North- King Stepping Together—United at a 50 year class reunion In 2017, Brenda Wilkerson from North Division High School and Warren McIver from Rufus King High School got together and talked about the low turnout from their 40th individual class reunions. They discussed trying a combined class reunion and making it a Grand Celebration. Each took the idea back to their individual committees. Brenda and Warren got their committees' consent for a joint class reunion for both schools which had never been done before. North and Rufus King’s first meeting was held in January 2018. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were not able to have the joint reunion until recently, when they were able to have a three-day joint cerebration July 15, 16 and 17, 2022. "North and Rufus King’s 50 Year Class Reunion" celebration exceeded everyone's expectations. Photos by Yvonne Kemp

Nichelle Nichols, trailblazing 'Star Trek' actress, dies at 89 Actress and singer Nichelle Nichols, best known for her groundbreaking portrayal of Lt. Nyota Uhura in "Star Trek: The Original Series," has died at age 89, according to a statement from her son, Kyle Johnson. "Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration," Johnson said in a statement shared to Nichols' official site on Sunday. "Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all." Nichols died from natural causes, he said. Nichols portrayed communications officer Lt. Nyota Uhura in the "Star Trek" TV series and many of its film offshoots. When "Star Trek" began in 1966, Nichols was a television rarity: a black woman in a notable role on a primetime television series. There had been African American women on TV before, but
they often played domestic workers and had small roles; Nichols' Uhura was an integral part of the multicultural "Star Trek" crew. The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., called it "the first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a black woman in television history." Nichols is widely known for participating in one of the first interracial kisses on US television when her character kissed James T. Kirk, portrayed by white Canadian actor William Shatner. In an interview with CNN in 2014, Nichols said the kiss scene "changed television forever, and it also changed the way people looked at one another." After "Trek's" three-season run, Nichols dedicated herself to the space program. She helped NASA in making the agency more diverse, helping to recruit astronauts Sally Ride, Judith Resnik and Guion Bluford, among others. George Takei, who portrayed the USS Enterprise's helmsman Hikaru Sulu, posted a touching tribute to
his co-star. "I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89," wrote Takei on Twitter. "For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend. "We lived long and prospered together," he added with a photo of the pair making the iconic Vulcan salute. The National Air and Space Museum called Nichols "an inspiration to many, not just
for her groundbreaking work on Star Trek but also through her work with NASA to recruit women and people of color to apply to become astronauts" on Twitter. Stacey Abrams, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in Georgia, also posted a tribute to the actress. "Godspeed to Nichelle Nichols, champion, warrior and tremendous actor," wrote Abrams on Twitter alongside a photo of herself with Nichols. "Her kindness and bravery lit the path for many. May she forever dwell among the stars." Nichols was born Grace Dell Nichols near Chicago in 1932. (Unhappy with Grace, she took the name Nichelle when she was a teenager.) Her grandfather was a white Southerner who married a black woman, causing a rift in his family. Blessed with a four-octave vocal range, Nichols was performing in local clubs by the time she was 14. Among the performers she met was Duke Ellington, who later took her on tour. She also worked extensively in Chicago clubs and in theater.
She moved to Los Angeles in the early '60s and landed a role in a Gene Roddenberry series, "The Lieutenant." A number of "Star Trek" veterans, including Leonard Nimoy, Walter Koenig and Majel Barrett, also worked on the show. When Roddenberry was creating "Trek," he remembered Nichols. She was in Europe when she got the call. "(My agent said), 'They're doing 'Star Trek,' and I didn't know what a 'Star Trek' was," she said in an interview with the Television Academy. Uhura wasn't in the original script, and Nichols was responsible for the name. She was reading a book called "Uhuru" -- "freedom" in Swahili -- and suggested her character take the name. Roddenberry thought it was too harsh. "I said, 'Well, why don't you do an alteration of it, soften the end with an 'A,' and it'll be Uhura?' " she recalled. "He said, 'That's it, that's your name! You named it; it's yours'." Nichols is survived by her son, Kyle Johnson.
NBA legend and civil rights activist Bill Russell dies at 88 NBA legend Bill Russell, an 11-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics and the first black head coach in the league, passed away "peacefully" Sunday, July 31, 2022, according to a family statement from his verified Twitter account. He was 88. "It is with a very heavy heart we would like to pass along to all of Bill's friends, fans, and followers," the statement reads. "Bill Russell, the most prolific winner in American sports history, passed away peacefully today at age 88, with his wife, Jeannine, by his side. Arrangements for his memorial service will be announced soon." In addition to his sporting achievements, Russell was one of sport's leading civil rights activists and marched alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., when he gave his "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963. He also supported iconic boxer Muhammad Ali in his opposition to being drafted into military service. Former US President Barack Obama took to social media to praise Russell's contribution to both basketball and society. "Today, we lost a giant. As tall as Bill Russell stood, his legacy rises far higher -- both as a player and as a person," he said. "Perhaps more than anyone else, Bill knew what it took to win and what it took to lead. On the court, he was the greatest champion in basketball history. Off of it, he was a civil rights trailblazer -marching with Dr. King and standing with Muhammad An HTGroup, LLC Publication
Ali. "For decades, Bill endured insults and vandalism, but never let it stop him from speaking up for what's right. I learned so much from the way he played, the way he coached, and the way he lived his life. Michelle and I send our love to Bill's family, and everyone who admired him." Russell won 11 championships with the Celtics, including eight straight from 1959 to 1966. He was a fivetime NBA MVP and a 12time All-Star. As a coach for the Celtics, he led Boston to two titles, becoming the first black head coach to win an NBA championship. "Bill's two state championships in high school offered a glimmer of the incomparable run of pure team accomplishment to come: twice an NCAA champion; captain of a gold-medal-winning US Olympic team; 11 times an NBA champion; and at the helm for two NBA championships as the first black head coach of any North American professional sports team," the family statement continued. "Along the way, Bill earned a string of individual awards that stands unprecedented as it went unmentioned by him. In 2009, the award for the NBA Finals most valuable player was renamed after two- time Hall of Famer as the 'Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award.' "Bill's wife, Jeannine, and his many friends and family thank you for keeping Bill in your prayers. Perhaps you'll
relive one or two of the golden moments he gave us, or recall his trademark laugh as he delighted in explaining the real story behind how those moments unfolded. And we hope each of us can find a new way to act or speak up with Bill's uncompromising, dignified and always constructive commitment to principle. That would be one last, and lasting, win for our beloved #6." The Celtics issued a statement lauding Russell and his contribution to both the team and the sport as a whole. "To be the greatest champion in your sport, to revolutionize the way the game is played, and to be a societal leader all at once seems unthinkable, but that is who Bill Russell was," the statement read. "Bill Russell's DNA is woven through every element of the Celtics organization, from the relentless pursuit of excellence, to the celebration of team rewards over individual glory, to a commitment to social justice and civil rights off the court. Our thoughts are with his family

Being Frank
By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times
Are you tired yet? In the USA there is a disconnect in many African American relationships. You have African American women who have to be strong because of the racist paradigm created by US society. On the other hand, you have the most hated male on the planet, the African American male. In this land of plenty you would think that with the gains African Americans have made the relationships would be strong in 2022. Well… I have one question, “African American females, aren’t you tired of the weak, effeminate African American male that seems to be the norm in the USA?” We won’t go into the African American male neutering that has taken place in the USA for 500 years. I know about the prison industrial complex and how African American males are caged. I understand the mental sabotage that racism has perpetrated on the African American male. I get this. My question is to the African American females out there. We are talking about the insane situation many African American females are
in because they seem to want weak African American men. I know at one point in time women wanted the man with the benefits. Well, years later it turns out the man with the benefits is also the one with the lesser morals and possible male lover. Welcome to the United Stated of America. African American females have been on the front line so long in the USA until they suffer from PTSD. Kudos to the African American females who have held or are holding their families together. My question is to these and other strong females. Aren’t you tired of these weak African American males who have the morals and freakishness of a Caucasian? African
American females, why are you still coddling grown men while raising him and the children? Is having insurance that important? Is coming home and using an electric garage door opener to park your 2021 vehicle that major? What makes this situation bizarre is that many African American females make good money in their profession. Why then do these African American females seek this incompetent male? I understand that no one wants to be alone. Many African Americans do not want to get in their fifties and be alone. Yet, how many African American females in 2022 are going into their late 30’s and are either divorced
or getting there? Why? The man with the benefits didn’t work out. Now, the African American female is stuck with kids by a man who she has no love for. Can you say bitter? How many times have you seen an African American female who seems to have it going on and shook your head when you met her love interest? This phenomenon isn’t limited to the professional African American female. This crazy lust for weak African American males by African American females is not a class- or money-based situation. Some African American females say all the good African American males are locked up or with white women. True, there are a number of African American males incarcerated in the USA. African American females, do not think that an African American male who is with a white woman is a good one. The African American male who chooses white women over African American females are weak. African American females don’t shed a tear over these mind-wiped simpletons. Let the Caucasians of both sexes
have him. There are many African American females who say many African American males are pursuing an alternative lifestyle. This may be true. Five years from now this statement will have more truth with the gender issues in the USA. African American females, don’t lose sleep over these men either. Wave goodbye. Why African American female? Why are so many together African American females settling for weak African American men, then complaining when it doesn’t work? Think: If you have a pocket full of lint, then your pocket is full. Lint is worthless. When money does come, you have nowhere to put it. For many families, it’s that time of year when students return to school. Parents and children are adjusting to starting school, whether that involves going to a new school or transitioning back to their previous school. This can be easy for some families, while others may be worried or anxious about how their child will cope with returning to school. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, it is important to make sure your child gets off to a good start because it can influence your child’s attitude, confidence, and social and academic performance. To help improve adjustment and decrease difficulties, it is necessary for parents to be prepared. The following suggestions from the American Psychological Association may be helpful for parents to help their child transition back to school.

Election 2022: Fall Primary
Thursday, Aug. 04, 2022
Notice of Partisan Primary and Special Election and Sample Ballot August 9, 2022 OFFICE OF THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSION TO THE VOTERS OF THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE: Notice is hereby given of a partisan primary and special election to be held in the City of Milwaukee on August 9, 2022, at which the nominees for the offices named below shall be chosen. The names of the candidates for each office, whose nominations have been certified to or filed in this office, are given under the title of the office under the appropriate party, each in its proper column, together with the questions submitted to a vote, if any, in the sample ballot below. Information to Voters Upon entering the polling place and before being permitted to vote, a voter shall: • state their name and address • show an acceptable form of photo identification* • sign the poll book** *If a voter does not have acceptable photo identification, the voter may obtain a free photo ID for voting from the Division of Motor Vehicles. **If the voter is unable to sign the poll book due to disability, a poll worker may write the word “exempt.” If a voter is not registered to vote, they may register to vote at the polling place serving their residence if the voter provides proof of residence. Where ballots are distributed to voters, the initials of two inspectors must appear on the ballot. Upon being permitted to vote, the voter shall enter a voting booth or go to a machine and cast their ballot. The vote should not be cast in any manner other than specified here. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the voter in marking their ballot may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked. A voter who is a parent or guardian may be accompanied by the voter’s minor child or minor ward. An election official may inform the voter of the proper manner for casting a vote but the official may not advise or indicate a particular voting choice. Assistance for Voting A voter may select an individual to assist in casting their vote if the voter declares to the presiding official that they are unable to read, have difficulty reading, writing, or understanding English, or that due to disability are unable to cast their ballot. The selected individual rendering assistance may not be the voter’s employer or an agent of that employer or an officer or agent of a labor organization which represents the voter. If a voter is unable to state their name and address, an assistant may also do so for the voter. At the partisan primary, the voter shall select the party of their choice. Voting for candidates of more than one party may invalidate the ballot. The voter must cast a vote for individual candidates. Where Optical Scan Voting is Used • If a party preference is designated, and votes are cast for ballot candidates of another party or write-in votes are cast in another party, only votes cast in the designated party will count. • If a party preference is not designated, and votes are cast for candidates (or write-in votes are cast) in more than one party, no votes will be counted. Within the party of their choice, the voter shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of their choice for each office for which they intend to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall write in the name of the person of their choice in the space provided for a write-in vote and fill in the oval next to the write-in line. On referendum questions, the voter shall fill in the oval next to “yes” if in favor of the question, or the voter shall fill in the oval next to “no” if opposed to the question. When using an electronic ballot marking device (“ExpressVote”) to mark an optical scan ballot, the voter shall touch the screen or use the tactile pad to select the party of their choice. The voter shall then touch the screen at the name of the candidate of their choice for each office for which they intend to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall type in the name of the person of their choice in the space provided for a write-in vote. On referendum questions, the voter shall touch the screen at “yes” if in favor of the question, or the voter shall touch the screen at “no” if opposed to the question. Spoiled Ballots If a voter spoils an optical scan ballot, they shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one voter. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the voter shall return it to the election official, who shall issue a proper ballot in its place. After Voting the Ballot After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it may be inserted in the security sleeve, so the marks do not show. The voter shall then insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. If a central count system is used, the voter shall insert the ballot in the ballot box and discard the sleeve or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. The voter shall leave the polling place promptly.
