Gee's Wellness Clinic now offers free COVID-19 vaccines Gee's MKE Wellness Clinic is located inside Gee's Clippers at 2200 N. Dr. MLK Jr., Dr. The wellness clinic is sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and supported by 17 Milwaukee community-based organizations and provides health education, referral resources, and even testing and vaccines to keep you and your families safe. No appointment or haircut required, just stop in and ask to speak with a 'Wellness Gee'nuis.' During a recent visit, Rev. Harold Turner, pastor of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, learned about the clinic which builds on the trust and strength of the barbershop among African American men. Clinic staff are supplied by Anthem. Pastor Turner is hoping to persuade any Milwaukee pastors not yet vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus to reconsider and to encourage members of their congregation to receive the vaccine.

“Pastors are like first responders for families in times of joy and tragedy,” Pastor Turner said. “In times of tragedy, pastors often come in contact with a large number of people where social distancing is difficult to practice. If pastors are unwilling to get vaccinated to protect their own health, they should do it to protect their families and those to whom they minister,” he said. Estimates vary for if or when the U.S. will achieve population immunity, but most experts do not believe the U.S. has achieved that threshold. If a larger percentage of the adult population does not receive the vaccine, there is a possibility that the U.S. could face another shutdown this winter. “Pastors want to do their best as first responders and they want to come back home safely to their families,” Pastor Turner said. “If pastors really want to do their best for their family and flock there really is no excuse.”

Honoring Grandparents – It’s Great To be Grand! (Week 2) "Grandchildren are the dots that connect the lines from generation to generation." ~ Lois Wyse National Grandparents Day is celebrated September 12, 2021; however, this entire month has been dedicated to honoring grandparents. This week, let’s begin with AARP’s Executive Summary on how the fundamentals of the grandparenting role has remained the same, with grandchildren upholding respect for their grandparents and grandparents sharing wisdom and guidance: • Grandchildren continue to refer to their grandparents by the traditional names (70 percent use a form of “grandma”; 60 percent use a form of “grandpa”). • Over half of grandparents consider themselves a source of wisdom and provide a moral compass on issues such as education, morals, and values. • Grandparents take care of their grandchildren by babysitting, with one in ten living in the same household with their grandchildren, and 5 percent of those being the primary caregiver. • Grandparents provide financially for their grandchildren, ranging from gifts to supporting their education and day-to-day costs.

Beloved, grandparents who raise their grandkids or serve as their grandchild(ren)’s fulltime caregiver have a few challenges. Grandparents often have legal issues related to obtaining guardianship, enrolling their grandchildren in school, and accessing medical care for their grandchildren. They may also have concerns related to custody battles with other grandparents or their grandchildren’s parents. How can the Body of Christ (the Church) minister to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren? One way is to set up a monthly

The AARP Executive Summary also notes how changes in attitudes, technology, and our world have resulted in definite shifts in how grandparents relate and engage with their grandchildren: • While traditional names such as “grandma” and “grandpa” are still prevalent, one in twenty are being referred to by their first name. • As a whole, grandparents are embracing multiculturalism. A third have grandchildren of a different race or ethnicity and fewer have identical race grandchildren. • Nearly all grandparents say it is important that their different race/ethnicity grandchild knows about the heritage they share, and seven in ten make an effort to help their grandchildren learn about the heritage they do not share. • Today’s grandparents are sex positive and accepting of grandchildren’s different sexualities, with a majority saying they would support an LGBT grandchild. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Morse Middle School is first MPS building closed due to COVID-19 this fall Morse Middle School was closed on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, for 10 days, while teachers and students will continue to meet virtually, due to a high level of COVID-19 cases at the school. Families were notified the afternoon of September 8 about the closure after at least three percent of the school population had tested positive in the last two weeks. A spokesman for Milwaukee Public Schools would not say how many students and staff had tested positive. At least 20 students and staff have reported positive results in the past seven days, according to the district dashboard. About 500 students were enrolled in the

During the closure, staff are being asked to work in the building, in individual rooms, and are expected to reach out to their students about virtual learning. Responding to the rapid spread, MPS administrators have proposed a vaccine mandate for all staff, with some exemptions for religious and medical reasons, as well as incentives for students. The school board considered the proposal on September 9, 2021. School board members and the president of the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association have also called on city officials to reinstate a mask mandate for all buildings open to the public.

First Lady Jill Biden holds education event at Milwaukee school First Lady Jill Biden visited Milwaukee on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, for a visit to Marvin E. Pratt Elementary School. She touched down at Mitchell International Airport shortly before 10:30 a.m. Dr. Biden was greeted by Mayor Tom Barrett and his wife, who is a retired teacher. Dr. Biden visited Marvin E. Pratt Elementary School to highlight the importance of helping keep students safe as they return to in-person learning. She spoke to 10 teachers and parents for about 30 minutes. Participants wore face masks and were socially distanced. "The school year brings a new mix of emotions," Dr. Biden noted. "For parents it's not having to hear 'I'm bored' over and over again." She spoke of the worries COVID-19 brings: "A simple cough can get your heart racing." "As a teacher for more than 30 years in fact, I just started my own semester this last week. And, as a mom. I've seen that the classrooms are just so much larger than places where children learn math and reading," Dr. Biden said. "The American Rescue Plan increases access to broadband and tech devices, creates additional learning opportunities outside of the classroom, and provides more mental health support." Parents and teachers got a chance to share their pandemic learning experiences with the First Lady. Principal Tianna Evans said parents were being "adaptable and flexible" with coming back to in-person.

she said. "He will hear your stories." Dr. Biden did not take questions from the media. Milwaukee Public Schools enacted a district-wide COVID-19 vaccine mandate last week for all employees. One school was already forced to go all-virtual after a Dr. Biden asked several questions. She asked one mom who talked about food assistance what programs she used and how they were helpful. Dr. Biden asked another mom how she was taking care of herself during the pandemic. When one parent said she hoped to get her kids vaccinated, Jill Biden said: "That's what we're hoping for," adding: "Pretty soon we're hoping to get a vaccine for kids under 12." Mary Wall, Senior Policy Adviser, White House COVID-19 Response Team, who was traveling with the First Lady and part of the round table, said: "We are still hoping for later this year, you don't have a totally fun timeline but we're hoping for later this year." Another parent noted "There hasn't been a debate about the masking situation in this district. I couldn't send my kid to school without a mask." "There hasn't," Dr. Biden asked. "That probably just takes that stress off of you as well," praising them for being unified. In her closing remarks she thanked them for their stories: "I'll take them back to the White House with me and when I see my husband and we're having dinner I'll say, 'This is what I heard',"

how the Biden Administration is supporting families through the American Rescue Plan and its Build Back Better agenda. The First Lady visited Waukesha County last September for a small, socially distanced event on the importance of health care.

Milwaukee lynching victim George Marshall Clark receives headstone after 160 years Nearly two centuries after he was brutally lynched, the City of Milwaukee is remembering the life of George Marshall Clark with a monument to ensure his story is not forgotten. "I think this is needed. And it's about time," said artist Tyrone Randale, Jr. Clark was only 22 years old when his life was cut short. "He was a well-thought-of young man, well-liked, and just coming into the prime of his life at the time that he lost his life," said Reggie Jackson, co-owner of Nurturing Diversity Partners.

According to historical experts, George Marshall Clark had lived in Milwaukee with his roommate at the time of his murder.

"Three Girls from Bronzeville: A Uniquely American Memoir of Race, Fate, and Sisterhood" by Dawn Turner

c.2021, Simon & Schuster $26.99 / $35.99 Canada 321 pages Go left or go right? It seems that at every point in life, you need a decision: take a familiar street, or a route you rarely travel? A restaurant you frequent, or something new for dinner? Sometimes, the choices won't matter next week

or in a year, but – as in the new book "Three Girls from Bronzeville" by Dawn Turner – other decisions are more consequential. One of her earliest memories involves her newborn sister. Dawn Turner was no more than a toddler herself then, living in a hotel room with her mother because her father was gone again. Turner remembers the weight of her baby sister, Kim, and knowing that everything had changed. For the rest of their childhoods, the girls were inseparable though, like many big sisters, Turner sometimes resented Kim's tagging along. That became more pronounced when Turner found her first best friend, who lived in the apartment directly above theirs in a new housing project in Chicago's Bronzeville. Turner wanted Debra to herself, but she had to share

the friendship with Kim and that was fine. Summer days and after-school was often better with three. The girls made their own fun, hiding from maintenance men in the building, hanging out on fire escapes, and reading in a secret spot on an accessible rooftop. In the shadows of deteriorating apartment complexes and abandoned buildings, their childhoods were almost idyllic. And things changed again. As high school loomed, Turner and Debra slowly started to drift apart, a slide that was defined by Debra's family's move to Indianapolis. Turner began to plan for college, while Kim struggled in school. Time passed and as the neighborhood that nurtured three little girls fell into a state of disrepair, so did the girls' bond and suddenly, they "were on different trajectories." One went south, one went to college, boys came around, and so

to hand you and molding it to fit. On that, author Dawn Turner is irresistibly nostalgic and her memories will leave you with a sense of carefree childhood in the city – but she's also realistic, describing her surroundings with decreasing enthusiasm that speaks volumes. Turner points no fingers here but you'll see likely culprits to blame along the way. Substance abuse plays a large part in this tale. THE MARY L. NOHL FELLOWSHIPS FOR INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS On Friday, September 10, 2021, 5 Points Art Gallery and Studios welcomed the public to attend the opening reception to "Signs O’ The Times," an ambitious group exhibition tackling the ambiguous, and for some, politically and socially polarizing, topic of gentrification. “Gentrification,” a result of urban renewal, is a contemporary term for the displacement of racially and economically marginalized populations from their naturalized communities. Residents, seldom included or given timely access to urban and economic development plans, are usually late in identifying the physical and cultural evacuation scheduled for their neighborhoods. Signs O’ The Times clarifies the visible and unveils the inconspicuous signs, dialogues, and other harbingers of encroaching gentrification through bold art compositions.
