During the past 100 years, Mary Elizabeth Johnson Smith has been an eye witness to some significant historical events. Born in rural Mississippi in 1921, she lost her mother at age two and the grandmother who raised her at age 12. Shortly after World War II, she and her husband moved to heavily segregated Milwaukee where they tried to build a life and family together before the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act or the Fair Housing Laws passed during the 1960s. But when you ask Mary about these events, she brushes aside any questions about hardship with a wave of her hand. “As time went on, things got better,” was the most controversial comment she made during her interview.

It’s not that she has forgotten the struggle of raising nine children. It’s just that Mary is naturally a cheerful person, according to her granddaughter, Kennedy Smith. “When I was growing up she was always fond of saying: ‘Don’t let anyone steal your joy’,” Kennedy said. “She is always calm. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her upset. She firmly believes that God will always find a way.” Mary was married for 58 years to Hyman Smith until his death in 2003. She celebrated her 100th birthday with her children and some 40 grandchildren on September 24, 2021. She was so excited and having such a good time that she did not go to bed until 3:00 a.m. that day.

Remembering the life of Reginald Dwight Linyear Reginald D. Linyear was born on August 27, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Jesse and Ruth Linyear. Reginald graduated from Xavier Prep High School (New Orleans) in 1961. His education continued with advanced studies at Louisiana State University (New Orleans), Southern University of New Orleans, an Associate Degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Straight Business School (New Orleans) and concluded with earning a Bachelor of Science in Community Education from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in 1975. Reginald was a devoted Catholic, baptized at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Orleans. After arriving in Milwaukee, he joined St. Boniface Church and was a faithful member of St. Martin de Porres at the time of his passing. Commissioned as a Lay Minister in 1986 under the guidance of Rev. Dennis Lewis (St. Boniface Church), he served tirelessly throughout the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in several roles, including church trustee, parish council, and the finance committee. Reginald shared his faith through service as a Eucharistic Minister, Stations of the

Cross prayer leader, call to worship and, hospitality minister. His skills in facility and logistics management were a great asset, along with his knowledge of engineering. Reginald was a very talented photographer, capturing many memorable moments of the Church and the community. Reginald rarely left home without his camera. Reginald was united in holy matrimony to the late Minnie Linyear on December 21, 1968, in Milwaukee, to this union two children were born. Reginald began his professional career in New Orleans within the Federal Government for the I.R.S. He subsequently moved into the private sector, holding various positions with Chevron Oil Company. He was then recruited for JC Penny’s Milwaukee Sales Manager Training Program – however after completing the program he decided to forgo a career in sales to spend more time with his family on weekends. Eventually, he became the chief employment officer for the Inner City Development Project – Malcolm X Center. His career came full circle when he returned to the Federal Government as a part of the Equal Employment Opportunity

Commission where he served as a federal investigator for 30 years. Reginald fought tirelessly to enforce civil rights laws against workplace discrimination before retiring in 2006. Reginald engaged in many activities in his leisure time. He enjoyed building and flying remote control airplanes, collecting model trains, and spending time at the library. He was physically active throughout his life; he enjoyed bicycle riding, bowling, swimming, and roller skating at Butler Skateland. Reginald enjoyed almost anything related to automobiles and do-ityourself projects. He was a master of many subjects and found joy in sharing his expertise with anyone who needed assistance. A fan of football, Reginald also enjoyed cheering for

the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. He was also a proud and active member of the Xavier Prep Class of 61’ alumni club. The family was central to Reginald and he especially enjoyed bonding during long road trips – often using the C.B. radio to find the shortest and safest route. He enjoyed teaching his grandson Brenden about all the things he knew and loved. Reginald not only gave time to his family, church and shared his NOLA second line expertise at the annual Knights of Peter Claver Mardi Gras ball - he also took pride in being a caretaker for over 45 years to a former coworker. Reginald was an often sought-after guest speaker sharing his principles, wisdom, and reflections on Fatherhood in the community. In 2018 he was recognized as a “R.E.A.L (Respectable, Earnest, Aware, Loving) Man” during the annual Father’s Day program sponsored by the Rosary Plus Group of St. Martin de Porres. Reginald and his late wife Minnie were consummate travelers. Places visited included the Mediterranean, the Holy Land, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Japan, New Zealand, Uruguay, and Egypt. Their

U.S. tours included Alaska, Hawaii, and a Western Tour covering the U.S. National Parks – capturing photos and sharing stories inspiring others to travel. Reginald departed this world on Saturday, November 6, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Minnie, parents Jesse and Ruth Linyear, and his brother Kevin Linyear. He leaves to cherish his memory: children, Derron Linyear, Miami, FL; Deatrice Linyear-Davis (Ronnie), Snellville, GA; beloved grandson, Brenden Davis, of Snellville, GA; brother, Keith Linyear Sr. of New Orleans, LA; brother-in-law, Reverend Ernest Davis Jr. (Ret.), Albany, GA; nephews, Keith Linyear Jr. of New Orleans, LA, and Lawrence (Arnica) Linyear of New Orleans, LA; and a host of cousins.

Honoring our veterans and military personnel (Part 2) Veteran’s Day November 11, 2021 Many of our veterans have returned home from war with scars, injuries and are having a very difficult time. The price for freedom costs. The greatest thing we can do this Veterans Day and the upcoming holiday season is to not serve ourselves, but volunteer our services or donate on behalf of these brave soldiers who have served our country willingly and sacrificially. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs lists several Veterans Service Organizations at the Milwaukee Regional Office. Organizations accept donations and offer volunteer services. See Milwaukee Regional Services website for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at: https://www.benefits. va.gov/Milwaukee/veterans-services-orgs.asp. Three organizations are listed below:

Substitute teachers needed across the district Do you love working with children? Would you like to support student success in classrooms? Join MPS school teams by working as a substitute teacher! Subs are needed across the district for all age levels and will earn $200 per day. Substitute teachers have flexible hours and get to choose the days and locations they wish to work by selecting from a published list of openings. Subs can work a few days per week or can work a full week. Shortterm subs can also vary their hours from week to week. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree. In addition, applicants need: • Short-Term Substitute Li-

cense OR • Wisconsin Teacher License OR • Substitute teacher training from a program approved by

the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction such as the STEDI program. STEDI costs $40 and requires 8 hours of study. DPI requires

a passing score of 85 percent on coursework. All MPS employees must go through a background check plus a physical exam and drug screening. Candidates could start in as little as two weeks after applying. As of November 1, 2021, all MPS employees are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. The health and safety of our staff and students is our number one priority. All offers of employment are contingent on the candidate showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (currently one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna

vaccine) to pass the pre-employment requirements. Individuals with medical issues or sincerely held religious beliefs that prevent them from getting the vaccine may request an accommodation from the vaccine requirement. MPS has a number of current openings for licensed teachers and substitutes. Join our team and help Milwaukee students learn and succeed! Visit the MPS Careers page at https://mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us/en/Employment/Employment-Opportunities-at-MPS/ Substitute-Teaching.htm and click on Substitute Teaching to learn more and apply.

November is “National Diabetes Awareness Month” Protect your vision for tomorrow. Learn the facts. Today.

Is someone you know at risk for diabetic vision loss? By Cheryl L. Dejewski

practice that has served the vision care needs of more than 185,000 Wisconsinites since 1985. To help our readers protect their vision, their team answers the following questions.

With diabetes at epidemic levels, you probably know (or are) one of the 34.2 million Americans with the disease. Whether or not the cause is due to lifestyle (poor diet, lack of exercise), genetics or both, be aware: Diabetes does more than affect blood sugar levels. Without proper precautions, it can lead to nerve damage; limb amputation; heart and kidney disease, and sight loss. Blindness is the complication diabetics fear the most. And, if you are black, you have up to a three times greater risk of losing vision to diabetes than a white person.

How does diabetes steal vision? “With diabetes, fluctuating and high blood sugar levels can cause the blood vessels that nourish the retina in the back of the eye to become weak or abnormal. This disease of the retina or ‘retinopathy’ leads to leakage and bleeding that can blur vision and permanently impair sight.” reports Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmol-

“We encourage members of the black community to challenge the statistics by educating themselves about the importance of early detection and treatment,” says Mark Freedman, MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, a leading ophthalmology

ogy at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and a partner at Eye Care Specialists, an ophthalmology practice that specializes in the care of diabetic patients. “With the increasing prevalence of diabetes, What are the symptoms? “Usually, there are no early diabetic retinopathy is now symptoms, and most people the leading cause of blinddon't notice a problem with

Is retinopathy the only vision risk? “In addition to causing retinal damage, diabetes greatly increases the risk of other eye concerns. It doubles the likelihood of developing cataracts, a clouding of the lens inside the eye that blurs vision and requires surgical removal and implantation with a lens implant to repair. Diabetics are also twice as likely to develop glaucoma, a condition in which increased fluid pressure in the eye causes damage to the optic nerve that leads to permanent loss of side (and eventually all) vision,” says Freedman.

loss is correspondingly higher. That’s why we can’t stress enough the sight-saving benefits of annual eye exams.” What treatment is available? “When treatment is necessary, we have been very pleased with the success of medications (such as Avastin, Eylea and Lucentis) that can be painlessly injected into the eye to decrease blood vessel leakage and inhibit abnormal new growth—thus staving off progression of diabetic eye disease. We evaluate each patient’s response individually to determine if and when (about every 4-12 weeks) they should receive injections. As a result, we have seen amazing results, including not only stabilization of vision, but in some cases, improvement in sight,” reports ophthalmologist Michael Raciti, MD, a local leader in the fight against diabetic eye disease.

Also, call your doctor immediately if you notice vision changes in one or both eyes (not associated with blood sugar fluctuations), numerous floating spots (like spider webs), or a veil over your vision,” says David Scheidt, OD, a medical optometrist and consultant for the Wisconsin Diabetes Advisory Group’s original guidelines. IT’S NOT SO EASY TO HIDE. You think no one can see it. But if you have a gambling problem, you can bet it’s more obvious than you think. It’s affecting your relationships, your finances, your work – the only one you’re fooling is yourself. But there is a way out. And you don’t have to go it alone. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, we can help. Call 800-GAMBLE-5 (800-426-2535), text 850-888-HOPE, or visit wi-problemgamblers.org. A message brought to you by the Wisconsin Lottery.
