Five-year-old drumming prodigy lands full band scholarship to Alcorn State, 13 years before his high school graduation Nicole Jackson, 40 and a mother of three, is taking out loans to help put her 21-yearold daughter through college. But she won't have to do that for her 5-year-old. Jeremiah Travis started beating on ABC blocks as a baby and has been "beating on stuff" ever since, his mother said to the Mississippi Clarion Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network. Now, the talented snare drummer has been offered a full band scholarship to Alcorn State University in Mississippi. When Travis graduates from high school in 2032, he has the opportunity — if he chooses — to play in the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Band. "Now, to know that he is 5 and has a full scholarship made me feel so good. I am just amazed at his playing level with him being so young," Jackson said.

Travis is a snare drummer at St. Helena College and Career Academy in Greensburg, LA. From the dance moves to the cadences, the kindergartner has dazzled crowds with his performances in halftime and sideline shows, including New Orleans Pelicans basketball games. 5-year-old drummer 'always working on his skills' At the age of 5, most kids are playing with toys, video games or watching PAW Patrol on television. "My child only plays a video game for no longer than 15 minutes and then he wants to beat on something," Jackson said. "He's not a video game person. He likes to move and learn different things with drums." Each day, Travis is surrounded by beginner band members and drummers who are 10 years older than him and more than twice his size.

But, Chesteron Frye — the band director at St. Helena College and Career Academy and former student band director at Alcorn State University — said it is Travis' work ethic that makes him who he is. "He's 5 years old but he's always working on his skills," Frye said. "Any free time in the band room or when we go on break, he's drumming on the floor, getting other drummers to come and just asking

them 'can we play, can we play'." 'When it is time for battle, play time is over' Brandon Dorsey, the percussion instructor at the school and a 2017 graduate of Alcorn, said Travis constantly wants to learn. "I don't force him to do things because he is 5 years old," Dorsey said. "Sometimes, I have to revamp myself and remember that he is so young. What he has, it is a God's gift." When the percussion section prepares to battle an opposing drumline, Travis is in his element. "He is just zoned in," Dorsey said. "Sometimes, I don't teach him a part because I think he might not be able to play it. Next thing you know, we start playing a cadence, he just starts playing it and I'm amazed. When it is time for battle, play time is over. He is really about business." He loves 'Drumline,'

learning moves from cousin When a normal school day ends — if Travis is not watching Drumline, his mother says — he's looking for his cousin, Kenya Brooks, a member of the St. Helena College and Career Academy's percussion section. "Kenya was the person who brought Jeremiah to the band room when I first got hired as the band director here," Frye said. "All they do is drum together during and after practice. They have like the big brother-little brother relationship." Kenya is responsible for teaching Travis all of the dance moves and parts to cadences. "When he graduates, whichever college he attends — hopefully he attends Alcorn State — he has a bright future," Dorsey said.

The first African American mayor in the history of Montgomery takes office Alabama's capital city, a hub of the civil rights movement decades ago, recently inaugurated its first African American mayor. Steven Reed was sworn in as Mayor of Montgomery in a ceremony Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Montgomery Performing Arts Center. Reed, a Montgomery County probate judge, won an October runoff to replace Mayor Todd Strange, who did not run for reelection after holding office since 2009. It's a historic moment for the 200-year-old city, which has a complicated racial history. A site of important civil rights events, it also was the first capital of the Confeder-

as well as the destination of the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery protest marches that were met with brutal police violence and led to the Voting Rights Act. The nation's first memorial for more than 4,000 victims of lynchings opened there last year. About 60 percent of the city's residents are Black.

Reed, born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama's second-largest city, told CNN after his victory last month that while a number of factors delayed the city's election of a Black mayor, it's now time to move forward. "We've been unified on the message of opportunity and creating an environment where people can live, learn and earn," Reed said.

In Reed's first 100 days in office, he wants to focus on public education and restoring trust between the police and the community, two issues he ran on, he told CNN. "We want to let everyone know that this is a new Montgomery," Reed said. "This is a new day, and we're going to be a great part and a great asset to this country."

Maintaining a thankful heart in the midst of trying times (Week 4) This month, in recognition of the National Day of Thanksgiving, we have been encouraging our readers to have a thankful heart regardless of their circumstances. This series has been dedicated to two dear friends, identified only as “S & D” who are both dealing with a health crisis involving their husbands. In the conclusion of this series, I want to encourage you in the midst of trying, difficult times, to serve others with a thankful and grateful heart. My fellow church member, who helped to inspire this series, did just that. In the midst of her trying time, she served me by taking the time to call and say “I just want to hear your voice.” What she did not know is her voice message deeply touched my heart and brought a smile to my face. Never disdain the small things, the little acts of service, because God chooses such to accomplish great things. No act of service is small if it is done to the glory of God. COMMUNITY COLUMN UWM coach emphasizes how small details build to big results By Pat Baldwin Men’s basketball coach University of WisconsinMilwaukee We have big goals as a basketball team, but you don’t reach those big goals without first knocking off the little goals, one at a time, day in and day out. The same holds true for any business, organization or group – give yourselves permission to dream big, but leave no stone unturned along the way. For our young men at UW-Milwaukee, it starts with daily habits. We preach to our players to be “everyday” guys, which means approaching every task, every drill, every class with consistent focus and effort. If you’re impatient or unfocused, you forget about the fundamentals of a drill or a skill you need to be successful. If you’re detailed, you go back to being that everyday person.

UWM men’s basketball coach Pat Baldwin wants his Panthers to be “everyday” players. Because our season starts in October and ends – hopefully – in March, I’m constantly talking about being patient and not being bored by the process. It’s going to get lonely at times. We’re a few games into the season. The road ahead is a long one and there will be bumps and adversity along the way. How you respond goes back to

your core character. That’s what you do on a daily basis. Although we have big goals, it’s counterproductive to look any further ahead than our next game. “Stacking successes” has become sort of a buzz phrase in athletics. What it really means is knocking off those little goals, one at a time. We talked to our guys at

the end of last season about understanding the grind from April to October, because there is no offseason in Division 1 college basketball. Whether a player gains 5 or 10 pounds on the bench press in the weight room or increases his vertical jump by a couple inches, those should be celebrated as victories. Those small victories are important, because without them, the bigger victories are that much more difficult to achieve. We’re going to lose some games along the way – we already lost a tough one in triple overtime to Western Michigan – but even in defeat, and sometimes especially in defeat, there are lessons to be learned and mistakes to be corrected. Those aren’t victories in the traditional sense, but you can’t grow as a player or as a person without confronting uncomfortable truths head-on and learning from them. Another concern we have

as coaches, and one we share with leaders in any team environment, is distractions. Even champions have distractions. The teams that allow the fewest distractions to get in the way of their goals are probably going to be the teams that win. We want to try to minimize anything toxic that can erode the quest to win or be productive. When I played at Northwestern, our coach, Ricky Byrdsong, used to ask us how we thrived in chaos. It’s a part of everyday life. Chaos can be Twitter. It can be trying to balance the demands on your time. It can be the sound of people congratulating you on a one-game performance. I feel good about our “everyday” guys and where we’re headed. I’m confident our players will attack the small goals, celebrate their victories, learn from their mistakes and build to something special.

THANK Family engagement is critical to the success of students. When parents understand what their children are learning and how to reinforce lessons at home, students are more likely to thrive and achieve. To support family involvement, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has created a number of resources including grade-level Parent Guides to reading, writing, and math; A Parent’s Guide to Assessment; and MPS Reads monthly reading lists. “Parents have a lot to navigate these days in trying to keep up with their children’s lessons,” said Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley. “These resources will help families monitor progress and know what questions to ask of teachers. Parents tell us they appreciate being able to talk to their children about their school work and also understanding when to seek extra help.”

Grade-by-grade Parent Guides provide a detailed look at what students are learning in reading, writing, and mathematics at each grade level. Tips are included to help support children’s learning at home. Understanding Your Child’s Assessments is designed to help families understand the types of tests used in MPS and how they are used to improve student achievement. The guide includes ways to communicate with your child’s teacher about assessments and how families can support their student during assessment time. MPS Reads is an exciting resource to help students and families select age-appropriate books. New lists are published monthly and include multicultural titles and current topics that youth are concerned about.

Focus on Health

Brought to you by:

Affordable healthcare open enrollment ends soon The Affordable Healthcare Act (or Obamacare as it is more commonly known) open enrollment 2020 began on Friday, November 1, 2019 for the roughly 11 million Americans who have health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, and for those thinking of joining them and signing up for individual or family coverage for next year. There’s no longer a federal penalty for going uninsured — the government lowered the penalty to $0 for 2019 and beyond, effectively eliminating the individual man-

date, as the requirement to buy coverage was called. But Washington, DC and a handful of states including California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts —

Get Insured Affordable health insurance is available for you Sign up for health insurance by visiting HealthCare.gov between Friday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 15. Compare healthcare plans and prices so you can make a healthy choice today. Find out if you qualify for savings on health coverage by providing your household size and zip code. You could be eligible for lower-cost or free coverage. Learn about a tax credit that can immediately help pay your premiums for health coverage.

have established their own mandates, and their residents must buy coverage or pay a penalty unless they qualify for a limited number of exemptions.

Even if you’re not required to have insurance, it’s a good idea to get covered if you can afford it. Going uninsured leaves you vulnerable to catastrophic costs if you get a serious diagnosis or have a bad accident. Here’s what you need to know: When is Obamacare open enrollment for 2020? Open enrollment runs from Nov. 1 through Dec. 15 for coverage starting Jan. 1, 2020. During this window, current customers can switch their health insurance plan for next year, while new customers can buy a policy from scratch. A handful of states have extended their deadlines beyond Dec. 15, although you may still need to enroll by that date for your coverage to start on Jan. 1. If existing customers do nothing, they’ll be automatically re-enrolled in their current plan for next year. If prospective customers do nothing, they’ll be shut out of the market for 2020 coverage unless they have a baby, move, lose job-based coverage, or experience another life event that would qualify them for a special enrollment period. Where is the Health Insurance Marketplace?

Most states use the federal marketplace at healthcare.gov, and you can buy your policy directly on that site. Around twelve states and Washington, DC operate their own state-based exchanges, but you can still get to them from healthcare. gov: enter your zip code and the site will provide a link to your state’s health insurance marketplace. Healthcare.gov isn’t the only place you can enroll in a major medical plan — you can buy one through a broker as well. But beware: outside web sites may also sell plans that are not comprehensive health insurance, such as cancer-only policies and short-term plans that are cheaper but come with a host of exclusions. These plans have been aggressively marketed, confusing some consumers into thinking that they’re more comprehensive than they are. Brokers can provide useful help in comparing your options, but before buying through one, make sure you can find the exact same plan on healthcare.gov, says Karen Pollitz, senior fellow at the Kaiser Family Foundation. Visit the foundation’s comprehensive FAQ page on open enrollment at https://www. kff.org/health-reform/faq/ health-insurance-marketplace-aca. No matter where you buy, “It’s really important to have a healthcare.gov account,” Pollitz notes. Come tax time next year, it will be handy for you to have all your records in one place. Plus, if the marketplace needs to contact you, it’s good to have your information on record.

2050

Want to discuss recent trends in transportation and land development? Commission staff have initiated a federally required four-year Review and Update of VISION 2050, the regional land use and transportation plan for the seven-county Southeastern Wisconsin Region. We invite you to attend a public informational meeting to review plan implementation to date, trends in transportation system performance, and how well year 2050 plan forecasts are tracking. Input is welcome in this first round of public outreach before we prepare a draft plan update for public review and input in early 2020. The following public meeting will be held in Milwaukee County.

The meeting will be held in an open house format, so you can attend any time during the two-hour timeframe. Snacks and refreshments will also be provided.

Can’t attend a public meeting? You can review and comment on initial work for the Review and Update of VISION 2050 online: www.vision2050sewis.org. Written comments may also be provided via U.S. mail, email, or fax through December 20, 2019: Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission P.O. Box 1607 | Waukesha, WI 53187-1607 Email: vision2050@sewrpc.org | Fax: 262-547-1103 Meeting locations are wheelchair-accessible. People needing disability-related accommodations are asked to contact the SEWRPC office at (262) 547-6721 a minimum of three business days before the meeting so that appropriate arrangements can be made regarding access or mobility, review or interpretation of materials, active participation, or submission of comments.
