Milwaukee's downtown lights up for the holidays Milwaukee’s downtown was illuminated with more than 500,000 lights and dozens of animated displays during the 23rd annual Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival presented by Johnson Financial Group, Nov. 18, 2021 – Jan. 1, 2022. The celebration kicked off on Thursday, November 18, 2021, with a holiday broadcast on WISN-TV 12, which featured a sampling of downtown’s holiday shows and an all-new finale to signal the start of the holiday season in Milwaukee. The annual display of lights, coordinated by Milwaukee Downtown BID #21, transforms three downtown parks into winter wonderland scenes – “Community Spirit Park” at Cathedral Square Park, “HiBEARnation Station” at Pere Marquette Park and “Home Is Where the Hearth Is Powered by We Energies” at Zeidler Union Square – as well as illuminates three downtown thoroughfares. There is a self-guided tour available through the iHeartRadio app or wherever podcasts are hosted by searching “MKE Jingle Bus Tour.”

Kyle Rittenhouse: Protesters clash with police as anger and division grows over teenager acquitted after killing two people Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty of all charges over the August 2020 shootings in Kenosha, WI. President Joe Biden, who during last year's election campaign tweeted a video that appeared to link Rittenhouse to white supremacists, said he supported the jury's decision and urged Americans to react with calm. "While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, myself included, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken," he said. Former president Donald Trump, who at the time of the killings said it appeared Rittenhouse had been "very violently attacked", congratulated the 18-year-old on the verdict, adding "if that's not self-defense, nothing is!" Anger continued to swell across the country, with the protest of about 200 people in Portland, OR, declared a riot after the outbreaks of violence. Demonstrators blocked streets and others talked about burning down the Justice Center, according to

KOIN-TV. The police tweeted: "A crowd has gathered near SE 2nd Avenue and SE Madison Street and participants have begun breaking windows and damaging doors of city facilities in the area. People are throwing objects at police officers in the area." Portland was the scene of ongoing, often violent protests after the murder of George Floyd last year by a police officer in Minneapolis. Some activists said police were heavy-handed in their response. Peaceful protests also took place in other US cities, including New York. Responding to a verdict

that has reignited the debate over guns, vigilantism and racial injustice in the US, Amnesty International said it was likely to lead to more violence. "The painful reality is that our country's criminal justice system - and our society - is predicated on white supremacy and anti-Black racism," Paul O'Brien, the organization's US executive director, said. "The state and federal government have a duty to protect people and their right to protest and peacefully assemble. "Allowing private individuals, in this case a teenager, to arm themselves and take

to the streets with no accountability for their actions will only serve to embolden vigilantism and act as a force multiplier for future violent clashes. "We must continue to demand action to end gun violence and protect people's right to protest, the right to live and the right to be free from discrimination." Rittenhouse was acquitted on two counts of homicide, one count of attempted homicide, and two counts of recklessly endangering safety in the protests marred by arson and rioting. The teenager, the two men he killed and the man he wounded were all white, but the case has been linked throughout to issues of race and the criminal justice system. Activists have previously pointed to differences in how police handled his case and that of Jacob Blake, the black man who was shot by a white Kenosha police officer in August 2020. Video footage played during the trial showed Rittenhouse running towards

police still wearing his rifle, and continuing past the police line at officers' direction. He turned himself in to police in Antioch, IL, early the following day. And though Kenosha prosecutors filed serious charges that had the potential to result in a life sentence for Rittenhouse, the trial also struck many activists as unusually deferential to the defendant. "You can really smell and see the underlying systemic racism that's in the judicial system and the policing system," said Justin Blake, Jacob Blake's uncle, following the verdict. Black activists in Kenosha said the verdict showed they need to continue pushing for change in their city and state. "You cannot tell me that these institutions are not sick," said Kyle Johnson, an organizer with Black Leaders Organizing Communities. "You cannot tell me that these institutions are not tainted with racism."

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Things to give thanks for Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, families around the USA will gather for Thanksgiving. There will be celebrating and plenty of good eating. Even though things seem bleak in the USA because of the pandemic, there is plenty to celebrate. People of the USA take the Thanksgiving break to celebrate the things that are good about life in 2021. COVID-19 has taken a toll in every country on the planet. The USA is no exception to this fact. COVID-19 rates are spiking around the country. As a result of this many states are re-instating curfews and cutting down business hours. Yet, even with these possible measures being imposed there are still reasons to be thankful. Family is one. Many people take the things that are really important for granted and family is one of these things. Your family situation may be convoluted at the best of times. If your family is alive and kicking in these pandemic

If a strained muscle is all that's wrong with you, then some Ben Gay will take care of that. Enjoy your health because there are plenty of people in the world wishing their only health concern was a tight thigh muscle.

laden times, you are blessed. Think of the people who will not be able to have a slice of turkey with loved ones this year. It is easy to assume family will always be there but if anything has been learned in 2020-21, it is the fact to not assume anything. If you can, reach out to family both close and estranged. You don’t have to invite the estranged faction to dinner, just let them know you are alive and checking to see if they are also. When the priest is doing a eulogy it

is too late to miss someone at that point. Health is another thing many people take for granted. In 2021 no one on the planet should be taking health for granted. If you are close to feeling okay then celebrate. With the pandemic and police killing people, if you are breathing, rejoice. This is true for young and older people. Many people complain about minor aches and pains but in 2021 everyone was shown what real health issues are. Shake off

may not like the hamburger or tuna you are eating but remember there are those in the USA who think Ramen noodles are a delicacy.

Citizens of the USA, these are a few of the little things you can be thankful for. Others are jobs, relationships, etc. Take the time this holiday season to embrace and enjoy the small things that Food on the table is an- you may have overlooked in other thing people can be the past. Five MPS schools unveil new schoolyards Students at five MPS schools now have access to outdoor classrooms, new activities, and natural areas to relax and learn. In October, new school yards were unveiled and celebrated at Academy of Accelerated Learning, Allen-Field Elementary, Bay View Montessori, La Escuela Fratney, and North Division High School. Beginning in 2018, MPS and partners embarked on an ambitious plan to develop many school yards across the city through the Greener Healthier Schools Program. Green spaces for children to play and relax, along with outdoor classrooms for learning, are priorities of the work. Trees, native plantings, and shrubs help improve air quality and moderate temperatures around schools. Fencing, benches, murals, decking, and recreation spaces such as four-square, tennis courts, and tracks, make the areas safe and appealing for students.

Holiday traditions are important for families and children. There are several ways to enjoy holiday traditions and protect your health. Because many generations tend to gather to celebrate holidays, the best way to minimize COVID-19 risk and keep your family and friends safer is to get vaccinated if you’re eligible. Here are safer ways to celebrate the holidays: Generally: • Protect those not yet eligible for vaccination such as young children by getting yourself and other eligible people around them vaccinated. • Wear well-fitting masks over your nose and mouth if you are in public indoor settings if you are not fully vaccinated. - Even those who are fully

or have a close contact with someone who has COVID-19. If you are considering traveling for a holiday or event, visit Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Travel page to help you decide what is best for you and your family. CDC still recommends delaying travel until you are fully vaccinated. • If you are not fully vacci-

nated and must travel, follow CDC’s domestic travel or international travel recommendations for unvaccinated people. • If you will be traveling in a group or family with unvaccinated people, choose safer travel options. • Everyone, even people who are fully vaccinated, is required to wear a mask on public transportation and follow international travel recommendations. Special considerations: • People who have a condition or are taking medications that weaken their immune system may not be fully protected even if they are fully vaccinated and have received an additional dose. • They should continue to take all precautions recommended for unvaccinated people, including wearing a well-fitted mask, until

advised otherwise by their healthcare provider. • You might choose to wear a mask regardless of the level of transmission if a member of your household has a weakened immune system, is at increased risk for severe disease, or is unvaccinated. • If you are gathering with a group of people from multiple households and potentially from different parts of the country, you could consider additional precautions (e.g., avoiding crowded indoor spaces before travel, taking a test) in advance of gathering to further reduce risk. • Do NOT put a mask on children younger than 2 years old. By working together, we can enjoy safer holidays, travel, and protect our own health as well as the health of our family and friends.

Are these 5 health conditions in your family tree? due to heart disease, you are more at risk for heart disease. Knowing your family’s health history is an important factor in your health status. Some health conditions are more likely to be passed from generation to generation. Your family tree can shed light on your risks for these 5 conditions:

be diagnosed with diabetes, making healthy food choices and staying active may prevent the disease from developing. 3. Cancer According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), having a family member who was diagnosed with breast, ovarian, uterine, or colorectal

cancer increases your risk for these cancers. Having two or more relatives, on your mother’s or father’s side, with any of these cancers increases your risk even more. Environmental and lifestyle factors like smoking and exposure to radiation can increase your risk for cancer as well. 4. Sickle Cell Anemia Sickle cell anemia is a genetic mutation of the body’s red blood cells. It is purely a hereditary disease. According to the CDC, 1 in every 365 Blacks are diagnosed with sickle cell disease. The sickle cell trait is carried in 1 out of every 13 Blacks. Many who carry the trait are not aware until they

give birth to a baby that has sickle cell disease. Knowing your health history and your partner’s health history can help you in making important decisions about family planning. 5. Obesity Obesity is a risk factor for other conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Research has shown that there may be only a small hereditary component in obesity. However, obesity does tend to show up in families. If your parents were obese, it’s likely that they impacted your food and lifestyle choices. Acknowledgment of a family history of obesity can help you break the cycle of unhealthy life choices.
