Advisory: From The City Of Milwaukee Commissioner Of Health On November 26, 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the new COVID B.1.1.529 variant, named Omicron, a variant of concern because it has a large number of mutations and preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection and spread across the world, including to the United States. As of November 30, 2021, zero specimens processed within the Milwaukee Health Department Laboratory have been identified as Omicron. However, in anticipation of future identification of this variant in Milwaukee, and due to the burden of positive COVID-19 cases remaining in the extreme transmission category, the Milwaukee Health Department hereby provides notice that all individuals, regardless of vaccination status or past COVID-19 infection, should wear a mask at all times when indoors in a public setting.

Time to amend the amendment?

By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times Growing up in a family that was liberally sprinkled with members of professional law enforcement – including local police and sheriff ’s departments and the FBI, I developed some basic viewpoints about the law and guns. Two of those viewpoints were 1) always try to live within the guidelines of the law; and 2) there is no need for guns in a civilized modern society, because whenever guns are involved, violence, trouble and tragedy are just one misunderstanding away. The most recent event that supports these viewpoints is the outcome of the trial of accused murderer Kyle Rittenhouse.

police officer shooting and critically injuring Jacob Blake following a domestic dispute gone awry. Rittenhouse’s contribution to the melee was the killing of two people and the serious injury of another. His use of the deadly weapon was caught on video. The purpose of brandishing the weapon – namely assault – speaks for itself, as an action, NOT a reaction.

At age 17, Rittenhouse felt moved to get an assault rifle and drive across state lines, willfully lie and Personally, I’m profoundly interject himself into a street disturbed by the fact that disturbance that had erupted a parent would allow their in the aftermath of a Kenosha

Focus on Health

Brought to you by:

'Be One In A Million' For a number of months “All of Us Research Program” has led an awareness campaign through our local Black print media and the radio stations. Perhaps you’ve seen their colorful vans at various community events and buildings where they have been promoting this groundbreaking research program. In 2015, President Barack Obama introduced the “All of Us Research Program” concept as an initiative designed to leap into the new frontier of medicine and eliminate the one-size-fitsall approach to health care. He pledged to encourage genomic/DNA information about patients as a better way to determine the best clinical treatments based upon the unique factors of each person. A new medical approach where genetic profiles could determine health care decisions including prescriptions, treatment strategies and customized treatments for the individual. “Precision medicine” aims to improve health by targeting the exact disease and its

uniqueness for each individual. The “All of Us Research Program” guided under the National Institutes of Health, encourages each of us to ‘Be One In A Million’. The collective knowledge, especially among the African American and LatinX communities, is a critical component in the collective knowledge that will ensure better health. Data about racial tendencies and positive health outcomes traditionally show our Caucasian and Asian American counterparts are more proactive and generally seek medical attention earlier. As a result, our disparity figures continue to show we must be involved in our wellness early, as well as know more about cultural or historical differences so that our outcomes are better. The “All of Us Research Program” at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has made certain the Black and LatinX communities are informed. “When we know better, we do better, an adage appropriate, for this cam-

cations, and many beauty salons beginning December 6, 2021. Ms. Jackson-Cocroft has identified some of the most dynamic women of the clergy who speak to the importance of participating in the “ All of Us Research Program”, ’Be One In A Million’ for precision medicine. Follow Bishop Monica Parchia-Price and Pastor Teresa Thomas-Boyd, highlighted in the November-December issue of BLACK WOMEN 50+ MAGAZINE, as they share their reasons for using their pulpit and liturgical platforms to encourage you to join “ All Of Us Research Program” as an outstanding health, wellness, and spirituality resource for your health, and that of your future generations. These community-thought leaders understand that good health requires the mind, the body and the soul and they instinctively seek wellness as a gift to be treasured and protected. BLACK WOMEN 50+ MAGAZINE, will be arriving at your favorite Pick n Save Stores, many beauty

shops, as well as your Milwaukee Community Journal, King Drive location and WNOV 860’s Capitol Drive location, right after the Thanksgiving holidays. Pick up your FREE issue, read and learn more about the “All of Us Research Program” and how it will benefit you and all of us, for years to come. Thanks to the Program Director Karen Dotson at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the entire “All of Us Research Program” staff, the Black and LatinX communities are assured the opportunity to actualize the vision of President Barack Obama who first said good health is a right for every citizen. He worked to ensure that the barriers that often entrench disparity outcomes were eliminated in the “ All of Us Research Program” strategy of precision medicine for all of us. ALL ABOUT SCIENCE & RESEARCH WITH ALL OF US

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

Men’s Health Matters to All of Us (Part 1)

Many studies reveal that men typically avoid going to the doctor. One study put the number as high as 60-percent. They would rather do anything, even clean the bathroom, or mow the lawn than go to the doctor. When it comes to mental health, the situation is worse. Men are less likely than women to seek mental health help for depression, substance addiction or stressful life events, including anxiety and trauma. The University of Wisconsin-Madison All of Us Milwaukee team at the Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships has created a series of Men’s Health Nights, with support from Unity Gospel House of Prayer, Raising the Bar non-profit and the Community Action Aging Resource Network (CAARN). Bashir Easter, Ph.D., assistant director of UW All of Us Milwaukee talks to us about the series.

pact of stress on Black men, and we were just all on one accord that the men in this community needed to see this. Pastor Lock had the building and access to Black male congregants, and Raising the Bar catered the food and provided equipment to show the film. Milwaukee Times: What kind of response have you gotten from the men? Dr. Bashir Easter: At our first event, we had 35 men show up to talk about stress. They received blood pressure checks and only four knew what the blood pressure numbers meant. So, we talked about how to use the numbers for optimal health, and the men just wanted to share. The second meeting didn’t get as many men, but we had some key leaders and influencers in the community. The leaders watched Garrett Davis’ mental health short film which talked about the impact of stress on African American men, and we knew that these sessions needed to continue.

Dr. Bashir Easter: Men’s Health Night gives an opportunity for men to get together and talk about their health, and it came about organically in a place familiar to most men, the barbershop. I happened to see Pastor Marlon Lock from Unity Gospel House of Prayer at the barbershop, and I was talking about the need for men to know more about their health. He felt the same way. We brought it to Robert Jackson from Raising the Bar non-profit. We got the license for the film, Daddy’s Boys, produced by Garrett Davis that explores the im-

Dr. Bashir Easter: We have two virtual events coming up. First, we are calling all professionals to bring their expertise to help the men, catering to their mind, body and spirit. So, we’re looking for physicians, psychologists, therapists, pastors and any other professional interested. This session will be for planning and will take place on

Milwaukee Times: Dr. Easter, why is men’s health important to All of Us? Dr. Bashir Easter: As you know, All of Us is a national effort that aims to build the largest most diverse database of health information of its kind that researchers can use to study health and illness. We want to support researchers in efforts to understand how different genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors impact health and disease. With this information, researchers can look to improve the ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat health conditions.
