat.

In mixing bowl, mix roasted garlic, sauteed leeks and broccoli, eggs, parsley, Parmigiano Reggiano and cream; place in 9-inch pie dish and bake approximately 20 minutes until top of frittata is brown.

Remove from oven and let cool slightly before cutting and serving.

Cauliflower: 1 head cauliflower salted water ice 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 teaspoon tamari or soy sauce 1 tablespoon chopped parsley Roasted onions: 1 red onion salt oil For serving: 3 ounces pitted Castelvetrano or green olives, cut into quarters 5 ounces wild arugula 1 lemon, quartered To make lemon chicken: Marinate chicken in mixture of minced garlic, granulated garlic, paprika, smoked paprika, fennel pollen, dried oregano, coriander and salt; let sit overnight.

To make potatoes: Boil potatoes in heavily salted water until tender. Cool, peel and cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks. Toss with oil to coat; reserve.

Lemon Chicken with Roasted Red Onions and Potatoes

To make cauliflower: Cut cauliflower into florets and blanch in salted water 1 minute; shock in ice bath. Remove from ice and dry. Toss with mayonnaise, tamari and parsley; reserve.

To make roasted onions: Preheat oven to 450 F. Peel onion and slice into 1-inch rings. Toss with salt and oil; roast until slightly caramelized with texture. Chill and reserve.

Preheat oven to 450 F. Bake chicken on sheet pan approximately 15 minutes. Add potatoes and cauliflower. Bake approximately 15 minutes then switch oven to broil approximately 10 minutes.

Squeeze lemon over reserved onion.

When chicken is crispy and reaches internal temperature of 165 F, remove from oven and add onions and olives. Plate chicken, potatoes, onions, olives and cauliflower on top of arugula and garnish with lemon.
