Diahann Carroll, pioneering star of 'Julia' and 'Dynasty,' dead at 84 Diahann Carroll, who pioneered television with her starring role in the 1968 series Julia, died Friday, her daughter Suzanne Kay confirmed to CNN. Carroll was 84. She died early Friday, October 4, 2019, following a battle with breast cancer, according to her publicist Jeffery Lane. Known as much for her talent as she was her beauty and elegance, Carroll was beloved for her work in Julia, as well as her subsequent performance as the wealthy and cultured Dominique Deveraux in the 1980s ABC primetime soap opera Dynasty. She became the first African American woman to star in a network sitcom not revolving around a stereotypical character when Julia premiered on NBC in 1968. Her role as widowed nurse Julia Baker, who was raising a charming young son, also broke ground for its portrayal of a black woman as something other than a domestic worker. But while some called Ju-

In 1998, Carroll told the Television Academy Foundation she was reluctant to do the series. "I really didn't believe that this was a show that was going to work," she said of

Julia. "I thought it was something that was going to relieve someone's conscience for a very short period of time and I really thought 'Let them go elsewhere.'" The series earned her an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe award. Carroll already had an established career by that point. Born Carol Diann Johnson in New York City, she attended the New York High School of Music and Art. At the age of 16, she adopted the name Diahann Carroll and won an audition for the Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts television show. The opportunity led to radio performances, modeling work and singing in nightclubs.

Carroll made her Broadway debut in 1954 in the musical The House of Flowers, which also starred Pearl Bailey and Juanita Hall. She appeared in her first film, the now classic Carmen Jones, starring Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge, that same year. Carroll performed in Las Vegas and released several albums early on, including Diahann Carroll Sings Harold Arlen (1957), Diahann Carroll and Andre Previn (1960) and The Fabulous Diahann Carroll (1962). It was on Broadway, however, where Carroll hit her stride. She became the first African-American woman to win a Tony for best actress when she snagged the coveted award for her portrayal as Barbara Woodruff in the 1962 musical No Strings. She went on to receive an Oscar nomination for the 1974 movie Claudine, in which she starred opposite James Earl Jones. Carroll once again changed the television landscape in the 1980s when she became the first major African American character on a primetime soap in Dynasty. Her character, the previously referenced Dominique Deveraux (which she also played on the spinoff The Colbys), served as an antagonist to Alexis Carrington, played by Joan Collins.

In an interview her first day on the set in 1984, Carroll said she wanted to be "the first black b***h on television." "I've never played a role quite this unlikeable," she said. "And I like that. I like that very much because I think very often, particularly minorities, it's almost required of them that they are nice people." Carroll's personal life was no less glamorous. She was married four times: to record producer Monte Kay from 1956 to 1963 during which time they had a daughter, Suzanne; briefly to Las Vegas boutique owner Fred Glusman in 1973; to Jet magazine managing editor Robert DeLeon from 1975 until his death two years later in a car crash; and to singer Vic Damone from 1987 to 1996. In the 1990s, Carroll won a new legion of fans playing Whitney Gilbert's mother, Marion, on A Different World and the new millennium found Carroll appearing on multiple TV shows, including Grey's Anatomy and Diary of a Single Mom. Her last credited role was as Miss Edna in the 2016 film The Masked Saint. Carroll is survived by her daughter and her grandchildren, August and Sydney

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Seek beauty, not ego confusion

The voice in our heads or ego is what affects our perception of the world around us. If we allow our ego to run unchecked we never have a chance to understand that we are beautiful people. The ego will have you worrying about problems that never manifest and fighting imaginary battles. With all of this ego chaos running amok in your head, how can you see any form of beauty? Have you ever taken the time to just listen to the

thoughts or the voice in your head? Just sit back and close your eyes one day and listen to what it is saying. If you are feeling peaceful the ego will remind or create problems that either you can’t do anything about or don’t exist. Try this: sit down for 10 minutes with your eyes closed and just listen to your thoughts. If you think television is entertaining, listen to the plots the ego comes up with. The world is a beautiful place. There are more calm

serene areas in the world than there are masses of confusion. A normal person has more people they can tolerate than those they can’t stand in their life. Yet many people focus on the confusion and people they dislike and this makes for an angry day and frustrated life. Of course this view is colored severely by the ego. If a person doesn’t understand how the ego is playing with them like a cat with a mouse, they will find themselves constantly preparing for battles that never manifest. The ego is a main contributor to hypertension. The ego will have your blood pressure skyrocketing over imaginary battles because of petty slights that no one else remembers. As the world turns there are several ego-based confusing events taking place. What matters to individuals, is what is taking place in their own head. The energy expended worrying about

issues that can’t be changed or hating people that aren’t thinking about you should be used for personal growth. Let go of the confusion that the ego drops in your lap constantly. Do not be afraid to answer ego questions like Stuart Wilde suggested, “I don’t know. I don’t care.” If you start doing this you will gradually release mental issues and life will become fun and beautiful again. Trust me on this. One thing to ponder in closing. Are you the voice talking in your head? Or are you the being listening to the voice? Frank James IV © 2019 beingfrankwithfrank@ gmail.com The opinions expressed in this editorial are those of the writer and not of the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper or NCON Communication, its staff or management. "Being Frank" is a bi-weekly column exclusive to the Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper.

The

Today is a beautiful day and you are a wonderful person. These are words people should hear the voice in their head tell them at least 100 times a day. The truth is everyone is beautiful and life is wonderful. What keeps people from understanding these two things is often the ego. The ego, if not channeled properly, can ruin a beautiful day and create a miserable life. Can you feel the blood pulsing through your veins? Does the sunshine warm your inner being? Do you wake up feeling good only to have the voice in your head remind you of something that doesn’t matter? In a perfect world everyone would answer yes to the first two questions and no to the third. In 2019 some people may answer yes to one or both of the first two questions but the majority answer yes to the third. The voice in our heads can help us live a great life or send us screaming into opiate abuse.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Intimate Partner Violence Month: Domestic violence against men (Week 2) Domestic violence — also known as domestic abuse, battering or intimate partner violence — occurs between people in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence against men can take many forms, including emotional, sexual and physical abuse and threats of abuse. It can happen in heterosexual or same sex relationships. It might not be easy to recognize intimate partner violence against men. Early in the relationship, your partner might seem attentive, generous and protective in ways that later turn out to be controlling and frightening. Initially, the abuse might appear as isolated incidents. Your partner might apologize and promise not to abuse you again. In other relationships, domestic violence against men might include both partners slapping or shoving each other when they get angry — and neither partner seeing himself or herself as being abused or controlled. This type of violence, however, can still devastate a relationship, causing both physical and emotional damage. The Mayo Clinic* indicates the following signs of domestic

power of control include: • Threats of “outing” a partner’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Abusive partners in LGBTQ+ relationships may be threatened to “out” victims to family members, friends, colleagues or community members. • Says no one will help a gay, bisexual or transgender person. • Justifies abuse by telling one that they are not "really" gay, bisexual or transgender. (i.e. the victim may once have had/may still have relationships, or express a gender identity, inconsistent with the abuser’s definitions of these terms.) Beloved, domestic violence against men can have devastating effects. Although you may not be able to stop your partner's abusive behavior, you can seek help. Remember, no one deserves to be abused. NO ONE! If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence/ abuse, seek help IMMEDIATELY. In an emergency, call 911. For additional resources contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE or 800-7997233. The national hotline provides crisis intervention

for a difference in strength. • Forces you to have sex or engage in sexual acts against your will. • Blames you for his or her violent behavior or tells you that you deserve it. Abusive partners in LGBTQ+ relationships use all the same tactics to gain power and control as abusive partners in heterosexual relationships – physical, sexual or emotional abuse, financial control, isolation and more, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. LGBTQ+ abusive partners also reinforce their tactics that maintain power and control with societal factors that compound the complexity a survivor faces in leaving or getting safe in an LGBTQ+ relationship. Some tactics of

violence if your partner: • Calls you names, insults you or puts you down. • Prevents you from going to work or school. • Stops you from seeing family members or friends. • Tries to control how you spend money, where you go or what you wear. • Acts jealous or possessive or constantly accuses you of being unfaithful. • Gets angry when drinking alcohol or using drugs. • Threatens you with violence or a weapon. • Hits, kicks, shove, slaps, chokes or otherwise hurts you, your children or your pets. • Assaults you while you're sleeping, you've been drinking or you're not paying attention to make up

Mentor sessions and programs support MPS Black and Latino youth The Black & Latino Male Achievement (BLMA) Department in Milwaukee Public Schools kicked off its monthly mentoring program this week at the Fiserv Forum. Nearly 250 young men from seven MPS high schools were present along with dozens of volunteer mentors from around the community. Mayor Tom Barrett was in attendance to offer his thanks for this program that supports our youth. Black and Latino male students in MPS will have opportunities to enjoy lunch with Black and Latino male mentors throughout the

school year to allow them to converse about topics to help them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Now in its third year, the First Thursday Mentor Luncheon program started with two schools and 60 students; this year, it has grown to seven sites and nearly 250 students.

Remembering the Life of Minnie Jewel Linyear Minnie Jewel Linyear

was born on August 1, 1946 in Americus, GA to the late Mr. Ernest Davis Sr. and Mrs. Sylvia Davis. Minnie graduated from Sumter High School (Americus, GA) in 1964 followed by receiving her bachelor's degree in Sociology at Xavier University (New Orleans, LA) in 1968 and later received a Master of Science in Management at Cardinal Stritch University in 1983 (Milwaukee, WI). Minnie accepted Christ at an early age as a member of Campbell Chapel AME Church in Americus, GA. As a young adult she continued her Christian journey as a Catholic when she joined St. Jerome Catholic Church also in Americus. Later when she arrived in Milwaukee, WI, she joined St. Boniface Church, ending her Christian journey as a tireless servant at St. Martin de Porres. Minnie was united in holy matrimony to Reginald Linyear on December 27, 1968, in Milwaukee, WI; to this union two children were born.

Minnie was a consummate human resources professional whose career spanned more than 50 years. She was committed in all aspects of her professional and personal volunteerism to ensuring people experienced fair and equitable work environments. She began her career with the Wisconsin Employment Service where she became the first affirmative action officer in the entire state of Wisconsin. After being recruited by Milwaukee County she developed and implemented the first affirmative action program for the County. Minnie left the public sector to become the director of human resources for St. Mary’s Hill Hospital implementing new initiatives and making key contributions leading to the integration of Columbia/St Mary’s hospitals. Eventually, she returned to Milwaukee County as an administrator for the John Doyle hospital. When the hospital closed she became director of human resources for Milwaukee County House of Corrections / Sheriff ’s department until her retirement in 2008.

In her leisure time, she engaged in activities that supported the dignity of the human being. She was a founding member of the Black Women’s Network, an organization committed to the empowerment and support of women in their careers. She also served on the board of the Adult Learning Center where she used her background in human resources to ensure fair and equitable employment practices. Additionally, she served in various leadership roles with the following organizations: St Vincent de Paul Society; Daystar Domestic Violence Shelter; the House of Peace and the Black Cath-

olic Ministry Commission where she coordinated the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Prayer Service. Minnie was a faithful and active member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Court #234, serving as Junior Daughter Councilor; mentoring many young girls over the years. She was also a member of the 4th Degree Ladies of Grace Evelyn Ashe Chapter #31. Family was important to Minnie. She shared her human resources expertise with the church by serving on the Personnel Practices Committee. One of her favorite missions was overseeing all aspects of the Food Pantry - which serves hundreds of families on an ongoing basis. Celebrating family was integral to her life. Whether spending time with her grandson Brenden, or caring for a relative in Louisiana or Georgia she always put their needs first in her selfless actions. Minnie and Reginald were consummate travelers visiting the Mediterranean including the Holy Land, China,

Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, Hawaii, Jamaica, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and a Western Tour covering the US National Parks - often returning with photos and stories to inspire others to travel. Every year she enjoyed celebrating Mardi Gras whether in Milwaukee or New Orleans. Ironically her professional and personal life came full circle as the place she once cared for her employees became the place that cared for her at the end of her time on earth. Minnie departed this world on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her sister Ernestine Davis She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 50 years Reginald Linyear of Milwaukee, WI; children, Derron Linyear of Miami, FL, Deatrice Linyear-Davis (Ronnie), Snellville, GA; Brother, Reverend Ernest Davis Jr. (Ret.), of Albany, GA; Brother-in-Law, Keith Linyear of New Orleans, LA; Grandson, Brenden Davis, of Snellville, GA; and a host of nephews and cousins.

AN EXPLORATION OF OUR LIVES AND LEGACIES

50 years after Black Power Fist, John Carlos and Tommie Smith to be inducted into Olympic Hall of Fame Originally, John Carlos and Tommie Smith planned to call for a boycott of the Olympics over the lack of Black coaches at the 1968 Olympics. But with a massacre in Mexico City happening 10 days before the opening of the games, the black-gloved fist was a “cry for freedom and for human rights,” as Smith said. Unfortunately, this gesture came with swift backlash. Smith and Carlos, whose mother grew up in Cuba, received suspensions from the U.S. team and death threats from angry spectators. The moThen ment changed their lives. Extending gloved hands skyward in racial protest, U.S. Carlos, for example, said a few years ago that the first 10 athletes Smith and Carlos stare downward during the years after the ’68 Olympics playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Summer “were hell” for him and that Olympic Games in Mexico City on Oct. 16, 1968. it affected his wife and kids as well. Now, more than 50 Carlos told USA years later, Carlos and Smith “It sends the message that wrong,” Today. “They’ve come to the maybe we had to go back will be inducted into the U.S. conclusion that, ‘Hey man, in time and make some Olympic and Paralympic we were wrong. “The Memo: What Women of Color Need to Know to Secure a Seat at the Table” by Minda Harts

c.2019, Seal $27.00 US $35.50 Canada 221 pages Your seat is down there, right at the end. You know, though, it’s not close enough to where you want to be. You need to be where decisions are made and careers are launched. No, your place at the table is close to the head and with The Memo by Minda Harts you’ll see how to get there.

Several years ago, a book circulated among businesswomen that advised them to “lean in,” speak up, and coalesce. Harts says she eagerly read the book but, once finished, she was confused. Like most women of color in business, she’d always “leaned in” because she had to. That book spurred her to come up with The Memo. “The Ugly Truth,” she says, is that few organizations teach women of color how to deal with mostly-white workplaces. It’s not just a matter of showing up and doing the work; you need to survive and build “your squad.” In business-speak, that’s networking, and it’s top of the list in importance. You may not feel like going to Happy Hour with coworkers who’ve irritated you all day but go anyhow. By joining in, even for a minute, you give people a chance to get to know you. You might find an office friend. For women of color, office politics are two-pronged: you must learn “respectability

Author Minda Harts politics” in addition to the other kind. Having a mentor will help; in the meantime, don’t burn bridges, don’t gossip, and watch your emotions at work. It sounds like just another platitude, but know your worth. Invest in yourself and stand out, then get the self-confidence you need to ask for what you want. Just remember, salary isn’t the only thing to request: more vacation, a company car,

and flex-time are all nice bargaining chips. Finally, if you’re white and reading this book, pay attention. Says Harts, “… women of color will be the majority of the workforce by… 2060; if I were a white woman, I would do better.” There is no denying the usefulness of this book, nor its truth. The Memo offers helpful words for those who are the lone women of

color at their workplaces. It teaches strength in the face of racism, on hair issues, self-confidence, and for anyone who needs to school coworkers while keeping her job. It gives young women of color a sisterhood, albeit one made of paper. And yet, there’s discord in this book that a deeper look exposes. At two particular points here, author Minda Harts chastises white women for making assumptions and “sweeping generalizations about ‘women’” without addressing any of the unique challenges that women of color face at work. This creates a paradox, since readers may notice overgeneralizations about white women that don’t allow room for those who are not clueless. That sets up further conundrums, to be sure. Overall, go into The Memo looking for help and you’ll absolutely find it, just as you’ll find that you’re not alone. Go in eyes-wide-open when you take on this book. And then, take a seat…

Eric Andre: Legalize Everything Tour Wednesday, October 30 7 p.m. Doors • 8 p.m. Show The Riverside Theater 116 W Wisconsin Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53203 Best known as the creator and host of Adult Swim’s hit late night talk show series The Eric Andre Show, Eric Andre continues to rattle the minds of TV censors, celebrity guests and viewers alike. With the help of his longtime friend and profoundly apathetic co-host Hannibal Buress, Andre brings his own flare to what is otherwise a very organized and predictable late night routine and puts his guests into situations they never thought they would end up in with his unrelenting and constantly over the top humor. Toro y Moi + special guest Channel Tres Thursday, October 31 7p.m. Doors • 8 p.m. Show Turner Hall Ballroom 1034 Vel R. Phillips Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53203 Toro y Moi (AKA Chaz Bear) was one of the first artists to be dubbed ‘chillwave’ due to the underwater, laid-back sounds of his 2009 single Blessa, but as each subsequent record and project he undertook headed off in an unpredictable direction, that tag was left in the dust. Whether digging into ‘80s R&B, house music, space age pop, prog or guitar-heavy power pop, Chaz never sticks to a formula when he could experiment. Even when tapping into the mainstream zeitgeist, his innate melodic gifts and sonic shapeshifting qualities always shine through. With heavy influences from Daft Punk, Caribbean funk and modern pop, Chaz’s latest album as Toro y Moi, Outer Peace, came out earlier this year.
