On November 27, 2021, the Pauline Redmond Coggs Foundation hosted the "47th Debutante Cotillion" virtually. Typically the foundation would host more than 500 guests at Milwaukee's Pfister Hotel. This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tradition carried on virtually with eight debutantes introduced to society collectively as "The IN Crowd: INtelligent, INspirational, INcomparable." Pictured are the eight young women (top from left): Amari Vinson, Arielle Callahan, Ashley Anyanwu, Blair Martin, Lauren Day, (bottom from left) Ni'Mia Moore, Shaterra Richerson and Zariah Luckett-Patterson .

On November 30, 2021, The City of Milwaukee hosted a dedication of the Milwaukee Fire Department Administration Building at 711 W. Wells Street, in honor of its architect Alonzo Robinson, Jr. (center). Alonzo was the first African American architect licensed by the state of Wisconsin and the city of Milwaukee's first Black registered municipal architect. His career was marked by many firsts and barrier-breaking accomplishments, including being the first person of color to pass the state registration exam, heading his own design firm and becoming the first African American to serve as the managing architect for Milwaukee County's Department of Public Works. He was also the first Black Adjunct Professor to teach Construction Management, Estimating and Architectural Design classes at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. At the dedication Alonzo was praised by Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, Mayor Tom Barrett, County Executive David Crowley, Common Council President Cavalier Johnson, 4th District Alderman Robert Bauman, Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters De'Wayne Smoots, his family including his son photojournalist Kim Robinson, as well as many other friends and well-wishers. On Sunday, November 28, 2021, the Wisconsin Funeral Directors and Morticians Association (WFD&MA) hosted "A Parade of Hearses Against Violence," at Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ, 3500 W. Mother Danlies Way. The event was to show solidarity among the African American funeral directors and take a stand against violence. As funeral directors and morticians they see firsthand the horrors and devastation violence in the community brings to families and other loved ones. The parade started on Fond du Lac Ave., and continued to Holy Redeemer where they made a joint public address. The WFD&MA is working Milwaukee Police Department, the Mayor's Office, the Lt. Governor's office and faith-based leaders across all denominations.

The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Year-in-review 2021 has been an extremely challenging and trying year. Let’s briefly look back over our year. A Look Back The COVID-19 virus infections reached staggering levels in countries around the globe, while waning in others; and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) informed Americans the Delta variant created a new threat. If you are not fully vaccinated, continue to do the 3 W’s: Wear a mask, Wash your hands and Watch your distance.

arts, medicine, academia, law, science, engineering, economics, music, arts, etc. While African Americans are deeply entrenched in the history of our country, often they don’t get the recognition they deserve. We saluted our trailblazers. Their service is so appreciated!! Next, Hurricane Ida roared her way north to New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania slamming these northeastern states with rains and flooding.

On June 24, 2021 at 1:25 a.m. EST, half of the Miami-area Champlain Towers South, once a 12-story condominium in Surfside, FL, collapsed killing 98 people. The collapse was a horrifying tragedy that devastated families and loved ones and nearly a dozen countries reported casualties in the Champlain Towers collapse.

Then, on September 11, America remembered the 20th anniversary lethal attack on American soil by 19 terrorists who hijacked and then turned commercial passenger airplanes into missiles. America remembered the 2,977 people who were killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and thousands more who were injured. often heart-wrenching difficulties, remember God is our refuge, a very present help in trouble. (See Psalm 46:1.) Draw on your faith during difficult times as your faith will sustain you and get you through trying times. During 2021, there were also seasons of joy. We will have trials in life, but as Christians we have peace and joy regardless of what our circumstances are. So, meditate on the joy of the Lord as it is your strength. (See John 16:33, Nehemiah 8:10.) As the year draws to a close, let’s take a momentary look at the most popular article that ran in this column in 2021. In February this column saluted Milwaukee African American Trailblazers. African Americans are involved in civil rights, politics, journalism, religion, land resources, public service, culinary

and for our country.

As in years past, this column will take a break for the rest of December. ALL ABOUT SCIENCE & RESEARCH WITH ALL OF US 16

Milwaukee Times Weekly Newspaper

Men’s Health Matters to All of Us (Part 2) The planning for the Men’s Health Night III: Real Talk is underway. A dozen professionals met virtually on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 for about two hours talking about the next plan of action. The result…a session that will provide resources for all men in attendance to help feed their minds, bodies, and souls. This is brought to you by the University of Wisconsin-Madison All of Us Milwaukee team at the Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships, along with support from Unity Gospel House of Prayer, Raising the Bar non-profit and the Community Action Aging Resource Network (CAARN). Bashir Easter, Ph.D., assistant director of UW All of Us Milwaukee joins us with an update. Milwaukee Times: Dr. Easter, how pleased were you with this week’s planning session? Dr. Bashir Easter: I was extremely pleased. Our planning session had some wonderful experts with all kinds of ideas. We talked about the origin of Men’s Health Night, how it formed because of a conversation at the barbershop; how after two sessions of men learning about their blood pressure numbers and

watching a movie about how stress impacts us all, we have a series. The men who have been attending want to learn more about their health and how they can maintain their health, mentally and physically.

100 men on December 17th. We want to educate the men about the All of Us program, enroll them and get them to the point of getting their genetic code. Then they can be a part of a focus group with some of our partners, and we can begin building the structure for what we are calling community scientists. What

Milwaukee Times: So, what can men expect? Dr. Bashir Easter: The series is now solidified. On Men’s Health Night III: Real Talk, our meeting will set the stage for the first quarter of the year. After a brief background and an icebreaker, we will be talking, specifically, about the mind, body, and spirit. Pastor Clem Richardson from Kingdom Empowered Ministries, who is also a mental health and clinical substance abuse counselor, will talk about the importance of being in a right mind. He will be followed by fitness trainer, Leonard Wilson, who will talk about how crucial it is to exercise and eat nutritious meals. Finally, Pastor Andrew Calhoun of Grace Fellowship Church of Milwaukee and Pastor Marlon Lock of Unity Gospel House of Prayer will end the session on a spiritual note. There will be incentives for the attendees. You must attend to find out about those.

we learn together could improve our community’s overall health, and that’s why this series is so important to All of Us. For more information or to make an appointment to enroll, call (414) 219-3810, Option 1 or visit nationally, https://www.joinallofus. org/.

Dr. Bashir Easter, Ph.D. Milwaukee Times: Tell us again when the next Men’s Night takes place. Dr. Bashir Easter: Men’s Health Night III takes place on Friday, December 17 at 6 p.m. If you would like to register, scan the respective flyer, or use this link: https:// tinyurl.com/MensHealthNight3. Milwaukee Times: Dr. Easter, why is men’s health important to All of Us? Dr. Bashir Easter: We may not always appreciate it, but science and research are crucial to our lives, and we need to understand it and take part in it. We have the opportunity to use our Men’s Health Nights to build a cohort of men to be involved in health literacy and science and research in the All of Us program. We are pushing to have
