Who will Joe Biden pick as his Vice President nominee?

Kamala Harris

Elizabeth Warren

Joe Biden will make the all-important decision about who will be his vice presidential candidate in the coming days. A former vice president himself, Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has committed to selecting a woman as his running mate, and a number of high-profile public figures are seen as the top contenders. While he is expected to make a decision next week, Biden is unlikely to publicly announce whom he is selecting until the second week of August, according to a source familiar with the process. Still, as the decision nears, here’s a look at who Biden is considering and why. Kamala Harris The California senator has long been seen as the top

contender to be Biden's running mate. Harris would be the first Black woman and first Indian American woman to have such a position on a ticket, which would make her a historic choice. Most Democrats also see Harris as a safe choice; someone who would be ready to serve as president and who would meet calls for this Democratic ticket to represent the party's diversity. At the same time, there are some reasons why Biden might not pick her. For starters, she and Biden clashed memorably on the debate stage last summer, and there have been recent reports that some in Biden's orbit may be holding a grudge. Last week, it was reported that former Sen. Chris Dodd,

who is a part of Biden’s vice presidential search committee, was taken aback by Harris’s response when asked why she chose to launch an attack on Biden in the debate. “She laughed and said, ‘that’s politics.’ She had no remorse,” Dodd said, according to Politico. But a Biden ally said the former vice president quickly moved on from the ambush after the debate, and that the comments won’t influence his decision-making. Elizabeth Warren Biden has spoken to the Massachusetts senator a handful of times in recent months because he has wanted to incorporate some of her policy ideas. Biden, for example, received some help from Warren when it came time to put together a hefty

economic proposal which he has unveiled in recent weeks. “It’s a testament to Warren’s attention to detail and her savviness on policy,” one Biden ally said. Warren has made it known in no uncertain terms that she wants the VP job. “Yes,” she told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow without hesitation when the host asked her if she would accept an offer from Biden. At the same time, some Democrats are skeptical that Biden would pick Warren. With a big lead in some of the polls, they say choosing the senator would be too risky. And on the heels of the protests on racial equality, they say Biden should select a woman of color. Susan Rice The former national securi-

ty adviser checks all the boxes on Biden's wish list for his running mate. Those around the former vice president say Rice is a logical choice for Biden mostly because he worked so closely alongside her as vice president and he has said he prefers a running mate who is “simpatico with me.” “When he says he wants someone ready to be president on Day 1, she fits the bill,” the Biden ally said. Some Democrats worry that a Rice pick could reignite the Republican talking points on the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. In 2012, Rice appeared on several Sunday talk shows, saying the attack on the (Continued on page 2)

Milwaukee Public Library opens state-of-the-art Good Hope branch

On Wednesday, July 29, 2020 the Milwaukee Public Library’s (MPL) Good Hope Branch, 7717 W. Good Hope Road, hosted its grand opening. This state-of-the-art, mixed-use development has been in the works for several years. The Good Hope Branch is the first library to reopen amid the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. The new branch features meeting spaces, a makers room, a children’s area, greater access to technology, and much more. While some restrictions will apply, access to computers and Wi-Fi, book pick-ups and reference services will be available. The branch is a $6.35-million investment in the neighborhood and replaces the former Mill Road Branch Library. At 18,400 square feet, the Good Hope Branch Library is the third largest branch in the system, following Mitchell Street Branch at 23,000 An NCON Communications Publication

square feet and Washington Park at 20,000 square feet. The new library branch is housed in the lower level of a 65-unit affordable housing apartment complex designed by Engberg Anderson. The vibrant library space however was designed by Zimmerman Architectural Studios. Pictured at the library's opening are (from left) Alderwoman Chantia Lewis; Journey House Chief Executive Officer and MPL Bord of Directors President Dr. Michele Bria, Milwaukee Public School Board of Directors President and MPL Board Trustee Mark Sain; State Representative LaKeshia Meyers; incoming MPL director and city librarian Joan R. Joe Biden's VP pick (Continued from pg. 1) was the result of a protest that turned violent instead of a planned terrorist attack. The administration later concluded it was a terrorist attack. Democrats also fear that the fact Rice has never run for elected office could be a flaw, particularly in a political climate where anything goes.

member of Congress to being the vice president and maybe president is a big leap,” another Biden ally said. Tammy Duckworth The junior senator from Illinois earned a spot on Biden’s short list because she embodies American patriotism, something near and dear to Biden. The veteran who lost both legs in the Iraq war and received the Purple Heart, got to know Biden and his wife, Jill, when she worked as an assistant secretary in the Department of Veteran Affairs. Both Bidens became involved in issues and policies concerning veterans. She was also named the most effective first term Democratic senator in the 115th Congress by the Center for Effective Lawmaking, a partnership between Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia. But some Biden allies cast some doubts about her strength on economic issues, which is and will continue to be one of the central issues with the nation facing record high unemployment.

Karen Bass The California congresswoman’s stock rose with Team Biden in recent weeks during the final stages of the search, with various members of Congress including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA.) vouching for her. Biden allies think Bass, who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, has gained favor internally because she is largely seen as a well-liked congresswoman who could be a no-drama, no-risk selection for Biden. On Friday, the Sacramento Bee published an unsigned editorial asking Biden to pick Bass over Harris. “If Biden chooses a California VP, he likely won't pick Karen Bass,” the board wrote. “Clearly, however, the community activist whose passion for service led others to draft her into electoral politics is the better choice.” The big question surrounding Bass is whether she Val Demings is ready for the position. ida since 2017; she served as police chief in Orlando after a long career there as an officer. Demings has been an outspoken voice in the House on issues related to gun control and law enforcement; and served as an impeachment manager in the Senate trial of President Trump. Demings and Biden do not have a longstanding relationship, but they campaigned together for Florida Democrats during the 2018 elections. Demings is a strong campaigner with a résumé that matches the moment, and she comes from a crucial part of the country’s biggest swing state. But she has not been closely vetted by the press and her experience in elected office is relatively brief.

with the coronavirus pandemic and answering the calls for police reform and racial justice; quickly called for the firing of the officer who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks and then announced new restrictions on the use of force by police; made criminal justice reform a major priority, including strictly limiting the use of cash bail.

Bottoms was an early supporter of Mr. Biden in the presidential race, serving as a fiercely loyal campaign surrogate, even when he was down in the polls. Bottoms has cut an impressive figure during a national reckoning over race and policing, and she hails from a crucial political battleground. But her short time in high office could be an obstacle.

DMV explains steps to obtain an ID to vote Most Wisconsin voters already have some form of ID needed to vote, including a Wisconsin driver license or ID. There is no separate “voter ID” and a federally compliant REAL ID card is not required for voting purposes. The Wisconsin Elections Commission provides a list of acceptable options to bring to the polls on its website, bringit.wi.gov. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) explains the steps for voters looking to get their first Wisconsin ID. Voters should visit DMV’s website, wisconsindmv.gov/ idcards, for information and a list of the documents that will be required. Certain documents, such as a birth certificate, proof of identity and Wisconsin residency, are necessary to obtain an official Wisconsin ID card. Voters should bring the required documents to a DMV Customer Service Center to apply. If all documentation

is not readily available, the ID Petition Process (IDPP) can be used to obtain a receipt valid for voting while the remaining documents or verifications are obtained. The voter should bring any documentation available to the DMV and complete the required application. DMV offers this IDPP service and ID card for voting purposes free of charge. Voters will receive a receipt that is valid for voting purposes and can be used to show at the polls. Anyone who doesn’t have an ID to vote in the August primary should begin the process now. DMV’s tollfree voter ID hotline at (844) 588-1069 is available for questions on obtaining an ID to vote. Questions regarding voter eligibility, poll locations, voter registration information or other election information can be directed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

Meet Tim Rogers candidate for U.S. Congressional District 4

Hi, my name is Tim Rogers. I have been in the city of Milwaukee for more than 50 years. I have my roots in this city and I have watched it being taken down by tradition and the conditioning of the Milwaukee voter. The conditioning of the voter who votes for the Democratic progressive systemic machine and is never taught that the machine is their enemy.

The month of August is known for many things, such as it is the end of the dog days of summer that began on July 3; it marks the peak time for picking squash, melons, corn, eggplant, tomatoes and cucumbers in most parts of our country; and is the birth month of well-known people such as Barack Obama, Peter O’Toole and Cameron Diaz. But, did you know August is also celebrated as Kids Eat Right Month? According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, August is a great time to re-evaluate your family’s eating and physical activity habits and take steps to make positive, healthful changes. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has developed media materials to encourage families to begin implementing healthier eating. Portions of the Academy’s article are offered here: Shop Smart. Election 2020: Sample Ballot

Thursday, August 06, 2020

Notice of Partisan Primary and Sample Ballots August 11, 2020 OFFICE OF THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSION TO THE VOTERS OF THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE: Notice is hereby given of a partisan primary to be held in the City of Milwaukee on August 11, 2020, at which the nominees for the offices named below shall be chosen. The names of the candidates for each office, whose nominations have been certified to or filed in this office, are given under the title of the office under the appropriate party, each in its proper column, together with the questions submitted to a vote, if any, in the sample ballot included with this notice. Information to Voters Upon entering the polling place, a voter shall state his or her name and address, show an acceptable form of photo identification and sign the poll book before being permitted to vote. If a voter does not have acceptable photo identification, the voter may obtain a free photo ID for voting from the Division of Motor Vehicles. If a voter is not registered to vote, a voter may register to vote at the polling place serving his or her residence, if the voter presents proof of residence in a form specified by law. Where ballots are distributed to voters, the initials of two inspectors must appear on the ballot. Upon being permitted to vote, the voter shall retire alone to a voting booth and cast his or her ballot except that a voter who is a parent or guardian may be accompanied by the voter’s minor child or minor ward. An election official may inform the voter of the proper manner for casting a vote, but the official may not in any manner advise or indicate a particular voting choice. At the partisan primary, the voter shall select the party of his or her choice. Voting for candidates of more than one party may invalidate the ballot. The voter must cast a vote for individual candidates. Where Optical Scan Voting is used • If a party preference is designated, and votes are cast for ballot candidates of another party or writein votes are cast in another party, only votes cast in the designated party will count. • If a party preference is not designated, and votes are cast for candidates (or write-in votes are cast) in more than one party, no votes will be counted Within the party of his or her choice, the voter shall fill in the oval next to the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall write in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote and fill in the oval next to the write-in line. When using an electronic ballot marking device (“Automark” or “Express Vote”) to mark an optical scan ballot, the voter shall touch the screen at the party of his or her choice. The voter shall then touch the screen at the name of the candidate of his or her choice for each office for which he or she intends to vote. To vote for a person whose name does not appear on the ballot, the voter shall type in the name of the person of his or her choice in the space provided for a write-in vote. The vote should not be cast in any other manner. Not more than five minutes’ time shall be allowed inside a voting booth. Sample ballots or other materials to assist the voter in marking his or her vote may be taken into the booth and copied. The sample ballot shall not be shown to anyone so as to reveal how the ballot is marked. Spoiled Ballots If a voter spoils an optical scan ballot, he or she shall return it to an election official who shall issue another ballot in its place, but not more than three ballots shall be issued to any one voter. If the ballot has not been initialed by two inspectors or is defective in any other way, the voter shall return it to the election official, who shall issue a proper ballot in its place. After Voting the Ballot After an official optical scan ballot is marked, it shall be inserted in the security sleeve, so the marks do not show. The voter shall then insert the ballot in the voting device and discard the sleeve or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. If a central count system is used, the voter shall insert the ballot in the ballot box and discard the sleeve or deliver the ballot to an inspector for deposit. The voter shall leave the polling place promptly. YOU’VE GOTTA KNOW WHEN IT’S TIME TO TAKE A WALK. Gaming can be harmless entertainment. Plan a night out with friends. Enjoy an occasional escape from the dog-eat-dog world. The trick, of course, is to set affordable limits, to know when to quit and try your luck another day. If you can’t, and it’s affecting your life, help is at hand. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLE-5 (1-800-426-2535), text 850-888-HOPE, or visit wi-problemgamblers.org. A message brought to you by the Wisconsin Lottery.
