On Friday, December 10, 2021, Milwaukee Public Schools' (MPS) George Washington Carver Academy, 1900 N. 1st St.,hosted a formal ceremony to dedicate their library to Joyce A. Hall. The longtime teacher and volunteer is believed to have served at least 2,000 MPS students. Hall, 90, began working for MPS in 1955 and retired after 36 years. She served as a full-time reading teacher for more than 30 years and almost 20 years as a volunteer reading tutor. Hall remained dedicated to helping students after retirement, with her last physical appearance at George Washington Carver Academy in January 2020. Representatives from MPS, the Greater Milwaukee Urban League, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers' office, City of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's office, St. Benedict the Moor Parish, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Hall family were present to speak about the dedication and Hall's service.

Bestowing of the Kente ceremony celebrates Black student graduates Alverno College’s annual Bestowing of the Kente is one of the oldest ceremonies of its kind in Wisconsin. The rite of passage recognizes Black students who are graduating seniors, earning a master’s degree, or completing a certification program. Each honoree is presented with a Kente cloth – a hand-woven ceremonial stole featuring bright colors that honor West African heritage. During the ceremony, the students honor and thank the loved ones who have supported them on their educational journeys. The ceremony is a way for Black students and their families to celebrate their heritage as well as their achievement, and included African drumming during the processional. For more than 25 years, Alverno has been holding a Bestowing of the Kente ceremony, and more than 825 people have taken part in the ceremony since its inception. Those honored at the event this year are (front row, from left) Meliciya Harris, Jennifer Cooper, Raquel Hardrick, Markeita Jones, Jill Wallace, Trina Gandy, (back row, from leftt) Dr. Ava Coleman, Dr. Clarissa Lawrene, Antoine Carter, Donna Lewis, Kara Manning, Ronneisha Thomas, and Latasha Wilson. National Black Business Chamber champion Harry C. Alford dies Leader and President/ CEO and Co-Founder of the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC), Harry C. Alford, transitioned Monday, December 6, 2021, in Washington, DC. He was preceded in death five months ago by his wife, Kay DeBow, Vice President and Co-Founder of the National Black Chamber. In 1993, Harry C. Alfred moved the newly established National Black Chamber of Commerce from Indianapolis, Indiana to Washington, DC. The first Board Chairman was the former Assistant Secretary of Labor, Dr. Arthur Fletcher, the “Father of Affirmative Action.” Most of the existing Black Chambers derived from Harry’s initiatives and influence over the years. Today, the National Black Chamber is the largest Black business organization in the world, consisting of regional organizations of Black Chambers in the United States, eight (8) countries in Africa, eleven (11) membership Chambers in the Caribbean and five-member Black Chambers in Central and South America. Black Chambers were also established in London and Paris under Harry’s leadership. In addition to coordinating this global operation, Alford spoke before Congress on behalf of Black business, often several times a month. For many years, he served on the Board of Directors of the most influential Chamber in America, the United States Chamber of Commerce, in Washington, DC. “When President George Bush asked Alford to assist him with a strategy to identify any Black owned businesses remaining in the Hurricane Katrina impact zone

NBCC Board and the Board of Directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “I knew Harry and Kay before they left Indianapolis to establish the national chamber in Washington DC. I had a great relationship with him in Indiana when he served in the cabinet of former Governor Evan Bayh. I went into a meeting with him expecting resistance and I was met with agreement and a solution that led the way for Indiana Black newspapers to do business with the state,” said Dorothy R. Leavell, publisher of the Chicago and Gary Crusader newspapers. “When he started the National Black Chamber, our relationship expanded to include me as a board member of NBCC and when I was

chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation he served with distinction on our board. He was always eager to help The Black Press ‘as a business’,” Leavell said. Members of the NBCC Board of Directors including Fred Jordan, NBCC’s outstanding member of San Francisco and Oakland, CA, representing the west coast, said that the future of NBCC is bright and presently Charles H. DeBow, III is Executive Director and had served previously as Vice

President of Global Development and Programs. Current NBCC Board Chairman and President of the Illinois State Black Chamber of Commerce, Larry Ivory, stated, “Harry Alford was the Godfather of Black Chambers in the United States and from his Washington, DC headquarters, gave Black business a seat at the table for over 28 years. Harry brought a fresh perspective and renewed vision that nothing was impossible and held the White House accountable for making available unfettered access to the Corps of Engineers, HUD, the Department of Commerce, and DOT for the nation’s greatest rebuild. “Today the lessons learned and visioning processes that Harry and Kay brought to fruition are responsible for tens of billions of dollars in small business inclusion programming which are now the basis for every disaster relief program. They not only made history in New Orleans but designed the base principals for recovery programs now implemented across the globe,” Baker said. As word spread of Harry’s death condolences and personal memories of Harry’s business acumen began to pour in. John Harmon, who is the president of one of the most successful Black Chambers in New Jersey, said that it was the guidance of Harry and his beloved wife Kay, that guided him through many business initiatives. Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Is this integration? I am a fan of any type of movie that makes you think. Science fiction or movies based on comic books are some of my favorite movie plots. I have seen everything from the X-Men, to the flop that was based on the Green Lantern. In 2021 I had to miss one of the best comic based movies to come out. There is a reason for this. I have grown weary of looking at black women draped all over white men. In the 60’s there was a push for integration. Is this portrayal of black women the form of integration those marchers wanted? I finally headed to see Venom: Let There Be Carnage. A voice said, “Frank check the actor list,” which I did. Lo and behold, old dried up Woody Harrelson has a love

to manifest in the future.

Naomi Harris interest and of course it is a black woman. To be fair, Naomi Harris is from Great Britain and they didn’t have slaves or racism in the UK. Yeah right. Needless to say I had to take a hard pass on Venom: Let There Be Carnage. I know what you are saying, “What is wrong with this racial advancement in movies?”

Answer, “Nothing.” Nothing is wrong with portraying women who have been raped, mentally transformed into pleasure toys, exploited, killed, being shown as in love with the race of men who committed the acts. I guess this is why Harriet Tubman left the plantation in order for this form of integration

Many are thinking, “Franks you are jumping to extreme conclusions.” Am I? Do you see Jewish women portrayed as being in love with Nazis? No. Seriously people, think about it. How would a movie be received with the previously mentioned plot scheme? I have not seen a movie made where a Jewish woman is in love with an ex-Nazi SS officer. How do I come with this comparison? Easy. The Nazis had a ten to twelve year run. The whites in the USA alone have more than 400 years of exploiting, killing and raping black people of both sexes. If a Jewish women would not be portrayed draped all over a Nazi, why should an African American woman be in the same scene with a white man,

much less in love? How does this race mixing help black people? Is this why Critical Race Theory is such a debated topic in schools? Do you think the Jewish people would deny their children the information about what happened in Nazi Germany? Do you think Jewish people would care if it painted the Nazis as evil or made their descendants feel bad? You know the answer. “What about black men with white women?” I feel the same way about this side of the swirl. Poor deluded African American males who think they are achieving the American Dream by intermingling with white women are pathetic. The only thing the African American male can say is, “Well, at least my child would be considered free.” This is true because a child with a white mother was considered, “free.” I doubt there was a lot of these type of children around in the 1700's and 1800’s. A child by a white man and black woman though was chattel. I wonder why? Is it because the white man was spreading his seed nightly in the slave quarters? Hmm. In defense of the female slaves, they were slaves. What is an educated free person like Kamala Harris’ rationale? Looks and machismo? Modern integration in the good ole USA 2021 style. You get to look at African American women hopelessly in love with basic to below average white men in films and on TV. Is this what Dr. King died for? Feliz Navidad! Men’s Health Night III: Real Talk is almost here. Additionally, other area churches and pastors are getting their congregants involved, and other non-profit organizations are now playing a role. Bashir Easter, Ph.D., assistant director of UW All of Us Milwaukee joins us with an update, along with some of the gentlemen who will be presenting. Milwaukee Times: Dr. Easter, what will men see on Friday? Dr. Bashir Easter: After meeting with the men and then about a dozen professionals twice last week, we decided to plan the next three months. In January, we will focus specifically on the mind. In February, we will move to the body and

Dr. Bashir Easter, Ph.D. follow-up with the soul in March. Thus, Friday will have 20-minute presentations of each to get the men ready for this journey. Pastor Clem Richardson of Kingdom Empowered Ministries, who is also a mental health and clinical substance abuse counselor, and Dr. R. Kweku Akyirefi Blaquesmith, PhD, LP, will begin with opening the men's minds. Dr. Kweku Blaquesmith: Men can expect to come into a space where the results are growth and healing in a holistic manner. It will be a masculine place where transparency and vulnerability are allowed. Dr. Bashir Easter: Next up with the body will be fitness trainer Leonard Wilson, Robert Jackson with Raising the Bar and new to the effort but just as committed, Andre Lee Ellis who founded We Got This Community Garden but now director of community development of the Ultimate Farm Collaborative. He eats, sleeps, and sometimes wears his work, as you can see from his picture.

Dr. R. Kweku Akyirefi Blaquesmith, Ph.D. Mr. Andrew Lee Ellis: When it comes to food, what you take in determines what and how it comes out. Eat to live, not to get full.

Dr. Andrew Calhoun, Ed.D.
