On Saturday, November 6, 2021, the Milwaukee Branch of the Urban League (MUL) hosted their "36th Annual Black and White Ball," at the Wisconsin Center, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave. The Black and White Ball is one of Wisconsin's premier social events of the year and once again the MUL was able to hold the event in person, having had to host it virtually last year due to the pandemic. This year the program was sponsored by Rockwell Automation and the hosts were MUL President and CEO Dr. Eve M. Hall(lower right photo, center); U.S. Bank Dis-
trict Manager and MUL Board Chairman John A. Saloemi (lower right photo, left) Brewers Community Foundation Executive Director Cecelia Gore (lower left photo, right); and Rockwell Automation Chairman and CEO Black D. Moret. During the event Johnson Controls Global Service General Counsel Neuman Leverett (lower right photo, right) presented a donation of more than $1.9 million to the Urban League. The event also featured a performance from 80's R&B star Howard Hewett (lower center photo).

The Esquires formed in 1957 and was originally made up of siblings Gilbert, Alvis and Betty Moorer. Though the original members have passed, the children of the original members still perform under the name The Esquires II. They accepted the award on behalf of their fathers and performed several songs including the Esquires #3 hit "Get On Up." www.milwaukeetimesnews.com

Our Community By Congresswoman Gwen Moore
One year out, we have lots of work to do
and bridges; but it includes funding to make high-speed internet available to everyone, replacing toxic lead pipes, and makes monumental steps to address climate change. We are in unprecedented times. With every piece of legislation advanced by President Biden and the Congress, we are trying to fix four years of destruction from the Trump Administration’s reckless agenda during an international pandemic and a national crisis.
We showed the nation and the world our power when Democrats turned out in historic numbers and put Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the White House. But the real fight for the soul of our nation is already underway as we head into 2022. With only 12 months to go, we need to get to work. We can’t afford to hit the snooze button. The warning sirens are loud and clear: Virginia’s devastating election results for Democrats could become the fate of the nation if we don’t act now. Our Democratic majority is hanging in the balance, and Trump’s GOP is making headway. Trump’s sheep are projecting flipping 60 Democratic House seats red next November! And while ZERO Republicans voted to pass the American Rescue Plan, you better believe they’re all taking credit for it in their districts.
Congresswoman Gwen Moore

Democrats must continue delivering for the people of Wisconsin and families from sea to shining sea by sending the Build Back Better agenda to President Biden’s desk. What’s included in this transformative, once-in-a-generation legislation are the very things that we Democrats campaigned on – the very reason why voters chose to put Joe Biden in the White House and gave Democrats the majority in both the House and Senate.

Honoring our veterans and military personnel (Part I) Veterans Day November 11, 2021 On November 11, 2021 our nation will honor the men and women who have served and are serving our country. How did Veterans Day come about? The U.S. Library of Congress indicates: The Allied powers signed a ceasefire agreement with Germany at Compiegne, France, at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918 bringing the war now known as World War I to a close. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations." Originally, the celebration included parades and public meetings following a two-minute suspension of business at 11:00 a.m. 1 In 1938, a Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday: "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as Armistice Day." In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, AL, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day. Weeks led the first national celebration parade in 1947 in Alabama and annually until his death in 1985. President Reagan honored Weeks at the White House with the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 as the driving force for the national holiday. Elizabeth Dole, who prepared the briefing for President Reagan, determined Weeks as the "Father of Veterans Day." U.S. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, KS, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law May 26, 1954. Congress amended this act on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it has been known as Veterans Day since. An HTGroup, LLC Publication

MPS celebrates School Psychology Week November 8–12, 2021 National School Psychology Week is being celebrated November 8–12, 2021. Promoted by the National Association of School Psychologists since 2002, this annual observance celebrates the work of school psychologists in supporting student wellness, achievement, and personal growth. MPS currently employs about 163 school psychologists, all of whom have a master’s degree or doctoral degree and are certified in school psychology. School psychologists have a wide range of roles and responsibilities as special education evaluation team members, violence prevention specialists, building-based psychologists, crisis team members,

Courage in dementia caregiving A perspective from a former caregiver

the parent anymore and caregivers need to take control and push the envelope. You must make decisions and become an advocate for your loved one.
Navigating the caregiving journey November is National Family Caregiver’s Month. A caregiver’s burden is great, especially for those caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. I know first-hand the challenges of caregiving. In 2000 I moved from the Twin Cities to Milwaukee to care for my mother, who was living with dementia. My journey with my mom was short. It was just 3 years before she lost her battle. While it was difficult, I will always cherish that time. Recognize the signs There is huge stigma attached to dementia and many families don’t want to acknowledge it. Dementia is not a normal part of aging and it will not go away with time. Caregivers need to be prepared for the progression of the disease and the impact it will have on their lives. Early diagnosis isn’t easy, especially for adult children caring for their parents or grandparents. My mom went

The Alzheimer’s Association offers free information and resources for caregivers, including care consultations, education programs, support groups and 24/7 Helpline support at 800.272.3900. Many tools, tips and online education can also be found at alz.org.
Importance of self-care When I moved to Milwaukee, I left a successful 20year real estate career to become a full-time caregiver. It was very overwhelming and I had to learn so many things. I was what you’d call a “sandwich generation” caregiver, as I was also caring for my 3-year-old son at the time. I learned quickly that I could not deplete myself. Day 1: Just diagnosed with Crohn’s disease For a long time, it was thought that Blacks didn’t have Crohn’s disease as often as other ethnicities. However, recent studies show that this is not the case. Unfortunately, Black people were being misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. Since that’s changing, more people are discovering that they can have this form of inflammatory bowel disease and live well. Once you know what you’re dealing with, there are a few key changes you’ll need to make to your life to handle Crohn’s disease well.

You should watch out for complications Apart from the symptoms that come from Crohn’s, the constant inflammation can cause complications that will affect your overall health. These complications include ulcers, fissures, arthritis, colon cancer, skin disease, and liver damage. It’s a good idea to ask your doctor what symptoms to look out for and let them know as soon as you see anything that’s a cause for concern. While your loved ones wait patiently for the main course to be served, hearty appetizers like bread bowls can keep appetites at bay. This SpinachHam Dip is the perfect combination of comforting and satisfying when served with bread cubes, crackers or tortilla chips for a warming snack ahead of the big meal. To find more seasonal appetizer inspiration, visit Culinary.net.
Spinach-Ham Dip
2 cups ricotta cheese 1 cup sour cream 1 package (10 ounces) frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry 1/4 pound ham, cubed
3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 2 green onions, thinly sliced 1 round bread loaf (16 ounces), unsliced Heat oven to 350 F. In medium bowl, blend ricotta cheese and sour cream until smooth. Add spinach, ham, Parmesan cheese and green onions; mix until blended. Cut 12inch diameter circle out of top of bread loaf. Reserve top. Remove bread inside loaf, leaving about 1 inch along sides. Pour cheese mixture into bread bowl. Replace top. Cover bread loaf in aluminum foil and bake 60 minutes, or until warmed through. Serve Up a Seasonal Treat
No seasonal gathering is complete without dessert, and quality baking during the holidays results in fresh favorites like Apple Pie.
