Alderman Hamilton pushes for community listening sessions for reckless drivers Milwaukee Common Council President Ashanti Hamilton (center front row) proposed a series of community listening sessions during brief remarks at a rally against reckless driving from 4-5 p.m., at the corner of 31st St. and W. Capitol Dr., on October 9, 2017. President Hamilton said that reckless drivers have not changed their driving in response to increased enforcement efforts by the police and municipal government; and he asked for the public to speak out and make the issue a more significant priority. The rally was organized as an invitation from Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, who said his hope "was to address the growing number of deadly reckless driving incidences.” On October 2, 2017 a 27-year-old woman and her 11-monthold daughter were killed near 35th and W. Capitol Dr., after another driver disregarded a red light and struck their vehicle, killing them both instantly, according to news reports.

Health Commissioner marks 7th Annual Strong Baby Sabbath Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Commissioner of Health Bevan K. Baker, FACHE (picture at left) marked Milwaukee’s 7th annual Strong Baby Sabbath by visiting area churches, including Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church (3456 N. 38th St.), to share a message of support for families. A collaboration with Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital and the faith community, the Strong Baby Sabbath asks churches to partner in a day of raising awareness of the top two preventable causes of infant deaths in Milwaukee: premature births and unsafe sleeping environments. On average, 100 Milwaukee infants die before their first birthdays, with nearly 66 percent of African American infant deaths a result of complications of prematurity. Additionally, half of the sleep-related infant deaths in Milwaukee occur to infants who were born prematurely. The Strong Baby Sabbath is one day of a year-round effort that supports the goal of reducing Milwaukee’s overall infant mortality rate by 10 percent and the African American infant mortality rate by 15 percent. Pastor Martin Childs, Jr., D. Min., is the pastor of Pilgrim Rest MBC. www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Milwaukee Public Library opens new state-of-the-art Mitchell Street branch

Staff Photos

Brilliant sunshine flooded through the enormous street-level windows of the new $5.7 million Mitchell Street Public Library Branch during its official opening at 906 W. Mitchell St., on October 7, 2017. Present for the ceremony were Mayor Tom Barrett, Milwaukee Public Library Director Paula Kiely and other city dignitaries, library supporters and members of the community. With

23,000 square feet, the new location is the largest branch in the Milwaukee Public Library system and replaces the former Forest Home branch at 14th and Mitchell. Original terrazzo floors, ornate plaster columns and mahogany railings have all been restored and updated to reflect an inviting, modern library space on the first three floors of the former Hill’s Department Store, an architectural

jewel originally built in 1920 and named The Lion Store. The building had a number of short-term tenants and then remained vacant for decades after Hill’s Department store closed in 1963, as suburban flight and new malls replaced the neighborhood as a major retail destination. The three levels of library space include 42,000 periodicals; and a ‘maker space’ in the basement which includes so-

phisticated digital sound and photography equipment for producing recordings, podcasts and video streaming. The basement also includes a generously stocked graphics arts studio and kitchen for culinary arts training. There are also a number of computers, including 12 laptops for use throughout the library. Free Wi-Fi and parking are also available. A press release noted that the library

plans to offer free classes on subjects as diverse as basic computer and literacy skills up to and including how to operate its digital equipment. Above the library are 52 market-rate luxury condominiums which helped secure the complex financing package which includes tax credits, City of Milwaukee financing and significant support from the Milwaukee Public Library Foundation.

The queen is returning Black women standing tall is a beautiful thing. The key to any victory in the African American community is the black woman. It is the women of all races that nurture and raise the children. With this in mind you can understand the need for strong black women. If black women can indeed raise their level the black race will rise again. The black woman in her natural pride and glory is the most beautiful thing on the planet. A black woman who walks with dignity and stature is a prize that has no price. It has been said that the black woman had a higher value in the USA than a white woman when slavery began. This makes sense from a control standpoint. If one is going to control and shape another race you have to shape and control their women. It is good to see marches like the one that took place in Milwaukee showing black women standing tall. I can hear the weak men of all races complaining about black women standing tall. “These women run their mouths too much.” Or, “You can’t tell them anything already.” In many cases both statements are true about black females. With the sad state of many African Amer-

ican men, who can blame any women for complaining? Are there negative black women in the world? Yes. Only a fool would say otherwise. The question is, do these women have potential to become forces of good? The impact of a new found sense of pride in black women is immeasurable. What type of effect would a proud, natural black woman have on a family? The main thing she could influence would be the offspring. A strong black mother would shape her female offspring to be similar. I am not talking about the proverbial “battle axe” type of wife, but a nurturing one. The daughter of a strong black woman would have pride in herself and understand what she is. Knowing that she is the most

An NCON Communications Publication

prized possession on the planet would boost her self worth. This would keep such a daughter from settling for inferior mates. How would better breeding choices by all races impact the world? The impact a strong black woman would have on a son is just as powerful. The black woman would expect him to be a strong black man. This would automatically reshape the neutered African American male. One problem that has plagued the world is the over-protective African American mother. This over-protective mother is an enabler. This enabling often leads to a weak man who usually becomes a leech on society and other African American females. I’m so glad to see black women on the rise. For years I watched with pain in my heart as the black woman shifted into the African American mold. The Afros became foreign hair weaves. The brick house body type became barns and mud shacks. The pride of the world became chattel

for anyone with a fistful of one-dollar bills. The Black Queen was transmuted into a willing 2017 version of Kizzy from Roots. Hopefully this slide is at an end and the Black Queen is back. The world surely needs her. Frank James IV © 2017 beingfrankwithfrank@ gmail.com

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Mental health matters! (Week 3) Once again, Mental Health Matters! Bringing awareness to mental health gets people talking about it which in turn help to remove the stigma surrounding mental health. This month, this writer joins with NAMI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in shining a light on mental illness. Last week this column introduced ways the community and faith can create community connections for mental health. This week will discuss what community and faith leaders can do to promote mental health awareness. The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS.gov) suggests: 1. Educate your communities and congregations. • Promote awareness by educating the members of your communities and congregations about mental health issues through educational forums and other opportunities. • Invite local mental health experts – including those who have experienced mental illness – to speak with your congregation or at community gatherings. • Share facts and common

myths about mental health. • Support the development of a trauma-informed community. Trauma often lies beneath seemingly unrelated problems. 2. Identify opportunities to support people with mental illnesses. • Consider offering your organization’s meeting spaces for community conversations and support groups focused on addressing mental health issues. • Provide space for peerled groups that give people the chance to tell their stories in their own time and way. • Include safe shared spaces for people to interact (for example, parks and community centers) that can foster healthy relationships and positive mental health among community members. 3. Connect individuals and families to help. • Strengthen the connec-

tions within your community to mental health services and support and enhance linkages between mental health, substance abuse, disability, and other social services. • Learn the basic signs of mental illnesses and other facts about mental health to encourage those in need to seek help. • Remind others that people can and do recover from mental health challenges and that help is available and effective. • Train key community members (such as adults who work with the children,

youth, older adults, veterans, and LGBT) to identify the signs of depression and suicide and refer people to resources. Getting help: People often don’t get the mental health services they need because they don’t know where to start. The Department of Health & Human Services suggests: • Talk to your primary care doctor or another health professional about mental health problems. Ask them to connect you with the right mental health services. • If you do not have a health professional who can assist you, use these resources to find help for yourself, your friends, your family, or your students:

vention Lifeline – 1 (800) 273-TALK (8255) or live online chat at: http://chat.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ GetHelp/LifelineChat.aspx SAMHSA Treatment Referral Helpline – 1-877-SAMHSA7 (1-877726-4727). Get general information on mental health and locate treatment services in our area. Speak to a live person, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST.

MPS students receive free dental care The Marquette School of Dentistry was bustling on Saturday, October 7, 2017 as families brought children age 3 to 16 for free dental check-ups. Dozens of dental students and faculty were on hand to provide screenings, fluoride treatments, and emergency services, and to educate children about proper brushing and care of their teeth. Sponsored by the Milwaukee Public Schools Head Start Office, approximately 500 children departed with healthier smiles following

their visits. Children received toothbrushes, toothpaste and other items to help them care for their teeth daily. The Tooth Fairy made a special visit to chat with children and take photos. "Dental problems are easy to prevent when children begin care at a young age,” said Erica Harris Day, MPS Head Start Program Supervisor. “We’re so grateful to Marquette University for providing care that will help students stay healthy and succeed in school.” Dental pain is a leading

cause of missed school days for children. Dental care at an early age can help children learn good habits and keep their teeth healthy throughout their lifetimes. The Dental Day program educates children and provides early prevention for minor issues that could become serious later on. Teaching children how to be healthy aligns with MPS’ Eight Big Ideas to promote student achievement. Healthy habits increase student attendance and help students achieve in school.

The 33rd Annual prove our nutrition program for all students at Milwaukee Public Schools. Because of the importance of good nutrition, MPS offers free breakfast and lunch to every student through the Community Eligibility Provision. The school nutrition program is continually challenged to meet federal guidelines while providing meals that are appealing to children. "A hungry child can't learn," said MPS superintendent Darienne Driver. "Good nutrition is critical to learning and to lifelong health. School meals often make up the majority of students' nutrition throughout the day and we want to do our very best for our students."

The

Milwaukee Public Schools invites families and the community to attend listening sessions about improvements to the school meal program. Throughout October, sessions will be held across the district to gather input about breakfasts and lunches served to students. Seven foods to fight foggy brain Battling foggy brain? Happens to everyone, right? It begins with something small, like ‘where did I park the car?’ Until, you realize that you’re experiencing a series of brain farts: can’t find the car keys, missed appointments – the day before may even feel like a blur. It’s almost like a smokescreen, which you just can’t seem to punch through. While this may also sound a bit like “pregnancy brain,” one small study also found that “people with depression or bipolar disorder often feel their thinking ability has gotten “fuzzy,” or less sharp than before their symptoms began. Now, researchers have shown in a very large study that effect is indeed real and rooted in brain activity differences that show up on advanced brain scans.” Furthermore, the results indicate the conditions may fall under the spectrum of

“mood disorders.” The significance? The new data could transform the way doctors diagnose and treat them. In the meantime, improve cognitive function, enhance memory and prevent neurodegenerative diseases with these powerful brain-boosting foods. • Avocado is rich in vitamin E. In case you didn’t already know, research states

that the important antioxidant — containing monounsaturated fats which contributes to healthy blood flow — helps improve the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins from foods, in turn, promoting healthy brain aging and delaying AD-related functional decline. • Celery, which boasts luteolin — a flavonoid antioxidant which aids in protecting the brain from inflammation,

cognitive aging and neurodegenerative diseases — can enhance memory, learning and spatial awareness. • Cocoa is rich in flavanols and antioxidants – both which have been proven to help boost overall brain function. According to a study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “people who consumed medium and high amounts of cocoa flavanols every day made significant improvements on tests that measured attention, executive function, and memory.” • Eggs are loaded with choline, a type of B-vitamin proven to enhance memory and overall cognitive function. Think beef, fish, asparagus, collard greens and brussels sprouts – all great sources of the powerful nutrient. • Salmon, rich in omega-3 fats, has been linked to a re-

duction in age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s and general improvement in mood. Experts recommend a 4-ounce serving, two to three times per week. • Spinach isn’t just for Popeye. It’s high in lutein, an antioxidant which protects the brain against free radicals and inflammation. The importance? Research shows that free radicals have been linked to mental decline in old age and is also a probable factor in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Good sources of lutein
are kale, chard, collards and egg yolks. • Yogurt is a great source of probiotics. The live bacteria are beneficial for gut health. Studies have also shown that taking probiotic supplements may boost mood, lower stress, and anxiety.

Dynamic Sphinx Virtuosi to perform 20th anniversary concert at Wilson Center Concerti per Venti Program features nation’s top Black and Latino Classical soloists

A celebration of concerti through the ages awaits audiences as the dynamic and diverse Sphinx Virtuosi bring their 20th Anniversary tour to the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts (Wilson Center) on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. Comprised of 18 of the nation’s top Black and Latino classical soloists, alumni of the internationally renowned Sphinx Competition come together each fall as cultural ambassadors to reach new audiences. From Baroque to modern day, this year’s exciting Concerti per Venti program has something for every listener, including the newly commissioned Guardian of the Horizon: Concerto Grosso for Violin, Cello, and Strings, by award-winning composer Jimmy Lopez (co-commissioned by the Sphinx Organization, with the support of Linda

and Stuart Nelson, Carnegie Hall, and New World Center in honor of Sphinx’s 20th Anniversary Celebration); Delights and Dances by Michael Abels, a three-movement work for string quartet and string orchestra (commissioned by Sphinx in 2012); Concerto Grosso

by Vaughan Williams; and Beethoven’s timeless Grosse Fugue. Tickets for this onenight-only concert are $25$39 (prices subject to increase based on demand) and may be purchased online at www.wilson-center.com, via phone at 262-781-9520, or in person at the Wilson Center

Box Office, located at 19805 W. Capitol Drive in Brookfield’s Mitchell Park. This unique ensemble earned rave reviews from The New York Times during its highly acclaimed 2004 debut at Carnegie Hall. Allan Kozinn described their performance as “first-rate in

every way” and “the ensemble produced a more beautiful, precise and carefully shaped sound than some fully professional orchestras that come through Carnegie Hall in the course of the year.” The Sphinx Virtuosi have returned to Carnegie Hall annually since 2006 performing to sold-out halls and earning outstanding reviews each year. At once a bridge between minority communities and the classical music establishment, the Sphinx Virtuosi continue to garner critical acclaim during their annual national tours to many of the leading venues around the country. New York Concert Review calls Sphinx Virtuosi “… brilliant, fierce, dedicated, and inspiring … celebrating the eve of their twentieth year of standing as a sort of rebuke to the hidebound institutions of classical music—insisting on representation, participation, education, and development of Black and Latino musicians … beautifully played … absolutely haunting.” Held every year in Detroit, MI, the Sphinx Competition is open to all junior high, high school, and college-age Black and Latino string players residing in the United States. The Sphinx Competition offers young Black and Latino classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with established professional musicians in a competition setting. Its primary goals are to encourage, develop, and recognize classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities. The 2017 Sphinx Virtuosi national tour is made possible by their lead corporate sponsor, JPMorgan Chase. Sphinx Virtuosi’s October 27th performance is part of the Wilson Center’s 2017/2018 Performing Arts Series and is made possible by the support of Wilson Center Residency Sponsor Herzfeld Foundation.
