Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter, and Black Arts MKE present 'I AM. Master Class Dance Camp'

On June 24, 2022, nine Milwaukee-area students completed the I AM. Master Class Dance Camp and received Certificates of Achievement. The dance camp was a 5-day immersive dance experience for middle and high school students interested in careers in dance. I AM. Master Class gave local youth exposure to instructor James Gilmer, an accomplished black artist with the internationally acclaimed African American dance company –The Alvin Ailey American Staff Photo Dance Theater. Students attended classes from 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. each day. The classes included rigorous warm-up exercises, in-depth training in various dance techniques, and the study of choreography from "Revelations," the iconic dance created by Alvin Ailey. "Revelations" is currently featured in nearly all of the performances of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. On the final day of the dance camp, the students performed an excerpt from "Revelations" for family, friends and members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in Studio 4A at the Marcus Performing Arts Center. James Gilmer also performed a solo dance to "Cucurrucucu Paloma" by Caetano Veloso. The I AM. Master Class Dance Camp was a collaborative project between Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter, and Black Arts MKE. As a nation and as a society, we in the United States of America like to think of ourselves and by extension, those we choose as leaders and representatives, as honest and reliable in all dealings. Upon engaging in public service, a military commitment or giving legal testimony, for example, we ask people to swear or affirm, usually invoking the name of God, that what they say or do will be based on truth and that they can be trusted. Imagine what would happen if someone willfully breached that pledge; both truth and trust are placed on trial.

Northcott Neighborhood House (NNH) was created in 1961 by the United Methodist Women of the United Methodist Church, the Wisconsin Annual Conference UMC and General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Juneteenth Day provides a light atmosphere where, while having fun and socializing, individuals can pick up health-related information, resources, or freebies that may have important reminders about health. Many nonprofits understand that they have somewhat of a ‘ready audience’ of individuals who might benefit from information and resources that, without events like this, they would never receive. Organizers of Juneteenth Day and other groups have picked up on this and are grateful for venues such as street festivals to reach their target audiences. “Health Connections— one of our partners—was on site during this year’s Juneteenth Day giving COVID-19 vaccinations or COVID-19 tests. African Americans tend to be very suspicious of health professionals, in general, but access to health care resources is another problem. Sometimes they just do not know where to go to access services. Our exhibitors are

The Advantages of Planning Ahead

T

he idea of planning ahead is simple. Those who plan ahead can be assured that, both you and your loved ones can benefit, when funeral arrangements are made well ahead of need. It’s beneficial to include your immediate family while planning, ensuring those left behind are aware of your wishes and able to experience a meaningful funeral. Advanced planning will also help your loved ones have the needed time to celebrate your life without the multiple distractions of decision making while mourning. By discussing your plans in advance, you can take all the time necessary to provide and decide your desires, discuss various payment options, as well as express your heartfelt wishes and select a funeral that’s designed specifically for you. For more information on pre-planning feel free to contact your local funeral service professional.
