On Monday, September 25, 2017, the African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, along with Town Bank, hosted a"Planning for a Healthy Business Workshop." The free workshop took place at Town Bank, at 140 South 1st Street and was lead by Town Bank Vice President of Commercial Banking Ranell Washington (back row, far left). The workshop gave as-

piring and current small business owners a chance to network; as well as provided vital information on starting and maintaining the financial health of a small business and how to best plan for the future of that business. Workshop attendees also were able to learn of the services that Town Bank could offer them.

North Division Alumni Association hosts first "Lunch with Students" of 2017 On Thursday, September 21, 2017, the North Division Alumni Association hosted its first "Lunch with Students" of the 2017-2018 school year. "Lunch With Students" will take place the third Thursday of each month during first and second lunch period. The goal with these sessions is for students to get to know the North Division alumni volunteers and to learn what concerns the current student body has and how best the alumni association can address them. In previous years, these sessions have lead to the alumni association setting up a volunteer after school tutoring program, starting a holiday food bank for student families in need, and gathering donated clothing and personal care products for students in need. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Local Vets on a mission of hope Curtis Fisher was born and raised in Milwaukee. He has lived here for most of his life, but for 20 years Fisher was a member of the armed forces, until he suffered a disabling injury when he was wounded in a vehicle accident during Operation Desert Storm. He received his honorable discharge from the military in 1992. On August 28, 2017, Fisher said he could not sleep and eventually posted a Facebook message to his home page announcing that he had not heard from some family members since before Hurricane Harvey slammed into Texas the day before. He said that he was seriously considering renting a truck and driving it down to Houston full of donated food, water, clothes and personal hygiene supplies. Being a veteran, Fisher knew he had the training and disaster relief skills which would help him be an asset to the recovery effort, and he wanted to contribute. The next morning, several friends – some of whom he

only knew through Facebook – had responded saying they were willing to help, too. One accompanied Fisher to the U-Haul dealership located at 5701 West Good Hope Rd. The store manager offered a substantial discount because he assumed it was for an official rescue effort. But when Fisher arrived at the counter and explained that he was a veteran determined to put together and complete a personal “a mission” to deliver relief supplies to Texas, the manager, who was also a veteran, gave Fisher an even bigger discount.

plies after driving 17 hours straight through to Houston. Less than 24 hours before the squad was scheduled to depart Milwaukee, they heard from County Supervisor Taylor, who said she wanted to join the relief effort and squad. Since then, the squad has made two more relief trips. Fisher said Team MKE Disaster Relief Squad has already collected another full truck load of relief supplies, but they need financial assistance to rent a truck. Fisher has set up an account with www.popmoney. com, an encrypted, secure website which allows individuals to transfer money Troy Cotton, Sr. (left), Curtis Fisher, leader of Team MKE safely and directly from one Disaster Relief Squad; Anthony Lee, Murphy Johnson banking account to another, according to information on and Davon Williams assist Fisher with his second to last the popmoney website. Fisher organized his team into the civilian equivalent of a military squad, complete with a name: Team MKE Disaster Relief Squad. Harambee neighborhood hosts Black Women's Empowerment March On Saturday, September 30, 2017, Uplifting Black Liberation and Community (UBLAC) joined local leaders Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, State Senator Lena Taylor, State Senator LaTonya Johnson, County Supervisor Sequanna Taylor and Alderwoman Chantia Lewis to take part in "The Black Women's Empowerment March." The march started at Victory Over Violence Park and continued through the Harambee neighborhood and finished at Crossing Jordan Ministries, 606 W. Concordia Ave. The event was a positive show of unity and helped bring awareness to the oppressive treatment of Black women and how to better promote self-empowerment. This march coincided with the National March of Racial Justice in Washington, DC.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Mental health matters! (Week 2) Mental Health Matters! Bringing awareness to mental health gets people talking about it, which in turn, helps to remove the stigma surrounding mental illness. This month, this writer joins with NAMI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in shining a light on mental illness. Last week this column highlighted the early warning signs of a mental health problem, identified by the Dept. of Health and Human Services. This week, this writer will look first at Mental Health and Wellness, followed by how community and faith leaders can create community connections for mental health. Mental health and wellness The Dept. of Health and Human Services says positive mental health allows people to: • Realize their full potential • Cope with the stresses of life • Work productively • Make meaningful contributions to their communities Ways to maintain positive mental health include: • Getting professional help if

you need it • Connecting with others • Staying positive • Getting physically active • Helping others • Getting enough sleep • Developing coping skills Community and faith leaders: Creating community connections for mental health. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also believes religious and other community organizations can play an important role in supporting individuals living with mental illnesses and encouraging them to seek help. These leaders are often the first point of contact when individuals and families face mental health problems or traumatic events. In times of crisis, many will turn to trusted leaders in their communities before they turn to mental health professionals. When leaders know how to respond, they become significant assets to the overall health system. Faith and community leaders can help educate individuals and families about mental health, increasing awareness

of mental health issues and making it easier for people to seek help. Community connectedness and support, like that found in faith-based and other neighborhood organizations, are also important to the long-term recovery of people living with mental illnesses. Faith communities are also in a unique position to reach many of the millions of Americans who struggle with serious thoughts of suicide each year. Many people having thoughts of suicide feel hopeless, trapped, or are in such emotional pain or despair that they struggle to face another day. Suicidal

thoughts are often accompanied by a spiritual crisis or deep questioning about the purpose of life. If faith leaders are better able to recognize the signs of suicide and learn how to respond, they can serve as an expanded safety net for those most in need. Getting help: People often don’t get the mental health services they need because they don’t know where to start. The Department of Health & Human Services suggests: • Talk to your primary care doctor or another health professional about mental health problems. Ask them to connect you with the right mental health services. • If you do not have a health professional who can assist you, use these resources to find help for yourself, your friends, your family, or your students: Emergency Medical Services – 911. If the situation is potentially life-threatening, get immediate emergency assistance by calling 911, available 24 hours a day. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – 1-800-

Eight foods to lift depression According to the World Health Organization, 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. If you have diabetes, you are three to four times more likely to have depression than people in the general population. It’s quite common to feel depressed after a diabetes diagnosis. You may believe you must give up your favorite foods or way of life, or you may feel you have no control over the complications of diabetes. There is no right or wrong way to feel. However, if these feelings linger, they can interfere with your diabetic self-care. If you are too depressed to cook, you’re less likely to eat healthy diabetes-friendly food. If you can’t get motivated to get out of bed, you’re going to miss the benefits of exercising. When it comes to diabetes self-management, it is just as important to take care of your mental and emotional health as your physical health. A healthy mind is dependent on a healthy body. Moreover, healthy eating can help fight depression. So, try to incorporate these mood-boosting foods into your healthy eating plan. Greens Dark green leafy vegetables are an ideal way to get folate and vitamin B6. A deficiency in folate is associated with anxiety and depression.

Nuts Full of protein and other nutrients, nuts can be good for your brain health as well. With mood-boosting vitamins and minerals such as folate, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and phenylalanine, nuts are a fantastic addition to your diet. A few of the best nuts for your mental health include walnuts, almonds, and cashews.

Olive oil People with diets rich in mono- and polyunsaturat-

ed fats have been shown to have lower rates of depression. Olive oil is considered a “healthy” fat full of monounsaturated fatty acids and has been shown to help protect against depression. So, swap out your butter and margarine and opt for olive oil instead. Just remember when it comes to calories fat is fat, so use it in moderation!

Dark chocolate It is no secret that dark chocolate is a feel-good food, but the truth is there’s science behind that secret. Dark chocolate stimulates the release of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that help you maintain a positive mood. It also contains serotonin to help combat depression. Remember, dark chocolate is high in calories and carbohydrate, so moderation is important. If you are depressed or think you may be depressed, it’s important to seek help from your healthcare provider.

Five autumn safety tips for seniors As autumn leaves start to fall and the air turns crisp, older adults face seasonal challenges to their health. The cold and flu season is just getting started, and there are other cold-weather threats to a senior’s health and safety that can be minimized by following a few basic guidelines. Here are five tips for seniors to follow to stay healthy and safe during the colder seasons. 1. Get the flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that adults aged 65 and older get a flu vaccine each year, ideally by the end of October. While the flu shot is recommended for every person above six months of age, seniors are especially at risk for complications from the flu, such as pneumonia, bronchitis and ear infections. The flu can also make any chronic health problems worse. There are two types of flu shots specially designed for seniors. Ask your health care provider which one would be best for you. 2. Be wary of tripping hazards. People generally experience stiffer joints in colder weather. Not only might it be a bit harder to move around, but it gets dark out early, the ground is often wet or frozen, and fallen leaves create slipping hazards or even cover up hazardous rocks that you can trip on. Make sure leaves are cleared from sidewalks and driveways on your property and that all walkways are illuminated to reduce your chances of a fall. Sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy sidewalks. Stretch before going outside to warm up stiff muscles.

thermia can be a life-threatening condition that occurs when an individual’s body temperature drops below normal and remains low for a period of time. Being over the age of 60, having health conditions like diabetes or hypothyroidism, and taking certain medications all make you more susceptible to the cold. You can develop hypothermia even after exposure to mild cold temperatures, according to the National Institutes of Health. Dress in layered, loose-fitting clothing. Dress warmly and wear a hat when going outside. Keep your indoor temperature at a minimum of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. If you need help paying your heating bills, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services may be able to help. The Eldercare Locator is a

5. Eliminate fire risks. Check that electrical appliances, like electrical blankets, are in good condition without fraying cords. Space heaters are common sources of fires. Make sure they’re placed far away from flammable surfaces. Autumn is an excellent time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Wealth Building

By Nathaniel Sillin Director of Visa’s financial education programs

What college students should learn about money As you prepare for a new year at college, managing your money may be the last thing on your mind. But, college is the perfect time to instill strong and healthy financial habits, such as budgeting and living within your means. By starting on the right foot with good saving and spending habits, you'll have a good chance to set yourself up for a life of financial success. Here are some ideas students – with the help of parents, relatives and the school's financial aid office – can consider while taking the leap into living away from home. Create a financial plan early on. Create a general financial plan for your college years right away, and a more detailed budget for the upcoming semester. You can start with estimated costs for tuition, fees, room and board from your school's financial aid office and fill in the actual numbers once you know them. Even with financial aid, most college students need to be frugal as they balance major expenses and a limited income from work or

parental support. While you may need to take out student loans, the better you manage your personal and educational expenses, the less you'll have to borrow now, and repay later. Adjust your budget as you go. Your focus should be school, but you can also take time to track your money and stick to your budget. A budget can be a tool and a learning opportunity, and particularly during your first few semesters, you'll likely have to make adjustments as you learn to balance wants and needs. Try to stick with it and remember it's okay to make changes (and an occasional mistake) as you go. Parents can discuss how they manage their personal or family budget and of-

fer suggestions for cutting expenses or finding work. College students may face many financial firsts, such as signing a rental agreement, purchasing insurance or applying for a loan, and parents can share their experiences and advice. Make your budget add up. Learning how to roll with the punches and live within your means are timeless skills. You'll have to balance academic obligations with a part- or full-time job to increase your income. But, there are often flexible on-campus jobs you can qualify for if you have a work-study grant as part of your financial aid package. When it comes to saving, there are all sorts of ways to cut costs on necessities and

indulgences. Consider the following three tactics almost any college student can use to spend less money. • Use student discounts. Dozens of stores offer students discounts, validated with an official ID, or a .edu email address, and you may be able to save 10 to 20 percent off your purchase. Ask store employees or check online before to see if a store offers a student discount before checking out. • Save on textbooks. Look for alternatives to buying new textbooks, such as renting textbooks, buying used books, purchasing or renting e-textbooks or using the library's reference copies. • Mobilize your savings. If saving money is just one more thing you don't want to think about, you can save your spare cash via your smartphone. Thinking about buying a car next summer or saving money for spring break? There are mobile apps that will calculate how much money you can afford to save at a given moment – whether that's $20 or ten cents – and will save it for you. You could also set up an automatic weekly or monthly transfer to your savings

account through your bank. Chances are you won't miss the money, and you won't spend it if you don't see it in your checking account. Make a practice of saving for the future. You'll want to figure out the best way to use your savings. If you've taken out student loans, you could allocate some of the money to early loan payments. Private and unsubsidized federal student loans accrue interest while you're in school. Making a payment can help you avoid increasing your debt load and save you money on interest. Plus, unlike with some other types of loans, there's no penalty for making early student loan payments. Bottom line. College is an ideal time to instill healthy financial habits. Ask your parents or other relatives for guidance, discuss student loans and budgeting with your college's financial aid office, learn a new skill online or attend a local personal finance workshop or seminar. While you set off on a series of firsts, take advantage of these resources to learn how to manage, save and wisely spend your money.

Hot Mikado (Continued from pg. 13) Hot Mikado’s cast of 14 is directed by Austene Van and choreographed by Garry Q. Lewis. A six-piece band performs live on stage throughout the show. This musical comedy is a story of ill-fated lovers, madcap power struggles, a love triangle and outlandish laws that are followed to illogical ends. The action takes place in a 1940s nightclub that director Van described as “resonating with the feel of a Cotton Club, where African-American culture was embraced by audiences, while at the same time things were hidden from them.” Hot Mikado opened September 29 and has been met by cheering audiences and standing ovations. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called it “a well-crafted, high-energy, jazz infused romp” and said “Jamecia Bennett blew the walls down – twice – singing the role of Katisha with a thrilling combination of power and style.” Bennett just announced that while she is in Milwaukee, she will present a special One Night Only cabaret on Monday, October 9, at 7:30 p.m. Bennett will perform with the local band Cigarette Break at Skylight’s Bar & Bistro in the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. $20, general admission, cash only at the door. Hot Mikado continues through Sunday, October 15, 2017 in the Cabot Theatre, 158 N. Broadway, in the Historic Third Ward of Milwaukee. Based on the operetta The Mikado written by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, Hot Mikado features book and lyrics adapted by David H. Bell, and music adapted and arranged by Rob Bowman. Tickets and box office Tickets are $30 - $75 (plus tax and fees) and can be purchased in person at the Broadway Theatre Center
