On Saturday, September 16, 2017 the Dominican Center, 2470 W. Locust Street, hosted an annual brunch to thank this year's participants in the "Amani Youth In Action" program. Amani neighborhood youth from 8-18 years of age, helped clean the neighborhood, one block at a time, from 20th to 30th Streets and North Ave to Keefe Ave, every Saturday morning for 7 weeks during the summer; as well as participated in trips and activities throughout the year.

Milwaukee Brewers recognized local WWII veteran

On Saturday, September 16, 2017, The Milwaukee Brewers recognized World War II veteran Vernon C. Townsend; who enlisted in the United States Army in July 1943. While in service, he trained and served as a medical orderly until he was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class in February 1946. During his tenure in the military, he administered first aid to the sick, injured and wounded. He also assisted the medical officers and technicians in performing various duties. After leaving the service, PFC Vernon C. Townsend opened his own truck and repair shop and has owned the business for more than 50 years. Minorities and women win big, breaking down barriers at the Emmys The 69th Emmy Awards made history on Sunday, September 17, 2017, by shattering glass ceilings and breaking down long-enduring barriers.

Lena Waithe, a LGBTQ identified African American woman, nabbed the win for Best Writing for a Comedy Series, along with comedian Aziz Ansari, for their Netflix series Master of None–becoming the first black woman to receive the statue in that category. In an empowering and compelling acceptance speech that went viral, she said: “I see each and every one of you. The things that make us different, those are our superpowers. Every day when you walk out the door and put on your imaginary cape and go out there and conquer the world, because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it,” she continued, “And for everybody out there that showed so much love for this episode, thank you for embracing a little Indian boy

win an Emmy for directing a comedy series.

Riz Ahmed joins the list of groundbreaking winners as the first South Asian man to win an Emmy acting award for his role in HBO’s The Night Of. And Sterling Brown, of This Is Us captured the win for Best Actor in a Drama Series–the first time in 18 years that a black actor took the statue home in the category.

“If this show has shown a light on some of the prejudice in our society, Islamophobia, some of the injustice in our justice system, then maybe that’s something,” said Ahmed while accepting his award.

Women also made historic strides Sunday night: Julia Louis-Dreyfus broke the award show’s record with her sixth consecutive win in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Selina Meyer in HBO’s The Veep. The actress has won eight Emmys in total.

Reed Morano, director of The Handmaid’s Tale, is the first woman to win the trophy for directing a drama series in 22 years.

At the end of the evening, Big Little Lies winners Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman used the stage to press other Hollywood heavyweights to create more roles for women during their acceptance speech. “Bring women to the front of their own stories and make them the hero of their own stories,” Witherspoon urged.

“This is a friendship that created opportunities out a frustration because we weren’t getting offered great roles,” Kidman said referring to longtime pal Witherspoon.

“So now, more great roles for women, please.”

Minority wins were celebrated across social media, especially in light of last year’s Oscars, where only white actors and actresses were nominated in the top four categories.

Educational myths and the future

The late Whitney Houston once sang, “I believe that children are our future…”

This was a very popular song at the time. Many people in the USA and around the world believe that children are the future. The future leaders, mover and shakers of the planet are the children. If one were to take a serious look at the children you would have to ask, “What role does the US education system play in the molding of these children as students?”

The child of 2017 is exposed to a level of technology that past children only dreamed of. With this in mind it could be assumed that the child of 2017 is more intelligent than previous children. That assumption would be highly debated by anyone who works in education. The myths about race and student intelligence are shaping the student of 2017’s educational experience.

Many people believe the myth that Caucasian children are smarter than other ethnic groups. This myth is enforced because every other ethnic group strives to be like Caucasians. Sadly, I don’t think Caucasians believe the lie, they just go along with the myth. Why stop people from mimicking your every move and subconsciously worshiping you? In reality, Caucasian children struggle with reading, math, science just like any other child does.

True, there are more aca-

demic successes in the Caucasian community, but they also have a larger population in the USA. The myth of the smart Caucasian has helped keep the status quo of the world in effect.

Another myth is that any child from the Middle or Far East is a budding genius.

The one thing that these students have over many others is their work habit. If any child studied as hard as some of the Eastern children do they would get similar, if not the same, results.

The Eastern genius myth has shaped these children in a way that makes these students attempt to live up to the assumption. This is one case where the adoption of a myth is actually helping out a culture. These students take the knowledge learned in the USA and put it to work in their home country.

One of the saddest myths is the one of the ignorant African American student.

The paradox is that even if African American students succeed in the US education curriculum, they lose.

Honoring grandparents – it’s great to be grand! (Week 4) “To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root.”

- Chinese Proverb Americans are living longer, according to new life expectancy statistics. As life expectancy continues to increase for Americans, more and more Americans are living long enough to become grandparents.

Why is this issue important? As church memberships across the country age, this certainly gives rise to the need for ministries that specifically minister to our aging population. If you haven’t done so already, consider establishing a Senior Adult Ministry in your church that will minister particularly to this age group.

While these members have aged, they still have power and ability. They are still capable of serving others and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Any Senior Adult Ministry should empower seniors to continue to serve God whom they love so very much. Above all, love, honor and respect them for their faithful years of service and ministry to the church.

Another such ministry is a Nursing Home Visitation Ministry. Sometimes the loneliest people are those who are residents of nursing homes. Some universities and colleges that have initiated a nursing home visitation ministry send students to spend time encouraging and sharing the Gospel with the elderly in one-on-one and group settings. As church members continue to age and as people live longer, there is certainly a need for a Nursing Home Visitation Ministry in the local church. As local mission groups regularly visit nursing homes, convalescent centers or the home of their own

congregation’s sick and shutin, it eases the loneliness of an aged individual and puts Christian love in action.

Also, when planning a mission outing to a nursing home facility, you must first familiarize yourself with and observe all the privacy rules of the institutions in which you minister.

Columbia St. Mary's Foundation helps bring “Miles of Smiles” On Tuesday, September 12, 2017, Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation unveiled the new Ascension Seton Mobile Dental Clinic at River Trail Elementary School.

An extension of Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Smart Smiles school-based oral health program, the Mobile Clinic will provide urgent dental care to children in need across southeastern Wisconsin. Many of these students are living in poverty and do not have access to dental care in their neighborhood – leaving them at high risk for tooth decay, infection, and dental pain that would otherwise keep them out of school. Since 2001, Smart Smiles has provid-

ed children with screenings, teeth cleaning, and application of fluoride and sealants, and oral health education.

Study suggests some African Americans with diabetes may never get diagnosed One of the tests used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and monitor blood sugar control is influenced by 60 genetic variants, an international team of scientist has discovered. One genetic variant in particular, found only in African Americans, significantly reduces the accuracy of the HbA1c blood test used to diagnose and monitor the condition. This means around 650,000 African Americans in the U.S. could have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes if tested with the HbA1c test alone.

The results, published in PLOS Medicine suggest screening for the particular genetic variant alongside the diagnostic test, or using other diagnostic tests in populations with African ancestry

in order to improve diagnoses of type 2 diabetes.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, there are more than 100 million U.S. adults living with diabetes or pre-diabetes. There are 30.3 million Americans who have diabetes and another 84.1 million have pre-diabetes, a condition that if not treated often leads to type 2 diabetes within five years.

According to the US Department Office of Minority Health, the prevalence rate of diabetes in African Americans is 13.4

One genetic variant in particular, in the G6PD gene, was found to significantly impact the results of the HbA1c test. The G6PD genetic variant is almost unique to people of African ancestry; around 11 per cent of African Americans carry at least one copy of this variant.

What this means The issue with the G6PD genetic variant is it artificially lowers the value of blood sugar in the HbA1c test, and can lead to under-diagnosis of people with type 2 diabetes. Otherwise the HbA1c test remains a suitable test for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes for the majority of people.

The HbA1c test measures the amount of glucose, or sugar that is carried by the red blood cells in the body, for the previous two to three months. The G6PD genetic variant shortens the threemonth lifecycle of red blood cells. So in African Americans who have this variant, their red blood cells don’t live long enough to bind to the glucose in the blood.

Therefore these people will have a lower level of HbA1c, which won’t show as a positive result for type 2 diabetes.

Medicine is not a onesize- fits-all; and studies like this are one step closer to precision medicine, which takes people’s genetics into account, and improve diagnosis and monitoring for diseases such as diabetes. In the meantime, an option would be to genetically screen African Americans for the G6PD variant alongside the HbA1c test in order to accurately diagnose type 2 diabetes, or use other diagnostic tests such as fasting glucose measurements.

AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES

Remembering the 54th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist church bombing Say their names: Addie Mae Collins, 14 Denise McNair, 11 Carole Robertson, 14 Cynthia Wesley, 14 On September 15, 1963, a bomb exploded during Sunday morning services in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, killing four young girls.

With its large African American congregation, the 16th Street Baptist Church served as a meeting place for civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., who once called Birmingham a “symbol of hardcore resistance to integration.” Alabama’s then-governor, George Wallace, made preserving racial segregation one of the central goals of his administration, and Birmingham had one of the most violent and lawless chapters of the Ku Klux Klan.

The church bombing was the third in Birmingham in 11 days after a federal order came down to integrate Alabama’s school system.

Fifteen sticks of dynamite were planted in the church basement, underneath what turned out to be the girls’ restroom. The bomb detonated at 10:19 a.m., killing Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Addie Mae Collins–all 14 years old–and 11-year-old Denise McNair. Immediately after the blast, church members wandered dazed and bloodied, covered with white

powder and broken stained glass, before starting to dig in the rubble to search for survivors. More than 20 other members of the congregation were injured in the blast.

When thousands of angry black protesters assembled at the crime scene, Wallace sent hundreds of police and state troopers to the area to break up the crowd. Two young black men were killed that

night, one by police and another by racist thugs. Meanwhile, public outrage over the bombing continued to grow, drawing international attention to Birmingham.

At a funeral for three of the girls (one’s family preferred a separate, private service), King addressed more than 8,000 mourners.

charged with murder and with buying 122 sticks of dynamite. In October 1963, Chambliss was cleared of the murder charge and received a six-month jail sentence and a $100 fine for the dynamite.

Although a subsequent FBI investigation identified three other men–Bobby Frank Cherry, Herman Cash and Thomas E. Blanton, Jr.–as having helped Chambliss commit the crime, it was later revealed that FBI director J. Edgar Hoover blocked their prosecution and shut down the investigation without filing charges in 1968. After Alabama Attorney General Bill Baxley reopened the case, Chambliss was convicted in 1977 and sentenced to life in prison.

Here’s a timeline of all the events surrounding the bombing: • September 15, 1963 – Four girls are killed and 14 injured in a bomb blast at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. • Riots break out, and two African American boys, Virgil Ware, 13, and Johnny Robinson, 16, are also killed. In all, at least 20 people are injured from the initial bombing and the ensuing riots.

• Alabama Governor George Wallace sends 500 National Guardsmen and 300 state troopers to the city.

The next day, they are joined by 500 police officers and 150 sheriffs’ deputies.

• September 16, 1963 – President John F. Kennedy responds by saying, “If these cruel and tragic events can only awaken that city and state – if they can only awaken this entire nation to a realization of the folly of racial injustice and hatred and violence, then it is not too late for all concerned to unite in steps toward peaceful (Continued on pg. 15)
