Photos by Yvonne Kemp

On Saturday, August 7, 2021, the African American Breastfeeding Network (AABN) hosted the "Well Mommy and Baby Care Package Drive-Up," at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2207 N. 2nd St. The drive-up event celebrated not only "Bronzeville Week" but also "National Breastfeeding Awareness Month." Expectant and new mothers drove up to receive care packages that would help both them and their new child get off on a good and healthy start. The event was organized by AABN Executive Director Dalvery Blackwell (left photo, second from left) and featured volunteers from Mt. Zion Baptist Church and even Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs (left photo, third from right) joined in to lend a hand.

Who is Kenny Bednarek? The Wisconsin native who scored silver in Olympic upset American Noah Lyles was a favorite to win gold in the highly-competitive men's 200m final Wednesday, August 4, 2021, but it was Canadian Andre de Grasse and Wisconsin's Kenny Bednarek who finished first in the Tokyo Olympics event.

bronze as his first Olympic medal. It was a three-man battle between de Grasse, Bednarek and Lyles until the Canadian edged ahead in the final meters. Bednarek was always a medal contender in the race, but his finish ahead of Lyles marked a surprising end to the highly anticipated race.

De Grasse won his fifth Olympic medal and his first gold in the race, followed by Bednarek claiming silver and Lyles taking bronze. Bednarek set a new personal best of 19.68 seconds with his finish. Lyles entered the race as the gold medal favorite before coming away with

IRS warns of child tax credit scams The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is warning taxpayers of ongoing scams related to the child tax credit — with some landing directly in Americans’ email or smartphone. “Right now we’re seeing scammers trying to take advantage of the American public by attempting to gain information — using phone calls, emails, text messages, through social media — all attempting to target families eligible for this credit,” Jim Lee, chief of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division told ABC News. The IRS said families who qualify for the child tax credit, which was expanded as part of President Joe Biden’s $1.9-trillion American Rescue Plan, would receive monthly payments without taking any further action.

Initial eligibility was based on 2019 or 2020 tax returns. “For tax year 2021, the child tax credit is increased from $2,000 per qualifying child to: $3,600 for children ages 5 and under at the end of 2021; and $3,000 for children ages 6 through 17 at the end of 2021,” according to the IRS. Walmart to pay total cost of college tuition and books for associates

The largest U.S. private employer commits to invest nearly $1 billion over the next five years in career-driven training and development On July 27, 2021, Walmart announced it will pay 100 percent of college tuition and books for associates through its Live Better U (LBU) education program. Starting Aug. 16, the $1 a day fee will be removed for associates, making all education programs paid for by Walmart. This means approximately 1.5 million parttime and full-time Walmart and Sam’s Club associates in the U.S. can earn college degrees or learn trade skills without the burden of education debt. As the largest U.S. private employer, Walmart is committing to invest nearly $1-billion over the next five years in career-driven training and development. “We are creating a path of opportunity for our associates to grow their careers at Walmart, so they can continue to build better lives for themselves and their families,” said Lorraine Stomski, Senior Vice President of Learning and Leadership at Walmart. “This investment is another way we can support our associates to pursue their passion and purpose while removing the barriers that
