Bader Philanthropies honor legacy of Reuben and the late Mildred Harpole with new building dedication On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Bader Philanthropies, Inc., leaders and supporters gathered to celebrate the grand opening of its new Harambee neighborhood building at 3338 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive. The development, which houses a jazz café called Sam's Place, and Shalem Healing Inc., a health and wellness service, has been named the Harpole Building in honor of community advocates Reuben and the late Mildred Harpole (inset). The couple, known by many as the “Black Mayor and First Lady of Milwaukee," were advocates for the city’s youth and vulnerable residents, with Reuben working as an outreach specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Extension and later a program officer for the Helen Bader Foundation (now Bader Philanthropies). Mildred advocated for education and racial housing equal rights, and worked at Milwaukee Public Schools as a reading specialist and an administrator at Harambee Community School. She went on to serve as director at the Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity for the Milwaukee Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where she advocated on issues concerning fair housing and homelessness for several years before finally retiring in 2002. She passed in 2019.

What's Happening

My Mama’s love shaped all our lives By: Yvonne D. Greer Recently I joined my brother and sisters for a photo session with “My Mama,” Louise McKinnie, in celebration of our family’s longevity. We took pictures as a group and then each individually. As I looked at her, I realized that this one individual not only raised five of her own children as a single parent (mom and dad divorced when I was a young child), but also gave of her heart to many grandand great-grandchildren, several foster sisters, and adopted family-friends. I felt so blessed to have her in my life. I have always proclaimed her as “My Mama” even to my siblings as I’ve felt we had a personal and special bond that I acknowledge daily (but I’m sure all of my siblings feel the same way). So, just who is this phenomenal woman who goes by the name of Miss Louise? I put my writer’s hat on to interview her so she could enlighten us on her life’s journey as a successful mother, friend-mom, foster-mom, wife, bowler, lay historian, seamstress, baker, health care provider, and so much more. YG: So, could you tell us about your life and how you came to live in Milwaukee, WI? LM: I was born in Sandford, Florida. I had no sisters or brothers, but spent my early childhood, until 7-1/2 years, in Pelham, Georgia with my great-grandmother. And then, my mother brought me

family events as we share our reactions to difficult situations in our quest for peace, happiness, knowledge, understanding, and compassion. YG: What prompted you to become a foster parent?

Pictured above are Mother Louise McKinnie (seated center) with her children (from left) Linda Ponds, Stacy Stinson, Richard Allen, Sr., Yvonne Greer and Rita Cox. LM: First given that I was an only child, I really enjoyed the comradery I shared with each of my children and took advantage of every teachable moment. I maintained current sets of encyclopedias, the Highlights, and the National Geographic magazine subscriptions, discussing their content and meaning (I still get the National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines today). In addition, we viewed television documentaries together and I passed on family and cultural history by relaying events, both positive and negative, at every opportunity. At school, I attended recitals, PTA/PTO meetings, chaperoned field trips, and allowed all of my children to YG: With the acknowledge- explore their choice of musiment that all of your children cal instrument (i.e., the vioare accomplished in their lin, saxophone, piano, drums, chosen professions, what are flute, and harp). And now as your keys to raising success- adults, we continue to learn ful adults? from our travels together and to Milwaukee, WI and I spent my 8th birthday here with my grandmother, Tahirah Muhammad, and never left. I am now 86 years old. I will always be grateful to my grandmother for teaching me manners and the love of reading, newspapers, and books of all kinds, even cookbooks. She also taught me cooking, canning, baking bread, and cakes. I married young and had four children from this union. But after 7 years, this union ended in divorce. I was blessed to have one more child to complete my family unit. In 1976, I married George McKinnie and was happily married for 43 years until his passing in 2019.

LM: My first husband’s sister’s daughter was living in a group home but yearned to be with family. And, when she was asked who she would want to live with, she stated she wanted to live with Auntie Louise. So, I proceeded to obtain my foster care license and took her in. Over the years, I fostered 17 more children, several of which I still stay connected with, now parents of their own children. We get together as family at holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. YG: How did you manage raising children of various ages and homework, while also working two jobs? Yet still being able to send cakes to school for bake sales, bowling on leagues, and keeping everyone moving forward? LM: With determination, I worked the graveyard shift, 11 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., so that I could be there to send my kids off to school with a hearty breakfast before going to sleep. And I was there every day to prepare a home cooked meal for dinner and get homework done, before going to my second job three days a week and on weekends. Once the children were older, I was able to plan a little time for me and I became a top league bowler with a 180 average. YG: With so many personalities to nurture and having different ambitions, how were you able to guide us all to follow our dreams?

Your place to be

COLORFUL Explore what’s new, see admissions info, and plan your visit at mam.org.

LM: Each child was treated different, towards their own strengths. Getting to know each child as an individual is key. The basics to all was education. All were encouraged to follow their dreams and get a good education. All completed several degrees in their chosen professions. It’s important to set a good example. Although I was home schooled during the war years, I always had a zest

The Children of Louise McKinnie • Linda K. Ponds – Master Barber/Beautician, Bar Owner/ Mixologist, Professional School Bus Driver & Recruiter • Rita L. While working as a nurse’s aide, I took classes and became a Surgical Technician at St. Luke’s Hospital and was on the surgical team of the first heart transplant patient. YG: What words of wisdom would you like to share with others who are raising children today? LM: Turn off the phones and the TV and do some activity that includes reading!!! Learn the strengths of each child and help them develop into the best that they can be. Let your child talk to you and listen to what they have to say about their thoughts, hopes, and dreams. And see if there are any ways you can help them to excel. Let them know that you are for them, that you love them, and will help in any ways that you can.

Those schools include: • LaFollette • Metcalfe • Milwaukee School of Sign Language A news release said students, families, and staff at the three schools were notified about the transition to virtual learning. The decision

to move to virtual learning was made to decrease the likelihood of spreading COVID-19, due to the school community reporting that 3 percent or more of the total school population has tested positive for COVID-19 within a 14-day period.

Students and families can expect outreach from their child's teacher with instructions for virtual learning. Families should contact the school if they need technology assistance.

Five ways to elevate your life this fall

By Priscilla Q. Williams, RN I absolutely love the fall season! It’s that time of the year that you can expect that crisp cool air to blow across your face, and a time you can rock a pair of leather riding boots and a pretty scarf. Either way you look at it, I love the fall season…more than that I love what the fall season represents. The fall represents change and transition. This is the time to take mental, physical, and spiritual inventory. I want to share with you five ways to elevate your life this fall season, so you can live your absolute best. Embrace change Everything in life must change because nothing ever stays the same. Fall represents a time of transformation and transition. During this season you will notice the leaves fall, the wardrobe change, and the grass die. For you, this is the time to reflect, stay focus and find balance. During this transition time, find a new perspective on

where you currently are in life. Use this opportunity to embrace what worked well over this past year and what things you need to change. Change is a good thing and it will always bring about growth. Let go Just like the leaves die and fall off the trees, this is a time to let go of dead things in your life. Just as I stated earlier this is time to take spiritual, mental and physical inventory. It’s time to let go of everything and anything that no longer serves you or empowers you. This might mean letting go of relationships, jobs, unhealthy habits, or a negative mindset. If it is causing anger, strife or re-

that winter is near. For many, this is a time to prepare, and make sure things are in order. The winter season is a time in life when things go dormant.

This is often the season where people are depressed or down, however, if we prepare we don’t have to let the winter season overtake us.

Expect a harvest Autumn also represents harvest time. During this season farmers work on their fall harvest by collecting a reserve of crops. This is also a good representation of our spiritual lives. Expect a harvest from all the seeds you have been planting. All the hard work you have put in over the years is bound to reap a reward.

This is where you focus on spiritual alignment and working on things that will encourage your soul. This is a good time to meditate, speak affirmations over your life, stay in gratitude and surround yourself with positive people.

Preparing for the winter season means working on your spiritual being through prayer and meditation. Investing in your physical being with eating healthy and exercise. Lastly, be intentional about your mental state by creating balance, learning to say no and decreasing the stress in your life.

Silver lining found in pandemic: Fewer teens are vaping It turns out that the pandemic has reaped one unexpected benefit: As teens were kept home more often, their use of electronic cigarettes dropped by nearly 40 per-

cent, a new report finds. “They found a dramatic drop from last year, and it’s hard to imagine that doesn’t represent a real decrease in use among high school and

middle school students,” Dr. Nancy Rigotti of Harvard University tells the Associated Press. The survey found that 11 percent of high school stu-

dents and less than 3 percent of middle school students said they had recently used e-cigarettes and other vaping products. The year before, almost 20 percent of high school students and nearly 5 percent of middle schoolers had used e-cigarettes, the AP reports. Why the decline? There are a few reasons for the decline in teen vaping:

Drug Administration also banned most flavored e-cigarette cartridges, which were driving the popularity of vaping among teens. 3. Deaths and illnesses Some teens may have also reacted to the outbreak of vaping-related illnesses and deaths from vaping liquids that contained THC, the active chemical in marijuana, the AP notes.

1. Teens often vape socially U.S. health officials said these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, but the decrease in vaping in 2021 is probably real and makes sense because teens often vape socially, one expert told the AP.

However, since teens are now back at school, the use of e-cigarettes may rebound. “E-cigarette use among youth remains a serious public health concern,” CDC specialist Dr. Karen Hacker says in an FDA news release on the survey. “It’s critical we continue working together to 2. Gov. Evers unveils $75-million in grants to support equitable economic recovery and diverse business investment Governor’s investments toward diverse, equitable economic recovery now total $125-million On Tuesday, October 5, 2021, Gov. Tony Evers announced two new competitive grant programs totaling $75-million to support diverse business investment in communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The pandemic has underscored—and, in some cases, even exacerbated— disparities experienced by underserved communities, in particular for people of color in Wisconsin. Gov. Evers earlier this year announced $50-million in grants to community partners working to eliminate disparities and promote equity and inclusion, bringing the governor’s total investment into promoting diversity in the state’s economic recovery from COVID-19 to $125-million. The governor made the announcement today in Milwaukee’s Dominican Center alongside business leaders representing some of Wisconsin’s ethnic and diverse chambers of commerce. “We’re working every day to ensure our economy recovers from this pandemic, and part of that means making sure every family, every business, and every community can bounce back,” said Gov. Evers. “These grants will help make sure some of our hardest-hit communities

have a fighting chance to rebound and recover while ensuring our state can move forward and build a more prosperous, equitable future.” The $75-million investment announced today will be split into two programs: half will go to the Diverse Business Assistance Grant program, and half will go to the Diverse Business Investment Grant Program. The Diverse Business Assistance Grant program will provide $37.5-million to support chambers of commerce and other collaboratives that provide technical assistance and other services to businesses owned by members of communities disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic. These grants will encourage more business development by these community members and ensure adequate support for them as they navigate an economy so influenced by the state of the pandemic. The Diverse Business Investment Grant program will provide an additional $37.5-million to community development financial institutions (CDFIs) to provide grants to micro-businesses with 10 or fewer employees that are owned by members of communities disproportionately

impacted by the pandemic. These businesses have been both severely distressed by the economic effects of COVID-19 and have historically had difficulty accessing the credit and capital necessary to recover. “The Ethnic and Diverse Business Coalition is honored to stand with Governor Evers and his Administration to ensure that ethnic and diverse businesses in the state of Wisconsin receive the much needed technical assistance and financial supports that they need,” said Marjorie Rucker, chair of the Ethnic and Diverse Business Coalition. “Ethnic and diverse businesses are often lumped into the ‘small business category’ without fully understanding the unique issues

that they face. This award helps to balance the scale in favor of ensuring that these ethnic and diverse businesses get the attention that they need so that they can participate in the trajectory of true sustainability and growth in Wisconsin.” “Investing in the success of our small business communities has been a key strategy of the Evers Administration from the start,” said Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan. “We are committed to making sure that every community in Wisconsin has an equal chance to thrive.” In addition, Gov. Evers today also announced an open application period for the previously announced $50million Equitable Recovery

Grant program. The previously announced Equitable Recovery Grant program will provide a total of $50-million for community-based organizations working to increase equity and eliminate disparities. The program will have two tracks, with $25-million focused on organizations providing health, early childhood, and education services or programming, and $25million for organizations providing economic support, housing, and environmental justice services. Grants up to $1 million will be provided per eligible nonprofit organization, and applications will be accepted through Nov. 5, 2021. Grant program criteria for the Equitable Recovery Grant program, upcoming informational webinar, and Q&A submissions are available on the program website at https://doa.wi.gov/pages/EquitableRecovery.aspx. All three programs are funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act and will be administered by the Department of Administration (DOA). Applications for the Diverse Business Assistance Grant program and the CDFI Diverse Business Investment Grant program will become available in the next few weeks.

"Believing: Our Thirty-Year Journey to End Gender Violence" by Anita Hill

c.2021, Viking $30.00 / $40.00 Canada 352 pages The grab was savage. You yelped because you weren't expecting it. Because it shouldn't have happened. It was rough enough to leave marks on your skin, little round marks like fingertips;

for sure, it left marks on your self-confidence but complain, and it'll all be denied. You know the truth, though, and when you read "Believing" by Anita Hill, you'll know someone else does, too. Twenty-five percent of American women today "experience intimate partner violence..." Thirty-three percent say they've endured harassment at work. The rate's higher for women of color, highest in the LGBTQ community. Similar statistics were available in 1991 when Anita Hill testified before Congress about the harassment she'd said she'd experienced from then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, testimony that later contributed to Hill's becoming one of the country's leaders in the fight against sexual harassment and gender violence. Before the Thomas hearing, Hill says, courts routine-

ly dismissed most complaints about lewd comments, unwelcome advances, and unwanted touch from harassers. Some judges couldn't "understand" why a woman might be frightened by intimidation from a man; others believed the complaints to be overwrought. Such things were said to be "'not that bad'," says Hill, words she likens to a knife. Millennial and GenZers are believed to be intolerant of harassment and inequality, but Hill says they may still be affected by entrenched attitudes that haven't been completely erased. She had hoped that #MeToo might've changed things, but while the movement helped to open a major conversation about the issues, the frequency of sexual harassment and gender violence has not lessened. She points to misogyny from the last administration

and the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing as proof, as well as gun violence (often caused by bullying) and ongoing problems with harassment, homophobia, and gender inequality in many schools, from elementary school all the way through college. We can do better but, as Hill indicates, America has a long way to go.

violence and sexual harassment can be like a long game of Whack-a-Mole: once an incident is dealt with, another will pop up somewhere else, relentlessly, endlessly. Using the Thomas hearings as scaffolding here, she seems to show that while politics absolutely plays a part in the presence of harassment and gender violence in America, the prevalence can be found everywhere and costs us It's hard to nail down one more than just psychologisingle fix for issues of gen- cally. der violence from the pages of "Believing." Regents approve new partnership with Gateway Technical College, UW-Parkside, allowing students to earn two-year liberal arts degrees The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents at their meeting Friday, October 8, 2021, paved the way for Gateway Technical College to begin offering two, twoyear liberal arts degrees. The UW Board of Regents voted to allow Gateway to begin offering Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees for the first time. The degrees were made possible through a partnership between Gateway and UW-Parkside. Gateway, UW-Parkside, the Wisconsin Technical College System and Gateway’s accrediting agency, the Higher Learning Commission, have already signed off on the new degrees, allowing the college to begin offering them in fall 2022. “This is outstanding for our community and students,” said Gateway Technical College Executive Vice President/Provost Zina Haywood. “It provides yet another pathway to higher education.” Coursework in some categories required to complete the liberal arts associate degrees aren’t currently offered at Gateway -- such as physical education or humanities courses -- so students will need to take those at UWParkside. Even though students will take some courses through www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Haywood and Ducoffe both noted that Gateway and UW-Parkside have partnered in the past through 14 articulation agreements, but that liberal arts degrees are much different. The articulation agreements allow Gateway graduates transfer credits to specific UW-Parkside programs, while the liberal arts degree opens graduate options to continue in all programs.
