Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. hosts Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway

On Tuesday, November 22, 2016 Milwaukee Health Services, Inc., hosted their Sixth Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway and Health Screenings event at MLK Heritage Health Center, 2555 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The event was co-sponsored by Trilogy Homegrown Health Care, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, the American Cancer Society, Gruber Law Offices, LLC; and the 34 Ways to Assist Foundation. All contributed to provide access to free health care services for the day. The Milwaukee Bucks players were also on hand to help distribute a nutritious holiday dinner. According to Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. corporate communications specialist Pamela Clark (center), “Community service has always been an important part of the mission of MHSI. The Thanksgiving dinner giveaway provides an opportunity for our employees and collaborating partners to give back to the community we serve.”
North Division Alumni Association hosts Holiday Food Drive The North Division Alumni Association hosted a food drive to support the senior student leaders at North Division High School on Saturday, November 19, 2016. Alumni Association members collected canned goods, donations and other non-perishable food items. The food drive event was hosted at Garfields 502 Club located at 502 West Garfield Ave. from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Attendees were encouraged to drop off food items items and stay to network and socialize. The North Division students will host another food drive at the school after Thanksgiving. The food collected will be distributed in time for Christmas.

On Monday, November 21, 2016, Super Bowl champion and "Lambeau Leap" inventor LeRoy Butler visited Sojourner Family Peace Center, 619 W. Walnut Street. Butler met families and talk about dreams, determination and the social problems that result from bullying. Butler shared his personal experiences of dealing with violence and bullying and advocated for creating a peaceful environment that encourages positivity for the next generation. In an effort to create safe and healthy families in our community, Sojourner has partnered with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and LeRoy Butler to share how youth can have a positive impact on our community by building life-long healthy habits and to spark the change necessary to help youth begin those habits. Milwaukee’s Spectrum Lecture series to feature Facebook creative strategist Neisha Tweed in December
Local organization Greater Together brings nationally recognized designer to Radio Milwaukee for open-to-the-public lecture on December 8th and 9th. Greater Together, an organization dedicated to promoting racial and economic equality in Milwaukee’s creative industries, has partnered with America’s leading design organization AIGA and 88Nine Radio Milwaukee to bring Neisha Tweed, a creative strategist at Facebook, to Milwaukee, Dec. 8 and 9 as the keynote speaker at the Greater Together Spectrum Lecture Series. Greater Together curates an annual series of lectures that brings together the world of design and social innovation with a particular focus on increasing inclusion into Greater Milwaukee’s creative industries so that all can participate, prosper and reach their full potential. The Spectrum Series is an open-to-the-public program established by Greater Together that focuses on bringing innovative, social activists from creative industries across the country to Milwaukee to discuss and demonstrate the power of design to change our world. Featuring prominent and nationally recognized creatives of color, Spectrum is a collision of design, business and social innovation. Spectrum speakers engage the Milwaukee community in hands-on
Neisha Tweed workshops, panels and lectures tailored for young designers, those interested in entering the industry, and the business community. Past speakers of this initiative include Maurice Woods, nationally acclaimed creative director at Yahoo; and Kervin Brisseaux, lead designer at Vault 49. The next lecture in the series is a speaking engagement featuring Neisha Tweed on Dec. 8 at the 88Nine Radio Milwaukee headquarters from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event is open to those in the Milwaukee community who are looking for inspiration and an understanding of what it means to be creative, as well as designers of all types, students of all levels and experienced professionals. There is a suggested donation of $10 for this event. This event will be followed by a breakfast panel discus-
sion on the morning of Dec. 9 at Coffee Makes You Black from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. This event is open to the creative community, social innovators and policy makers in the community. The cost for the panel discussion will be $15 for the public and includes breakfast. This will be followed by an afternoon workshop for students at Marshall High School, which will include a lecture and hands-on projects. Record-breaking phone bank provides food for families throughout southeastern Wisconsin

The ‘Food For Families Phone Bank’ raised more than $160,000 to help fund local food pantries in Southeastern Wisconsin, through live coverage with station anchors, reporters and area celebrities, both on-air and on-line. WISN 12 and Hunger Task Force teamed up on Tuesday Nov. 22, 2016 and Wednesday Nov. 23, 2016, surpassing previous fundraising records and putting essential food items on the tables of 1,280 families. “Generosity and compassion is ingrained into the community, and our dedicated viewers continuously show how committed they are to helping those who need it most,” said Jan Wade, president and general manager, WISN 12. “We’re lucky to be part of such an important community project
that affects so many lives in southeastern Wisconsin.” In 2014, the ‘Food For Families Phone Bank’ raised roughly $85,000. With the gains experienced through the charitable campaign in 2016, donations have nearly doubled over the course of just two years. Last year, these fundraising efforts brought in about $103,000. "The results of this campaign were amazing! Phones were ringing off the hook and donations were pouring in,” said Sherrie Tussler, executive director of Hunger Task Force. “We’re so thankful to our donors who have made Food For Families a holiday tradition. So many neighbors were helped this Thanksgiving, and on their behalf, we thank all contributors and WISN 12."

She is currently a Master’s student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. Camille has participated in
research regarding community mental wellness and the integration of Black psychology and critical theory within the therapeutic context. She has presented on the impact of community violence on the wellbeing of African American youth along with the effects of historically violent images and the resulting impacts of emotion regulation strategies utilized by African Americans. Her life motto is “speak truth to power with love” and she demonstrates this in her passion and commitment to advocacy efforts to de-stigmatize mental health and accessibility to services in underserved marginalized populations. Upon graduation in the Spring 2017, Camille has hopes of continuing her education through doctoral work to further investigate and incorporate culturally sensitive interventions for minority communities and clients. The Christian Business and Professional Alliance is group of individuals committed to improving the quality of life for young citizens of our community. Riverside University High School wins Fresh Coast Classic Mega Drumline Competition A second-place finish last year at the Fresh Coast Classic Mega Drumline Competition may have left the Riverside University High School Drumline hungry – hungry enough to return this year to win the championship. The 2016 event, held November 26, 2016, at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee Klotsche Center, found the hungry Tigers Drumline victorious over a total of seven drumline teams, including last year’s winner. The Fresh Coast Classic, which features 22 area high school basketball teams in two days of competition, also hosts the Mega drumline competition. The event, now in its tenth year, included a college and career fair earlier in November that drew more than 3,000 attendees. Riverside’s drumline director, Michael Van Pelt, said,
“The drumline enjoys competing and the competition level was really high this year. Our drumline students have been practicing since October and have put in a lot of effort to get to this point.” Drumlines are one of many efforts across the MPS district that have expanded arts programs in all forms, including a variety of choirs, marching bands, jazz bands, orchestra, and specialty music groups, plus a range of visual arts. Second place in the event went to last year’s champion, West Bend East and West High School. Third place was also awarded to an MPS school, Rufus King International High School. Ho, Ho, No! Holiday safety tips (part 1 of 2) The holidays are upon us and with this time of year come stress. And more than from,what gift to get Uncle Howard? The holidays can also bring physical stress in the form of injury. Here are a number of safety tips to keep you or your loved ones out of the hospital, so that everyone can have a Happy Holiday. Decorating safety • Never use lighted candles near trees, boughs, curtains/ drapes, or with any potentially flammable item. • Wear gloves while decorating with spun glass “angel hair.” It can irritate your eyes and skin. A common substitute is non-flammable cotton. • When spraying artificial snow on windows or other surfaces, be sure to follow directions carefully. These sprays can irritate your lungs if you inhale them. • Small children may think that holiday plants look good enough to eat, but many plants may be poisonous or can cause severe stomach problems. Plants to watch out for include: mistletoe, holly berries, Jerusalem cherry and amaryllis. Keep all of these plants out of children's reach. • When displaying a tree,
cut off about two inches off the trunk and put the tree in a sturdy, water-holding stand. Keep the stand filled with water so the tree does not dry out quickly. • Stand your tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Make sure the tree does not block foot traffic or doorways. • Avoid placing breakable tree ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower branches where small children or pets can reach them. • If you use an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with builtin electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label. • Only use indoor lights indoors (and outdoor lights only outdoors). Look for the UL label. Check lights for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Replace or repair any damaged light sets. • Use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Extension cords should be placed against the wall to avoid tripping haz-
ards, but do not run cords under rugs, around furniture legs or across doorways. • Turn off all lights on trees and decorations when you go to bed or leave the house. Unplug extension cords when not in use. • If using a natural tree, make sure it is well watered to avoid dry branches from catching fire from the heat of light bulbs. • When displaying outdoor lights, fasten them firmly to a secure support with insulated staples or hooks to avoid wind damage. Never nail, tack or stress wiring when hanging lights and keep plugs off the ground away from puddles and snow. Ladder safety • When putting up holiday decorations, always use the proper step stool or ladder to reach high places. Don’t stand on chairs, desks or other furniture. • If you have to use a step ladder near a doorway, lock
or barricade the door and post signs so no one will open it and knock you off the ladder. • A straight or extension ladder should be placed one foot away from the surface it rests against for every four feet of ladder
height. • When you climb, always face the ladder and grip the rungs to climb – not the side rails. Always keep three points of contact on the ladder whether two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. • When climbing, keep your hips between the side rails and do not lean too far or overreach. Reposition the ladder closer to the work instead. • Use ladders with slip-resistant feet and wear clean, dry and slip-resistant shoes when climbing a ladder. • When using ladders outdoors, get down immediately if high winds, rain, snow or other inclement weather begins. Winds can blow you off the ladder and rain or snow can make both the rungs and the ground slippery. Hosting and food safety • When preparing a holiday meal for friends and family
be sure to wash hands, utensils, sink, and anything else that has come in contact with raw poultry. Keep in mind that a stuffed bird takes longer to cook. • Never defrost food at room temperature. Thaw it in the refrigerator, in cold water or in the microwave. • While doing holiday cooking, keep your knives sharp. Most knife injuries occur due to dull blades. • Use a clean food thermometer to cook foods to a safe internal temperature before serving. • Avoid cleaning kitchen surfaces with wet dishcloths or sponges. They easily harbor bacteria and promote bacteria growth. Use clean paper towels instead. • When reheating leftovers, bring the temperature up to at least 165°F to eliminate any bacterial growth. • Refrigerate or freeze leftovers in covered shallow containers (less than two inches deep) within two hours after cooking. Date the leftovers for future use. • Being a smart party host or guest should include being sensible about alcoholic drinks. More than half of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-related. The three types of pain that could mean Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) As many as 60 million people – that’s 20 percent of Americans – deal with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a chronic condition that affects the lower gastrointestinal tract. It also causes the colon to be irritable and spastic, which causes the abdominal discomfort associated with changes in the consistency and/or frequency of bowel movements. The causes of IBS are not fully known, but are believed to be a result of a combination of factors, including bacterial imbalance, food allergies and parasites. IBS has three subcategories: • pain associated with diarrhea; • pain associated with constipation; • pain and diarrhea alter-
nating with constipation How does IBS affect people? People who suffer from IBS are plagued by uncomfortable and disabling symptoms like abdominal pain (the most commonly reported), bloating, and both diarrhea and constipation. These symptoms cause them to be affected in their daily life and they also miss approximately twice as many work days per year as non-sufferers. They also report more fatigue, lack of energy and also decreased physical functioning, and overall general health. Treating IBS Although there are plenty of treatments for IBS, many do not address the underlying causes in the digestive system. The lining of the colon, or
the gut, is affected in IBS and when it breaks down it can cause a “leaky gut” syndrome that eventually exposes the immune system to bacteria. This lining can break down from toxic diets, too much sugar, not enough fiber and also stress. When this happens, the immune system responds and causes changes in the body
such as increased allergies, sensitivities, mood disorders and even depression. In order to balance the gut’s ecosystem, it must be controlled and the overgrowth of bacteria managed to be in balance. This balance will help to resolve bloating and overall symptoms of IBS by clearing out the overgrowth of bacteria. The best way to attack these symptoms is to repopulate your digestive tract with good bacteria. Probiotics are a great way to accomplish this, as they help to further normalize gut function. Probiotics are live microorganisms which can be therapeutic for gastrointestinal diseases such as IBS. They help the bowel by suppressing the growth of bad

bacteria, improves the leaky gut, and helps to alter the immune system. The use of probiotics may also improve bowel motility. You can also repopulate your digestive tract with good bacteria by increasing fiber and decreasing sugar in your diet. Soluble fiber in vegetables and fruit add healthy bulk to the diet. Another beneficial option is taking digestive enzymes with meals to help break down food faster as the gut heals. Other nutrients that can help heal the lining of the gut include fish oil and the fatty acid Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) commonly found in evening primrose oil, zinc, vitamin A and glutamine. Make sure to also drink plenty of water, exercise regularly and decrease your alcohol intake to promote regularity and minimize your IBS symptoms. If you suspect that you may have IBS, consult with your doctor so they can do a careful physical examination with a complete history and an initial evaluation with lab work. For some patients this may mean a colonoscopy if there is a family history of colon cancer. Visiting your doctor as well as eliminating certain foods to treat the underlying causes of IBS can dramatically improve your health and help you to overcome your digestive problems.

Check your owner’s manual for the recommended interval for a tune-up. • Be prepared for emergency situations on the road by having a winter “survival kit” in the vehicle including items such as, a working flashlight, extra batteries, reflective triangles, compass, first aid kit, exterior windshield cleaner, ice scraper, snow brush, wooden stick matches in a waterproof container, and non-perishable, high energy foods like unsalted canned nuts, dried fruits, and hard candy.
