On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, The AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) announced it is changing its name to Vivent Health. The new name will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. Following recent mergers with Rocky Mountain CARES in Denver, Colorado and St. Louis Effort for AIDS in Missouri, Vivent Health is expanding across the country to ensure people living with and at risk for HIV have access to critical prevention, health care, medication and social services to thrive amidst the ongoing HIV, sexually-transmitted infection and opioid epidemics. A record 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the United States today, and the epidemic continues to disproportionately impact young gay and bisexual men, people of color and individuals who inject drugs. Nationally, more than 35,000 new HIV infections are reported annually. The name Vivent is derived from the Latin word, “live” and verb, “prevent” and reflects the spirit and values of the organization. “Our new name is a celebration of our most sacred beliefs—that no one should be defined by the health challenges they face and everyone deserves the highest quality of care and the chance to live long, healthy lives,” said Michael J. Gifford, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vivent Health. “Our new, stronger brand and mission reflect our

relentless efforts to help people affected by HIV thrive.” The Vivent Health patient-centered model of care is helping more than 95 percent of their patients achieve an undetectable viral load. Being undetectable is the most important clinical outcome related to the treatment of HIV, as people with an undetectable viral load are not only managing their HIV as well as possible, they are also unable to transmit HIV to someone else. An important aspect of health care at Vivent Health is ensuring people at risk for HIV have access to PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), a lifesaving pill that when taken daily is over 90 percent effective in preventing HIV. Unfortunately, fewer than 8 percent of people at risk for HIV have access to or can afford the medicine. Continues Gifford, “As the need for PrEP increases and HIV continues to be a leading example of a health disparity, Vivent Health will be as committed as ever to expanding lifesaving programs to individuals with the greatest need and working toward our ultimate goal of a world without AIDS.” The announcement about the name change comes two weeks before Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, an international day dedicated to uniting people worldwide in response to HIV and showing support for people affected by the HIV epidemic.

New STEM center sparks students to engage in science
By Langston Hughes | Directed By Azeeza Islam
12/5 – 12/15 When an ordinary storage room is transformed into a sparkling science lab filled with modern learning technology, students get excited. At MPS Cass Street School, teachers report that students can’t wait for science class and are engaged in learning in new, meaningful ways. Cass now has two rooms dedicated to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM subjects) where students are exploring new topics and experimenting in new ways. A thirdfloor classroom is equipped with 24 computer stations and an assortment of Project Lead The Way (PLTW) modules. In a refreshed lower level classroom, students have access to 3D printers, drill presses, robotics gear, a bandsaw, a situation room, and more to design and collaborate on experiments. “The students are really excited to have access to the STEM center and to have the chance to experiment,” said Monique Bates, who has taught in MPS for 22 years and currently teaches Project Lead The Way for a variety of age levels. “I see them taking ownership of their projects. They love being able to carry out a project from beginning to end and to see the result of a process.” The installation of the computer room and STEM
center were made possible by a gift from Rockwell Automation. Rockwell’s African American Professionals Network began volunteering at Cass about five years ago. Over time, the volunteers began to sense the needs of the students and the school, and Bates worked for several years to propose the renovations. “It was a long process, but worth it,” Bates said. “The STEM fields are wide open, and we want our students to see that they can be front-seat drivers in selecting and pursuing good careers.” The STEM centers are used during the school day as well as in the after-school program, which is operated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. Project Lead The Way offerings include Design & Modeling, Energy & Environment, Automation & Robotics, Magic of Electrons, and Science of Technology. The Launch program was added this year to deliver PLTW to the younger grades. When asked about the new STEM centers, students showed great excitement and said, “Thank you, Rockwell!” Cass Street School is located at 1647 N. Cass Street in Milwaukee and offers education in grades K4 through 8. Visit the school website at http://www5.milwaukee. k12.wi.us/school/cass.
