First African American to win the National Spelling Bee gets offer of full LSU scholarship
Zaila Avant-garde, the teenager who this week became the first African American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, has earned yet another honor: an offer of a full scholarship to Louisiana State University.
That would be before a career at NASA, or as a coach in the NBA, or a career in neuroscience or gene editing, the champion speller said.
"Your academic performance reflected scholarship first! You modeled intellectual excellence," LSU President William F. Tate IV tweeted. "@LSU_Honors awaits. I write to offer you a full scholarship to attend LSU. Here for you!," Tate wrote. The 14-year-old from Har-
vey, LA, told CNN earlier that she hopes to play basketball at Harvard University.
Avant-garde competed against 208 other contestants from five countries to win the championship. She won the July 8th final by correctly spelling the word murraya, a type of tree. Web Photo

Milwaukee Brewers tie for MLB-high with 5 All-Stars The Brewers had three pitchers named to the All-Star team last weekend when the squads were first announced, and that was already enough for a franchise record with (left photo, from left) Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and Josh Hader. However, Woodruff bowed out of the All-Star Game and as a replacement teammate Freddy Peralta (top right photo), the smiling 25-year-old from Moca, Dominican Republic, took his place, which made for four members of the Milwaukee Brewers on the All-Star team. But apparently four Brewers were not enough for the All-Stars as Omar Narváez (bottom right photo) was named as a replacement as well, taking the place of Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, who elected to opt out in favor of rest. That makes a total of five Brewers in the All-Star Game that took place on Tuesday, July 13, 2021. Let's hope this is a start of a new tradition for the Brewers.

County Executive Crowley appoints Amos Morris as the new director of the Milwaukee County Zoo Morris will be the first Black Director to lead the County Zoo Following the retirement of long-time Zoo Director, Chuck Wikenhauser earlier this year, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley announced the appointment of Amos Morris as the next leader of the Milwaukee County Zoo. If confirmed, Morris will be the first Black zoo director in the history of the county. “After enjoying three decades of the expert leadership of Chuck Wikenhauser, I’m happy to announce a new era for the Milwaukee County Zoo with the appointment of Amos Morris as its new director,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “Amos’ thirty-three years of experience
in zoo operations, organizational management, and animal management will serve the County Zoo well as we seek to maintain one of the top zoos in the nation for enrichment, education, and entertainment.” Morris comes to Milwaukee County after serving for three and a half years as the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer for the Fresno (CA) Chaffee Zoo. “The County Zoo has never had Black leadership in its 126-year history and in the spirit of the first focus area of our strategic plan, intentional inclusion, we’re proud to continue building a county government that is representative of the diverse array of

talent our area has to offer,” continued Crowley. “It is a pleasure to welcome Amos back to the Midwest region where he grew up. I hope his appointment will serve as inspiration to young people who’ve never seen someone like them in this important
role before.” “The Zoological Society of Milwaukee is pleased to join County Executive David Crowley in welcoming such an accomplished and respected leader to the Zoo,” said Jodi Gibson, President and CEO of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. “We look forward to partnering with Amos and the staff at the Zoo to advance our shared vision for the Zoo.” In addition to his former roles in Indiana, Morris has held positions at the Pittsburg Zoo & PPG Aquarium, Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island, and the Dallas Zoo. Amos is no stranger to breaking barriers; he was the first Black member of
the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Board of Directors and the first Black Zoo Director of an AZA accredited zoo. Currently, he serves on the AZA Accreditation Commission. “It is an honor to be appointed as the next Director of the County Zoo and be trusted to take the reins after the retirement of its longest-serving director and a zoo professional I deeply respect,” said Amos Morris. “I’m excited to build on the successes of the last three decades and continue to help the Zoo evolve to meet the needs of the animals in our care and the audiences we serve.” www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Declaration of Independence – Week 3 The Second Continental Congress officially adopted the final version of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring the American colonies’ official independence from Great Britain. Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870 and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a paid holiday for federal employees. Today, communities across our nation mark this as a major summer holiday with parades, firework displays and picnics. Using “independence” as this month’s theme, persons were asked to respond to the prompt: ‘What Do You Want to Declare Independence From’ and then provide their declaration of independence. The responses have been personal and candid. This week’s Declaration is from a young adult woman. Due to the frankness of her response, she asked to be identified by a pseudonym.
I declare my independence of not feeling beautiful enough I want to declare my independence of not feeling beautiful enough. All of my life I have looked at others and I see their beautiful faces and I’ve wished I had that beauty. I grew up looking in the mirror and saying to myself, "if only my forehead wasn’t so big, my nose wasn’t so wide and my ears weren’t so big, maybe I would be counted among the beautiful in society." During the pandemic, I felt wearing the mask was not only protecting me from the virus, but it gave me the chance to cover up my face. I began to feel a false sense of freedom and comfort. Eventually, when the restrictions began to ease, it was hard for me to remove the mask because in my mind, now people will see my full, ugly face again.
but I shared with my elderly neighbor my insecurity regarding my looks and wow did she have a lot to say to me on that! To make a long story short, after prayer and regular Bible study, I am feeling so much better. I realize I have been created in the image of God and God loves me because God made me! I cannot express my joy at just being reminded of that. I keep a mask in my car for places that still require masks, but the mask is no longer used to cover up what God has made. Because, I am beautifully and wonderfully made!

During the pandemic I made friends with one of my elderly neighbors in my apartment building. I would stop by to see her because she lived alone and I wanted to make sure she was okay and she had the things she needed. Brought to you by:
Victory Garden is a win for the Harambee Community Kathy Gaillard, freelance contributor Victory Garden Initiative (VGI), located in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood, is a non-profit organization that helps communities grow their own food and creates a community-led, socially just, environmentally sustainable, nutritious food system for residents. With offices located at 249 E. Concordia Ave., and its garden located at 220 E. Concordia Ave., the Victory Garden Initiative is making a positive difference in one of Milwaukee’s ‘food deserts’.
and children how to grow food and has trained more than 60 community food leaders. VGI also hosts an annual, signature event called The Great Milwaukee Victory Garden BLITZ. During the BLITZ, volunteers install hundreds of community gardens in one day. Last year— during the pandemic—VGI received a record demand for garden beds. Pushing themselves to the limit, volunteers installed 500 beds and cumulatively installed more than 5,000 gardens across Milwaukee!
The Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper asked newly appointed Executive Director Michelle Dobbs to share more about Victory Garden Initiative’s programs and her True to its slogan “This is a vision for the nonprofit orgrassroots movement. Move grass. ganization: Grow food.”, Victory Garden initiative teaches residents how to grow food and supplies them with the resources needed to create their own sustainable gardens. VGI was launched in 2009 when a group of community members recognized the negative environmental, social, economic, and health implications of communities like Harambee. The solution for addressing their concerns was to teach and help residents to grow their own food. Since then, VGI has installed more than 3,500 gardens, launched a 1.5-acre urban farm, and planted 26 orchards in low-income neighborhoods. In addition, VGI regularly teaches adults
I became involved with Victory Gardens in October 2020 while the organization was serving the community through the pandemic. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, VGI had pivoted from a ‘share cropping’ format to just giving away food every Friday that was harvested from our gardens. I first joined as a board member and then the board decided to create an Executive Director position, so I resigned from the board to become the Executive Director. This is my dream job! What is your background and why are you so passionate about gardening? I am the owner of Sugarfoot, a consulting house specializing in creativity, community, and culture. I have a degree in Communications and French from Howard University and my professional experience includes working as an educator, nonprofit executive, author, and playwright. I began living the foodways and pathways of my people in my quest to unearth my heritage. I traveled to Senegal, the Gulf of Mexico, the Shawnee National Forest, and The Badlands of South Dakota to explore and live my culture. I’m also an ardent foodie who raises vegetables, fruit, nuts, and herbs at home with my husband, daughters, cats, dog and four chickens. It is
ferent categories where volunteers can plug in.
VGI? I’m giving back in a way that feels really useful to my neighborhood of origin. I can see the difference that VGI is making in this community—people are delighted to be able to grow their own food. Through gardening, we are connecting people to the cycle of life by growing good, tasty food, from garden to plate. I like when people are engaged in what we are doing… This isn’t something alien; it is a place to nourish yourself and we deserve that.
How many people does it take to run an operation like VGI? We have eight fulltime staff, but all our other initiatives are propelled by volunteers. We have about 10-12 volunteers that are 65 and older, about 25-30 kids that assist during the summer, and about 30 families actively involved with this initiative. Some of the volunteers are garden mentors, others help with setting up beds for others, and some share their talents—such as quilting and other ancestral traditions. Some of our volunteers are scientists who participate simply because they are interested in growing things. It’s really the volunteers that help us make this work.
How does one get involved with VGI? It’s quite simple. If residents are already vegetable gardeners, VGI helps them through mentoring. We also find creative ways to grow food right where they are—in their yards, on rooftops or patios – no piece of earth is overlooked. While our neighbor plots are all sold out, we have a variety of other activities for interested individuals. For example, one Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we have a yard party that includes vendors. Neighbors come out and swap seeds and learn gardening tips. Next month, we are taking on a bike trail ride. On Tuesdays, from 3-6 p.m., we have a food pantry, and on Fridays, from noon to 6 p.m. we offer a fresh farm stand where neighbors can come and pick up free produce. U.S. Bank provides update on commitment to addressing economic inequities On June 5, 2020, in the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis, U.S. Bank announced several initiatives to address social and economic inequities, including a $116 million investment to help close the 10:1 racial wealth gap, which affects all U.S. households and creates a 4-6 percent drag on the GDP.* U.S. Bank recently shared that it has made significant progress through its initial investments, creating jobs, providing capital and assistance to small businesses, and increasing development opportunities for employees of color. In February 2021, U.S. Bank introduced the U.S. Bank Access Commitment, a long-term program focused on building wealth and a different approach to serving diverse communities and identifying opportunities for diverse employees. Through this new program, U.S. Bank supports businesses owned by people of color, helping individuals and communities to advance financially and enhance career opportunities by creating a sustainable, inclusive and equitable work environment with leadership development opportunities for all employees
These partners work collaboratively implementing financial coaching, housing stabilization and new homeownership opportunities along with workforce advancement programming. U.S. Bank has listened to its community partners and trusted in their guidance of these investments to address the critical community needs we are faced with today and begin to address longterm systems change. While philanthropy can’t solve these challenges alone, U.S. Bank believes funding access to capital for critical financial coaching, housing and homeownership, workforce
advancement and other critical programming will begin to address the economic disparities that have challenged so many for too long. “We have deep seeded relationships with our nonprofit partners across the country and look to their expertise to help guide our critical investments in communities,” said Suzanne Zwaska, vice president of community affairs for U.S. Bank in Wisconsin.
and chief diversity officer for U.S. Bank. “The entire company and people from every area of the business are now part of the solution. Our goal is to achieve economic inclusion, bringing our core competency as a bank to help address the wealth disparities, and underlying systemic problems that prevent economic mobility for everyone. There is so much yet to do.”

The comprehensive fund builds on the bank’s initial $116 million investments which includes $100 million in additional capital to Blackowned businesses, double Black suppliers, $15 million Rebuild and Transform fund and $1 million in grants to Black-led Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). U.S. Bank addressing economic inequities (Continued from pg. 10) to listen and learn from its employees. In Milwaukee, the Market Leader Nina Johnson created “Circles,” a program designed to bring local employees together for the purpose of courageous conversations in a safe space. Circles gave the employees an opportunity to speak transparently to a small group of fellow bankers about the impact civil unrest and the pandemic were having on their daily activities. No topics were off limits and the only rule was to respect everyone’s perspectives within their small group. The initiative was originally created for one department, but the concept resonated with several business lines, creating a greater level of diversity of thought. Participants ranged from tellers to commercial bank-

with varying perspectives as needed. Topics ranged from intersectionality to microaggressions in the workplace. The initiative also included quarterly guest speakers and resources from organizations such as Catalyst, Inc. and McKinsey & Co. This Fall, Circles will become one of several initiatives launched by Johnson and fellow market leaders throughout U.S. Bank’s national footprint. The bank’s Midwest Regional Executive Steve Saloutos also launched a new initiative for emerging women in its Consumer and Business Banking Department called ASPIRE, a career development program designed to mentor and prepare the next generation of female leaders in banking for senior leadership. “When we take time to listen to each other, we become great leaders and even better human beings,” said Johnson. In the Community Over the summer, U.S.
Bank will be partnering with the Milwaukee Public Museum and the Milwaukee Brewers on the #MyMandela67 pledge. A series of events and initiatives focused on Nelson Mandela International Day, July 18. The My Mandela Challenge encourages volunteers to spend 67 minutes of service to others, as a way to give back to the community. The 67 minutes represents 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice. As part of U.S. Bank Milwaukee’s sponsorship, its employees donate 67 hours of volunteer time this summer. Digital Banking “Digital has become a key component of U.S. Bank’s customer focused strategy and it has provided customers with the fiscal resources needed to complement their lifestyles. U.S. Bank’s digital banking technology is one of the most important aspects of banking that will revolutionize the financial services industry for years to come. Knowing that our bankers can virtually meet with their retail or business banker via mobile application was a timely solution at the height of the pandemic and it continues to set us apart when serving our customers today,” said Johnson. Business unusual—COVID and vaccinations By Sandra Millon Underwood, RN, PhD, FAAN Professor, UW-Milwaukee College of Nursing From lotteries, to scholarships, to free tickets to various entertainment venues, across the nation communities continue to identify creative ways to persuade people to get COVID-19 vaccinations. Some of the most vulnerable populations— like African Americans— are experiencing the lowest percentage of vaccinations. For example, according to the Wisconsin Immunization Registry, as of the end of June only about 6,200 residents in Milwaukee’s 53206 ZIP code have received one dose of the vaccine, accounting for 27 percent of the population. In the 53210 ZIP code, about 8,200 people, or 30 percent of the population, have received the vaccine. Several efforts are now being employed—including community health care workers going door-todoor—to help bolster those numbers and ensure vulnerable populations are vaccinated. In addition, some small business owners are quietly using their platforms to help persuade individuals as well. Long-time barber and owner of Ray’s Clippers Hair Styling Salon and Men’s Barbershop Health Initiative leader, Ray Bufford is one such individual. “I’ve been vaccinated and I spend a lot of time talking with customers about the vaccine when they come into my shop. I try to persuade
Barber Ray Bufford them to get the vaccinations. The argument that seems to work best is when I can convince them that if they don’t do it (get vaccinated) for themselves, get the vaccine for their loved ones. “I’ve been a barber for a long time so I try to talk to customers who first came to me as children and now they have their own children. Our younger generation is a whole different species. Even after telling them that getting the vaccine is a life or death situation, it’s sometimes difficult to get people to change their minds. You can lecture them all day and night, but sometimes they just don’t listen. The only thing that works for some people is just getting down to their level and bluntly telling them, ‘if you care about your family, just get the vaccine’,” said Bufford. Many employers, especially small businesses and organizations that are already experiencing worker shortages, have been reluctant to impose workplace vaccination mandates. That may change in the coming months once the vaccines receive full regulatory approval. In early May, Pfizer applied
An NCON Communications Publication
to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Moderna Inc., announced on June 1 that it has begun the submission process. Some attorneys predict an uptick in employer mandates if the FDA grants their requests. In general, employers have the legal authority to mandate vaccinations, but that also comes with obligations related to protecting employees’ records of inoculations. In a sign that the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact is waning and vaccines are having a positive impact on the spread of the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that fully vaccinated people may resume their pre-COVID-19 pandemic activities without wearing masks, except where required by, among other things, federal or state law and local business and workplace guidance and rules. While this is welcome news for many, the CDC’s announcement has also left employers wondering whether they still need to, or should, require fully vaccinated employees to wear face coverings consistent with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) COVID-19 nonmandatory guidance. The workplace safety agency has instructed employers to follow the CDC’s recent mask guidance for employees who are fully vaccinated. OSHA’s announcement does not apply to activities in the health care industry, and it plans to update its non-mandatory COVID-19
safety and health guidance based on the CDC’s new mask guidance. Although OSHA has given employers the “green light” to permit fully vaccinated employees to stop wearing face coverings in the workplace, employers must still adhere to state and
local mandates. Jim Gaillard, Vice President of Ezekiel CDC/Project Hope (Ezekiel) and a master electrician, acknowledges that his organization does not mandate the vaccinations. Ezekiel CDC is a non-profit organization that trains unemployed and underemployed individuals in the construction trades to rehab homes and sell them to first-time homeowners. The organization’s office is in Milwaukee’s Amani neighborhood, ZIP code 53206, and most of the organization’s trainees reside in this neighborhood.
Because of the nature of their industry, Ezekiel CDC is subject to OSHA’s guidelines. While Gaillard and the administrative staff have received the COVID-19 vaccination, convincing some of the trainees to get vaccinated has been challenging. The non-profit does require trainees to wear masks and practice social distancing if they are not vaccinated, but convincing trainees about the merits of getting the COVID-19 vaccine has mostly fallen on deaf ears. “We don’t require our trainees to get vaccinated, but we encourage them to do so. Unfortunately, many of the trainees have had negative encounters with law enforcement. In fact, some became involved with Ezekiel CDC while they were inmates at the Milwaukee County House of Corrections and began their training with us under the Huber Law. Because of their life experiences—to put it bluntly—they don’t trust white people. Their refusal to get vaccinated is based on trust issues. It’s difficult for us to break through those kinds of barriers,” said Gaillard.

5. Learn more about finding credible vaccine information. When you come across COVID-19 information, cross-check with CDC.gov and learn how to respond to misinformation you encounter. 6. Make your decision to get vaccinated visible and celebrate it! (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) **** The COVID-19 Awareness, Understanding, Screening, Surveillance, Social Support, Education and Empowerment Project is encouraging COVID-19 vaccinations among men, women, and youth (12 years of age and older) in Southeastern Wisconsin by increasing public awareness and understanding about COVID-19; increasing access to resources essential to COVID-19 prevention and control in venues where Black Americans work, worship and are otherwise engaged; and, providing resources for navigation to COVID-19 screening and COVID-19 vaccination. The project, which aims to ensure that no one is left without and that no one is left behind, is supported by the Anthem Foundation. For more information about the project and access to available COVID-19 awareness, prevention, and control resources, contact Dr. Sandra Millon Underwood at underwoo@uwm.edu. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com
