Black Nativity by Langston Hughes celebrates 5th Year at Marcus Center On Thursday, December 5, 2019, Black Arts MKE presented a community night preview performance of "Black Nativity" by Langston Hughes at the Marcus Center's Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall. This holiday season marks the 5th year that the play has preformed in Milwaukee and has become an annual holiday tradition for families here in the community. This year the play is directed by Antoine Reynolds and features an all local cast and crew. "Black Nativity by Langston Hughes" is a testament to the power of gospel music, telling the classic story of the Nativity through a combination of African American scripture, poetry, dance and song. "Black Nativity by Langston Hughes" runs from December 5 through December 15, 2019.

Event Photo
On Sunday, December 8, 2019, Alverno College celebrated the 25th anniversary of their "Bestowing of the Kente," at the Alverno College Bucyrus Conference Center. The Bestowing of the Kente is a rite of passage recognizing African American students who are graduating seniors, earning a master's degree, or completing a certification program. Each honoree is presented with a Kente cloth–a hand-woven ceremonial stole featuring bright colors that honor West African heritage. The event is a way for African American students and their families to celebrate their heritage as well as their achievement. This year 19 women were honored at the Bestowing of the Kente ceremony. Pictured at the event are Melissa Allen, Latisha Allen, Marquila Bates, Alexis B. Carter, Calé Clark, Teahna Dunn, Franzetta Lee, Kami London, Leah Manns, Brianna McDonald, Sahra Mohamud, Kayla Moore, Krystal Petrie, Fatuma Shale, Annmarie Sims, Erika Stanley, MaKaila Strong, Lavenya White, and Monique Williams.

South Africa wins Miss Universe with talk of leadership for women
And the winner is … South Africa! Out of 90 contestants, Zozibini Tunzi took the crown for Miss Universe 2019, with Madison Anderson, Miss Puerto Rico, coming in as first runner-up. In 2018, South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters crowned Catriona Gray of the Philippines and, on Sunday, December 8, 2019, Gray and her country returned the compliment, anointing South Africa’s Tunzi after a spirited competition among 20 semifinalists. Anderson, Miss Puerto Rico, urged girls and young
women to “be yourself ” in her answer to the final question posed by host Steve Harvey. Tunzi blew everyone away with her quote on the importance of teaching young women leadership, and to “take up space,” which caused the crowd to go wild.
Zozibini Tunzi is crowned the new Miss Universe.
ety has labeled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings in the world, and that we should be given every opportunity. And that is what we should be teaching these young girls – to take up space. Nothing as important as taking up space in society.” The tail end of her answer was drowned out by raucous cheers.
“I think one of the most important things we should be teaching young girls today is leadership,” she said. “It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time – not because we don’t want to but because of what soci-
Harvey played it fairly straight during this, his fifth time hosting and the 68th Miss Universe contest, this one held at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
Milwaukee Brewers unveil new logo and uniforms for 50th Anniversary season On Monday, November 18, 2019, the Milwaukee Brewers unveiled their logo for the 2020 season, during a media event held at Miller Park. The 2020 season also marks the 50th anniversary of the Brewers team. The new logo restores a logo that is deeply rooted in the Milwaukee community and the team's storied past: a modernized version of the iconic ball-in-glove which was first introduced in 1978. Along with the new logo, new team uniforms were revealed as well, modeled by Brewers (from left) Ryan Braun, Brandon Woodruff, Brent Suter, and Keston Hiura. The updated logo and new uniform designs recognizes the history of the franchise and the vision for its future. The new brand identity helps depict the story of the Brewers and their fans and characteristics of the city and state they call home.

Marvin Pratt School “significantly exceeds expectations” on Wisconsin State Report Card When Principal Janice Carter took the helm at Marvin Pratt Elementary School, the school was ranked in the bottom category on the Wisconsin State Report Card. Eight years later, the school has reached the top tier of the report and is rated as Significantly Exceeds Expectations. Milwaukee Public Schools congratulates the students, staff, and families at Pratt! Carter has worked tirelessly to turn the school around and make it a place where students can achieve. When she accepted the role of principal, she immediately decided to make changes to the building and improve the climate in the school. Her husband, who attended Pratt as a child, visited with her and noted that the school appeared exactly the same as it did when he attended. Carter took that as motivation to upgrade the school and make it comfortable and welcoming. Carter found motivation from many sources. “I have never attended a failing school,” she said. “I wouldn’t feel right without pushing it hard. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.” She named several mentors who inspired her and provided a vision to build the school into a success story. Another goal was to change the mindset of the staff, students, and families, and to build accountability for test scores. She also implemented tactics for teachers to look at test results and use the information

Crowds were cheering at Riverside University High School on Saturday, December 7, 2019, when MPS drumlines faced off in the annual Battle of the Drumlines. Students gave their best effort with precision drumming, footwork, showmanship, and stick tricks to present a thrilling competition. Congratulations to the Rufus King Varsity Drumline, who took home the first place trophy! “Battle of the Drumlines is always an exciting event,” said Tony Soyak, MPS Music Curriculum Specialist. “Our students gain so much through music including poise, teamwork, precision, and a strong work ethic. to increase knowledge and respond to student needs. Now, students and teachers understand how to leverage test scores into learning experiences and higher achievement. Carter is also a proponent of school uniforms, believing that they reduce distractions. The majority of Pratt students wear uniforms daily. She tells students that when they get dressed every morning, they should think of themselves as coming to work. This type of thinking puts them in the frame of mind for learning. Celebrations are also a regular part of school culture. Carter sees how students respond when they are rewarded for good attendance, being on time, and making improvements. Rewards range from pencils and stickers to recognition at school assemblies to special lunch events. Marvin Pratt Elementary School is located at 5131 N. Green Bay Ave. For more information, visit mpsmke. com or call (414) 247-7300

Are you “blind” to the fact that your vision may not be as good as you think? By Cheryl L. Dejewski “Often when I tell a patient that they have a serious eye condition like glaucoma or macular degeneration, they’ll respond, ‘But, I can see fine’ or ‘I haven’t noticed anything wrong with my eyes,’” reports Mark Freedman, MD, senior partner at Eye Care Specialists, an ophthalmology practice that has overseen the care of 185,000+ area residents. He adds, “Unfortunately, whether the person is in denial, didn’t notice, or really has no symptoms, the outcome is still the same. Early diagnosis and treatment are the only ways to prevent unnecessary vision loss.” Brett Rhode, MD, Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center and a partner at Eye Care Specialists, explains, “What people don’t realize is that problems in one eye can be masked by the ability of the other eye to compensate. Or, changes occur so gradually that they go unnoticed. For example, with glaucoma, loss of side vision slowly occurs until it creates a ‘tunnel’ effect. And, with cataracts, many people don’t realize how much they’ve been missing until the cloudy lens is surgically removed and replaced with an im-
plant. Then they exclaim how much brighter and more colorful everything is or how much easier it is to recognize faces or see the TV.” Loss of vision also leads to serious issues, like an increased risk of falling, hip fractures, car accidents, nursing home placement, and depression. “Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are key to maintaining independence and quality of life. For example, when a patient’s vision has diminished with age and a new eyeglass prescription doesn’t do the trick, we often find that cataracts are the cause of the problem and, in most cases, surgical removal and replacement with a lens implant is a relatively easy and painless solution,” notes
Daniel Ferguson, MD, who has performed thousands of cataract surgeries. “Poor vision is not a fact of life and aging. It’s important to discover what’s behind the changes—whether it’s simply the need for a new glasses prescription or something more serious like the need for injection treatment to hold off diabetes-related damage. That’s why we can’t stress enough the importance of scheduling comprehensive dilated eye examinations at least every two years,” states Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, an ophthalmologist with credentials from Harvard and Johns Hopkins. Continuing education lecturer Michael Raciti, MD, explains, “When you do sched-

ule an appointment, make sure that it is for a comprehensive exam, which means that the doctor will dilate your pupils and check your ability as far as accommodation (switching focus between near and far), pupil reflexes (adjusting from light to dark), muscle motility (looking to the sides and keeping the eyes in alignment), visual acuity (seeing objects clearly near and far), and visual field (seeing objects off to the side). They should also check the external surface (for infections and inflammations), lens (for cataracts), retina (for macular degeneration, diabetes, etc.), and internal pressure and optic nerve (for glaucoma).” “Sight-saving diagnosis and treatment options are of no use if you are not aware, or are in denial, that you even have a problem. Start by asking yourself, ‘When was my last eye exam?’ Then, take action to enhance and protect your ability to see life to the fullest—now and in the future—by scheduling an exam today,” says medical optometrist David Scheidt, OD.
