St. Ann's Center Bucyrus Campus moves Town Bank set to open in new central city location one more step closer on band shell and park construction project

The St. Ann's Center Bucyrus Campus hosted the Good Earth Celebration on Friday, August 11, 2017. The event highlighted a major soil cleanup already underway on the center’s 7.5 acre campus that will enable construction of a brand new community band shell at 2450 W. North Ave. The St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care is a community-based day care organization for children, the elderly and adults with
disabilities. The cleanup has been years in the making, according to Sister Edna Lonergan, president of the St. Ann Center. “Years ago when we were planning to build our north side campus, we had a picnic for people in the neighborhood and asked what they would like to see on this property,” she said. “They said they would love a walkway lined with trees and lit up to create a safe place to
walk and meditate and be at home with God and nature.” The walkway will lead to the Indaba Community Band Shell, designed by Zimmerman Architectural Studios. It is expected to be completed in time for the 2018 outdoor concert season. “There’s tremendous talent in this neighborhood,” Sr. Lonergan said. “Even our young children have great artistic talent. We can’t wait to see them entertaining us in this beautiful band shell.”
Town Bank has installed a giant billboard across the street from the new branch location at 4732 W. Lisbon Ave., which is located near the intersection where Lisbon, W. North Avenue and N. 48th St. converge. The new branch will feature fullservice banking, including new drive-thru banking machines and an ATM. Before construction of the band shell can begin, about 9,000 tons of soil affected by petroleum-based pollutants and metals must be excavated and trucked to a landfill. After the old soil is removed, the ground will be covered with a protective liner and clean soil will be placed over it in accordance with federal and state regulations to build the 350-capacity band shell.

Northwest Funeral Chapel sponsored its annual Back-to-School Book Bag GiveAway at the Northwest Family Activity and Event Center, 4034 West Good Hope Road on August 12, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In addition to free book bags and school supplies for children grades 1-8, there were also refreshments, games and free health care information, screenings and flu shots were also offered. Interfaith statement on White Nationalist In remembrance of Donald “Don” Sykes protest in Charlottesville, VA The Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee is urging people of all faiths throughout southeastern Wisconsin and beyond to speak out and stand guard against the white supremacist hatred that violently burst from the underbelly of our American culture in Charlottesville, VA, over the weekend. These hate groups are trying the soul of our society, and these are not the times for people of faith to respond with pious platitudes and lukewarm expressions of concern. The world is all too familiar with the epoch, violent catastrophes that await a nation when racial and religious hatred are not vigorously opposed. Jews are still being vilified by contemporary hate groups. African Americans feel the continuing lash of racism, both subtle and brutal. The Sikh community here has felt the bitter sting of a white supremacist’s gunfire. We need no more reminders that none of us is immune from evil.
White Nationalist/supremacists gathered in Charlottesville, VA to protest the removal of a statue of General Robert E. Lee from the grounds of the state capital. When counter-protesters showed up to confront the White Nationalist, the situation escalated into fisticuffs and a car running into counter protesters, killing one. Religious leaders should preach out, speak out, and uphold the dignity of every person. People of good will should live up to the highest ideals of their faiths and philosophies and not merely mouth them behind closed doors. There remains more light than darkness. Many local faiths, denominations, organizations, and institutions work long hours to counter injustice, fear, hate,
Being Frank September is right around the corner. This means that school will begin for the majority of students in Milwaukee. Parents are out shopping for backpacks, paper and clothing. Students will have to begin preparing for the grind of getting up before noon again. Curriculum for each grade has been rehashed and readied to increase student knowledge. It is time for parents to school their children for life. There are wonderful things to be learned between grades 1 and 12. The experiences a person has during their school days will shape their personality and life choices. Sometimes teachers spend more time with children than parents. This is especially true in elementary school where the teacher spends the day with the same students. The school district’s job is to supply a student with the education to be able to become a productive citizen. The parent is the one that should educate children to succeed in life. Many parents drop their children off at the school and rely on the school to teach their child everything. This type of parent expects the school to answer all questions with clarity so the child will not ask them. Schools only focus on mandated

Don was a pioneer in this community, an exceptional man, and a stalwart individual who gave of himself at the highest level. We share our heartfelt condolences with his loving family, circle of friends and former coworkers. His legacy at SDC, and throughout the community, will forever be remembered and the impact he made on our community will shine into the future.
Schooling students for life
objectives and tasks dealing with education. There is no curriculum dealing with how to teach a young man how to interact with the police. There is no curriculum designed to tell a young woman how to avoid the wrong love interest. These lessons have to come from the parent. In today's society everyone has access to tons of information. The internet opened doors to information that may have been better off left in the dark. With this in mind, it would seem that parents would be more ready to instruct their children on how to live and survive successfully. This is not the instance in most cases. Parents have allowed everything but themselves to guide their children in life decisions. Many children are learning about male-female interactions from music. Children are getting their social consciousness about society from television news. This is a recipe for disaster. The morals and survival skills that only parents can teach is the instruction children are lacking. If people want the police to stop killing men in the streets, parents have to start teaching boys about law interactions. The lesson about how to thrive and be successful in dealing with the law has to come

and bigotry. The Interfaith Conference is one of them. Find one. Add your voice. Add your energy. The Board of Commissioners and staff of the Social Development Commission (SDC) are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Donald “Don” Sykes, longtime executive director of SDC. Sykes led the agency for two decades (1968 – 1988) and was the foundation in building Milwaukee County’s largest anti-poverty agency. He worked tirelessly on behalf of low-income people and the community as a whole. He was resolute in his efforts not only at SDC, but also throughout both his professional career and public-spirited service. The magnitude of Don’s intellect, hard work, and many, many contributions was recognized at the national level when he served the Director of the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Community Relations for the Clinton Administration. Recognition at the national level further demonstrates how truly fortunate the Milwaukee community was to have Don care about the betterment of our city and residents. As the leader of Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB), he achieved significant success
from a parent. Children watch the news and see a minister or activist talk about the problem and offer their solution. These solutions haven’t worked and simply don’t. A parent who has lived and not had legal issues will be a better teacher for their child. They have succeeded in the environment the child will likely grow up in. The same goes for teen pregnancy. A mother that was forced to stop going to school in order to work to keep her child fed is the teacher for that child. This mother can instill the fact that I made a mistake but you don’t have to. There is nothing glorious about begging for government assistance. A mother who has been faced with this humiliation will be the best instructor to prevent teen pregnancy. The same goes for that father who had to work and pay support for an unwanted pregnancy. Imagine the impact parents who told their child the cold truth about parenthood could have on

Church growth series: Why some churches struggle to break the 200 attendance mark (Week 3) This month we are looking closer at why some churches struggle to grow. Carey Nieuwhof notes while social media and even traditional media are still preoccupied with mega-churches and multi-site churches; the reality is that most churches in North America are quite small. There’s nothing wrong with being small; but most small churches do have a desire to grow and reach more people for Christ. Nieuwhof notes, however, many churches remain small because they think small. In his article “8 Reasons Why Churches Never Break the 200 Attendance Mark,” he notes why many churches, while they may want to grow, end up remaining small and then offers a few radical solutions. This week, this column will present Solutions 4-8. 4. Volunteers are un-empowered. Once the pastor and leadership have identified the true leaders, and once they are clear on their mission, vision and strategy, the pastor and leadership must then release people to

Celebrating day one for early start schools Milwaukee Public Schools welcomed back its high school, middle school, and select elementary school students Monday morning August 14, 2017, to kick off the new early start calendar. To celebrate the first day of school, Superintendent Darienne Driver and community members visited James Madison Academic Campus. The early start calendar gives students more opportunities for success: students will have more weeks of instruction prior to national ACT and AP testing dates; the first semester will end in December rather than after the holiday break; and students will have the opportunity to participate in the June Term (J-term) to catch up or get ahead. The pilot program had encouraging results with 70 percent of the participat-
ing seniors graduating this summer. Triple negative breast cancer: what black women need to know Anyone can get triple-negative breast cancer; however, African American women are more likely to develop breast cancer at a younger age (under 50) and often have a more aggressive form of the disease called triple-negative breast cancer. This means that the cancer does not express the gene for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, or HER2 that can stimulate breast cancers to grow—and therefore is immune to many of the targeted treatments that can be used to block tumor growth. Triple-negative breast cancer tends to grow and spread more quickly than other types of breast cancer. Black women are three times more likely to develop triple-negative breast cancer than their White counterparts. In fact, research indicates that 20 to 30 percent of breast cancers diagnosed in African Amer-
ican women are triple-negative. Researchers have also found that it is more likely to affect: • Younger people. Triple-negative breast cancer is more likely to occur before age 40 or 50, versus age 60 or older, which is more typical for other breast cancer types. • Hispanic women. Tri-
ple-negative breast cancer most commonly affects African American women, followed by Hispanic women. Asian women and non-Hispanic white women are less likely to develop this type of cancer. A study found that black women were 3 times more likely to develop triple-negative breast cancer than white women.
Healthy breast cells contain receptors for the hormones estrogen and progesterone. They also contain receptors for a protein called HER2, which stimulates normal cell growth. About two out of three women with breast cancer have cells that contain receptors for estrogen and progesterone, and about 20 – 30 percent of breast cancers have too many HER2 receptors. Triple-negative breast cancer treatment options: • Breast cancer that is estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) positive can be treated with hormone therapies. Breast cancer with excess amounts of HER2 can be treated with anti-HER2 drugs such as trastuzumab. • In women with triple-negative breast cancer, the malignant cells do not contain receptors for estro-
gen, progesterone or HER2. Breast cancer that is ER, PR and HER2 negative cannot be treated with hormone therapies or medications that work by blocking HER2, such as trastuzumab. All women can help reduce their risk of breast cancer by avoiding weight gain and obesity (for postmenopausal breast cancer), engaging in regular physical activity, and minimizing alcohol intake. Women should consider the increased risk of breast cancer associated with combined estrogen and progestin hormone therapy use when evaluating treatment options for menopausal symptoms. In addition, recent research indicates that long-term, heavy smoking may also increase breast cancer risk, particularly among women who start smoking before their first pregnancy.

It is used to build and repair body tissue and keep your hair, nails, and skin healthy. It also helps to boost your immune system. Beyond those benefits, research indicates eating lean, high-quality protein can help people with type 2 diabetes lose or maintain weight and manage blood glucose. In a recent study, participants consumed either a high animal protein diet – including lean meat and dairy foods or a high-plant protein diet for six weeks. The composition of both diets was 30 percent protein, 40 percent carbohydrate and 30 percent fat. At the end of the study, A1C percentage decreased in both groups (the A1C test reflects your average blood glucose level over the past three months). Moreover, insulin sensitivity improved

Could a gap year after high school make financial sense?
During a gap year, young adults also often take a more direct role in their day-today finances. They can develop a greater appreciation for earning, and spending, money. In turn, this can give them a framework when taking out student loans and an extra push to apply for scholarships. Finding structure for your gap year. To avoid squandering the year, you can look into formal programs that can help you achieve or define your personal, academic or career goals. According to the American Gap Association (AGA), a nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon, over 80 percent of gap year students say the skills they acquired helped them be successful in their career after school. backed AmeriCorps programs place volunteers throughout the U.S. to help communities in needs. Once you complete a full-time 10- to 11-month commitment, you may be eligible for a scholarship worth up to $5,815 (in fiscal year 2017). Some colleges and universities will also match a portion of the award. Working for a local business could be another great option. You can earn money, see if you truly enjoy the work, network and may be able to line up work during school or for future summer jobs. The industry connections and mentorship you receive can also be valuable for your post-graduation job search. Another resource for finding a program is the USA Gap Year Fairs, which profiles a broad range of gap
year experiences. Privately run programs may not offer compensation, but sometimes you can work in exchange for room and board. The experience can also serve as a foundation for cover letters when you apply for jobs or college admissions essays. Funding your gap year. There are gap year options for students from all socio-economic backgrounds. The AGA maintains a list of financial aid opportunities that can help you fund a gap year. The mix of meritand need-based scholarships could cover the cost of a program or offset the cost of traveling or volunteering. If you have a particular program, ask the organization for recommendations. Also, inquire with your university to see if it recommends or runs any programs. Some schools offer scholar-
ships to admitted students who take a gap year, and a few will give you college credit for completing certain programs. Once you start your college education, you can try to capitalize on your year off. There are many scholarships available to continuing college students and your experience could be a good jumping-off point for an essay. Bottom line: Taking a gap year between high school and college is increasingly popular, although still not as common as it is in some other parts of the world. While jumping right into college and getting a degree is the traditional path towards employment, some parents and students see the benefit of taking a year off to better define one's goals and gain real-world experience before going to college.

In either case, they can save tens of thousands of dollars.

Town Bank opens in the central city: An interview with President and CEO Jay Mack Town Bank, a Wisconsin-chartered community bank, part of the Wintrust Community Bank family, with $2 billion in assets and 20 branch offices concentrated in the southeastern part of the state, will open its second location in Milwaukee on August 21. The address at 4732 W. Lisbon Ave., was chosen, according to Town Bank President and CEO Jay C. Mack, because it was identified as an economically promising, under-served community at “a major crossroad of the central city.” The economic investment in a second branch in Milwaukee includes eight to 10 new jobs in the Uptown neighborhood and is part of a longer-term strategy which may lead the company to open additional branches in other under-served central city neighborhoods, Mack said. The merger increased the number of branches affiliated with Town Bank to include more than 150 locations in and around Chicago, southern Wisconsin and northwest Indiana. The banks are built to be true community banks, Mack said, with the resources of a large company, but the personal touch of a small institution. Town Bank describes its business model as “relationship banking.” Relationship banking includes a whole range of banking services and Town Bank bankers will be available to help counsel small, local business owners on a variety of best business practices. Relationship banking also means that Town Bank clients typically work with the same trusted advisor who knows that customer. “We think of the business banking experience as a true partnership,” said Mack. “It’s our job to get to know the
businesses we serve and understand what they do so we can provide the guidance, resources and tools to help local entrepreneurs succeed.” Mack said another thing that sets Town Bank apart from its competitors is local decision-making. Even though the bank is part of Wintrust, it still acts like a local bank when it comes to servicing of loans. “Bank officers can make local decisions,” he explained. “Businesses need access to capital to grow. Families need mortgages for homes. The services we provide help boost the local economy and everyone benefits from that.” Town Bank will also give back to the community. The bank’s locations are often members of local chambers of commerce, sponsor local events, and provide grants to local not-for-profit organizations. Mack said that is the plan with the new Uptown location as well.
