North Central Service Club 2019 Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon On Sunday, November 10, 2019, the North Central Service Club, Inc. (NCSC) hosted their Annual Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Four Points by Sheraton Milwaukee North, 8900 North Kildeer Court. The luncheon featured a silent auction and a fashion show, which showcased fashions provided by Gg Collections Boutique, 5201 West North Ave. and AJ Ugent Furs, 8333 W. Capitol Dr. The North Central Service Club was founded by Marlene Narcisse Johnson and Mildred Harpole (inset), who recognized the need for African American women to become involved in community service within the central city; and to provide a reservoir of leadership to effect positive change. The organization aims to develop civic, educational, social, and cultural programs which can improve the quality of life for central city women. Co-founder and local community leader Mildred Harpole unfortunately passed away a few weeks prior to the event, which was one of Mildred's favorites. The NCSC honored her with flowers at her seat and offered a somber moment of prayer. Pictured (from left) are a MPS middle school student, NCSC member Bonnie Edwards; NCSC member Joyce Mitchell-Belin; Mildred's daughter Annette Harpole; Mildred's husband Reuben Harpole; NCSC member Monica Dickerson; mistress of ceremonies Gloria Miller; NCSC President Pamela Malone; NCSC member Rhulene Artis; and NCSC member Linda Bryant.

Being Frank
By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times
Thanks and more thanks It is November, which means that Turkey Day is upon us. Thanksgiving is here in the USA. The celebration of the Pilgrims surviving and thriving in America is one of the USA’s most celebrated holidays. Families will get together and embrace each other while adding a few thousand calories
to their waistlines. It is time for everyone to be thankful and here are a few things people should be on their knees thanking the heavens for.
people screaming, “He has lost his mind to be saying be thankful for Trump.” This may be true but no other president has freed the USA like Trump has. No other president has brought One of the main things out the festering hate that citizens of the USA should has always been a part of be thankful for is President US society's conscience like Donald Trump. I can hear Trump has. Trump has al-

lowed closet racists and bigots to come out and express themselves without backlash. Trump has created an atmosphere where you know what is coming, and by knowing this, you can act accordingly. The allowance of certain people to finally express their hidden racism and bigotry is a blessing because it lets people be themselves and allows others to know whom they are dealing with. US citizens should be just as thankful for the role assimilation has played in making everyone the same. The original goal of many civil rights protests was to get equality for everyone. Well, assimilation took it a step further and made everyone the same. Every race in the USA basically looks and acts the same. The females all wear long straight hair and some form of workout leggings. The men wear jeans or some form of sports gear and a baseball cap. Music has become so bland that you don’t know what race the entertainer performing comes from. There is no discerning rhythm or beat, just sounds coming from a computer

Citizens of the US should eat some turkey in celebration of social media offerings like Facebook and Instagram. These platforms protect people from the burden of living their own lives. With these wonderful distractions people can always look at their phone or computer and nose into other people’s lives. These platforms allow people to share important information, such as what their dinner plate looks like, with the world. Platforms like the previously mentioned ensure people do not have to be alone or not have a plentiful source of misery to consume. Social media ensures that people are always focused on what others are doing, which means they are absolved of living for themselves. The relief of the burden of creating your own experiences is worth eating a pumpkin pie or two. Other things US citizens should be thankful for are the educational system which produces programmed unthinking drones. The various law enforcement agencies that keep certain factions in line with tough yet caring hands…the fact that no one is anyone in the USA is a celebration in itself. Yes, good people, enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. Eat, drink and be merry and make sure to post your Thanksgiving meal on social media. Frank James IV © 2019 beingfrankwithfrank@ gmail.com

Maintaining a thankful heart in the midst of trying times (Week 3) “My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord, let every creature praise His holy name for ever and ever.” - Psalm 145:21 Even in the difficult times, give God thanks! I realize someone may be reading this and saying within themselves, ‘come on Reverend -- how can I thank God for what I’m going through?’ I am simply saying, like the psalmist, to take time and reflect over your life and on God’s goodness and mercy and praise God’s holy name! Maybe you don’t feel like giving God praises and thanks because your life currently seems like it’s upside down, but I am still encouraging you in spite of your circumstances, in spite of your pain, trials and problems, to reflect on the faithfulness of God. Even in your hard place, I want you to count your blessings and literally name them one by one. I am not suggesting that telling God “thank you” will
lessen the pain of a crisis. As humans, we hurt. I know it’s easy when things are going well to be thankful; but when we are going through a crisis and we are struggling, offering the sacrifice of thankfulness sometimes does not come so easy. Yet, even with tears streaming down your face, I encourage you to give thanks to God. Having a thankful heart is necessary, but it is also a choice. I am asking that you choose, in the good times and the bad times, to be thankful. I admit, having that type of perspective in difficult and trying times is hard, but it is my prayer that you will see the value of it and make it worth pursuing. God never puts more on us than we can bear. In the Old Testament, we find no one who went through it like Job. You can say Job had it all, but in the blink of an eye, Job lost just about ev-
erything – his livestock, his servants, his sons and daughters, his health; and even his wife looked at him despairingly and suggested he curse God and die. But Job did not lose his faith. Job responded by falling to the ground and worshipping God! (Job 1:1322, 2:1-10.) While Job was discouraged, Job never lost faith in God. In the end, God rewarded Job for his faithfulness. Like Job, we don’t know why we have to suffer, but God has a Purpose in it and God will bless those who endure. Beloved, I make it a practice, that whatever I “feed,” I “eat.” In other words, I don’t write, teach or preach anything I will not or have not
taken a large dose of myself. Oftentimes, my articles end up ministering to me. And, I can humbly and honestly say, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without the trying and difficult times I have had to endure. As I reflect back over my life, I didn’t see what God was doing then, but now I realize how God carried me through my valley experiences and how everything I went through was all in God’s Plan. I admit, the situations made me cry, but they didn’t kill me. The trying times, the rejections and disappointments, instead collectively attributed to my growth in godly wisdom, perseverance and faith. May I encourage you to take a moment, think about the most challenging time in your life that you have experienced and how God intercepted and brought you through it. Whatever you are going
through right now, know that God is able is bring you through this, too. So, even in the difficult times, give God thanks! I am Because He Is,

MPS partners to increase healthy food options for students Serving breakfast and lunch to nearly 76,000 students every school day is a big task, and selecting healthy foods that children enjoy can be a challenge, but this work is about to get a little easier. Through a partnership with the Life Time Foundation, the Milwaukee Public Schools Department of Nutrition Services will evaluate foods and look for substitutions to eliminate certain additives and processed ingredients that may have health consequences. The partnership was announced on November 7 at Manitoba School, with district leaders and the Life Time Foundation pledging to improve health and the ability to learn for Milwaukee’s children. “Many of our families depend upon school meals to feed their children,” said Dr. Keith P. Posley, superintendent. “We owe it to our young learners to remove ingredients that can interfere with good health or brain function. Better health can lead to better success in

To learn more about the “Harmful 7” food categories, visit the Life Time Foundation website at https://www.ltfoundation.org. school.” The Life Time Foundation is a Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization that is helping 310,000 students at 544 schools across the country. The Foundation’s registered dietician will team
up with MPS to review food labels and recommend changes, with the goal of eliminating the “Harmful 7” ingredients: trans fats and hydrogenated oils; high-fructose corn syrup; hormones and antibiotics; processed
and artificial sweeteners; artificial colors and flavors; artificial preservatives; and bleached flour. The district has already eliminated two of these categories from foods offered to students, and is grateful to have support to

Little White Lie (USA, 2014, 65 min.)
Talkback with director Lacey Schwartz UWM Union Cinema • 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.
Little White Lie tells Lacey Schwartz’s story of growing up in a middle-class Jewish household, with loving parents and a strong Jewish identity — until she discovers that her biological father is actually a black man with whom her mother had an affair. What defines our identity, our family of origin, or the family that raises us? How do we come to terms with the sins and mistakes of our parents? Little White Lie is a personal documentary about the legacy of family secrets, denial, and redemption.
Both events are free and open to the public, thanks to generous support from Bader Philanthropies for the Stahl Center’s “Colors of Jewishness” series.

Foster care Q&A with Foundations Health & Wholeness
We asked, they answered! Foundations Health & Wholeness interviewed several of our licensed foster parents in the Greater Milwaukee Area to help shed some light on commonly asked questions/thoughts regarding foster care. Please read this, and know we value your questions and will always provide honest answers to help you make the best choice for your family regarding foster care. A huge thank you to our foster parents who participated! Why did you become a foster parent? -“Because at a very important time in my life, I found out that I was not able to have kids. I thought that helping kids would be a great idea.” -“I chose to become a foster parent because I wanted to make a small difference to a huge problem and provide children with a healthy, happy, and wholesome experience." -“ I became a foster parent because I know there are so many kids that need a stable, safe home to be in while they are waiting to be reunited with their birth families. I am 100 percent invested in getting children back with their families if at all possible, but want to provide them the best care in the meantime while they stay with me.” Why did you choose Foundations Health & Wholeness? -“I was on my way to work one day and saw a sign out in someone’s yard. I thought it was a divine intervention.” -“I randomly chose Foundations because I saw an advertisement posted in the community.” -“I chose Foundations based upon several references of friends that I had go through the organization and heard such great things. I was further convinced when looking into the program because I felt I would receive more personal attention from the case managers.” Is being licensed a difficult process? -“Not at all.” -“In my opinion the licensing process is more so a tedious rather than difficult process.” -“It is not a difficult process, but it does involve being organized and committed to completed tasks. Foundations has been more than patient with me and is more than willing to let me go at my own pace.” -“Becoming licensed isn’t so much difficult. It just requires patience, sacrifice, and consistency with a lot of dedicated time.” Have you ever fostered
before this? Or was this your first time? -“This is my first time fostering.” This foster parent has been licensed with Foundations Health & Wholeness for 3 years. -“I have never fostered before, this is my first experience.” This is a foster parent that has been licensed with Foundations Health & Wholeness for 4 years. -“I have never fostered before.” This is a foster parent who was licensed this year with Foundations Health & Wholeness. Tell me about the support Foundations Health & Wholeness provides to you. -“One of the things I like about Foundations is the support. I can call my case worker at any time with any questions or concerns. She works through things with me, provides a different point of view but overall I make the final decision. That is important to me. I don’t believe I have had to face anything without Foundation staff/ family being present.” -“Foundations provides me with a better overall understanding of the fostering system, different coping tools and skills, access to a team of professionals, necessary respites, etc.” -“Foundations staff members are available via text message or phone call pretty much any time. They are supportive of your decisions and are there when you need to talk through your decision making process. Foundations understood that I wasn’t ready to do respite care in the beginning of my journey and respected that decision and I really appreciated that.” -“Foundations always has a worker to talk to for advice through email, text, or phone call.” What is the most rewarding part of being a foster parent? -“I think for me, it’s seeing the results of my actions in their decision making, and who they are becoming. Whether it be positive or negative, I see myself in the kids I have in my home. Even when I do respite, whether the weekend, a week or a month. It’s nice to see how kids follow my structure of my home even if I am overly protective and always involved in everything they do.” -“The most rewarding part of being a foster parent to me is providing hope to what initially appeared to be a

hopeless situation by changing a frown into a smile.” -“I think the most rewarding thing is to provide a loving, safe, nurturing environment to kids who need it the most. I hope that it also works out that I have valuable relationships with birth parents.” -“The most rewarding part of being a foster parents is knowing we are making a difference in a child's life who deserves to be loved and nurtured.” What is the toughest part of being a foster parent? -“For me, this was being “present” and supportive of the time period when children show their true colors and they address their own insecurities and trauma. There is no amount of training that can prepare you for the emotional, mental or physical discomfort you experience as a foster parent. You learn to love these kids through their pain even when it causes pain for yourself. You learn to love selflessly and you are forced to deal with your own triggers and trauma.” -“The toughest part of being a foster parent to me is to correctly and effectively function within the framework of the system while being bound by the politics, red tape and bureaucracy.” -“The toughest part for me is just being a parent for the first time ever. I sometimes
don’t know what I am doing - but then people that have been parents to kids since they were born remind me that they feel the same way.” Tell us a “yay” moment you and your foster child had recently or in your most recent placement. -“I would have to say this occurred this week at parent teacher conferences. Both of my girls are doing GREAT in school. I was so proud of them. When I heard about their behavior and how they carry themselves in school, I honestly couldn’t believe they were talking about my foster youth. Just to hear how focused they have been and how kind hearted they are, and how they are a pleasure to have in class and be around. I see my lectures of treating people with respect, how important education is, and always being the best version of yourself has actually helped or plays a part in their decision making of how they represent themselves! I LOVE IT. I’m so proud of my kids.” -“I’m proud to announce that I’ve had several “yay” moments with the children that I’ve fostered; but one most recently that comes to mind is the vast progress that one of the youth in my home has made in her development.” -“Our foster child received “Honor Roll” for her first semester during her first year of high school.” What would you like potential foster parents to know? -“I’d like potential foster parents to know that a little loving effort makes a huge difference.”
-“I would want them to reach out to as many people as possible that have gone through the process to just hear stories and find out what it is like. I would also want them to know that it is going to be hard and emotional but that there is a tremendous level of support at Foundations.” -“We want foster parents to know that it’s always sunshine after the rain.” Do you think it’s important for more African Americans in the Milwaukee area (or in general) to become foster parents and why? -“I believe it’s important in general because it’s important for those cultural norms to be passed on. It’s important for black kids to be placed with other people that look like them. I believe the expectations of how they speak, wear their clothes, walk, and express themselves can be hindered if they’re not. I just think that children deserve to be placed with families that look like them. It actually may help them adjust and flourish.” -“I most definitely think that it’s not only important, but rather “critical” that more African Americans in the Greater Milwaukee area and throughout the country become involved as foster parents as there’s an overwhelming need and a need for children to identify culturally.” -“I think it is important for kids in foster care to have people taking care of them that look like them. In Milwaukee, there are many African American children in foster care so it would be (Continued on pg. 17)

“The Pretty One: On Life, Pop Culture, Disability, and Other Reasons to Fall in Love with Me” by Keah Brown
It’s what’s inside that counts. There’s a sentiment you’ve heard since you were a small child: don’t judge someone by their outward appearances. Look at their mind, see their heart, know who they are before you decide how you’ll act. As in the new book The Pretty One by Keah Brown, look past what they can’t do, and see what they can. Keah Brown is cute. Check it: #DisabledAndCute. It wasn’t always that way: for much of her life, she’s “felt average, plain and wrong” and sometimes embarrassed but today, she loves her body despite her cerebral palsy. And why not? She can’t escape it, nor does she want to; in fact, she says her “disability is not a thing to see past but instead a thing to acknowledge and accept...” You don’t even have to pretend to be PC with Brown; euphemisms, she believes, are for the discomforted able-bodied, not for those with a disability. You can, however, apologize for the way people like
she was treated the same as they were; she was a kid who just needed to take breaks, that’s all, no big deal. Well into grade-school before she realized that she had a disability, she still remembers the boy who made fun of her, who cruelly pointed out her CP.
c.2019, Atria $17.00 / $23.00 Canada 243 pages
She wonders if he remembers what he did that day, because she surely does.
her are treated when they’re minding their own business, living their lives. Strangers, for example, often approach Brown with unsolicited cures for her CP, but she’d rather we all use our energy to help ensure Black people with disabilities aren’t “invisible.” Even better: make sure that nobody who’s Black is invisible. Period.
She talks candidly about her disability, no beating around the bush or hinting at anything, and facts are slapped on the table like a palm. There’s a dash of humor inside some of her chapters, and solid rants elsewhere. On the other hand, readers will find some weird, weird things in this book, including a chapter in which Brown gives human names to furniture; and extended references to some pretty off-thebeaten-path pop culture. Neither these, nor frequent repetition will endear readers to this book.
In this book, Brown writes with sorrow about the Author Keah Brown years she wasted Photo by: Katelyn Shufelt Photography being jealous of And yet, the overher able-bodied all narrative is quite someone else “will follow eye-opening, sister, and with gratefulness ly especially for that they’re close now. She suit.” able-bodied readers No doubt, The Pretty One is squirm in the presencewho tells of the simple “freedom” a quirky of kind of memoir. that comes with figuring out a wheelchair or a disabilihow to style her own hair, Brown admits that she When laying things out ty. and she wonders when she plainly, doesn’t speak for everybody, there aren’t many but The Pretty might find romance. If she Brown grew up with a can love herself, then sure- people more straightforward say inside. One has a lot to brother and a twin sister and than author Keah Brown.

(Continued from pg. 14)
Do you think it’s important for more African Americans in the Milwaukee area (or in general) to become foster parents? Why? "Yes, I believe that it is important for more African Americans in the Milwaukee area to become foster parents. However, in addition to African Americans, I believe every race capable of caring, loving, nurturing, sharing, etc. should also be of interest when it comes to caring for the little people of the world. Why? I believe this because of the need to care for the traumatized children of the world."
wonderful for there to be more African American foster parents so that they have positive cultural role models that are of the same ethnicity as them. However, I also firmly believe that people of other races can take amazing care of African American children.” -“We think it’s very important for more African Americans to become foster parents because Southeastern Wisconsin has the majority of children in foster care which are African Americans.” What do you want potential foster parents to know? "I want all potential foster parents to be aware that fostering children can be quite rewarding. Unfortunately, this is not something which is instantaneous. I believe that being a foster parent is truly a blessing because you are given the opportunity to share your blessings with others. However, at times children can be so badly traumatized that they can cause harm to themselves and/or

Eight winter safety tips to protect seniors from injury
Cold winter weather can take its toll on our homes, cars, and bodies. Frozen pipes, dead car batteries, and bodily injuries, are common and often require us to seek help from a professional. As we age, cold weather can be extremely dangerous. Plummeting temperatures can lead to icy sidewalks, hypothermia and other serious injuries. If you have elderly neighbors, friends, or relatives, check in with them this winter and share these winter safety tips. 1. Dress in layers. Older adults can lose body heat quickly and be unaware that a change in body temperature is occurring, making them susceptible to hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when our body temperature gets below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Consequently, serious health problems can occur, such as a heart attack, kidney problems, or death. Selecting the right number of layers is important. Dressing in multiple layers will help keep them warm and reduce heat loss. 2. Keep the furnace running. Experts recommend keeping the indoor temperature around 68 degrees Fahrenheit at a minimum. While many elderly people live on a budget, it’s important to keep their homes warm. Consider helping with some small home projects to keep heating bills down. Such projects may include closing vents, putting plastic on windows, or placing rolled towels or blankets in front of doors to reduce drafts. 3. Space heaters can be dangerous. During the winter months, home fires increase due to the use of alternative heat sources. People 65 and older are three times more likely to die or be injured in a home fire. In addition, if they’re using a fireplace to heat their home, make sure they have a large screen to prevent sparks from landing on their flooring. Lastly, make sure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each
floor of their home. 4. Prevent broken hips. Broken hips are a common injury for the elderly, but can lead to other health complications. To prevent injuries,

With family members it is a good idea to sit with them once a month and go through their monthly bills and expenses so they do not fall behind on any important bill or needs like heat and electric or medical needs. 8. Discuss severe weather. When the deep freeze is about to settle in or a blizzard is going to strike, make sure they understand. Let them know when the weather event will occur and how long it will last.
