Let's not give COVID-19 the opportunity to keep mutating: roll up your sleeve, get your vaccine, and claim your $100." It's not clear if the program could be extended after Labor Day. Evers did not say how the incentives would be paid for. Other states that have had similar programs paid for their incentives with federal funds. The vaccine is available for everyone age 12 years and older. It's not clear how many residents might take advantage of the new program. Evers said he was inspired to roll out the incentive program after seeing how successful it was in Michigan. He stopped short Monday of announcing a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for Wisconsin state employees. Also on Monday, the FDA granted full approval of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for anyone age 16 and older. A little more than 6 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have now been administered in Wisconsin. As of Friday, August 20, 2021, 50 percent of Wisconsin residents have received both doses of the vaccine.

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th
August is Black Business Month - Week 4 In an article published in Forbes, it noted supporting Black-owned businesses should be more than just a trend. During the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, the Google search for Black-owned businesses reached a value of 100 (the peak popularity for a term) during May 31 to June 6, 2020 period. Since then, according to the Forbes article, the interest over time for the search term has largely been on a downward trend, with a few spikes in June and July of 2020.1 Support of Blackowned businesses should be more than a “trend” but a movement where people are supporting Black businesses regularly. The author of the Forbes article offered these suggestions to support Black-owned business throughout the year: 1. Add them to your list of go-to places. 2. Tell people about them. 3. Follow and post about them on social media. 4. Write positive and constructive reviews. This week, in celebration of Black Business Month, we will feature a variety of businesses in our community. You are encouraged to support your favorite Blackowned business.

MPS gives some students a chance to work with Wisconsin sports teams through new school program Students at Golda Meir School in Milwaukee are getting the chance to work with professional sports teams in Wisconsin. MKE Fellows is teaming up with Marquette University and Milwaukee Public Schools to bring the Sports Analytics Club Program to the school. SACP is modeled to engage high school students of color and steer them towards careers in fields like engineering and data science. "I'm super excited. It involves science, math, a lot of inside work for sports," Solimar Sanchez, a junior at Golda Meir School, said. Sanchez was selected to work with about 20 other students after school, learning how data science plays

From the other side of the world, girl in Kenya learns computer coding at UWM The pandemic and a year of virtual schooling had an unexpected benefit for a little girl in Kenya who connected with Girls Who Code at UWM. “I use the computer for school, and I wanted to understand more about how they work,” said Elsie Maingi, who is 10 years old and lives in Nairobi. However, computer classes in Kenya were geared to high school students and business people and were usually quite expensive, said her mother, Lilian Wangechi. So in the fall of 2020, they turned to Google and found the free Girls Who Code program at UWM. Because of the time difference, Elsie got up at 2 a.m. for every class during that semester and the spring 2021 semester. Encouraging young women The national Girls Who Code program encourages young women of middle and high school age to get involved with computer sciences, according to Christine Cheng, an associate professor of computer science who launched UWM’s program in 2016. “When we knew we were going to be online in the fall of 2020, it was a blessing in disguise because it allowed many people who were not living near UWM to attend classes,” she said, “but Elsie was the only one from a different country.” Sammie Omranian, a graduate student and teaching assistant who manages UWM’s program, said she was amazed at Elsie’s persistence. “It was so surprising for me. I knew that she was from Kenya, but never thought

By Kiara Schott, AABN WeRISE Community Doula Program Director Black Breastfeeding Week is here August 25-30. We’re celebrating all month long. It’s important for us to acknowledge that Black women breastfeed. It is important for us to talk about this, talk about the racial disparities in breastfeeding

Black women breastfeed. Period.
and why our numbers are lower than other groups of women. There are five main reasons why the founders of Black Breastfeeding Week created the week and those include: (1) the high Black infant mortality rate, (2) high rates of diet-related disease, (3) lack of diversity in the lactation field, (4) unique cultural barriers among Black women and
(5) desert-like conditions in our communities. Despite all these challenges Black Women Breastfeed! There are a lot of Black women that are passionate about breastfeeding, and a lot of others that may be if they were given the chance and were informed. It’s important to remember when you have someone in your life that gives birth, do not ask them
‘are you breastfeeding?” Simply taking the assumption out of how they are feeding their baby can go a long way. “How are you feeding your baby?” works wonders. Offer support, and truly mean it. If you are unable to help, let’s reach out to the passionate experts and professionals that can. Let’s keep celebrating Black Breastfeeding!
