The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Intimate Partner Violence Month: Teen dating violence (Week 3) October is Intimate Partner Awareness Month (also known as Domestic Violence). This week this column will address a related topic: Teen Dating Violence. Dating violence is widespread with serious longterm and short-term effects. Many teens do not report it because they are afraid to tell friends and family. A 2018 National Survey by the Centers for Disease Control reported that U.S. High School students indicate high levels of teen dating violence, a risk factor for intimate partner violence in adulthood. Among students who reported dating, 9 percent of girls and 7 percent of boys had experienced physical dating violence and 11 percent of girls and 3 percent of boys had experienced sexual dating violence in the past 12 months before the survey. Victims of teen dating violence are more likely, according to the report, to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety. They

might also engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as using tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.* Youth must be taught the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships before they begin dating. Youth.gov compiled a list of traits that distinguishes between healthy and unhealthy relationships. Due to space limitations, three characteristics each are presented. See more at: http://youth.gov/ youth-topics/teen-dating-violence/characteristics#sthash.crnNq4qi.dpuf Healthy relationships Healthy relationships share certain characteristics that teens should be taught to expect. They include: • Mutual respect. Respect means that each person values who the other is and understands the other person’s boundaries. • Honesty. Honesty builds trust and strengthens the relationship. • Individuality. Neither partner should have to compromise who he/she is, and

his/her identity should not be based on a partner’s. Each should continue seeing his/ her friends and doing the things he/she loves. Each should be supportive of his/ her partner wanting to pursue new hobbies or make new friends. Unhealthy relationships Unhealthy relationships are marked by characteristics such as disrespect and control. It is important for youth to be able to recognize signs of unhealthy relationships before they escalate. Some characteristics of unhealthy relationships include: • Control. One dating partner makes all the decisions and tells the other what to do, what to wear, or who to spend time with. He or she is unreasonably jealous, and/or tries to isolate the

other partner from his or her friends and family. • Physical violence. One partner uses force to get his or her way (such as hitting, slapping, grabbing, or shoving). • Sexual Violence. One dating partner pressures or forces the other into sexual activity against his or her will or without consent. Beloved, it is extremely important to educate youth about the value of respect and the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships before they start to date. Youth may not be equipped with the necessary skills to develop and maintain healthy relationships, and may not know how to break up in an appropriate way when necessary. Maintaining open lines of communication with one’s teen may help them form healthy relationships and recognize the signs of unhealthy relationships, thus preventing dating violence before it starts.

family story can continue. Here’s a story from one of our foster parents: “During a visit between our foster son and his biological father at our home, the father told me that he felt lucky. I found it profound that someone would be feeling lucky when their child was in foster care. It was a very special moment where I was able to share how deeply I care for his son, and we could appreciate the roles we both are playing in his life.” People think their age and marital status are issues. Can single adults and single parents foster? Can middle-aged and older adults foster? Alissa: Yes and Yes! We hear from people who think they are too old to foster children in their home. We work with many empty-nesters who have already raised children. They make great foster parents. We have grandparents who are foster parents. We work with single people (both who don’t have children, and who are single parents), and they make great foster parents, too. We think that anyone can change the life of a child in foster care. Let’s talk about money. Do foster parents need to be wealthy? Do they need to have spotless homes? Jessica: No way. Kids need someone they can come home to at night. They need love and safety. All they will remember is how their foster parent changed their life, not that they had a big

One-third of children in need of foster care in Wisconsin are in Milwaukee. That’s more than 2,000 kids living in Milwaukee who need a home. It’s important to give children in foster care some sense of normalcy, and that includes the opportunity to stay in the neighborhoods they are growing up in, attend the same schools, and not have to move to other counties and make new friends. We need Milwaukee homes to support Milwaukee kids. So, what do Milwaukee kids need? Our Milwaukee Regional Director, Alissa Getzin, and Case Manager, Jessica Lorum, were interviewed about the Top 3 Foster Parenting Misconceptions: A lot of people assume that kids in foster care are looking to be adopted. Empty-nesters with grown kids aren’t always looking to adopt. Can they foster children for a short period? Alissa: Yes! While some foster parents adopt their foster children, most often, children in foster care need someone to provide support, stability, and love while biological parents make needed changes for safety and wellbeing. Jessica: When it is determined the biological home is ready for the kids, they return home. Foster parents see first-hand how they have changed a child’s life and supported birth parents, so their

Apply for FAFSA—get money for college! High school seniors should begin the process of applying for financial aid for college now. The first step is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application determines eligibility for grants and loans, and is used by colleges across the country to develop each student’s financial aid package. During October, MPS high schools are promoting FAFSA and ramping up support to help students fill out the application. Ascension Wisconsin celebrates the impact of community churches in promoting infant health By Karen Stokes On October 9, 2019, Ascension Wisconsin hosted the 9th annual Strong Baby informational luncheon at the St. Joseph Campus, 5000 W. Chambers St., Milwaukee. The luncheon celebrated 32 churches on becoming Strong Baby Sanctuaries, places where pregnant women and their families can learn about available community resources. Participation in church or community programs can reduce Milwaukee’s most preventable cause of infant deaths: premature births and unsafe sleeping environments. The event, co-sponsored by Ascension Wisconsin, was scheduled a few days prior to the Sunday, October 13, 2019, Strong Baby Sabbath. “The Ascension Strong Baby Sabbath Informational Luncheon provides Ascension, in collaboration with Mayor Tom Barrett and community health partners, the opportunity to engage the faith-based and community leaders in an informal environment to learn more about this issue. They also

Speakers, faith community leaders, government leaders, and healthcare experts joined together to promote healthy babies. (Photo by Karen Stokes) learn how they can support women, their families and promote healthy births,” said Penelope Stewart, Ascension community outreach coordinator. Dr. Joan Prince, Vice Chancellor, Global Inclusion and Engagement, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and emcee of the luncheon called upon the attendees, “You have a wonderful opportunity to take things back to your congregations, your families and your friends.

The work that was put into the summit is something that will definitely benefit the community.” Prince followed with sobering statistics that each year an average of 100 infants in Milwaukee die before their first birthday and Black infants are nearly three times more likely to die than white babies. The infant mortality rate is a crisis in Wisconsin. In 2018, of nearly 9,200 babies born in Milwaukee, 99 did not make it to their first

birthday. This is a complex problem related to poverty, race, and health disparities that will take a community-wide effort to address. Keynote Speaker, Dr. Karen Watson, Ascension Medical Group, brought attention to international statistics on infant mortality. “Worldwide 2.5 million babies die annually before their first birthday," she explained. “Seventy five percent of those babies will not see their first week. Ascension Senior Vice President Bernie Sherry expressed the importance of area churches partnering with Ascension. “When you think about

health and wellness and communities flourishing and you look at traditional healthcare services we know as a community, only 20 percent has an impact through clinical healthcare." The collaborative efforts between the city government, healthcare and the faith community are seeking to develop an effective outcome. “We are truly blessed to be parents and there’s nothing more wonderful,” Mayor Barrett said. “We have a problem in this city. Young women having babies need help. We’re here enlisting members of the faith community. There are literally thousands of people that you can reach that the health department can’t. We need the faith community to provide help to these young families.” “We are asking each pastor in the audience to support the Strong Baby Sabbath on Sunday, October 13, by alerting their congregations to the alarming statistics in Milwaukee and share information on how we as a community can help more children celebrate their first birthdays,” Stewart said. “Your purpose as a congregation, your purpose as an individual has had a profound impact,” said Sherry. “We cannot do it alone and are grateful.”

Worried about saving for college? Here are the key points to consider By Alexander Joyce As students head back to college, millions of parents are hoping their younger children someday can do the same. With the high costs of college continuing to rise and many students and families saddled with heavy debt, saving for college has become as important as ever. Many people started savings plans early, while others either could not afford to or procrastinated. The pros and cons of 529 plans. The 529 plan is an immensely popular college savings tool. Among the benefits are tax-deferred growth and tax-free withdrawals when savings are used for qualified education expenses. And as of 2019, individuals can contribute up to $15,000 per 529 plan, per child annually without triggering a gift tax. However, there are some disadvantages, such as limited investment options and a 10 percent tax penalty applied when money in the account is used for non-qualified education expenses. “The 529 has traditionally

For example, with some funds averaging 10-15 percent in the market the last 10 years, those who did exceptionally well took more market risk, exposing the principal to loss or gain. On the other hand, perhaps try a Roth IRA — it could double as a college savings account as well as a retirement account. There’s no 10 percent penalty when Roth IRA withdrawals are used for qualified higher education expenses, but ordinary income tax may apply to any earnings withdrawn before the age of 59½. “When drawing a conclusion on a plan of action, stick to it the best you can,” Joyce says. “Consistency wins the race.”

Whether digging into ‘80s R&B, house music, space age pop, prog or guitar-heavy power pop, Chaz never sticks to a formula when he could experiment.
