Milwaukee Environmental Sciences Academy hosts 'Scienceween'
On Friday, October 29, 2021, The Milwaukee Environmental Sciences Academy, 6600 West Melvina Street, hosted a "Scienceween." Special guest the "Amazing Science Guy," gave the students a chance to display their work. The event took place in the Science Exploratory Dome installed on the outside of the school's property. The goal of the Scienceween was to incorporate the amazing world of science and the fun of Halloween. It was an awesome fun learning experience and a chance to once again exhibit student scientific experiments and inventions. Featured experiments included engineering models, a balloon-powered car which exhibited the 3rd law of motion, and extraction of DNA from fruit. Pictured are students Igey Orgubani, Alexa Xayyaphiou, science teacher Anntette Davis, Kolin Chang and Austin Chang. MLKEDC dedicates statue to former Executive Director, Welford Sanders Members in the community came out to attend the dedication ceremony of the life size bronze statue honoring Mr. Welford Sanders, the former Executive Director of the Martin Luther King Economic Development Corp. (MLKEDC) on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at the Welford Sanders Historic Lofts and Enterprise Center. Among those in attendance were MLKEDC leaders, city officials, and the artist, Ms.Vinnie Bagwell (left) who created this magnificent piece. Also in attendance was Marquita Edwards (right), art/culture curator, referred to as Lady Renaissance of King Drive Arts and Culture, who said she was pleased to see the joyful exclamations and comments made by close friends and board members who saw the statue and the interesting story it tells. Edwards who recommended Bagwell to create the statue, had researched diligently for months, interviewing various sculptors throughout the country looking for the one whom she thought would embody the essence of Mr. Sanders. Edwards and Sanders co-founded the King Drive Commons Gallery and Studio and worked together for several years to help revitalize arts and culture, and health and wellness in the community. During the ceremony, Edwards stated, "Because of my close ties to Sanders, searching for the right sculptor was extremely dear to my heart. I understood the importance to have the statue of Welford Sanders, an African American man, whose dedication and vision made an enormous impact in this city, and to have his statue designed by the right renowned African American sculptor, would represent a major positive message for Milwaukee." Much appreciation goes out to MLKEDC board members, Bob Lemke, friends, colleagues, and all those who donated support for Mr. Sanders's statue.

October Awareness Month (Week 5)
#BlackPoetryDay (Part II) Last week, we encouraged everyone to celebrate #BlackPoetryDay during the month of October. Check out a book from the library or read to your children. Black poets include:
Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton, Jessie Redmon Fauset, Langston Hughes, Margaret Walker, Phillis Wheatley, W.E.B. DuBois and many many others, including rappers. These Black poets throughout the years have influenced millions with their work. Black Poetry Day is celebrated all over the world but especially in the U.S. In the second of our twopart series on #BlackPoetryDay let’s enjoy a poem from Maya Angelou. Angelou was not only an American poet, she was a storyteller, activist and autobiographer. She was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, MO and became famous as an editor, essayist and poet. Angelou was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton and in 2010 she was awarded by President Barack Obama the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S.

Vaccinations for kids will be in full swing by Nov. 8, White House says The U.S. government’s COVID-19 vaccination program for children ages 5-11 will be ready to roll on Nov. 8, 2021 the White House said Monday. On Friday, October 29, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved vaccines for the 28 million American children who fall into this age group, but the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still has to weigh in on Tuesday with its recommendations, the Washington Post reported. “On Friday, within minutes of FDA’s authorization, we began the process of moving 15 million doses from Pfizer’s freezers and facilities to distribution centers,” Jeff Zients, the White House coronavirus coordinator, said November 1 during a media briefing.
What you should know about vaccines in children Getting your child vaccinated can help protect them from COVID-19 and stop the spread to others. Here are a few tips from the CDC: Finding vaccines: • Check your local pharmacy’s website to see if vaccination walk-ins or appointments are available. • Check with your child’s healthcare provider about whether they offer COVID-19 vaccination. • Your child will need a • Contact your state or lo- second shot of the Pfizer-Bical health department for oNTech COVID-19 Vaccine more information. 3 weeks after their first shot. How they work: • COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. • COVID-19 vaccines have been used under the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history, which includes studies in adolescents.
• Children and adolescents receive the same dosage of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine as adults. There are no patient weight requirements for COVID-19 vaccination, and COVID-19 vaccine dosage does not vary by
Prepping for your child’s vaccination: • Get tips for how to support your child before, during, and after the visit. • Talk to your child before the visit about what to expect. • Tell the doctor or nurse about any allergies your child may have. • Comfort your child during the appointment. • To prevent fainting and injuries related to fainting, your child should be seated or lying down during vaccipatient weight. nation and for 15 minutes • Your child can’t get after the vaccine is given. • After your child’s COVID-19 from any COVID-19 vaccination, you COVID-19 vaccine, includwill be asked to stay for 15– ing the Pfizer-BioNTech 30 minutes so your child can vaccine. be observed in case they have • Your child may get a a severe allergic reaction and COVID-19 vaccine and oth- need immediate treatment. er vaccines at the same visit or without waiting 14 days between vaccines.
Several million doses will begin arriving at doctors’ offices and pharmacies over the next few days for what he called a “critical milestone” in U.S. vaccination efforts. “The bottom line is we’ve been planning and preparing for this moment,” Zients said. A CDC advisory committee met Tuesday to discuss vaccinating children ages 5-11 and suggest guidelines to the agency. The CDC will then release its final recommendations, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said. What about Moderna? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has delayed a decision on whether to approve emergency use of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine in 12- to 17-year-olds until at least January 2022, the company announced Sunday, October 31, 2021 because the agency told the company on Friday that it needs more time to assess emerging international data on whether the vaccine increases the risk of a rare heart side effect called myocarditis, Moderna said in a statement. On Sunday, the company also said it will delay seeking FDA authorization of its vaccine for children ages 6-11. To date, about 80 percent of adults have received at least their first shot, and 70 percent are completely vaccinated. Nearly 2 million people have received their booster shots since becoming eligible.

Four 2021 holiday shopping predictions — and what they mean for your wallet Amazon deflated the buildup to Black Friday last year when it rescheduled Prime Day from July to October as the virus raged through the summer. The rest of the retail pack had to adjust by scrambling to announce their own early sales. The result was that the new unofficial launch of the Christmas shopping season is now two weeks before Halloween.
With Halloween in the books and Thanksgiving just ahead on the horizon, those who haven’t yet started strategizing for the holidays might feel like they’re already behind. They shouldn’t panic just yet — but they should get moving. 2021 is shaping up to be at least as chaotic as 2020, and things are just getting started. Inflation, product shortages, shipping delays and an overall feeling of unease in society in general are dialing up the anxiety in what is already the most stressful time of the year for many. But worry not. The holidays will be no less doable this year than last, as long as you know what to expect. Here’s what the experts are predicting.
“Consumers must order earlier than usual as the ongoing supply-chain issues are putting increased pressure on the already tight holiday shipping deadlines,” said Tim Parkin, president of Parkin Consulting.
Sellers are well aware of this narrative, and they’re lengthening the timelines of their biggest seasonal sales to soothe anxious customers Black Friday will be the who want to get their shopmidpoint — not the start ping done early. — of the holiday shopping season “Retailers know that conOne of the main storylines sumers are frightened of the to emerge as the 2021 holi- images on TV of cargo ship day shopping season unfolds backups at clogged ports and is an almost universal con- they are taking full advantage sensus that shipping will be by pushing their Black Friday slow, delays will be the norm sales earlier than ever,” said and in-demand products will Melissa Cid of MySavings. be unavailable. com. “Black Friday will be a
full-month event where the early bird gets the worm. Expect more deals this year earlier than ever as retailers react to the distribution and shipping delays.” Black Friday will be chopped up into lots of little Black Fridays Cid is correct in saying that retailers are starting early this year to pacify customer concerns about delays and shortages, but that’s only part of the reason that Christmas shopping now starts around the time the pumpkins come out.
By the day after Thanksgiving, all the big retailers will have already hosted several big sales, which dilutes the impact of what was always the biggest shopping day of the year.
“Black Friday is starting the first week of November for retailers like Walmart and Target and I expect many more to jump on the early bandwagon,” Cid said. “This year there will be new weekly and daily Black Friday sales to get people shopping earlier in November. Black Friday is no longer an after-ThanksBlack Friday is no longer giving event and consumers the event that it was pre-pan- will benefit with more sales demic — Jeff Bezos saw to than we have ever seen in previous years.” that.
Among the events leading up to what was the big day are: Amazon: Epic Deal Days, which run now through the holidays. Best Buy: The tech giant already hosted a major sale on Oct. 19, and is now gearing up for another one the week before Black Friday starting on Nov. 19. Target: Holiday Best, which is a monthlong sale leading up to Black Friday with special deal categories that change every week. Walmart: There are three special sale events, one on Nov. 3, one on Nov. 10 and one to be announced just before Black Friday. Shoppers will enjoy more safeguards Just as retailers are pushing back sales to alleviate their customers’ concerns, they’re also doubling down by beefing up the store policies that keep shoppers reaching for their wallets.
