Milwaukee Bucks win ECF, head to NBA Finals for first time in 47 years The Milwaukee Bucks are playing in an NBA Final for the first time in 47 years! To get there they defeated the Atlanta Hawks 4-2 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals series. Despite not having star Giannis Antetokounmpo for the last two games due to a hyperextended left knee, the Milwaukee Bucks were able to get it done on the road Saturday, July 3, 2021. Khris Middleton led all scorers with 32 points. Jrue Holiday had a near-triple-double with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. The Bucks played their first final game against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 and lost 105 to 118. However there are still more games to play.

Bill Cosby’s prison sentence overturned The Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned Bill Cosby's sexual assault conviction on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, paving the way for the 83-year-old to be released from prison after serving more than two years of a three- to ten-year sentence. Cosby was released from jail on the same day his conviction was overturned. The court said that a promise a previous prosecutor had made not to prosecute Cosby in order to compel him to testify in a civil lawsuit meant he couldn’t legally be charged

in the sexual assault case. In 2018, Cosby was convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his Pennsylvania estate in 2004, leading to a sentence in September 2018 of three to ten years in prison. But in 2005, then Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor determined the case be charged—but he would against Cosby was unwin- be deposed for a civil suit nable, leading to an agree- brought by Constand. ment that Cosby would not

That deposition was used years later to charge Cosby just days before the statute of limitations for sexual assault was set to expire, leading to a 2017 mistrial after jurors deadlocked. Cosby was tried again in 2018, and was convicted after prosecutors called several women who’d made similar claims of drugging and sexual assault to testify—which did not happen in the 2017 trial.

The Supreme Court also ruled that allowing the accusers’ testimony was inappropriate, finding it served as more of a character attack than affirming a pattern of criminal behavior. The court barred any possibility of a retrial, so he can’t be tried on these same charges. He could, however, potentially face new charges if a credible accuser comes forward within the statute of limitations, which can vary by state.

Declaration of Independence – Week 2 “A time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away.” - Ecclesiastes 3:6 Did you know on July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music? A year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks. Now Independence Day is celebrated as one of our summer holidays that includes festivals, parades and picnics.1 A catalyst that was a link in the chain of events leading to

the move for independence of the 13 colonies from Great Britain was Parliament deciding to tax its American colonies. Colonial assemblies denounced the law claiming the tax was illegal and burdensome on the grounds that they had no representation in Parliament, leading to the creation of the slogan, “no taxation without representation.” What is burdening you that you want to declare independence from? That’s the theme of this month’s series and the question posed to a handful of persons. This week, I will present two Declarations. Due to the transparency and candidness of the responses, the respondents have decided to be

identified by a pseudonym.

I fear if I am not “perfect”, I will be fired. That, in turn, I really need to let go of cause me anxiety. Among my fear friends, I fear if I disagree I need to let go of fear. with them they may stop There are things that I fear speaking to me so I keep quithat I really don’t have a rea- et on matters that I know I son to be afraid of. riage, sometimes I am afraid he will get tired of my insecurities and leave. It was only after hearing a sermon recently that talked about fear. I was so enlightened when the pastor said God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. I was so encouraged by that sermon. Thanks for opening up your column for our input. I will be working on declaring my independence from always being afraid of something and my dependence on God to give me the courage and strength I need to handle whatever I need to handle. - No More Fear Ignoring negativity I have realized that negativity can impact you in ways you can't imagine. Your mood is awful. You are grouchy and have headaches. Me anyway. Once I noticed this, I try to distance myself from it. Be it a situation or person. I'm at a point in my life where I am very content. I Timothy 6:6, Now godliness with contentment is great gain. The Lord also tells us, "to love thy neighbor as thy self. Matthew 19:19. It's hard most days when all you hear and see is negativity. Loving myself is far better than being negative. I immediately say a prayer. I thank the Lord, that I have Him in my life. If I can be someone positive, so be it. It just might rub off on somebody. It only takes one. Thank You, Lord! My Declaration of Independence is to ignore negativity. - Cecilia T. On Sunday, June 13, 2021, an appreciation dinner was held at the Masonic Lodge, 4315 N. 92nd Street, in honor of Elder Jesse Reed for all life accomplishments. Elder Reed was known as "Jesse the Butcher," because he was in the grocery business for 20 years. He then started Reed's Used Furniture Store, 4909 West Custer Street in 1995 and still runs it to this day. Elder Reed helped start the Juneteenth Day in 1971 and worked with OC White and former Mayor Henry Maier to launch African World Festival. Elder Reed's dinner was celebrated with a host of family and friends.

Special Edition: Family Reunions

Thursday, July 08, 2021

Wednesday, July 14, 2021

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

The History of the Black Family Reunion and how to plan one African American family reunions date back to Emancipation. Former slaves would place “Information Wanted” advertisements in newspapers in search of family. The Great Migration, between 1915-1940, of nearly four million African Americans from the South to the North, would greatly inspire family reunions. During these gatherings, extended family was significant, as families were separated and new kinship ties were formed in bondage. This family tradition became a tangible symbol of memory and resilience that endured slavery. The Black Family Reunion was first established by civil rights leader Dr. Dorothy Height in 1989 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Historically, the Black Family Reunion has also taken place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. (as recently as 2011) and in other cities across the United States. Today, African American family reunions continue as an intergenerational celebration of community, fellowship, and heritage. Do you and your family host a family reunion? If so, how often? Get ready to take selfies with your second cousin and hear Big Mama tell stories about what your dad was like as a kid: It’s officially the dawn of family reunion season. You always look forward to a good time reconnecting with the relatives, but with everyone in your clan coming in from all over the country and beyond, organizing is no easy feat. That’s why we

made a schedule of everything you’ll need to make this year’s festivities a summer smash. See what you should have in the “done” column from week to week, about a month in advance of the fun. And trust us when we say this: Your Aunty Pearl twice removed will be righteously indignant if you forget to bring the smaller plates for her special German chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Week 4 Be accommodating. The celebration is still almost a month away, but this is no time to rest on your laurels. Make sure everything is in order for hotel stays, arrangements and that contracts with vendors are signed. Triple-check that everyone on the planning committee has clear, set tasks to complete. Get in touch. Schedule a quick touch base by phone or video chat, but you can also leverage shared documents, such as Google Doc spreadsheets, to tick off any remaining assignments. Hey, DJ. If you’ve splurged on a profession-

al turntablist, call and make sure the pro is prepped with bouncy, upbeat and family friendly fare. If you’re relying on streaming services, such as Spotify or Pandora, now’s the time to work on a list of songs. You can be flexible and take requests, but it’s good to have some sounds planned for a long day out in the summer sun. Just don’t let your big brother slip his latest mixtape into the offerings unless he’s the next Drake. Week 3 Game on. Once everyone is done catching up, you’ll need some pre-planned fun to keep spirits high. We’ll have another post detailing some unique twists on common family reunion activities from card games to kiddie-appropriate sports to grown-up gameshows. But whatever you plan to play, you’ll need to make arrangements for any cards, board games, or tools and have them ready to pack.

Kappa League members helping to stop reckless driving

On Thursday, May 27, 2021 after school, the Kappa League members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc assisted the Sherman Park committee on reckless driving and the Grasslyn Manor residents to get the signs out for reckless driving around the city. They stapled more than 500 signs to be passed out to the community. Alderman Khalif J. Rainey has formed the Sherman Park Committee on Reckless Driving. The Committee, which is comprised of leaders from the City and State DOT, business leaders, and residents, has been meeting for the last three months talking about what can be done to address reckless driving. The public will begin to see billboards encouraging drivers to slow down and bus tail ads with the same message. The alderman is working with the residents of Grasslyn Manor where the yard signs are being publicly displayed as a way to remind folks to slow down when driving in Sherman Park. Rainey believes that we all have to work together to stop what is ruining the quality of life in his district.

Legal Representatives of the Children Described Above BACKGROUND INFORMATION. This notice involves a lawsuit known as Jeanine B., et al. v. Tony Evers, et al., which concerns the rights of children described above. If you are one of these children, or if you are the legal representative of one or more of these children, then you should read this notice. The Jeanine B. lawsuit was filed in June 1993 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin (“the Court”). In the lawsuit, the plaintiff children alleged that the foster care system in Milwaukee County failed to comply with its duties to these children under the United States Constitution and certain federal statutes. Supplemental Complaints were filed in 1999 and 2000, after the State of Wisconsin assumed direct responsibility for administering the child welfare system in Milwaukee County effective January 1, 1998. The Court certified this lawsuit as a class action. That means that the lawsuit involves the rights of all members of the class. The lawyers for the parties negotiated a Settlement Agreement, which required the state-administered foster care system in Milwaukee County to meet or exceed certain performance measures that were phased in over a three-year period. The Court approved the Settlement Agreement in December 2002 in a Consent Decree. The Settlement Agreement established interim performance measures to be met by the state Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare (“BMCW”) for the first and second years of the Settlement Agreement implementation period. The Settlement Agreement also established final performance measures to be met by the end of the third year of the implementation period, or until thereafter satisfied for two consecutive six-month periods. The original Settlement Agreement has been modified twice, in 2003 and 2012. The resulting Modified Settlement Agreement now governs the parties. BMCW became a subdivision of the Wisconsin Department of Children (“DCF”) and families in 2008, and was reconfigured as DCF’s Division of Milwaukee Child Protective Services (“DMCPS”) in 2015. DMCPS and Governor Tony Evers, by automatic substitution from the original defendants, are the current defendants in the lawsuit. Defendants have met, and been released from, all but one of the final performance measures included in the Modified Settlement Agreement. The performance measure that has not been met is Section I.D.9., related to placement stability, which is described in the next section. The parties now have agreed to request that the Court approve termination of the Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree based on substantial compliance with the provisions of the Modified Settlement Agreement and the tremendous progress made by the defendants in serving class members since the original Settlement Agreement was approved by the Court in 2002. I.

II. PROPOSED TERMINATION OF THE SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT AND CONSENT DECREE AGREED TO BY THE PARTIES. The remaining provision of the Settlement Agreement from which the defendants have not been released is Section I.D.9., which measures the placement stability of children taken into custody by DMCPS. Defendants have made substantial progress on placement stability and have come close, but not met the Settlement Agreement benchmark. The current Section I.D.9. placement stability benchmark requires calculation of the percentage of children in BMCW custody who have had three or fewer placements during the previous 36 calendar months of their current episode in BMCW custody. The Settlement Agreement provides for defendants to be released from enforcement from each benchmark when the Period 3 standard for that benchmark is met for two successive six-month periods. For the Section I.D.9. placement stability benchmark, the Period 3 standard is 90%. Since 2013, annual performance for this metric has met or exceeded 87% in each year, reaching a high of 89.2% placement stability in year 2019. The parties believe that defendants have achieved substantial compliance with the intent of the I.D.9. placement stability benchmark, and that the time has come to terminate the Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree. To accomplish this termination of the Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree, counsel for the plaintiff class of children and the defendants in this lawsuit have filed a Joint Motion to Terminate the Modified Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree on Basis of Substantial Compliance (“Joint Motion”). If the Court grants the Joint Motion, defendants will be released from the Modified Settlement Agreement and Consent Decree. United States District Judge Pamela Pepper is presiding over this lawsuit. Judge Pepper has authorized distribution of this Notice pursuant to a plan agreed to by the parties, and has approved the public review and comment procedures described below. The proposed release from the Settlement Agreement and Termination of the Consent Decree will become effective if Judge Pepper so orders at the conclusion of these review and comment procedures.
