Nefertari African Dance Company celebrates 50th Anniversary On Sunday, September 15 and 16, 2018, the Nefertari African Dance Company (NADC) hosted its 50th Year Anniversary at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, 2620 W. Center St. The weekend events included multi-cultural dance workshops, and a gala event. The Nefertari Dance Company was founded in 1968 at the North Division High School by teacher and coach the late Sarah Lee Grant. It provided for young people for young people of African descent an avenue of expression and pride in the culture of their ancestors. In 1997 NADC left North Division High School to become a community wide program, under the direction of Marilynn Douglas, a North Division Alumna. The group has received national acclaim and has performed at major events all over the country.

Police probing "suspicious death" of student pledging Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity University of California Riverside student "suddenly collapsed" during fraternity hiking trip

The family of a 20-yearold student who was pledging a fraternity at the University of California, Riverside, wants to know whether hazing led to his death, CBS Los Angeles reports. As of Monday, September 17, 2018, police were awaiting results of the autopsy and were calling it a "suspicious death" investigation. Tyler Hilliard died suddenly over the weekend. His mother, Myeasha Kimble, said a mom should never have to "bury a child like that." "He's only 20," she said. "He hasn't even begun to live his life. He had a bright future ahead of him."

Tyler was pledging the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha. Members of the group told the family that they were beginning a hike on Mt. Rubidoux Saturday night when he collapsed and had to be taken to Riverside Community

Hospital. Tyler's aunt, Robyn Fountain, said it was "very clear" they were being hazed. She said in recent weeks there were disturbing text messages on Tyler's phone from senior members of the

fraternity. "Directing them to, like, make a paddle so we can beat you guys with it when you get here," she said. She said other messages indicated pledges had also been beaten with cactuses. According to Alpha Phi Alpha's national website, the fraternity does not allow hazing of any kind. "Working with the University, the fraternity has launched an investigation into the situation and has placed the chapter on an immediate cease and desist status, suspending all activities," their executive director said. Tyler's family said they want to get to the bottom of what happened so they can

make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. "I want answers. I want an apology, I want to know what happened. I want people to be truthful about what happened. I want justice for my son, because he did not deserve this," said Kimble. UC Riverside said in a statement it is working with the Riverside Police to determine the circumstance of Tyler's death. In the meantime, it is making counselors available to those who knew him. Kimble said a toxicology report didn't show anything abnormal so she is awaiting results of the autopsy.

Boston Store plans to open new Milwaukee-area stores by Christmas Not a joke, nor a hoax. The Indiana company that purchased the rights to Boston Store and other former Bon-Ton brands plans to open three brick and mortar locations in the Milwaukee area before the start of the holiday shopping season. Fred Hulls, a representative from Boston Store’s public relations department, made the announcement Monday, September 17, 2018, on WISN 12 NEWS' midday newscast. "It is such a loved brand by its customers, that we're looking at ahead of the hol-

idays two stores in the Milwaukee metro area," Hulls said. A third store is planned for Brookfield, he added.

Being Frank It is easy for someone to say that African American youth are out of control in 2018. That statement is true in many instances in the USA. How did this situation come to be, though? How did African Americans lose control of their children? These questions are the ones that have to be answered in order to understand why African American youth are so hell-bent on destroying themselves. It wasn’t long ago that you would be in the grocery store and see African American children acting like they had sense. It would be the Caucasian child that acted out in the store because they didn’t get to choose the cereal. That day is long gone. Now you often see the reverse, the African American child cutting up and the Caucasian child watching. Many African American parents were lulled into a lie that Caucasians knew better than

them on how to raise their children. You had people like Benjamin Spock pushing theories on society about raising children. These theories may have worked for other races but they have failed in the African American community. African American youth have more material things than at any other point in US history. Even in poor areas you see children sporting Jordan shoes and Play Station games in homes. This increase of material goods

has not led to an increase in intelligence or, more importantly, common sense. The African American parent has fallen into a cheaper version of the problem Caucasians always had. Whites have this foolish concept that things can replace time and positive interactions between parent and child. Since African American parents have aped after their white counterparts they have the same child issues at a cheaper price. It is easy to blame younger parents for the lack of Afri-

can American youth sensibility. Once again this falls back on a parent. If the grand parent was foolishly deceived by society, what chance does their child have? This is not a money issue either. Many of the worst children come from the African American middle to upper class home. Why? The reason is the parents have adopted a Caucasian mindset to raise the child and are getting the same results their white peers do. The difference is when African Americans do something, it gets the spotlight treatment. African American parents have created the African American youth problem in the USA today. It doesn’t matter if you are a young parent or old parent; what does matter is the time and positive impressions you make on a child. The African American parent of today has to take back control of raising their children. Af-

rican Americans do not have the luxury of buying stuff and letting their children run amok. African Americans need to start instilling a sense of confidence and pride in their children early so they will know who and where they are. African American people, if you truly believe that the youth are the future then something has got to change. If not, just look to the past and you will see where you are going. very lowest standards of today call the necessities of life. I see millions of families trying to live on incomes so meager that the pall of family disaster hangs over them day by day. I see millions whose daily lives in city and on farm continue under conditions labeled indecent by a so-called polite society half a century ago. I see millions denied education, recreation, and the opportunity to better their lot and the lot of their children. … It is not in despair that I paint you that picture. I paint it for you in hope — because the Nation, seeing and understanding the injustice in it, proposes to paint it out. We are determined to make every American citizen the subject of his country’s interest and concern; and we will never regard any faithful

law-abiding group within our borders as superfluous.” We are facing another test of our moral progress today – and we are failing. U.S. Census Bureau figures for 2017 released this week show nearly 1 in 5 children in America still lives in poverty making them the poorest age group in our country. Almost one-third of the 39.7 million poor people in the United States are children. While the data show a slight reduction in child poverty in 2017 compared to 2016, the number of poor children – 12.8 million, 17.5 percent of all children – remains indecently high. And though unemployment numbers continue to fall, these gains have not kept families and children out of poverty. More than 70 percent of poor children come from working families who often face low and stagnant wages.

The fact that nearly 1 in 5 children in America lives in poverty is morally and practically unacceptable and economically costly. That our youngest children are the poorest group of children during their years of greatest brain development is a shameful indictment of our values and our common sense given our very wealthy nation’s failure to invest in our vulnerable young. More than 1 in 5 children under six are poor in 20 states and the District of Columbia. More than two-thirds of poor children are children of color who will soon be a majority of our child population responsible for supporting our increasingly aging population into the future. Only five states have Black child poverty rates under 20 percent. How shockingly wrong-headed, immoral and costly it is that as they learn 12.8 million children are struggling to grow up in poverty, the Trump Administration and Republican controlled Congress propose to throw money at non-needy millionaires and billionaires over babies. In 2017 the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act gave massive tax cuts to billionaires, millionaires and powerful corporations at the expense (Continued pg. 15)

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Fall is coming! #ANewSeason: Week4 - eat healthy! (cont’d) “Somewhere along the way, I realized that the new year doesn’t begin for me in January. The new and fresh has always come for me in the Fall. Ironically, as leaves are falling like rain, crunching beneath my feet with finality, I am vibrating with the excitement of birth and new beginnings…My year begins in Autumn.” -Betsy Canãs It has been this writer’s goal to outline ways to rev up your exercise routine as well as jumpstart a healthy eating regime as we begin #ANewSeason! Really, it doesn’t matter how old you are or what season it is, exercise and eating healthy are always in season. This series continues with Tips 3-8 from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) on healthy eating and healthy snacking. HHS tip #3: Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1 percent) milk. Both have the same amount of calcium and

other essential nutrients as whole milk, but fewer calories and less saturated fat. HHS tip #4: Choose a variety of lean protein foods. Meat, poultry, seafood, dry beans or peas, eggs, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the protein foods group. Select leaner cuts of ground beef (where the label says 90 percent lean or higher), turkey breast, or chicken breast. HHS Tip #5: Compare sodium in foods. Use the Nutrition Facts label to choose lower sodium versions of foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals. Select canned foods labeled “low sodium,” “reduced sodium,” or “no salt added.” HHS Tip #6: Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Cut calories by drinking water or unsweetened beverages. Soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks are a major source of added sugar and calories in American diets. Try adding a slice of lemon, lime, or watermelon

or a splash of 100 percent juice to your glass of water if you want some flavor. HHS Tip #7: Eat some seafood. Seafood includes fish (such as salmon, tuna, and trout) and shellfish (such as crab, mussels, and oysters). Seafood has protein, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids (heart-healthy fat). Adults should try to eat at least eight ounces a week of a variety of seafood. Children can eat smaller amounts of seafood, too. Hhs tip #8: Cut back on solid fats: eat fewer foods that contain solid fats. The major sources for Americans

are cakes, cookies, and other desserts (often made with butter, margarine, or shortening); pizza; processed and fatty meats (e.g. sausages, hot dogs, bacon, ribs); and ice cream. Healthy snacking • For a handy snack, keep cut-up fruits and vegetables like carrots, peppers, or orange slices in the refrigerator. • Teach children the difference between everyday snacks, such as fruits and veggies, and occasional snacks, such as cookies or other sweets. • Make water a staple of snack time. Try adding a slice of lemon, lime, or a splash of 100 percent juice to your water for a little flavor. • Swap out your cookie jar for a basket filled with fresh fruit. Beloved, the HHS notes that small changes can make a BIG difference to your health. The HHS suggests try incorporating at least six of the eight goals into your

diet. Commit to incorporating one new healthy eating goal each week over the next six weeks. Have you been overlooking and/or neglecting self-care? Why not jump-start this new season taking more time to take care of self ? In next week’s article, you will be enlightened by an article by my daughter who will serve as the guest columnist writing on the topic of self-care. Next week: self-care The writer does not assume responsibility in any way for readers’ efforts to apply or utilize information or recommendations made in this article, as they may not be necessarily appropriate for every situation to which they may refer. Bulletin Board Class act school supply drive

The sixth annual “Class Act School Supply Drive” raised more than $66,000 to provide students in Milwaukee County with classroom supplies before they start the school year. From August 21 – 22, 2018, WISN 12 hosted a phone bank and dedicated significant airtime reaching out to its viewers with a critical call to help kids in need. In addition to monetary donations, gracious viewers from across Southeastern Wisconsin came together to “Stuff The Bus,” filling an entire full-sized school bus with backpacks, notebooks and other necessities. WISN 12, The Salvation Army and radio station 96.5 WKLH banded together with a coordinated campaign involving an on-air live phone bank, online fundraising and in-person donations. With the money and supplies raised this year, the “Class Act School Supply Drive” will provide more

than 4,400 backpacks full of supplies to be handed out to four MPS schools including Congress School, Forest Home Avenue School, Manitoba School and Fifty-Third Street School. Additional supplies benefit Salvation Army programs including The Emergency Lodge. Between the efforts of WISN 12 staff, Salvation Army volunteers, and radio station 96.5 WKLH, donations exceeded this year’s goal of $50,000. “In the six years of the ‘Class Act School Supply Drive’ we have raised more than $350,000 for school supplies," said Ben Lorber, director of programming Event Photo and public affairs for WISN 12. “The program has provided more than 23,000 Salvation Army of Greater Milwaukee Assistant Divisional Director of Develbackpacks full of supplies opment Faithe Colas presents the donated backpacks and school supplies to for area students, an amazing the students. testament to the continued generosity of the people in Southeastern Wisconsin.”

Pictured are the participants and judges for the Vincent High School event Eggshells were cracking as Vincent High School culinary arts students prepared their masterpiece deviled eggs for a panel of local celebrity judges this week. The stakes were high, with the winning egg moving on to be a featured appetizer in Vincent’s first-ever farm-to-table fundraiser, “Growing to Our Full Potential” on September 20, 2018. After much deliberation, the judges’ results for the best deviled egg were sealed in an envelope and will be revealed at the fundraiser. Celebrity judges weren’t yolking around as they sniffed, sampled, analyzed, and tasted six different deviled egg entries. Judges agreed it was a tough call and that all entries were egg-cellent, but they weren’t chicken to declare a winner. The judging panel included Tyler Maas, Milwaukee Record; Kyle

Cherek, Wisconsin Foodie host; Daryl Burns, Principal at Vincent High School; Bobby Tanzilo, OnMilwaukee.com; Kevin Sloan, Executive Chef at Pabst Theater Group; and Tarik Moody, 88Nine Radio Milwaukee DJ and producer/host of the food and culture podcast “This Bites.”

Eight tips to make the most out of your freshman year in college By: Tia Muhammad Fall is here and freshman year is going to be lit! That is, if you prepare well… Find out what you can do to make the most out of your firstyear college experience: 1. Plan, plan, plan! When it comes to your future, there is much value in planning properly. For college, in particular, the way you layout your schedule, time, and extra-circular activities will be the most important thing you’ll do during your 4-year stint. Use your freshman year to test out what plan works best for you because time management will either make or break your entire college experience. 2. Schedule a meeting with your advisor This is very important to do when you first step foot on campus. Find out who your advisor is and schedule a time to meet with them. In most cases, freshmen are required to meet with their advisor to schedule their classes anyway. However, if you’ve been given the task of choosing

and scheduling your classes on your own, take that extra step to still meet with your advisor to ensure that you are taking the correct and best classes for your major. 3. Take as many credits as you can This is often just an option for freshmen when they first arrive. Advisors know that it will be an initial adjustment for the newbies, so they intentionally advise you to take fewer classes with about 12 credits being the minimum to still be considered fulltime. What many freshmen don’t know is the max you can actually take is 18-20 credits if they don’t conflict with your required classes. So, take up those extra credits and take a class you see of interest that may or not be required for your major, even if it’s just to rack up your G.P.A.! 4. Use your food credits wisely Yes, it may seem like its “free” money that you can use endlessly but be cautious before you use them all up! Food credits can be used for the cafeteria, commons (food court) area, and campus convenience stores–not

a thought to others. Please research your major, people! Fully do an investigation of what job the degree can get you, what fields you can cross over into, and what minors may pair well with that particular major.

all of these places cost the same. The cafeteria is of course the everyday low-cost choice, and the commons is more of the pricey weekend option. Choose wisely! 5. Discover different campus organizations I cannot stress this enough! Discover the numerous options of campus organizations. The people who you’ll meet in these organizations are sure to be friends for life. Whether it’s a modeling troupe or a sorority, make sure to find your place of comfort; it may even help you find your own personal

tribe. 6. Apply for on-campus/ work-study jobs early! I wish I knew this in advance! The earlier you apply, the more likely you’ll get a callback. On-campus/workstudy jobs may not pay much, but they are much more convenient and fun than working off-campus. You’ll have a chance to work with friends and even get professional experience added on to your resume! 7. Research your major’s projected career path What may seem like common sense, may not even be

Always keep a plan A and B in mind when choosing a major. More than likely what you go for in school is not what you’ll actually end up doing. Make sure to save room for alternative careers and paths that you may take on your personal journey up the career ladder. 8. Work hard, play hard Parties are going to happen, so HAVE FUN! But just make sure to do it safely and responsibly. My first year, a professor literally said, “Look around, take in everyone you see here today because more than likely you won’t see them here next year.” And just like that, I saw people drop out like flies, one by one. Get a head start and make the necessaries preparations to make sure to be one of the ones to make it to the end.

Three healthy ways to get the most out of your trips Whether you are planning a local staycation, cross-country family getaway, or even an international excursion, for

most Americans the summer and holiday months are full of travel. In fact more than half of Americans report

that they intend to vacation in July, followed in quantity by August, June and September.

With so many of us on the go, it is easy to be thrown off of a regular schedule and routine when it comes to your health and self-care. From overindulging in cheat meals and poolside cookouts to skipping weeks in the gym, the pitfalls are everywhere. However, creating a few easy and healthy habits can help keep you on track while on the move. Food fueled fun Creating healthy eating habits before you embark on your vacation can be key to maintaining an effective self-care regimen while traveling. Like any habit, healthy eating habits only take about 21 days to develop, if you are dedicated. Planning healthy meals, even while traveling, is key to sustaining progress made. Decisions, like stopping at grocery stores and fresh markets instead of fast food restaurants on road trips, or going to the vendor that sells salads in the airport versus the burger stand, can make or break your momentum.

In addition to making healthy meal choices, snacking is equally important. Eating small and frequent amounts of healthy foods such as nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables can help boost your energy and metabolism ensuring that you get the most out of your trip while maximizing your natural fat burning ability. Let your food power you through your trips, no one wants to be stuck with the “itis” and tired on vacation. Quality over quantity sleep One of the more overlooked aspects of general health is sleep and its importance beyond feeling well rested. When you sleep your body is actually busy at work repairing and healing damaged tissue resulting in lower levels of inflammation, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as type 2 diabetes due to insulin regulation, among other things. While many of us go on vacation with rest in mind, (Continued on pg. 15)

iPhone XS vs. XR vs. XS Max: iPhone buying guide for 2018 We help you break down which iPhone phone to get.

So you'd like to buy either an iPhone XS, XS Max or iPhone XR and you're not sure which one to get. Fair! This year's iPhone line is arguably the most confusing ever, because the three new models are so closely matched. The 5.8-inch iPhone XS and 6.5inch iPhone XS Max have almost identical hardware (the Max has a larger battery), but the 6.1-inch iPhone XR is just different enough to throw a monkey wrench into your buying plans. The iPhone XR has a single rear camera instead of two (no 2x optical zoom here), a comparatively lower resolution LCD screen instead of OLED, and it lacks the 512GB storage option of the XS models. But before you cross it off the list, note its many comparative advantages: Its 6.1-inch screen is bigger than that of the standard iPhone XS (and last year's iPhone X), and Apple says it has the longest lasting battery life of the three. It's got the same speedy processor, and that single rear camera has a new software version of portrait mode, that fancy SLR-style camera effect that blurs the

The iPhone XS in gold is sleek and shiny backgrounds of headshots. The XR also comes in some fun, exclusive color choices. Best of all, the iPhone XR starts at $250 less than the iPhone XS, making it the most affordable new iPhone of 2018. But here's the rub: While the XS models will hit store shelves on Friday, Sept. 21, the iPhone XR won't arrive until Oct. 26. That's why we strongly advise iPhone shoppers to wait until reviews of that model are out-as you want to make sure it's as great a value in real world tests as it sounds like it is on paper. That said, we know many of you just can't wait, so we've answered some of the "which should I buy" questions here.

It’s time to recognize those who have made positive impacts in our lives and community.

If you want... The absolute biggest screen: iPhone XS Max • 2x optical zoom and no-compromise camera: iPhone XS or XS Max • Most affordable new iPhone: XR • Touch ID home button: iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 phones are still around, with price cuts If you feel tempted to save money on the now-discounted iPhone 8 Plus and it's not because you love the home button, resist! Spend $50 more for iPhone XR, at the very least. You'll get a much faster processor, better photography, longer battery life and fast Face ID. If you have a really old iPhone and want the best •

budget iPhone option A factory refurbished iPhone 7 will save you hundreds. Its software is just as secure and up-to-date as the iPhone XS, and this 2016 flagship is still an above-average phone. (Pro tip: Spend up for the 128GB version. You'll thank us later.) You could also get an iPhone SE, which is downright dainty compared to the iPhone XS and XS Max. Keep in mind that you'll have to buy it through carriers and other retailers. Apple has pulled it -- and the iPhone X -- from the Apple store. It's also got a comparatively restrained price, selling for $350. If you're not sold on the iPhone and want alternatives The best Android phones right now include the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and Galaxy Note 9. There's also the terrifically-priced OnePlus 6. If you live outside the US, Huawei's P20 and P20 Pro are excellent phones on par with Samsung's finest. For the budget-minded, the Motorola G6 and Moto E5 families deliver outstanding value for price. And if

you want a small phone, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is really the only diminutive way you can go. Still Android-curious? You're in luck We have no fewer than four major global phone launches in October alone. These are all premium handsets with the latest and greatest specs, likely in the camera department. The Pixel 3 especially has the opportunity to make some striking gains over last year's impressive Pixel 2. It's worth waiting to see if Google's able to repeat its photo magic, especially compared to Apple's iPhone XS camera gains. • LG V40 ThinQ: Oct. 3 • Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 • XL (expected): Oct. 9 • OnePlus 6T: October • Huawei Mate 20: Oct. 16

The iPhone XR brings a welcome splash of color to iPhone's lineup.

Test of progress (Continued from pg. 3) of the majority of taxpayers and children at a cost of $1.9 trillion over the next 11 years. To fill this huge deficit hole, the Trump Administration and Republican leaders in Congress have threatened cuts to critical investments in child health, nutrition, housing and education. This very week, House Republicans introduced their Tax Plan 2.0 that would again reward the wealthy and continue to increase already indefensible inequality. If enacted it would permanently extend the 2017 tax law’s individual provisions slated to expire after 2025 that benefit the top one percent of households twice as much as those in the bottom 60 percent. Initial estimates indicate Tax Plan 2.0 would add around $3 trillion more to the originally projected $1.9 trillion deficit in the first 10 years after the individual provisions become permanent. And with significantly higher projected deficits the threat remains that the Trump White House will continue to propose debilitating cuts to starve survival programs poor children and their families desperately need to buy groceries, see the doctor and find a safe affordable place to live in order to pay for huge tax breaks for wealthy corporations and individuals. Has our nation completely lost all sense of decency and

justice? Babies’ survival needs should trump billionaires’ and millionaires’ greed. Our children’s present and future lives are too valuable to let these profoundly unjust practices continue. This new Tax Plan 2.0 and any additional cuts to key survival programs must be rejected. And every single person in America needs to speak out and mount a campaign to end child poverty now. How will we test our progress today? Will our President continue to ignore the 12.8 million poor children and their families? How many Congressional leaders will stand up for those who have too little – or will they join the frenzied Republican leadership attempts to give more permanent tax breaks to those who have too much? The recent Census Bureau report shows how key investments can help end child and family poverty. We must provide jobs and decent wages and support investments in child and family basic needs. Supplemental Poverty Measure data which expand on the Official Poverty Measure by including the impact of some government and other programs on family resources show that

in 2017 millions of children were lifted above the poverty line by the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other refundable credits (4.5 million), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (1.5 million), the National School Lunch Program (722,000), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) (156,000), housing subsidies (897,000), the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program (472,000), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and general assistance (296,000). We can and must provide enough for our young who have too little instead of padding the pockets of millionaires and billionaires who have far more than their fair share of public welfare. No child in our nation should live in poverty. Shielding children from the lifelong consequences of poverty will improve child lives now and reduce future child poverty. We have all the resources and know how to end child poverty and cannot wait. Our children’s and nation’s future depend on acting right now. Marian Wright Edelman is President of the Children’s Defense Fund whose Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. often times we end up actually sleeping less on vacation than we do in our regular lives. It is true that you do not want to sleep through your experience in a new exciting place; however finding time to get quality sleep is vital, with an emphasis on quality. Getting a few hours of good quality sleep can be more beneficial than long hours in the bed with poor rest. Whether you are getting your extra zZz’s in while in transit from one place to the next, or simply sleeping in a few extra minutes, your vacation and overall health will benefit from a rejuvenating quality sleep. Exploration exercise Much like dietary habits, routines that include regular exercise and physical activity take time (about 21 days) to develop but have bene-

Establishing a regular schedule that allows you to workout at the same time every day creates regularity that your body will eventually crave, even while on vacation and away from home. Once the habit is formed, maintaining consistency while on the go is vital and may be a challenge. However, this may be the perfect chance to break away from the monotony of your everyday workout routine and incorporate exercises that you can do with little to no equipment virtually anywhere, like a hotel room. A fun way to incorporate exercise into your trips may be to go for a walk or run at your regular workout time or morning to explore your new surroundings. So on your next trip start your days with a run on the beach, hike on a nearby trail or jog through the local town and see what the city has to offer beyond the window.

Viola Davis might have gotten an Oscar nomination for 2012's The Help, but she says she regrets her role in the film. During a new interview with the New York Times, she admitted that she believes the film did not do justice to the stories of its black characters. "Have I ever done roles that I've regretted? I have, and The Help is on that list," Viola Davis told the New York Times on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 during an interview for her forthcoming movie Widows. She said that as a role model for women of color, she feels extra pressure to guide others. "Being that role model and picking up that baton when you're struggling in your own life has been difficult," she said. She discussed the criticism that The Help glorified white women for easing racial tensions instead of focusing praise on the black characters, like Davis' character, Aibileen, who is a maid. Davis agreed that the maid characters in the film should have received more recogni-
